I'm just curious as to what will be going on. Will the classes be hard? Is it scary transitioning from a middle school to a high school? Might I add, my high school has a separate building for all the freshman... There are 1200 kids in 9th grade alone. It's crazy. :o
Should I take my backpack the first day?

Answer
ha im starting in 4 days now, so here are some tips!!!

BEING PREPARED:

k so today we had a freshman orientation so they gave is this boring but helpful lecture and we got to tour the school and try to find our classes

if your highschool doesnt offer a program like that, see if you can just come on your own and walk through the halls and find your classrooms

get organized!!! if they didnt give you a supply list (our school doesnt give them out) then you probably find out what you need for class on your first day. but get the basics; pens pencils and notebooks. so the first day bring a notebook and the teachers are gonna tell you exactly what you need for class. also, figure out how to stay organized because the teachers arent going to baby you and tell you to get binders and folders etc. (unless you absolutely need them for the class). so find out what works best for you. in my highschool and in most highschools, you have to carry around a tote (because there wont be time to go back to your locker each period) or a backpack, whatever works best for you. and they usually give out books and stuff on the first day or throughout the first week, so its good to have something to put the books in when you have a 4 minute passing period and you dont have time to go to your locker all the time....

SOCIALIZING:
find out if you have any classes with your friends, and if you dont then just have a positive attitude! first impressions tend to stick, so wear something nicer, have a positive (but not overly hyper, immature) attitude because if you smile and look approachable then people will want to get to know you, but if you're overly excited and hyper, you might come off as immature or annoying...approach people and be approachable! smile! even if you're painfully shy (like me) dont be afraid to approach people they dont bite!! and remember, you're mixed in with people from other schools so they dont know who you are, so you can start fresh and have whatever reputation you want to have. and have a good sense of humor, because people like to laugh =) break out of your shell because no one has to know that you're shy or you have an...interesting... past haha well whatever the case may be because they dont know you and they might judge you at first but change their opinions once they get to know you. oh and try to make some friends with upperclassmen so they can give you advice and be nice or at least respectful to the teachers!

APPEARANCE:
you might want to dress nicer ( you dont have to go super-prep or anything) and its okay to let loose and show up in sweats every once in a while. just make sure to keep your personal sense of style (im both preppy and sporty, so i usually wear a hollister/abercrombie shirt with basketball shorts, or sometimes i just let loose and wear a sweatshirt or a loose t-shirt some days)

if you wear make up, DO NOT OVERDO IT!!! i do wear make up, but its just eyeliner and a teeny bit of mascara (i basically wipe the brush clean of the gunky black stuff before i apply) and cover up where i need it. you dont need foundation and eye shadow and lipstick!!! in 8th grade some girls wore eyeshadow and it just looked stupid cuz they were still young! and it makes you seem/look kinda fake (people that dont know you are going to judge you by looks) and dont wear like heels and stuff, just gym shoes or flip flops or birkenstocks (which i personally dont wear) are fine. just make sure you look good, but dont make it your number one priority. and guys dont like girls with a ton of make up on anyway....

ACADEMICS:
do well in school!!! education should be your number one priority! highschool is kind of faster paced, so dont be afraid to ask questions or ask for extra help, because then you'll just be more behind. your GPA is important for college!! get to know your teachers and figure out what study ways are good for you (such as study groups, a quiet environment, etc.) and ABSOLUTELY NEVER PROCRASTINATE!!! if you get homework on monday and its due on thursday, get it done earlier in the week so you dont have to worry about it the night before! and try to get work done before hanging out with friends, or if you do hang out with them right after school, see if you can hang out at someones house and do homework and then do the fun stuff you usually do. highschool can be one of the best experiences in your life, just as long as you stay on top of everything and dont let it completely overwhelm you (kinda hard not to let that happen when you're stressing and drowning in piles of homework) and make sure to join some kind of club/sport because then you can be admired for your talents, and you can always meet new friends there!

alright thats all the advice i can think of right now, hope i helped!!

oh and if you have any older brothers or sisters (sadly im the oldest) or if your friends have older siblings that have been to highschool, ask them!!! that way you'll know what to expect! (it helped me feel kinda calmer about going to school, cuz i now know what to expect)

depending on the classes you're taking (im in all honors) you might have a LOT of homework or a manageable amount. they dont usually pile 4 hours o

What are these parents thinking? I saw something today that shocked me, maybe I tend to think the worst ?

Sunny

Today on the back of a car, I saw that on the spare tire cover the car owner had an enlarged photo of three children printed on it. I'm assuming it was a photo of their kids. The first thought that ran through my head was "Way to get your kids targeted for abduction". Are parents who do this not thinking? Would you, as a parent, do this? Or am I just a worry wart?

Answer
I agree with you. And honestly, no one cares to look at a picture of their kids anyway, not unless they are a child sex predator.
I was molested for 12 years in my own home. Which goes to show that parents need to pay far more attention to detail.
This is a worse idea that printing their names on the outside of their jackets or backpacks, which experts are strongly against doing.
You don't think too much, they think too little.
