I'm going to a different school

Answer
Well do you like it? You shouldn't care all about What other people think especially at your age. You can't let people tell you who to be what to do (except for teachers, parents, other adults lol) but kids your age. And now you might think wait you just said you shouldn't care about other people think but if you want my honest opinion I'm not a fan. I think it would be better to get a bag from target with a simple print. And it's only because I kinda grew out of justice 2 years ago... But it's totally up to you that was just my honest opinion. I would not lie and say OMGEE IT'S THE CAUTEST BAG I'VE EVER SEEN. because in seventh grade I had a jansport backpack that was black and pink plaid. No one had justice bags... Good luck with seventh grade it's really important for high school especially if you want to go to private hs cuz they look at your seventh grade year a lot. Justbe the best you can be.

What type of items are your kids required to purchase for school?

My children are expected to bring 1-3 boxes of Kleenex. Then depending on the kid several of following items: dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, clorox wipes, headphones and/or liquid hand soap. I know that school budgets are tight but so is my budget at home. These items add up quickly - we have four children.

In addition to these janitoral items that we are expected to supply, the two middle school age children are required to have a seperate, new pair of shoes for gym class. Yes, I mean in addition to the new shoes that they bought with their back to school apparel.

All of this expense seems excessive to me. Is this typical of all school districts or do I have reason to be upset by this?
It is public school. I think if the janitoral list was a request instead a demand, I would be okay with sending some supplies. I just think it is crazy that I have sent almost $40 in janitoral supplies to school in the last two days and my kindergartener hasn't even gone yet! Of course that is in addition to the shoe thing. We did by inexpensive shoes but even $20 or $30 multiplied times for four is a lot. I'm just really aggravated with the whole thing.

Answer
I wish I lived in some of the places in the other answers! For Pre K last yr my son had to have (among other things) 2 pkgs safety pins (he used about 7 the whole year) EXPO markers (yes, big emphasis on expo) 2 bxs of baby wipes, 1 box gallon bags, (girls had to bring 1 box quart bags) 6 glue sticks, and 1 bttl shaving cream. (girls brought zip lock bags)

This yr for Kindergarten--(again, among other crap) 1 box 8 jumbo crayons, 1 box 16 regular crayons, 2 md size elmers glue, 10 lg glue sticks (are they sticking each other to the wall?) watercolors, 1 box quart zipper bags, 1 box gallon zipper bags, 2 boxes of 10 ct CLASSIC CRAYOLA (must, must, must) markers, 2 pkgs baby wipes, 1 bttl hand sanitizer (which Micah can only use sparingly, bc he has excema, and the alcohol drys his skin dreadfully) 1 pkg EXPO ONLY THIN TIP markers, and a backpack, plus we had to BUY a 5.00 book bag at the school. (fits one book, for their library days...wtf?) And of course some damn paper towels. Last yr he only needed 1 box of Kleenex, this year he needs 3. Most kids in Kindergarten just wipe their nose on their sleeves.

I would understand if SOME of these supplies were needed for the kids in the state programs such as Headstart, (Pre K for lower income families) but hell, they're not required to buy ANYTHING. And there's no such program after PreK. So what the fu*k are all these supplies being used for? OK, OK, maybe some of these outrageous demands are for the kids in his class that can't afford ALL their supplies--but there are lots of school drives around our area where they give out FREE supplies. And with 20 kids in a class, even if only half bring all the things on the list, we're still looking at 100 damn glue sticks. Give me a break.

Some friends in different states said that Micah's list sounded about like their kids' lists. So I guess it's normal in a lot of places. (I live in TX, btw) But I still think it's over the top and ridiculous. Plus, who knows how much money I'm going to be sending to school for the various events (field trips) and book fairs and parties this year?

I think that they should let you have back the supplies you bought that your child didn't use at the end of the year.

How do normal girls get ready in the morning?

Amy

I know it's horrible, but I never wash my face in the morning or do anything to my hair. I'm kind of a "grunge" girl, and I guess I'm just wondering what normal girls do to get ready in the morning.

Answer
To be honest, there isn't really a 'normal', practically everyone I know is different. I'll tell you what my morning timetable is though (this is a school morning btw)

6:00 - Wake up and go straight in shower
6:10 - get out of shower and spend a few minutes getting dry
6:15 - put dressing gown on and dry my hair with hairdryer
6:25 - either straighten/curl my hair
7:00 - get dressed
7:05 - go downstairs, maybe have breakfast
7:20 - make sure bag is packed
7:22 - quickly do make up (can never be bothered to spend ages)
7:25 - leave to catch bus

Overall it takes me almost an hour and a half to get ready.

What age can a girl start wearing mascara ?

I'm in 7th grade now. My parents told me I can't wear any type of makeup but lipgloss until i'm 16. My two sisters, which are now 23 and 24, started wearing makeup when they were 15 only because they didn't know how to apply it well. I know how to apply any type of makeup well enough for my age. But actually, the only thing I wish I could wear is Mascara. That's it. I'm allowed to wear lipgloss.. but all I want to wear is Mascara and Lipgloss. All the girls in my school are allowed to wear both mascara and lipgloss. But a lot of other girls are allowed to wear anything they want, cakey eye liner, eyeshadow, mascara, strong-colored lip stick, etc. Then there's me. Just wearing lipgloss looking ugly and plain. I wake up really pale and with eye bags all the time because I wake up at 6:30 am to get ready for school. I realize that with ONLY wearing mascara, I look more awake and not so gross-looking. All the girls my age wear mascara. I wish I could just wear that. I don't even realy like or care so much about eyeliner and eyeshadow. So guys, PLEASE help me on like how to convince my parents or just tell me what age you guys think I can wear mascara. Thanks(: !

Answer
You can wear it at any age, just as long as it's not too much and you wash it off, everything is safe once in moderation, my 9 year old cousin sometimes puts a bit on when shes on holidays, so any age really.

What age should you start talking to your kids about changes in their body?

Q. My daughter is 7 1/2 and most all of the young girls on my dads side of the family started thier periods at age 9, is she too young for me to explain what a period is? I didn't start until I was 12 but I don't want to not tell her in case it happens early, yet I don't want to freak the poor kid out at her age. Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
If the girls in your family started early then I think you should start straight away. My stepdaughter (who has lived with me from about 6 years old) also started at 9. I told her what is going to happen with her body at about age 8 (her breasts were already starting to develop) I gave her a pad and a clean pair of panties in a packet and put it in a secret compartment in her school bag. By the time she started at she had forgotten everything I had told her including her secret compartment. He hid it from everyone, throwing away her panties, etc. until I found one and had to explain everything again. Telling her that there is nothing to be ashamed about and it was perfectly natural. (my poor girl!) Anyway my advice is to keep discussing it with her so she is not scared when it happens to her. Also remember to tell her that if she hears anything at school that sounds odd, she must ask you and you will always tell her the truth and that some kids can twist things. Good luck, enjoy your daughter.

I'm in 7th grade. I'm not allowed to wear ANY type of makeup until i'm 16. I'm only allowed to wear lipgloss. All the girls in my school actually wear beyond more makeup than just mascara and lipgloss. Literally, i'm the only one that's not allowed to wear makeup at my school. I just don't feel confident when I go to school. I wake up looking pale and with bags under my eyes. I look disgusting, but i'm not allowed to wear ANY type of makeup but lipgloss. So I pretty much have no choice but to go to school looking gross. All I wish I could wear is mascara. I don't really care much about eyeliner, eyeshadow, foundation, etc. Just mascara. Believe it or not, in the mornings when I secretly tried on mascara ( I had eye bags, like always ) , It actually makes me look more awake and makes it look like I don't even have eye bags. Which I know it sounds like I only am a gross looking pale girl with eye bags and long, black eyelashes. But I really do look more awake with just mascara and lipgloss. I think just Mascara is fine for my age. At least i'm keeping it real simple and natural looking, i'm not looking all cakey. Really what age do you guys think is fine for me to start wearing the natural look on me of just lipgloss and mascara? Please answer &&' Thanks!(:

Answer
There is no set age for wearing makeup, as long as you know how to use it. If you are mature enough to be reasonable and know how much and what type of makeup is appropriate for your age, then you should be fine. For example, a young girl of 13 can look great with a bit of lip gloss, but she would look dreadful if she showed up at school wearing eye shadow and mascara. It will only be flattering if it is age appropriate, and you wear the right look for the right place.

Simple spring bake sale ideas? Other simple fundraising ideas? *will pick a best answer*?

Q. TL;DR at the end.

In my school we're doing Pasta for Pennies, or pennies for pasta, I always mix up the name :/. Basically, it's raising money for leukemia and other cancer research. The homeroom to raise the most money gets a pasta party from Olive Garden. Yeah, I know it's not real Italian food, but whatever. The team that won last year had their teacher's fiancee donate $600 bucks and they had it in the bag. My homeroom never wins anything, and we all really want to help out these kids with cancer. I'm in seventh grade. Me and a small group of girls my age want to do a bake sale, and maybe some other small fundraisers. My homeroom is already in the lead by $7, but we really want to win this. So do you have any ideas about some small fundraisers we could do, or recipes for our bake sale? Drinks are okay, too. Also, it's still freezing here in Massachusetts, so no outdoor activities. And here's my fundraising motto: KISS! (Keep it simple, stupid.).

TL;DR: Bake sale recipies and simple indoor fundraising ideas that a few thirteen year old girls could pull off would be appreciated. Thanks so much. I'll choose a best answer, too.

Answer
There are some really great answers here already!

I like Dubious's suggestion of a raffle and if you can't get a prize you could consider using a 50/50 raffle where you split the money raised 50% to you and 50% to the winner!

Bake Sales are solid ways of fundraising but can be quite laborious for small reward. Make sure that you make products that are really popular in your area. Also sell easy refreshments at the sale like tea and coffee and look for other ways of increasing your funds raised at your bake sale, like offering Silicone Bracelets as well. If a prospect doesn't want a Cookie etc. they may be interested in your other offers.

The other important thing about your Bake Sale is the awareness you raise for it. Make sure you promote it beforehand and during the sale with signs/banners etc. Make sure it's in a high traffic and high visibility location, and have some of your class walking around telling people about your Bake Sale, what you are fundraising for, and how they can support!

Another fundraising option you could consider is a Crowdfunder (Online Donations). Setup a fundraising page on a Crowdfunding website and get friends, family, etc to donate small amounts to your fundraiser!

You could also do this offline...

Get together with your class and write out a list of all the people (mainly adults) that you know. Then you go to all those people explaining what you're fundraising for, "how you are fundraising", and ask them to donate a specific amount, say $5 or $10. Not a lot of money for an individual so they should be happy to give, but if your class comes up with a list of 100 people and they all donate $5... That's $500 raised! Pretty impressive. Keep a check list of those names and make sure you tick of all of them.

If you do do it online through a Crowdfunding site you can still do this offline and just add your offline donations to your online total!

Other than those ideas you could also use a...

*Car Wash Fundraiser
*Penny Wars
*Scratch Cards
*Spinners
*Discount Fundraising Cards
*Walk-a-Thon
*Bowl-a-Thon

Hope those ideas help. If you have any questions about some of those ideas feel free to ask!

Regards,
Rob
