For Teens who go to high school: How are the schools in NYC?

Undecided

How are the high schools in the five boroughs? I have heard they aren't good and are filled with crime....

Answer
I am not a teen, but I am a NYC public school teacher and my daughter just finished the whole high school search business. She just got accepted into on of the top high schools in the City.

The truth is that we have some amazing, wonderful high schools in NYC, some that are really geared to a specific student and some that are great for just any all around good student. We ALSO have some terrible high schools where violence is not uncommon, graduation rates are low, and very little learning is going on.

Getting into a good high school is very tricky, and involves a LOT of work on the part of both parents and students. It can be an exhausting, frustrating experience. It is also weighted towards the top students - kids in the middle or on the bottom of their middle school classes can feel that their needs are very much ignored in the whole choice system.

For us, it really worked out great! My daughter was offered a seat in the first round of high school selection, which means she got into a "specialized school". The specialized schools are top schools that admit kids through a special process, different from the other schools. Most require that you take a special test called the SHSAT and score higher than other kids applying to the same school. One of them requires an audition in particular areas of the arts and top grades in middle school.

If a kid is offered a seat in that first round, they are offered a seat in a specialized school as well as a seat in another school they also applied to (the top school on their list that also wanted them.) My daughter was offered both a seat in the specialized school as well as the top school she listed on her list of 12 schools she would be willing to go to, which was a "selective" school. (Selective means that the school has certain requirements that must be met if they are even to consider the student.)

So it worked out well for us. But many kids cannot find enough schools they qualify for that they would be willing to go to. They are not good enough students to get into the "specialized" schools or the "selective" schools (the selective schools tend to be very small) and they have to put down schools they really DON'T want to go to. OR they aren't matched with ANY school on their list and must go into the THIRD round of matching. By that time, there are far fewer choices and the students in that third round really have very few options.

So it can be a difficult, complicated system and kids CAN end up in terrible high schools. On the other hand, those kids who DO get into the better schools (and there are a LOT of good schools, btw) do get a really incredible education.

A mixed bag, at best.

Answer
Lol, at prestigious private prep schools the kids do not dress up. My son attends a top prep school and the boys go in worn t-shirts and shorts and sandals much of the time. The girls dress a little bit nicer, but no one dresses like that.

At another school, where they are requesting $500,000 donations for siblings entering Kindergarten, the kids look like they've been shopping at Goodwill. This school probably has the most wealthy families (100 million isn't unusual), many celebrities send their kids there. Typically you might see well-off public school kids dress up because they're ticked off they didn't get into private school. (The private school kids tend to be more serious about their studies.)

No one wears hooker shoes to top prep schools, just isn't done! (Yes, they look like hooker shoes on 15 yr olds.)

You do know that Gossip Girl isn't real and that on NYC Prep, the kids go to the lowest tier private schools, none are in top private schools. They're kinda the rejects.

How can a 13 year old kid make $$$?

school bags for kids nyc

DKM fan

I live in NE Ohio, and I need a way to make to $. Please don't say snow shoveling because I have shoveled my brains out in the past weeks, but I need to make more $ faster! (i know most of you are wondering "why does he need so much money?") Well if you must know our school is taking a trip to NYC in march and the trip costs $400. Since my old man lost his job money is hard to come by around here. So any ideas?

Answer
Well, at 13, your options are limited, but here are a few suggestions:

-Snow Shoveling (sorry, but right now it's your best bet)
-Dog walker
-Bag boy at a grocery store
-Bus boy at a restaurant- you may even get to split tips with the wait staff!
-If you have a particular skill, get a job working at a business that can use your skill. Even if the initial job doesn't use that skill.
-Similarly, if you really like doing something, get a job doing that thing or work for a company that does that thing.
-Ask your teacher for ideas- she'll crap her pants!
-Ask your parents, cousins, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and grandparents for ideas- they'll crap their pants!
-Babysit

Since you are working towards a short-term goal, I recommend you bust your hump shoveling snow while the getting is good. And don't be afraid to ask for a fair price: 20 bucks for a driveway, 5-20 for a porch and sidewalk, depending on size. Ask other people who are shoveling driveways what they are charging and do the same. Also, if you already have customers, ask if they know anyone else who would hire you.

good music for a lyrical dance routine for children?

Lizzy

I will be teaching a dance club this year at one of the local elementary schools, because I want to be a dance teacher when I get out highschool/college. I am choosing a few different songs to choreograph to, but I am stuck on the lyrical one. It is for second graders so the kids are really young. The theme of the performance will be a mothers day theme, and I want the finale number to be a really pretty song that will melt the mothers hearts. Something new, pretty, and age appropriate, that will make the mothers cry! lol. Please help! Thanks!

Answer
Hi,

I just answered this question on the NYC page, and what I wrote is below.

But I just wanted to add that none of these people who have already answered sound like they know anything about NYC public schools! The first two only repeat the old nonsense about private school being the only alternative for kids in high school (which is dead wrong, but commonly believed by people with little knowledge of the public school system. The other person only mentions three of the top specialized schools in the City. While that's not exactly wrong, it's so limited as to be useless info. It's like telling someone who asks where to apply to college "well, I hear Harvard is a good school!" Again, it smacks of someone who knows little about the public school system.

Anyway, here is what I originally answered on the NYC page:

I am not a teen, but I am a NYC public school teacher and my daughter just finished the whole high school search business. She just got accepted into on of the top high schools in the City.

The truth is that we have some amazing, wonderful high schools in NYC, some that are really geared to a specific student and some that are great for just any all around good student. RunForYour

I can't stand living here! If I do not leave this house I WILL have a nervous breakdown!!! How do I call CPS without anyone finding out? Will I have to pack my bags?

Answer
Each state has a different number. You will have to look it up in a phone book or on the internet. If you use the internet, wipe out the history just like you should do with this site- each & every time you access it. If you do not want anyone finding out that you called then do not use a cell phone where they can check the log or get a log of called numbers with the bill. Call from a pay phone or a friend's.

Another idea than you calling is going to your principal, school nurse, school counselor, or any teacher. They are mandated professionals so if you tell them you are a victim of abuse they HAVE to call CPS. CPS will come to the school, and talk to you.

Another people you can tell is your doctor. There is two ways- #1 is to show up at the office and tell the desk person it is an emergency and you have to see the doctor. Can he/she fit you in? Then sit in the chairs until he/she can.

#2Make an appointment for the same day. You do not want the office to call you twith a reminder. Lying to the scheduler is acceptable. Say you are coming in for a stomach ache or something wrong with your bruised body part(s). Apologize to the doctor. They will understand.

In either case if the person at the desk gives you grief over the insurance card and co-pay, ask to speak to the office manager IN PRIVATE. Tell her the real reason you are there to report abuse. I sat IN PRIVATE so the whole waiting room and everyone in the office does not know your business.

You can also talk to your priest/minister/pastor/rabbi/ iman etc. about what is happening. I have alot of life experience so I have to warn you not to do this if you do not think the person will report the abuse and will tell your abuser(s).

If you are homeschooled, see if you can go to the library. Get dropped off with a couple of hours to do research. Ask to talk to the head librarian. Tell him/her you need to call CPS could you please use their phone to do so. She won't say no. She most likely will put you in a private office. It will give you time to talk to CPS without your abuser knowing. If your abuser checks up on you, you were just asking her to help you.

What happens after CPS does has alot to do with your case and the state laws. CPS will investigate your claim of abuse. They will talk to the person making the report. And most likely you. You will be assigned a case worker. It will help if you remember any doctor or ER visits due to injuries. If there are any photos that show any bruises? Did any people see bruises or hear the mental abuse.? In some states, CPS can make the abuser leave the home. They can find you emergency shelter in a youth shelter or foster care while they can maybe get a grandparent, aunt or uncle, an older sibling who is an adult, or someone else who will take you in. You might start thinking of who might be able to take you in. In a couple of days it will go to family court. The abuser(s) will be able to tell the judge their side. The judge will decide what is going to happen on a temporary basis. I haven't been to court so I can not tell you exactly what goes on.

From a safe phone, you can call Covenant House Crisis Hotline at 1-800-999-9999 for help. They provide confidential and immediate crisis intervention for kids. And will answer and help with ANY crisis. They are good people. They got their start helping the runaways and throwaway street kids in NYC. Throwaways are literally kids throw out on the streets by their parent(s). Just leave abandoned somewhere to fend for themselves.

CPS is not something you play with. Accusing someone of child abuse is serious stuff. That is why the reportees are protected. It can make things at home even worse. I spent all this time and effort to reach out to you in case this cry for help is real. There are too many kids out there getting the crap literally beat out of them .

I hope things work out. Please don't do anything rash. There are alot of people who are willing to help if you reach out to them. But see the above. If you call not call CPS tonight then go to school tomorrow and tell someone. Keep safe.
