I just wonder that like most of the vietnamese girl who borned here are prettier than others. I'm viet too but I'm a fob . Like how they wear their clothes and all the clothes and bags are cute!! I mean where they find those and how do they know what to wear with what?

first of all, it doesnt matter that they were born here. being born here does not make you prettier than if you were born in vietnam originally. and second of all, you can just ask them where they get their stuff. it doesnt hurt to ask. (: or you can just probably go to the mall and figure it out for yourself.

Vietnam journey in August?

Hey!

A good way to see all of Vietnam is to get on the open tour bus (offered by tons of companies). You can then start at either the top or bottom of the country and work your way around. I did Saigon, Nha Trang, Hue, Hoi An and Hanoi. There are tons of other stops available- keep in mind though that these bus rides take tons of time and are not very comfortable. You can get 'sleeper' buses for nighttime journeys and save yourself the money you would have spent at a hostel, but a lot of people find it difficult to sleep on the sleeper buses (lots of honking, bright lights, locals fighting, and a generally bumpy ride). Not sure what your budget is if you are the type of person who requires comfort, I know you can pay more for nicer buses that actually are comfortable (I was on a super strict budget myself).

Saigon is a great fast paced city where you can meet tons of people who are also backpacking. I think the guide books recommend only a few places in the city- but if you try to book a room they are usually full because lots of backpackers feels the need to stay somewhere Lonely Planet recommended. When you get into town with your bags locals will see you and will run out and offer you a room-go check them out (donât go with anyone too shady!)- we stayed at great places with huge clean rooms, balconies, cable and private bathrooms for the same price as our friends who shared a dorm. Saigon is a busy busy place and youâll have no trouble keeping yourself occupied. From Saigon you can go to the Chu Chi tunnels which is a popular day trip. We also did the local water park which was super fun â 10,000 tiny kids and a group of 8 adults on extreme waterslides. The Reunification Palace is popular and interesting. You can easily stay in Saigon for a week.

Nha Trang is much quieter than Saigon (smaller as well) with less going on. The beach there is huge and for whatever reason no one uses it (we went during peak season and it was still empty!)

Hue is tiny and has enough to see for a day-two days max. There is an old fortress with a Forbidden Chinese City inside. Hue isnât too popular of a destination so you wonât see a huge number of other tourists.

Hoi An is my favorite place by far- the city is beautiful and the historic districts are spectacular. The renovated historic area sits along the canal which makes the city very picturesque. We did a great cooking class with Red Bridge Cooking School- they have a restaurant off the canal and you book your reservation there- they then take you to an organic farm where you pick herbs, then to their kitchen which is a semi-outdoor area where you cook and drink beer all day. You then take a boat back to the area of town with their restaurant- I highly highly recommend this class- everyone I have ever met who has taken it has loved it. It was a bit out of our price range though, but worth every penny. We made our own Pho (including the noodles) and all types of other local dishes. Good times. Hoi An is also hugely popular for getting custom made clothing and shoes. I had a backpack with my gear for one year which meant no buying anything, but I would have loved to. Other people we met had great custom boots/heels made, fancy jacketsâ¦basically you can take them any picture from any magazine and they will reproduce the garment for you at a fraction of the cost. The local food in Hoi An is nice as well-try the white rose. Along the canal you will find a huge tent covered area with maybe 20 little stalls (it looks like one restaurant, but each section of tables is owned by different people). Try the deep fried wontons with shrimp on top + beer. Yum. We tried a few stalls, but ended up liking the stall closest to the water the best. Across the canal on the less touristy side are a bunch of restaurants and bars- they do give free shots and offer good deals on their already cheap beer.

Hanoi is pretty-we did do the water puppet show (cheesy ,but good for a laugh and the musicians are pretty neat). You can also get to Halong Bay on a day trip-every hostel/hotel offers a package. We went when it was cold/foggy so we couldnât see the great scenery, but our friends made it over there when it was warm and got to swim and enjoy the nice weather. Great trip, try to go in nice weather though! Hanoi also has the cheapest beer EVER, something like 10 cents a glass- they open kegs on the side of the street and you sit on little kiddy chairs and enjoy the brew. Hanoi also has amazing bakeries with French pastries - they are some of the best pastries Iâve had anywhere in the world!

Make sure to eat Pho every chance you get!

Any ideas on 80's stuff I can put in a bag...?

My art assignment requires that I come up with a "type of bag"... Basically, we need to think of a bag (i.e. school bag, doctor's bag, tool bag, etc.) that interests us so we can paint a still of the contents inside of it. I just decided I wanted to do an "80's bag" but I'm having trouble thinking of what might go into that bag... All I can think to put in it right now is a rubik's cube. What ideas do you have? What objects- that would fit in a bag- defined the 80's? Please help :-)

Non-Fiction: David Halberstam's "The Best and the Brightest," OK, I had a public school education and the Vietnam War was *not* taught in my classes...so I set about educationg myself. This book was very helpful.

Fiction: Tim O'Brien is a talented writer who would be successful no matter what he wrote..."The Things They Carried" is a masterpiece as well as "If I Die in a Combat Zone..."

But my very favorite was "Keeping Watch" by, incredibly, a woman, Laurie R. King

this answer is sort of a mixed bag of "Fiction" and "Non-Fiction" as it was a comic book put out by the DOD between 1968 -1972 that today yields a small fortune if you can find them in "good" to "excellent" condition. Is it disrespectful to carry a military bag if you aren't in the military?

my grandfather passed away recently and we were going through his house, deciding if we wanted to keep anything. I found his old rucksack that he was issued during Vietnam. It has his number and his (and my) last name stenciled on it. The bag was in great shape so I decided to take it. It's good sized and sturdy,with no visible wear. I was thinking about using it to carry my textbooks, but I wonder if it would be disrespectful to carry the bag since I'm not in the service?

Not at all. Lots of people like wearing military garb. Kinda like supporting your favorite NFL team.

As a veteran, I don't view it as being disrespectful and unless you do something disrespectful with it. So don't show up at a KKK rally or OWS riot wearing his uniform.

Carrying your textbooks is completely fine. My daughter uses my old OD green map case to carry her stuff to school sometimes.

I finished High School 1963 and was drafted into the US Army 1965.
1) NO. 2) A lot of it was calming and romantic. A significant part of Rock and Roll was humorous My favorite of all time was Duane Eddie's "Rebel Rouser". Plenty of them were naughty, but I was too stupid to know it. 4) I trusted the government. We understood that nothing was really free unless it was stolen. Cheating was disgraceful. 5) Yes, the boys were supposed to be suave and comb their hair back just like the "Fonz" did. But he wasn't on TV till 10 years or more later. I liked to rebel against imposed pier pressure and do the opposite. (old nerd). 7) NO, I distrusted their leaders. 8) I was afraid I would have to go over there and kill people I had no complaint with. I did not understand it, still don't. I served with caution and eyes wide open. 9) As cautious as I was of the Vietnam war, I thought those people were Pee Babies. 10) Real foul language was not used. "Kid, Gads, Snazy, Stooge and I used "Scum Bag" once in the mixed company of an Army school, as someone jerked the fine hair on the back of my neck. Everything got real quiet all of a sudden. I honestly did not know, but thought it appropriate. 11) I was living near San Francisco CA at the time and in my first year of Junior College studying electronics. My dad was war damaged and a drunk. I had one relative killed and another shot up in WW II. Another uncle suffered the Korean war right after. So Kennedy's death was to me an expected risk. I was amused at all the commotion. His vice president was glad he was gone. I served under Johnson. 12) Bed Time for Bonzo (no not really, that was the 50's, but I was never more excited in anticipating a movie than that one! ) We went to the "Drive In" for movies. Perhaps my all time 60's favorite was Lee Marvin's "Cat Baloo". I laughed till my guts hurt! I thought Presley was an over rated slouch! I liked, "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Me & my first real girlfriend went to see it and she put my hand where I did not think possible. To this day when I hear "Moon River" I'll stop what I'm doing and drift back.

Is there a better place to donate clothes than the Salvation Army?

Q. I'm a teen and I have done community service there before. I found that they tend to throw out any clothing that doesn't seem somewhat new. Also, if there's a bag of clothing and they don't like what's on top, they trash the whole thing! Personally, I think that's a waste.

Is there any way to channel old clothes to places (perhaps other than America) that will accept perfectly acceptable clothes?

well, you could always go local. churches and schools tend to collect clothing donations to give to homeless shelters and such. look around for those.
local shelters and organizations also usually take in clothing so check out your neighborhood.
places that are similar in concept to the salvation army are goodwill and the vietnam veterans of america.

Just read a book dealing with this...and not much...

The typical NVA Soldier was issued and carried..

1 Soviet made AK-47
1 Soviet or Chinese made chest bandoleer
5 magazines
1 Soviet made bayonet
2 pajama type uniforms
2 pair of sandals
1 pair of canvas boots (sometimes)
1 soviet backpack...which was very basic..no frame, etc
1 soviet made poncho/groundcloth
1 light wool sweater
1 Soviet entrenching tool
1 bayonet
1 mosquito net (these were a big deal after they started losing thoudsands to malaria early in the war)
1 sleeping mat (bamboo)
1 small personal hygiene kit/repair kit
1 small first aid kit
1 soviet made canteen
1 rice bag
1 rudimentary Soviet mess kit
Required communist propoganda reading materials (they received about 2-4 hours a day of politcal indoctrination even during combat ops)

Should we leave it up to the soldiers to come home or to stay? How about bringing them home little at a time?

The military is built on discipline and order. While all members of the military have thier opinions of why they are deployed or whether they should be or not is great. However, not everyone in the military understands the 'big picture' when it comes to national security. It is easy for us to say bring them all home now or why were we ever there in the first place? The point of the matter is, the members of all branches of the military swore an oath to follow the lawful orders of those appointed over them, to include the President of the United States.

Asking a Soldier, Marine, Airman or Sailor if they want to come home, I am sure most would say yes. However, if you were to ask to them at what cost to their family and friends and most would reply that the sacrifice they are making is more than enough to pay that cost. The military is a volunteer organization and has been for many years (last draftees were during Vietnam era). So the men and women in the armed forces are there because they volunteered at one point to serve their country.

Right, wrong or indifferent, our military is deployed because our leaders (the same people we vote for) have decided this is in our nations best interest. As for a phasing out of troops until those deployed are home, will probably be one of the main topics of debate during the up coming national elections. Just the sheer volume of logistics that would be required in bring our service men and women home would be enormous. So a pack your bag, we are leaving tomorrow situation would never happen.

We all have a say in what happens to our nation, our military and our families, it is called freedom of speech and the right to vote. Voice your opinion by voting for the candidate that stands for what you believe it. If all of the eligible Americans voted this way, the politicians would be more likely to listen to the public.
