I know there's ground school and I heard around 70 hours of flying. Can you tell me how much all this would cost for a small airplane like a Cessna 150?

Answer
The cost depends HEAVILY on the time you actually take to finish and the hourly costs for the aircraft and instructor. A Cessna 152 can rent from $59/hr at a flying club to over $70/hr at a pricey flight school.

Get C152 rental rates near you here- http://www.private2atp.com/ft_finder.php

An example cost break down if your training was completed in the FAA MINIMUM required time (40 hours not 44) with some averaged rental rates:

* Third Class Medical $65
* 40 hours C172 rental @ $62/hr = $2,480
* 30 hours Flight Instruction @ $30/hr = $900
* Misc pilot supplies (see list) $300
* FAA Computerized Written Exam Fee $70
* Examiner fee $250

A student that finishes their training closer to the national average of 65 hours flight time will pay approximately

* Third Class Medical $65
* 65 hours C172 rental @ $62/hr = $4,030
* 55 hours Flight Instruction @ $30/hr = $1,650
* Misc pilot supplies $300
* FAA Computerized Written Exam Fee $70
* Examiner fee $250

Many schools advertise a price for the PPL, but that only cover the 40 hour student. If they go over that, then it costs more. Some areas of the country or certain airport have very pricey rental rates. Shop around before you commit. Check into any flying clubs in your area as they are often less expensive as they have no staff or overhead to pay for.

Figure costs with your rental rates here- http://www.firstflight.com/features/cost...

Example supplies needed:
Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual $72
"FAR/AIM" book (regulations & operating rules) $19
Pilot logbook $13
Navigation Plotter $11
An "E6B" Flight Computer $13
Sectional Chart $8
PPL Written Test Study Guide $18
PPL Oral Exam Guide $22
PPL Practical Test Standards Book $6
... and a Flight Bag to hold it all!

Healthful cooking on a student budget?

Love 'n Jo

I've recently returned to school from working (and poured my savings into avoiding excess loans.) I'm looking to maintain a healthy diet of vegetables, whole grains and low meat on a tight budget. Do you have recipe suggestions/website suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
Watch the sales. Find the markets that have mark downs and learn when they mark the food down. (Some do the marking down in the morning, some evening, etc) Build your menu around the sale priced and marked down foods.

Avoid boxed mix foods like Hamburger Helper. Generally you can buy the ingredients and make the stuff from scratch more cheaply and more nutritiously.

When you shop sales be sure to check the sizes and prices. Sometimes what looks like a good buy really isn't. For instance my daughter-in-law loved going to one of the dollar stores. She finally talked me into going and I found that many of thier items were over priced at a dollar. Canned beets for a dollar when you can get a good name brand at about any grocery for.89, a package of lunch meat for a dollar but it is a 4 ounce package which makes the meat $4 a pound, you can buy boneless skinless chicken breast for $4 a pound any day and good ground beef for $3. And you can buy most lunchmeats at about any grocery for $4. No bargain.

Laundry soaps and paper products is another place you get caught. The large sizes often cost more per roll or ounce than the smaller.

Don't be afraid to stock up on something you use a lot when it is on sale. Check expiration dates. Say you use a lot of canned spinach. If you normally pay $1 a can and this week it is on sale 2 for one try to buy enough to last you till the next sale or at least a month or so.

Invest in freezer bags and freezer containers. When you make too much freeze it and eat it in a couple days. Or next week when you have to study and won't have time to cook.

I know it sounds confusing but it will not take you long to get the hang of it and it will be skill taht will serve you well your entire life. By skillful shopping a family of four can save a cou0ple hundred dollars on thier food bill each month and still eat great meals that are low in fat, low in carbs and nutritious.

Two more points. Just abut every grocery has what they call loose leaders every week. The itmes that are on a really good sale. They use them to pull people in because most people while shopping for the loose leaders will buy all the other groceries they need. Check the newspaper ads, go to the groceries in your area and just purchase the loose leaders you need.

And althought you often hear you should make a list of groceries you need and just buy items on the list if you really want to save food money forget that piece of advice. If you have made out your weekly menu and plan to have chicken breast but the chichen breast is $4.00 a pound and good lean pork tenderloin is on sale for 2.29 well you have hurt your food budget if you stick to your menu and buy the chicken breast.

Good shopping practices really mean more to a food budget than menu.

Good luck!
