Answer
1. In Bangalore, India, rag pickers are encouraged to collect littered plastic carry bags and other plastics, and school children are also asked to bring daily as many plastic waste, hand them over at a centralised place. These plastics are carried by a firm which recycles it by melting and adding it to bitumen for tarring/asphalting the roads. Such roads have proved to last longer. This way world can recycle plastic waste and use it for some good purpose.
2. In many countries where coconut plantations exist, many coconut trees fall or cut and some such trees are used for roofing purpose. But many will be lying and take lot of time to disintegrate. I have planned and recycled such stems of coconut trees for (a) creating flower pots for planting flower plants/ shrubs etc. This is how it is done: get the fallen trees cut into 3 feet pieces, remove one and half feet of pith, by retaining one inch of the outer hard cover, make a few holes at the bottom of the dug portion, put some sand and over that fill it with mixture of red soil and kitchen manure. Plant small flowering plants, shrubs, ornamental plants, watch them grow without much watering. Place these tall pots in your drive way or balcony. (b) cut the tall trees into one foot pieces, cover the top with shreds of old cloths for cushion, cover the top with thick plastic and nail it to the sides. They become nice stools for kids to sit, (c) similarly, place two one and half feet pieces apart, take a piece of old thick plywood, nail it to the two pieces, it becomes a mini dining table for kids, (d) cut the tall tree into pieces of 4/5 feet, remove one foot of pith, on the one side, make 6 inches hole, place a thick plastic plate in a slanted way on top, place a brick on top of it, let it stand in your garden and watch how birds come and nest in your garden. Tie a plastic cup near the mouth of the hole and fill it with fresh water daily.
These simple recycling ideas can be done for other fallen trees also with a little more effort. If U need further details, mail to: vkumar_m@yahoo.com
