how do you keep your room clean?
Q. I ask this because i have the habit of being messy not just with my room but with my book bag, binder, locker. What do you do to keep your room clean?
Answer
Have less stuff. It's easier to keep your clothes closet neat if you only have the clothes you actually wear in there. If you have dress clothes and costumes, consider putting them in a canvas hanging bag, or a storage box, so they do not clutter up your daily clothes. Its better to have fewer clothes and do laundry regularly, or put it away right away, than to have a lot of clothes that get spilled all over for you to toss in the air looking for the shirt you are supposed to wear for some activity.
Have a place for everything, and regularly put everything in it's place. It helps considerably if you have more places than things.
Have some empty space--an empty shelf, an empty drawer, an empty coathook, some empty hangers. When things get hectic, this makes it much easier to put things away. .
Have routines.
When you come home from school, empty your pockets into a basket or bowl or tray on your desk. This will prevent losing money or important notes in the laundry, or having to check dirty clothes and every jacket and coat you own to find your wallet, keys, other important things you carry daily.
When you do your homework, unpack your bookback completely, sort out trash, money, loose papers, etc. After you are finished neaten everything and pack your bookbag neatly. Try to always use the same pockets for calculator, pencils, etc.
Some routines can be pattern planned. For example:
On Monday, deal with Money (make sure you have lunch money, for the week, etc.)
On Tuesday, deal with Trash (bring a bag to round up trash from lockers, clean out trash from desk, empty trash bin in your room)
On Wednesday...whatever begins with W in your world...and so on.
You can also have several easy routines during the day.
Before school routine--it's enough to get to school on time--try to make your bed and pick up things that got kicked underneath..books, games, shoes, socks, phone, alarm clock...
After school routine--sort your pockets and bookbag--make a mental note of your homework and review vocabulary words or other things you must memorize for the next quiz.
Before Dinner Routine--carry dishes you may have in your room to the kitchen.
After Dinner Routine--review vocabulary words, and other things you must memorize. Gather up things that belong in your room that you may have scattered about, and pick up stuff that does not belong on your floor or bed.
Homework Routine--
Before Bed Routine--check the weather forecast and lay out your clothes for tomorrow, take a minute to put dirty clothes in the hamper, put away clean laundry, generally neaten your closet, charge phone or gadgets. If you review those vocabulary words etc one more time, I guarantee you an A on the quiz. You will also retain what you've learned longer.
We all follow the same routine everyday. Some routines are functional but some routines are dysfunctional. I had the dysfunctional routine of madly circling my home looking for my keys, in every pocket, and "funny place" every time I left the house until I got the functional routine of always putting them on a hook on the door. It seems fussy to start a new routine, but once it becomes habit, you do the functional thing as effortlessly as you used to drop things where they fell.
If you have difficulty establishing a home for something important, you can tape a piece of bright paper with big letters {PHONE} in the place where you want to keep it. It will remind you to go find the phone in the couch cushions or wherever you dropped it, and put it in its place. When the habit is secure, you can remove the paper.
