Use of backpacks/school bags in history?

Does anyone know the history of bookbags? By that I mean what type of bags were used by kids going to school in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, etc, up to modern bookbags. Pictures/links?

The school satchel was popular in Britain, although most High school kids would have a briefcase like Dad's. My satchel had straps to carry on my back rather than slung over my shoulders. It was very awkward especially when wearing a damp gabardine overcoat.

Messenger bag/ satchel for school?

I am looking for a satchel/messenger bag for school. I would like for it to be strong and for me to be able to buy it at a store at a mall instead of ordering it online.

For a neutral coloured messenger bag, try nordstrom, martin + osa, urban outfitters, j crew, guess, oakley, or even some vintage resale shops :)

you can fit a school notebook into these, but it really can harm the bag. and the notebook might have to be folded.. is it really that hard to just carry a notebook. -.-

Stylish school bags.?

Hi so school starts in august and I need a new bag for my books and stuff. I don't want a plain old backpack I want something stylish haha. I can't find any that I like so I need peoples opinions. I want something that goes a cross the body. Like a cross body satchel or something like that. Also it need to be big enough to hold a note book, binder, book, ect. all for under 50$.

How should I decorate my school bag?

Got a new school bag, a plain army style satchel. I was wondering how I should decorate it for school?

I really want to reflect my style on it. I've searched it up on google, but they all suggest is drawing all over it, gluing glitter and piper cleaners to it. Frankly, that sounds awful.

Im a big fan of doctor who, Sherlock, Harry potter, and lord of the rings. And I want to incorporate this in my design. I've already stuck some badges to it, but it doesn't seem enough.

I was searching for iron on or sew on patches of the TARDIS, 221B, the one ring and all that. But I cant find any!

I had an idea, one I really wanted to do. I was planning to make a dangly charm thing for my zip. Including metal charms of my fave fandoms. If you know anywhere that sells metal TARDIS charms, 221B, deathly gallows signs etc. please tell me!

I'm the same age and year as you. For affordable bags I would check out New Look, Primark, H&M and TKMaxx. If you want a better quality bag that would last you pretty much the whole year I would recommend Topshop, River Island and Monsoon/Accesorize (where I got my bag from). These shops are pricier but are worth it.
