What will likely happen to the children of Russian deep cover spies in the United States?

So these Russian spies have been caught, their kids were born on US soil, and are still minors. Apparently two Russian spies were paired together and had children to further their "cover." So the kids are innocent but what kind of lives will they have, will the CIA harass them?

Answer
I heard on the news yesterday that one couple has already made arrangements to send their young kids to the wife's sister in Russia. Some of the kids are older, in the late teens, early 20's. Although I haven't heard anything specific about them, I'm guessing that they'll be staying in the U.S. at least until their parent's trials are over. Can you imagine what it would be like to be born and raised in the U.S. and then, POOF!, find yourself living in Russia? These kids obviously won't have relatives in the U.S. - or, if they do, it'll be miracle. The little ones will probably go to family in Russia. The older kids might be allowed to decide if they'll stay here or move to Russia... if they stay, maybe good foster or sponsoring parents can be found for them. It would be a shame if they were jsut cast into the foster care system to wander and fail.

Here'a a breakdown of the 7 kids involved and their ages.
"Some of those kids are old enough to understand what's happening, like the 20- and 16-year-old sons being raised in leafy Cambridge, Mass., by Donald Howard Healthfield and Tracey Lee Ann Foley. These kids, who came to court to watch their parents' arraignment, Dr. Nancy Rappaport a professor of psychiatry at Harvard told the Boston Globe, will "have to wrestle with a tremendous sense of betrayal that things aren't what they seem.'' That's because their parents weren't just spies â they literally weren't who they claimed to be. Healthfield and Foley were posing as French Canadians. Donald Healthfield, it turns out, was a Canadian who died in infancy. It was a stolen identity. Were the kids in on it? Most accounts believe they were not.

"Same goes for Vicky Paleaz and Juan Lazaro in Yonkers, N.Y., whose children were 17 and 38, respectively. (The 17 year-old, a Julliard trained pianist, even shares the assumed name of his father )

"But while a teen and an adult child can understand what is happening â even if betrayed, even if traumatized â what happens to the elementary-aged and younger kids? What of Katie Murphy, 11, who returned from a birthday slumber party to discover her parents had been taken away? She and her sister Lucy, 7, born to Rick and Cynthia Murphy of Montclair, an enclave of writers and liberals just outside Manhattan, were last seen schlepping backpacks and pillows, accompanied by an FBI agent. The New Jersey Star Ledger reported little Katie had just graduated the fifth grade at Hillside Elementary School, picking up an armful of awards. Photos show her, face blurred to protect her identity to some degree, sprawled like any other kid across her parents. What happens next?
And in Arlington, Va., just a few minutes from downtown D.C., Michael Zottoli and Pamela Mills had toddlers -- a 1- and 3-year-old. Now in the custody of the state, until their parents' chosen guardian is approved by the FBI. Some reports say they'll be on a plane to relatives in Russia soon.

Need a good backpack diaper bag for two kids?

KookiePenn

Hi. Please, I going on a trip & I am looking for a good backpack/diaper bag which can fit essentials & a little extra (mommy's cell phone, wallet, etc). Any suggestions? I've heard Baby Sherpa is good? Any other brands? Thanks in advance.

Answer
I always like using children's backpacks, especially since then I could have one for each of my kids that they liked or picked out. Especially with my daughter-- that way she wouldn't complain that it wasn't cute. Also, if you get a backpack and don't beat it up, oyu can use it when they are kindergarten, first grade, while they still don't need something big. This article has 3 really good options: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5652566/the_top_3_backpacks_for_girls_in_elementary.html?cat=25

I also like all of the backpacks by Wildkin. You can find Wildkin bags and all other kinds at eBags.com-- I love this website. They always have discounts and they carry good brand like Northface. Also, Land's End has great bags and you can get things monogramed.

Where can I find a childs mesh backpack?

~Jenn~

My kids' school has to have a mesh or clear backpack and in the past, the clear plastic ones just don't hold up. My 11 year old has a Jansport backpack, but my 4 year old will be starting school in the fall and I'd like to find him a backpack that's his size. The only ones I've ever seen in Walmart hand down to the elementary school kids knees. I would love to find one that could be personalized for him, but that's just the icing on the cake.

Answer
academy. they sell mesh jansport at reasonable prices
also try most athletic stores, and sports stores
but academy will over best price.

why do kids in elementary school/middle school use backpacks, stop in high school, then go back to them for college? what's the reasoning? society? peer pressure? lack of committment to school?

Answer
In high school they don't care for studying too much they just want to look cool.
Than in university they understand they need they're stuff for school so they carry it.

cheers

My kid is entering a public elementary school in the US: what should I be expected to pay during school year?

2pasc

I am new to the US, so I am curious what should I have to pay:
- books?
- kids activities?
- food?
- tuition?

Answer
In public school, you don't have to pay tuition, it comes out of your taxes. You might have to pay for his lunch, but you can apply for free lunch. Books are usually free as long as he doesn't damage them in any way or lose them, and kid activities such as field trips you do have to pay for but you can choose whether or not to let him go on the field trips. You will have to get him school supplies such as folders, pencils, backpack, etc. The teacher should give you a list of what you need to buy

What school supplies/things would you get for your kids even if their school provides all supplies?

The elementary schools here have started having parents pay a supply fee where the school'll provide all of the supplies rather than have parents buying them themselves (schools say they get a discounted rate for buying in bulk, everything's the same bla bla).

What supplies would you get for your kids anyway, just as part of that "you are special, school is special, and these things are unique to you to make the whole thing more enjoyable" idea?

Answer
Things in addition to the list would be weather appropriate outerwear. If it rains a lot you may want to invest in a good pair of rain boots and a waterproof coat. If it rains in the winter make sure the winter jacket is waterproof as well as the winter boots. It doesn't hurt to have an extra pair of mittens in the backpack in the winter if it gets cold where you live. Labels are good to have, but not necessarily a must. I order the label stickers with my child's name. Every time I go out in the playground someone has left behind a backpack, hoodie, hat or a pair of mitts. It's also good to have the indoor/outdoor shoes labelled. They are usually stored in cubbies with other children's clothing. It's easy for things to get mixed up. You would be amazed at how many kids come to school with identical items.

1. Craft Supplies (Paint, Scissors - different types of scissors, Paper - different types of paper, Crayons, Markers, Pencil Crayons, Sparkles, Glue - different types, Feathers, Fluff Balls, Googly Eyes, Stickers - different types, etc.) <--- they often get projects during the year which requires some at home creativity
2. Pencils/Pens
3. Lined Paper
4. Blank Paper
5. Backpack
6. Lunch Box
7. Water Bottle
8. Thermos (for hot items like soup, pasta, etc.)
9. Plastic Containers (to store extra lunch items)
10. Tape
11. Stapler (they come in handy on occasion)
12. Ruler
13. Three Ring Binder (if old enough)
14. Calendar (Handy for organizing the schedule. My son is in kindergarten and even that has it's fair share of activities)
15. Travel Sized Tissue (good for those cold morning runny noses)

Edit* Even with school supplies purchased through the school, you still need supplies at home.
