school bags deals image

I found a US Army issue sleeping bag for sale but the guy selling it doesn't know if it's for moderate or extreme cold weather. I know that one will be heavier/bulkier than the other but I don't have anything to compare it to. Is there any other way to tell?
Answer
The modern US military sleeping bags for extreme cold temps are modular, some are 4 piece. They have tags on the bag that describes them. Here is one for an example;

A review of them;

And here is the company that now provides some of the sleeping bags for the US Army;

Here is the one I may buy soon;

Here is a forum talking about those bags;

Now the older military bags were heavy on piece bags with down for extreme cold. Some loved them and many hated them.
So the bag you are interested in may be an older model and if thatâs the case forget it. The newer modular bags are lighter and far more versatile.
With out information on that bag I canât tell you what it is. It could be one piece of a modular system or an old school bag.
Before you invest be certain of what youâre getting by researching more. E-bay has some good deals BUT also has some way over priced. Example I have seen these bags on e-bay go for $200 bucks;
http://www.rddusa.com/Military-Surplus-U-S-G-I-Extreme-Cold-Military-Sleeping-Bags-Army-Sleeping-Bag-Extreme-Cold-Weather-Intermediate-Army-Surplus-Military-Field-Gear-Gi-Military-Accessories-Equipment-Camping-Gear.html
Here is a modular Military bag for under $100 on e-bay.

But then I have been ripped off a few times on e-bay and no longer buy there.
Oh you asked about foam ground pads in another q. Go with closed cell not open cell or the self inflating ones. I HATE air mattresses and self inflating pads they have ticked me off too many times due to leaks at the most inopportune moment! And get one at least 2 inches think. Consider a sleeping cot as well for a good night sleep.

How can i prepare for culinary school?
Jessie
I am applying to a culinary school and I already know about some baking techniques but I was wondering if there are any techniques or anything that I need to work on before attending classes? I am going to study baking and pastry btw. Do most students go into these classes with no prior knowledge of the subject? Thanks everyone!
Answer
Most students likely have some background since they're selecting this branch of the culinary arts. Granted it's likely minimal, although there will possibly be some with a moderate deal of experience.
Things I'd recommend to work (to help with potential future classes) would be:
1) Terminology - (Understanding most basic terms will help with lecture comprehension)
2) Basic methods - (This can be hit/miss as they may have a slightly different way to do certain things. However it's good to get multiple perspectives on the same method. Sure, you may know IN THEORY how to knead dough or cut/blend properly, but things don't always turn out as planned)
3) Styles - Cooking is as much an art as a science, I'd recommend just watching shows on Food Network, looking at presentation styles on the internet and just being observant of everything around you. Creating an appetizing appearance can be difficult as mindsets change.
Hope you enjoy your classes!
Edit: I just thought of another skill that would be great for you to start working on before classes, as you'll likely be using it quite a bit in this area.
Practice piping! Purchase a cloth piping (pastry) bag and start getting a feel for doing repetitive/stylish designs. (Practice making even borders on a block wrapped in plastic wrap, spelling with a fine tip, ect) This is much like learning to write your name, sure you can wait until you're in school to learn it, but it's a huge advantage for you to have some experience beforehand. This will most definitely help in the long term to get a head start, as it's not easy for most people as you're managing applied pressure/movement speed/stability/precision/endurance and so on.
