Will I be in cold if I wear like this in the UK?

FallingApa

I will be going to Manchester, Glasgow and Iceland (not uk)

The style im planning to wear alot is

Dress (not knitted, just thin cotton fabric)
Tights
Cardigan
Lightweight jacket (I still havent found this should I buy it here or just buy it over in the uk) (im thinking of something like a thin fabric pea coat?)
Ballet flats / boots

Sweater
Shorts (workwear fabric)
Tights
Lightweight jacket
Ballet flats

Answer
That should be fine, but then again, it depends on what you're used to. Have a google around for what the temperature usually is in Manchester or Glasgow at the time of year you plan to come, think how that compares with home and see what you think. I wouldn't advise shorts unless it turns out to be an unusually warm day. I'm male, live in London and very rarely get to wear mine, though I always did as a kid because it was part of the school uniform up to the age of 11 (older people feel the cold more!)

The other thing is that UK weather can be incredibly variable, which is one reason the English famously talk about the weather. I've long since given up taking notice of weather forecasts. Expect rain at any time, though it doesn't rain ALL the time - that really is a myth. A cheap plastic raincoat with a hood that you can fold up small and carry in your bag just in case is no bad idea. A cardigan or sweater with something underneath is good because if it suddenly gets warmer and you feel hot and sweaty (that's another thing: because the UK is an island nation, there's always damp in the air and what can feel nicely hot in another country can be an uncomfortable mugginess here) you can take it off.

Perhaps it's a bit much for a guy to advise a girl on what to wear, but I DO live here and know what it can be like, and I hope it helps.

I need a bike for the city. What should I get?

seanstshib

I need something that's not flashy (it will be used in Glasgow where thieves like anything). My journey is uphill, but quite short. I would use it 2/3 times a day, 6 days out of 7 probably. So yeah durability.
I also dunno whether I should invest in disc brakes or not - Glasgow is quite a wet place so I dunno if that would help for an answer.
Err I was considering a fold-able bike for the thievery reason as well, but also so that I could keep it out of the night.
I have up to £600 to spend I suppose.
The fold-able thing is also good cos I take the train back to Edinburgh, my real home, quite often.
Another point is that I carry quite a bit of stuff when I cycle (ie a heavy guitar in a flight case on my back, books etc for uni in a man-bag around my front).
I would like it to last me.

Cheers.

Answer
Get the best bang for your buck. I strong frame and you can always upgrade later is the mentality to go with. If thieves are around make sure to convert all the quick release parts with actual bolts the retailers will sell or give to you in trade. This goes for seat posts, and both wheels. Disc brakes are not a must but stay true longer than old school. Get a front and rear removable light set, so not one takes it off the bike when you're not around too. If you want to keep quick release on the bike wheels make sure to get used to locking the bike by the back tire, through the frame and removing the front tire and locking it with the back one and frame. Put a pannier on the back to place a crate on any milk crate and bungies will do the trick, this will take the weight off of your back and legs (which will save you energy) while transporting your books and stuff.
As far as what type of bike, a city crossover/hybrid (mt.bike mixed with road) with a few gears I would go with, make sure it has tires that are not too slick so you can have traction in case you have to go off the usual path. I prefer a mild front fork suspension too, just to be safe, from potholes, drop-offs, curbs and other road hazards. BUY A LOCK WITH A BRAND NAME YOU CAN TRUST TOO! KRYPTONITE IS THE BEST I THINK. Good luck and remember one more bike on the road means one less car:)

I've posted this before, but I deleted it by accident. Here's an extract of my story, honest feedback please. I'm 13 years old.

There are things that I will miss about our damp flat in Glasgow.
I'll miss when the electricity went off and we had to huddle together on the sofa, shivering under a moth-eaten blanket that Dad tugged out of the hall cupboard. I'll miss my cosy pink bedroom, with the squeaky floorboards and the window looking out onto Clyde Park. I'll miss the smell of sweet scented candles, apple and blueberry and orange and cherry. I'll miss winter, when me and Dad sipped lukewarm hot chocolate speckled with fluffy pink marshmallows, and talked and talked and talked. I'd moan about Amy McWinter and Miss Elberry and homework and tests. Dad would moan about the rent and the landlord and the envelopes that were pushed through the letterbox every morning, filled with rows of black printed numbers.
There are also a lot of things that I won't miss.
Like the batty old man who lived downstairs, and always used to bang on our door and shout that we were playing music too loudly, at 2 o' clock in the morning when we were fast asleep. I won't miss Clyde High School... or Amy McWinter.
Every class has a popular girl, right? Well Amy was probably the most popular person in the whole school. Even the teachers simpered over her. She had glossy blonde hair, with a neatly trimmed block fringe. The kind I'd always wanted to have, shiny and neat. She was effortlessly pretty, with big blue eyes and long eyelashes and pale white skin. She never got a spot or a pimple or any blemish at all. Amy McWinter reminded me of a perfect Barbie doll.
She wasn't pretty inside, though. She was horrid horrid horrid.
I didn't get good marks, simply because of her. I was at the very bottom of the class. She prodded her sharp plastic ruler right into my back, she'd kick my chair so I couldn't concentrate, she'd mumble cruel words into my back. She'd pick on me in the playground too, laughing at my shoes, my bag, my second-hand school uniform, my haircut.
That's why I pushed her.
Amy was saying stuff about my mum. Horrible stuff, that made my cheeks burn and my eyes prickle with tears. She was standing at the top of the staircase, the big one that spiralled round and round and round, like one of those big green slides you get a fairground.
'No wonder she killed herself,' Amy hissed, her eyes shining. 'Having you for a daughter.'
'She didn't kill herself,' I said uncertainly, not quite believing it
myself. 'She left. She ran away. She'll still alive somewhere, probably living it up in a fabulous lifestyle as an actress, with a great big mansion
and...'
'We all know you're a little liar,' Amy snorted. 'A mansion! Yeah, right. If she's alive, which I doubt, she's probably sleeping in a doorway somewhere, begging for spare change.'
'She was a writer,' I lied, having one last attempt. 'So she'll probably be in a caravan, somewhere, because she told me she has to travel a lot. A really nice one, with a double bedroom and a bathroom and a living room and a...'
'Double bedroom?' Amy demanded. 'Why would she need that? It isn't like she's asked you to stay with her, sleep for a night. Is it?'
'She doesn't know our address. We've moved heaps and heaps of times. We've travelled all around the world, in fact,' I said lightly, shrugging slightly. 'She probably thinks about me every day, longs to see me, but can't because she...'
'That's rubbish,' Amy suddenly cries, taking a step towards me. I flinched, even though I knew she wouldn't actually physically hurt me. I could beat her in a fight, easy. I was small and skinny but I certainly knew how to punch and kick.
Amy continued, her words sharper than any hit she could give me. 'You live in that minging council flat, near the Kiosk, with mould on the windows and those big leafy vines climbing up the bricks. You've lived there since you were a baby, since she left. Of course she knows your address! She just can't be bothered. Doesn't want you, obviously. But who would? Not me, not anyone. Especially not her...'
It was then when I lost it.
She was on the top staircase, her fingers resting loosely on the banister. It only took one sharp push to get her flying down the stairs, shrieking and screaming, landing with a bump on the polished marble floor.
I looked down at her, sprawled across the floor, missing one Rocket Dog pump, her golden hair webbed across her face. One hand was outstretched, her fingers clenched into a fist. I waited for her to get up, to yell, to get me in trouble. But she didn't. She remained still, her face pale, her eyes closed, as if she was in a peaceful sleep.
I screamed.

--
THIS
Thanks to the people who said it was good (: x

& yeah, I suppose the floor wouldn't be marble. I don't really know why I put that. I'll changed it to "the polished wooden floorboards".
to the person that sent me a link to buy a barbie doll... WHAT?!

& to the person that said they didn't see the main character's name being mentioned... it wasn't. It's mentioned first thing in the second chapter though. It's Cherry.

Answer
wow, for 13 this is pretty dam good. I couldn't write like this at 13.

Anyway, onto the feedback. I agree with Shadow and Britt. There are a few grammar errors and I think (like me! lol) that you like to over use commas. Don't worry about it though. Just re-read what you've got and i'm sure you'll pick up when to take away a few commas. Just read it out loud and you'll see them =)
Also, the beginning seems to go for a bit too long? It doesn't really add a whole heap to the story. Maybe you could shorten it down and what you don't use, add in to the next scene or something.

I gotta say, I hate that Amy McWinter girl. She's so mean >< !! Oh and speaking of, skimming back over this I don't remember the Main Character's name being mentioned. Or maybe I just didn't skim hard enough lol

My last little thing I gotta say is get rid of the I screamed bit, or add a bit more into it.
She remained still, her face pale, her eyes closed, as if she was in a peaceful sleep. I couldn't help the scream that forced its way out.

Hmm, that was longer than what I thought it would be haha. But don't think that this is bad at all. I really liked it. Keep up the awesome work =)

Is she a FRIEND or just using me?

Savannah B

I have this friend, and we have been quite close the past year or so we've known each other,i mean,we do Everything together, but I seem to always do stuff for her,and she never does anything for me,so,this week,we have been staying at each others like, swapping back and forth, but she keeps saying some really insulting things, for instance,I'll describe today

"She phoned me up at 7.30 and says,do you want to go out,and i says, can i phone you back,im just awake, and she kind of went in a huff,so anyway,we got to glasgow about 2.00 to get our school stuff,so,we were goin in an out of shops and stuff, and abbout 3.30 we went for lunch, and i had bought my subway(six inch roll, medium drink, and saved my cookie for on he way home)she picked up my roll and i said, what are you doing?and she says,oh,i just want to try it,and i said ok on you go,and she ate half of it(after eating her lunch the exact same as what i had ordered)so it kind of annoyed me because i hadnt eaten, but anyway,i had almost everything for school i needed and then she told me she didnt have ANYTHING(we'd been shoppin for over an hour and a half!)so,we went into various shops and i helped her pick out what she needed, then she said at 6.00,i dont like any of this, took it all back and started again(sooo embarassing)so the place shut at 6.30,and we were on the train, and i had to use the bathroom(yes lol,a toilet on a train, eeeew),i came back and was hungry,so i reached into my bag for my cookie, and there was only half there, and she says,oh,i was kinda hungry,so i just took half your cookie, but oh well, thats was today??

so,i have been stayin at hers this week, and i made dinner for her and her family,i tidied her room and her house,i walked her dog and so on,but then sitting in my house,my niece(1 an 1/2) and two of my sisters were in and she says"your niece is crazy i couldnt live with 'THAT' " and then my brother came in,an they were havin a couple of drinks and she sayss, your family is soo loud,i couldnt live with them(infront of them).then we were walking down to the shops and she phoned her dad to come and get her and just left me walking to the shops on my own(10.00 at night :( )she didnt even say bye :(

My sisters and my mum says that i shouldnt hang about with her because she's just walking over the top of me and using me,but,i ont know if i can,i dont want to just say "im not your friend blah blah blah..."because i dont want to upset her,so, how can i tell the way i feel, without having to not be friends(stupid way of putting it)and what would you do,do you think she's worth the worry and upset???(because it is upsetting me)

answers are very appreciated(honest ones that is) xxxxxx

Answer
Unfortunatley there are givers and takers in this world, and the givers tend to get walked all over and dont stop getting walked over until youve finally had enough but you cant help it because its in you. (im the same and I never learn by my mistakes even though i say i will change next time but because its in me to help and give I cant stop it and always go back giving. But if i ever need help, I cant even ask for it but even if they know i need some help with something nobody offers and then i get upset and feel totally used, because I dont wait to be asked to help people, I just offer beforehand.) But you do need to be honest with her and tell her because it will carry on and youll end up exploding and probably falling out altogether.

I think you need to say to her that you have been seeing alot of each other lately and feel that you value her friendship very much but you feel that she is taking advantage of you and now its upsetting you and its come to the stage that you feel you need to say something. Then give her some examples of what she is doing and see what she says.

Its hard but in my experience as soon as i start saying no and not giving in, usually they dont want to know anymore and then that makes me feel even more used. So try to start as you mean to go on when making friends because it can make you feel really down, im in my 30's and I finally put my foot down with a friend last week and I havent heard from her since and im now at the stage where i actually dont want any more friends because they always seem to let you down, one way or another however I know its partly my fault for not being stronger, but myself and my husband are the same. (i guess thats one reason why i love him so much).

Good luck, I hope she takes what you say - you need to say it because it will only carry on and then i hopes she starts thinking about you more.

I like tur

When I was young I was very close to my mother (who had no other family) but she died when I was ten and my dad remarried and she was horrible, she changed everything and she brought her family to live with us, her horrible son who used to bully me and her annoying brats that used to harrass me all the time, they got rid of all my mother's old things and redecorated the house and kept forcing me to be with them and share my cat with them, even though they never let me touch their dog, my Dad never did anything and even let his wife force me into the box room so her older son could have a big room and she encouraged her kids to be horrible to me and my Dad kept yelling at me for telling her she was not related to me and refusing to call her mum and he got rid of my cat because I would not let the others play with him in the end when I turned 16 I emptied my bank account, packed a small bag of things that were really important to me, and I got a train and left Glasgow in Scotland, in the end I found a home in Shrewsbury in England, I changed my name, opened a new bank account, got hold of my birth certificate and took my father's name of it and changed my mothers last name so it matched my new one and I found a studio apartment in a building that has lots of studio apartment which are rented by students and men who have just left home, I get mine rent free because every night at 7PM I cook dinner for me and the land lady.

Since I abandoned them my life became great, my ackne cleared up, I got taller and stronger, my temper improved dramatically and I have become much more popular and I am content with my life, I have a girlfriend and lots of school friends because I won a scholarship into this private school so I still get a good education and I am getting the best grades in my school and they are putting me through to attend Oxford University.

Also my apartment is absolutely perfect, the floors are polished and I painted the walls which are flawless and my furniture is fantastic, their is no mess or bad smell from the bathroom, and the cupboards and draws are perfectly organized, all my books and films are in the best condition and they are categorized and in alphabetical order.

School life is great, I have done DofE and I am part of 5 lunch time clubs and 5 after school clubs (one for each day of the week) and then I have a job playing a piano in a restaurant and they all love me there, they also love me at the Gym I go to after my job, I get home at 8PM when I cook dinner for the landlady and eat with her, she loves me like everyone else in the building and then I get to go home to my amazing apartment where I finish my homework and then I can put on some music or watch a funny film and I read my books and have me time, then I can go to bed before waking up, going for a run and getting ready for school, on Saturdays I volunteer at the animal shelter for a few hours, then meet up with friends for a while then at night I eat out for dinner before going to the cinema and I come home to my great apartment and do as I like, on Sunday I go to church and then I have a drink with some of the guys in the building and I just relax and engage in my many hobbies, I also have a great computer now and better clothes than I did and my life is fantastic, but apart from the land lady nobody knows about my past.

But my Dad visited me last week and told me I was to pack a bag and come home with him, I yelled at him that I loved my life here and I was not going to abandon everything I have going for me to live with people I hate, he was very angry about me changing my name and only having pictures of my mother, he said I was living a very selfish life and that I was immuture for leaving, I told him about school and my girlfriend and the high chance I will be going to Oxford and he said that he did not care and I am going back with him and I am to say sorry to the step family, I told him if he wants any relationship with me he is going to work around my life not his, he then told me he never liked me anyway and that his step son was a better son than I was and then he insulted my mother and I just flipped out and pushed him out of my door yelling at him, the guy who lives in the apartment next to me came out and asked what was wrong and I told him the situation and he and a few other guys that lived there pushed him out for me and told him that he did not deserve such a great guy for a son, but my dad did say that he was going to take me home whether I liked it or not and he would do it within the law before he stormed off, last I heared he took a plane back to Scotland.

But what rights does he have, I am 17 and he spent a year not bothering with me and now he wants me back, I am a legal adult but does he have any power over me still, he is not even on my birth certificate anymore and I have spent over a year living alone.

What can I do?

"Are we there yet?" I know I'm a little old to ask stupid questions, but I feel as if it's my duty. I'm sandwiched in the back seat of the car between my ten year old sister Rose and a box filled with her cuddly toys. All I can see out of the window is grass.
"I'm so bored!" Rose moaned. "We've been driving for hours!" In the front seat I could see mum sigh and sink down in her seat. It's a long drive to our new house.
"Look, we're going through the Lake District. It's beautiful." Mum loves everything to do with nature. I think it's a waste of time. She's a police officer, she answers the nine-nine-nine calls.
"Beautifully boring." That was my contribution. I could see dad's head start to change colour. He's bald, and his head turns red when he's getting angry. It's like his own little warning light.
"Be. Quiet. Now." Ok, dad can be pretty scary when he gets annoyed.
Our new house is in Glasgow, we're moving because dad has got a job teaching at the University, and we all have to go along with him. I've not been to see the house yet, but mum and dad have. They say it's massive and Victorian. In my head I imagine it to be a huge gothic castle, with bats in the turrets, and vampires in the basement. Wasn't that the Victorian style? I told Rose about what I thought our new house would be like, and mum and dad told me off. They say that I have an overactive imagination; whatever that means.
"Mum, is our new house haunted?" I love making up ghost stories, but I don't want to meet a real ghost. I'm scared of ghosts and zombies and stuff like that. At my old school all the boys were mean to me, they'd sneak up behind me when I was daydreaming and say things like "Whoooh it's the ghost." That doesn't seem scary, but I'm easily scared. Everybody else seemed to find it funny.
"Of course not Lizzie, it's not that old. Don't be a baby." Even if I ask quite a reasonable question, I'm still treated like an idiot. I can see my reflection in the mirror. My short brown hair is all messed up - I couldn't find my hairbrush this morning before we set off - and my eyes have huge bags under them. I look younger than eleven.
We've just passed a sign welcoming us to Scotland. Mum says that it'll only be an hour or so until we're at the house. At the moment we're driving along a country lane, and it's getting late.
"Can we stop for dinner or something? I'm starving!" I don't want to complain, but I really am hungry. I didn't eat much at lunchtime, but now I've got my appetite back.
"We only had lunch.." Mum looked at her watch "five hours ago. Maybe we should stop for dinner." She looked over at dad, who nodded his head. "I'll stop at the next place we see, I could do with a big meal." Dad is really clever, he has a PHD in Biology, or something like that. I don't get it but everyone says it's a really big deal so I guess it is.
"Oh look, coming up on the left, it looks like a bed and breakfast. We might be able to get a meal there."
"We may as well try." I'm brightening up a bit at the thought of some nice homemade food. We pulled into the driveway and I looked up. It was just like my imaginary gothic mansion, with stained glass windows and turrets. But this wasn't just in my imagination. In the dark it looked sinister, with trees reaching out their angry fingers towards us. The front door of the house banged open, and the figure in the doorway called out. Her voice barely audiable above the wind.
"Come on in dears, don't be afraid. I'll get you a nice hot meal."

Your impression of a girl in designer?

So, in my school, they allow you to buy you a simple, plain bag if you don't want to buy the normal school bags sold at the school. I have my eye on two nice Juicy Couture bags and want to use one of them for school. What would you think of me if I turned up on the first day of school with one of these bags?

Also, if you invite someone shopping and the person you invited comes in nice looking clothes (but not branded) and with a different designer bag or wallet, what would you think of her? Or I guess I could just me :)

The only reason I ask, is that I don't want to put anyone off or make people think that I think I'm too good for them. I'm especially looking for opinions from teens in Australia, since it's where my school is and most of my time spent in Australia was during primary school so I don't really have a teen perspective of these things. Of course, opinions from other countries would also be appreciated :)

Answer
There were girls at my school who wore the best of everything, and they were always the more popular. I'm from Glasgow, Scotland though. The only thing I can add though - who is buying your designer bag for you? When I see girls in their teens now with designer clothes on, I automatically think their spoilt brats. There is no way a young teenage girl still at school can afford to buy these labels, so their parents do. Sorry that's just my opinion.

I screamed.

It's Cherry.

wow, for 13 this is pretty dam good.
