School Supply List???

~Kimmy~

My dad is going to take me and my 2 brothers school supply shopping on Sunday. My list already came and my older brother needs the same supplies i do so it doesn't matter if he didn't get his yet. My younger brother is in elementary school so he doesn't need the same supplies we do and his list didn't come yet. If it doesn't come tomorrow then he can't be prepared for the first day of school since we can't go shopping any other day and the 1st day of school is September 3rd. I tried going onto the school website and i found out that i could download the list to my computer. I tried to download it but it didn't work. Could you try to download it to your computer and copy and paste it to the answer???

The website is http://baldwin.k12.ny.us

Click on the link that says "Back To School"

Once the page has loaded, 2 blue boxes will pop up.

Under the 2nd blue box, select Brookside and wait for the next page to load

Then just follow the directions from there to download it.

How much money do you spend on school supplies (per child)?

beachchick

New York state just gave $200 per child to welfare recipients for school supplies. I think that is way more than school supplies cost (I've never done the supply shopping, so I don't really know). I am a college students and with text books I have spent less than $200 on back to school supplies. I don't think clothing should be counted in the school supply cost, so I just don't see how $200 per child for school supplies is reasonable, it seems like a lot, about how much do you spend per child?

**I totally agree with working parents getting assistance to help with grocery bills and stuff, but it just seems like $200 is a lot for school supplies (although high schooler's might need it for graphing calculators and such-but most school will loan those out for the year). I do not agree with us feeding adults who choose not to work though.
I looked up a suburban 3rd grade school supply list, looked up prices at staples.com and I got just under $50. So if this is around the norm, isn't $200 excessive?
Mommy of 5-- you spend $150 total on all four kids-wow $200 per kid really is generous. I guess these kids are getting new outfits when their peers whose parents don't get assistance might not be able to afford new clothes or maybe have to re-use old backpacks. The worst part is that no one was notified (meaning no one in the public at all) so many parents have already started using the money elsewhere (ie. one store owner said some parents were excited to have more money for beer, cigarettes, etc. that they didn't know they were getting)
Ganja-how am I bitter? I just think $200 per child for school supplies is a little excessive. I don't think it is unfair that I didn't get any money, as I come from an upper middle class family and don't need the money. I was just wondering what most people spend because I truly felt $200 was a bit much. And honestly my main thought was that many non-welfare/foodstamp families (not even including mine) don't have $200 to spend on each children for extra stuff like new outfits and the best school supplies, etc. So no, I'm not being bitter smart one, I was not thinking in the way you are ASSuming I was. It has nothing to do with me. I am an extremely compassionate person and volunteer for and with poorer people. Which is why my first thought was they get $200 per child, paid for through the taxes of people who don't have that much to spend on there own children for back to school. I think giving them something is helpful, maybe $100, but $200 is definitely too much. So ur wrong
Ganja-to argue in an easy way you can understand
"you sound .... unconcious and concerned soley about 'what you didnt get and how unfair that is"-- I find it completely fair that I didn't get money for school supplies-I don't need it (not a kid and don't have any and I have money and parents with money to buy supplies). I am aware of people needing assistance, especially those who don't get it. They don't need $200 for school supplies, other low income families who don't qualify for help (and even middle class families) can't afford to spend $200 per child in a good year for back to school.

Why dont you find a little humility and compassion in your life?
I never said they don't deserve help, I just said $200 seemed like a bit much for school supplies. I am a very humble person-if u met me you wouldn't think i come from an upper middle class family.
You single out poor people to make yourself sound righteous -umm no I'm just saying $200 per kid is a lot. righteous? no, nice try.
Ganja-would $200 for back to school have helped your reading ability-I said "not even including mine" (to sow that I'm not concerned with my family not getting anything-b/c we don't need it we can afford school supplies-we work) in the people who can't afford $200. That $200 coulda bought you a reading comprehension tutor. Clothing is not a back to school supply. The welfare and wic money their parents already get to raise their child includes the basic needs of clothing and shoes. Taxpayers shouldn't be paying taxes to buy new cloths and shoes for these kids, when their own kids are using hand me downs, last years cloths, last years shoes, last years back pack, etc. Go to France or China and live where everyone gets what they need and doesn't have to work for it. The government could have given the money to the schools to buy the supplies-buying in bulk if would be cheaper per child and 8 times as many kids who can't afford new school supplies can now have school supplies.

Answer
I have 4 children in school. From Kindergarten to 5th grade. No including book bags I spent $75 for all of them, and that included extra pencils, pens, notebooks, etc for home use. With book bags included I spent roughly $150. on all 4.

I don't buy name brand I buy whats cheap. Like the folders I buy the cheap ones and once we find out what they are being used for the kids are free to "decorate" them the way they like. They can also print things off the net and put them on there. I am not going to spend $2.00 on a Hannah Montana folder when i can get the colored ones the school asks for, for $.15

So I agree $200.00 for just supplies is way to much.

Yes it is way to much, I always wait until the school supply specials most stores have to buy for my kids, and like i said I'll buy the item for $0.15 over $2.00. I have also in the past had my kids reuse bookbags. I'll buy them really nice ones with no characters 1 year and it has to last them 2. I don't buy those cheap $5.00 ones they fall apart way to easy.
