Who is New Zealand musician John Hanlon that did the song Lovely Lady?

Kevin7

Answer
John Hanlon (1949- ) is a New Zealand singer and songwriter and is not to be confused with John Hanlon the record producer, recording engineer and mix engineer residing in California USA who works primarily with Neil Young.

He was born in Malaya and lived in New Zealand since the 1960s. In 1978 he moved to Australia where he has been since, running an advertising agency.

The single "Lovely Lady" was released in 1974 and reached #1 in New Zealand.

John Hanlon was born in Malaya in 1949 to Chinese-European parents. He was raised in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, before going to boarding school in Australia, and eventually settling in Auckland with his parents in the early sixties.

John was self-taught at playing the guitar and, by the age of twenty, had developed an enormous collection of lyrics and tunes, which he wrote in many exercise books. On night in 1971 he opened his songbook and played some of his tunes to a few enthusiastic supporters at a party. Bruce Barton, of Mascot Studios, heard him and was impressed enough to record a large number of items from his songbook.

Bruce then took these songs and managed to get John a recording contract on the Family Label. He was teamed up with arranger and keyboard player, Mike Harvey. The first single was released in late 1972 called "Old Fashioned music"/"Mickey Mouse House". This was closely followed in 1973 with his first album called "Floating".

In 1973, along with Mike Harvey, John wrote a song called "Knowing". The song was entered into the Studio One Television contest, and, sung by Steve Gilpin, it took third place.

The next single was a turning point in John's career. He was always ecology conscious and wrote a song for the conservation movement during the Manapouri Hydro Dam controversy. It was called "Damn The Dam" and was sponsored by AHI. After being broadcast on radio and television, it was considered popular enough to be released commercially. When released in 1973, "Damn The Dam"/"When Will I Write This Song" reached number 5 on the National charts. Later that year, John was awarded with a RATA award for Single of the Year, with "Damn The Dam".

John's own version of "Knowing" was released as a single, with "Flight Of The Seagull" on the reverse, along with another single in 1973 called "Shy Ann"/"In Love Out Of Love". In 1974 his second album "Garden Fresh" was released. From this came the next single "I Care"/"Blue Shoes". "I Care" was specially written for an NZBC ecology promotion, but failed to sell.

The mid 1974 release of the next single "Is It Natural"/"I'd Rather Be A Bird" caused all sorts of controversy. "Is It Natural" contained the lyric "randy schoolboy" and the NZBC considered this to be offensive and promptly banned the single. It was a good song and one of the prerequisites for being eligible for a RATA award was that a song had to have been broadcast by the NZBC. The record company became worried and asked John to re-record the song, replacing the offending passage with "risky" instead of "randy". John refused and met with one of the private radio stations in Auckland, Radio Hauraki, who were playing the single and told them of the situation. Radio Hauraki jumped at the opportunity to bag the NZBC and this forced them to reconsider their decision. Before long they were broadcasting the song in its uncensored form. The song went on to collect a RATA award for "Best Recorded Composition".

John wrote "Lovely Lady" by himself for his entry into the 1974 Studio One Contest and sang it himself. He placed second in the contest, but the song when released with "A Minor Occurrence" on the reverse, became John's most successful single of his career. The song reached number one on the National Charts, stayed around for an incredible twenty weeks, and was awarded the APRA Silver Scroll for 1974.

1975 saw the release of the album "Higher Trails". The album was recorded at Eldred Stebbing's new 16-track studio at Herne Bay. From it came three singles, "April Wine"/"Platform No 9 (and Sequel)", "Higher Trails"/"Why Wasn't It Me" and "Dog Talk Crazy Woman". On the charts, "April Wine" made it to number 6, while "Higher Trails" got to 35. The album itself picked up four RATA Awards, including "Album Of The Year".

Also, im going to school as a sophomore, so please, can i have any tips on what should i wear? or what bag should i get? what clubs to join? or what should i do to prevent myself from having a bad time for highschool . thank you :D
also , im 15 and im a guy .

Answer
Be yourself! Don't try to be a clone of all the other kids. After the first day, you'll see what the others are wearing and then you can dress in a similar style, but still maintain your individuality.

Relax and be friendly - the second day will be better!

Schools in Korea questions?

Seung Gi

These are my questions:

1. I am not Korean and I am planning to study in Korea, is it hard to adjust?
2. Is that true that private schools in Korea are strict and most of the students stay at school until 11 PM?
3. I am 14 years old and turning 15 on October, what grade will I be in?
4. How many subjects do schools in Korea have and what are they?
5. Do schools in Korea have education about religions? I am Born-Again Christian.
6. When do school year start and end? June until March or August/September until May/June?
7. If Korea is known to be good in Science, Math and Reading, why most of the Koreans prefer to study in the Philippines? I've seen A LOT back then in the PH. Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!

And lastly.... Do you think I should pursue the plan of studying in Korea instead of studying in USA?

Please answer my questions.
PS: I don't know how to speak Korean! I don't understand Hangul, too. I am Filipino-Chinese. I am fluent in Filipino and English.

Answer
I don't want to sound discouraging or anything, but all I'll say will be the truth.

1. It will be possibly the hardest thing you will ever do. People complain about some material that is hard at school already, now try learning it in a language that is in no way similar to yours. A dictionary will have to follow you everywhere you go and scientific terms, higher level vocab will usually not show up. Concepts and formulas will also have to be understood in a language you do not speak. Try learning calculus (diffrential and integral), biology, organic chemistry, etc in a language you confess you do not know (watching some TV will not be enough...)

2. Korean students will go to ordinary school (typically around 7) to around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. They will go to various private academies (hagwons) afterwards, so you will be out of the house until around midnight. Kids often leave their house in the morning with breakfast in their mouth and lunch+dinner in their bags. Since you are paying to go to the private academies, you will be pressured from home to do well. Private schools are not very big in Korea, however private academies are and they are everywhere.

3. You'd be in the 8th or 9th grade (remember you'd be adding another year to your life b/c the Korean age system is different). However, I'd highly advise you to drop down a grade or so b/c unless you are Einstein's successor, you will not pass. Korean students do this when they go to the States b/c they cannot manage a workload in a language they don't know even though it is easier material.

4. It would depend on the school. Math, English, Chinese, Science, Korean, and History would all be subjects in school.

5. Schools will typically not have classes about theology or religion. That will have to be done by you on your own time, but there may be exceptions.

6. The Korean education calendar is a bit different from what you might be used to. School would start in the summer until December where students will have a 2 month break (December and January). When they come back, they will go to school until July or June where they would have another month off. So there is a 2 month winter break and a 1 month summer break in the school year from the summer until the summer. Exact months and days will vary.

7. Korea is known to be one the top countries in education by numerous international studies. Koreans do not move to Korea for math or science. They would typically study in the Philippines for the English education that is available there at a much lower cost. The warmer climate is also attractive and the Filipino government encourages immigrants from Korea for economic reasons.

8. If you know English fluently, then I highly advise you to study in the US. It will be much easier for you to do so. To be honest, you always hear from Korean immigrants talking about how much easier school in the States is compared to Korea. I have cousins that are three years younger than me and are in Korea who do subject material that is only a year behind me (I live in the States). The only time they're at home during school weeks are for sleep except for maybe 2 or 3 hours. And this will be months on end. You will essentially be going to school on the weekends as well through the private academies (they will basically last just as long). Also, this will sound absurd, you will attend these private academies over the breaks as well. Of course, since these are private academies, it's completely up to you on whether to attend them or not, however I can nearly guarantee you that you'll fall behind if you don't.

Good luck to you and I'm sorry if I sounded excessively pessimisstic, but this is based on my own experience and from what I hear all the time. If you study in the US for highschool, you may be able to attend a semester or two of college in Korea; however, with what you've told me so far, it will be very difficult for you to succeed in school in Korea (unless you are a frickin genius of course :P)

Is Auckland really as bad as they say?

Sarah

I was planning to take a trip (just me) to Auckland in November, but then i got to reading the site below, and I honestly don't want to go anymore because it sounds so unsafe. Is Auckland really that violent and dangerous of a place to be?

http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Australia_and_Oceania/New_Zealand/North_Island/Auckland_Region/Auckland-1884091/Warnings_or_Dangers-Auckland-TG-C-1.html#page=1&tgCount=0&themes=0

Answer
Firstly, the first answerer, John, is a notorious troll who for some unknown reason, has something against New Zealand and constantly posts negative answers about New Zealand in this section. His answers aren't trustworthy or credible. He's just a troll.

If you want proof:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130109025658AApRUtB

(the hidden answer at the bottom)

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120611125917AAnUl5D

(the "best" answer at the top)

Anyway, onto your question - The site you visited is a travel site which has a section for each city listed, dealing with "dangers or warnings." You can enter "Sydney", "London" or "Thailand" or "Queenstown" into the destination search bar and click on the "Dangers or Warning" link for any of those cities and OF COURSE you're going to see a bunch of negative posts written by people from their own personal experiences. It's the case for any city on that site.

One person even describes Queesntown as New Zealand's most dangerous city in the "Dangers and Warnings" section of Queenstown's page.

Any city you research using the "Dangers and Warnings" feature of that site is going to look bad for various different reasons.

As for the specific things people are saying on that site about Auckland, I don't agree with anything written there except for the comments about Aucklanders being poor drivers. The driving here is pretty shocking.

As for the gangs and the mentions of American gangs like "Bloods" and "Crips" as referenced by the colours red and blue, I've never heard about or experienced anything relating to such gangs.

I've lived in Auckland for more than 20 years and aside from once having my wallet taken from a bag I left sitting in a different room while at high school, I've never even had anything stolen.

I've never been assaulted or abused in the street by "thugs."

Based on my personal experience, the things mentioned on that site aren't even true.

Auckland is safer than most big cities. But of course bad things happen here like they do everywhere. So just be as vigilant as you would be in any other city. Use your common sense and you'll be fine.

Edit:

Lol @Hatmanone's answer.

Oh yeah, maybe I should mention that Auckland is a pretty expensive city. Not nearly as expensive as Paris and Rome and places like that, but yeah, it's pretty expensive.

where can i buy these IN NEW ZEALAND auckland?

Answer
Dude, you are asking for to much xD

I live in Auckland too :D We should go shopping! hahaha

First of all, go to hottopics website because you can get everything you listed there.. pretty much.

Gloomy Bear, Domo, Skelanimals stuff can all be found at JayJays.

Lime Green Skinny Jeans - JayJays. Or online because JayJays doesn't always have them instock.

Chucks and Vans can be found at the obvious places where we buy shoes -.- You're not that stupid!

Make up can be bought at the pharmacy..

JayJays has black skinnies for sure. All year round I'd say.

Hot Topic. That's the place to get those sorts of bags.

Teenage depression? Please help..?

SP123

Hello,I am a sixteen year old Syrian teenager. Before I go into the "what's wrong with me/help me part of this,I'd like to give you a little backstory of my life.

I was born in Syria to a Syrian Mother and Iraqi Father. When I was three years old,I moved to Dubai. After living there for over a year,my father decided to take us to California. We ended up staying there for seven years, and, once I turned 10 we moved back to Syria to be closer to family. Syria was great,Damascus was great. Around March 2011 the civil war brok out, however my family had decided to stay in the country regardless for the problems weren't as bad in the capital. We carried on living there for over a year and a half into the civil war. My father began fearing the safety of his family,so,like any sane parent would do,carried off and left to the States. But this time we went to Ohio instead.

Ohio was bland and we only stayed there for one year (last year) because my parents didn't enjoy it much, more notably my father fell into a major depression over what was going on in Syria as well as being so far away from home. Summer rolled along and we packed our bags.. Where too? Syria.

It was nice being able to see my family once again in Syria, but after three months one does get bored. Schools had begun in the U.S. and my father was once again lost on the infamous topic of where we were going to go next. So,my father landed on coming to Beirut,Lebanon to check out the situation for living as well as schools my siblings and I could be enrolled in.

I've been in Lebanon for a week now with my sister and father. My mother and younger sister are in Syria, should be coming soon though. And he still is confused as to where we are moving too. I personally really wanted to go back to California for my Education. I have stellar grades and determined to go to a prestigious higher learning institute. I myself have also fallen into a state of depression as to what my life has become of constantly moving and not knowing what's going to happen with my life. Are colleges going to look at me with disapproval when examining my rather bizarre lifestyle? I want to do what's best for my family and don't want them sacrificing their lives just for me. Schools have begun and I still don't know what's going to happen. Will my family move to Beirut? They are even in talks of just going back to Syria. My family really cares about me and tell me that they are sorry of the suffering but everyone suffers sometime in his life..
I am a U.S. citizen and an Iraqi citizen. Surprisingly,I do not have Syrian citizenship due to the fact that my father is not Syria, pretty odd, right?

Basically ever since I came back from the Emirates (went all over Dubai, Abu Dhabi), I've felt sick, depressed, can't eat, can't do anything all I wana do is go live there.

I can't explain how it is but it really does open up your eyes to another world and Im sat here right now reading blog after blog of expat (british) amazing experiences there.

I miss it. to put it short.

You come back to UK, you dont see bugattis and modified X6s parked outside the mall anymore. You dont see pink hummers, and ferraris and lambos parked outside many homes

You cant beep the horn outside a shop and the indian come running outside to ask you what you need

Nobody opens closes car door behind you and takes your things inside-- you go food shopping and kill your fingers just to get it inside the house- Ive resorted to actually taking them granny bags wit me to Morissons.

You dont get special treatment- over there because I wear abaya they think Im emaraty (my Bf is local and in national dress too because imm from near this region in the gulf originally but just lived in uK for studies)

Nobody asks you how many items you have when you go into shop- you try them on and leave the scruffed pile for the filipino to clear up

the foood is 7 Star here absolutely amazing hygenic and fast

10 lane motorways

Being greeted with Maam and Sir wherever you go

Government give uae nationals a villa when they get married or money to build one- so no mortgage for life etc

Safeeeetly-- we left our car (porshe cayeene) running outside the hotel forget t on- hotel staff park it and give us key in morning

Its really easy to skive work- sick note, send ur indian to sign for you- but they changed that now and they have finger print ahahah o sign in and out as many people abused the system

All cars are white n tinted (my favourite) and all 4 x 4 --no smaller than 4.5 litre (cheap petrol) no expensive insurance , stupid rules about seatbelt etc basically a policeman stopped us...then checked documents...my bf hadnt done his insurance for 2 years.....and wasnt wearing seatbelt...he laughed with the policeman saying "aww dont fine me on both-!! " then the police man said "ok choose one insurance or seatbelt"- he chose insurance because even though its more expensive (100 pound fine) it doesnt hav points of licence like with seatbelt---compared to in Uk it would be other way--? what does this say about this place??

I dont blame the British expats for going there- this countrys expat population is now 75% + and local population so little

Should I just marry him after we finish studies and live with him
Hes a real man, He loves me, Pays for everything and never lets me spend a penny (part of the culture too as he says if offendshis manhood when I try to pay before you call me a gold digger!!!)

O an being a housewife just means havin a maid, cook and really good social life. (chaffeur too if you dont wana drive) so NO. Women there are NOT oppressed.

No tax- starting salary 10 K a month for british degree + villa + pool +car and first flight tickets home twice a year included--! and if you have kids the pay half their school fees

No tax on anything- In uk you cant escae Tax even when you're dead- inheritance tax.!! and the people work for the government to pay them wages not the other way-!!the government doesnt care about its people sadly

you need to share your thoughts coz im NOT dreaming. Ive seen this world. And it IS the reason every1 is obsessed with this country right now.

btw- ive been twice this year and 3 times last

Answer
Dear,

I don't blame you for being just 21 years old and dreaming about One Thousand and One Night. It's a big difference being on vacation or working and living in the UAE. But let me start at the beginning.

1) I don't know about Dubai, but I've neither seen any pink Hummers in Abu Dhabi. 3 Bugattis belong to a rent a car company and there are only a very few Masaratis and Lambos.

2) Staying inside the car, beeping the horn an wait for an Indian come running, works in small convinient stores only and is a sign of disrespect and lazyness.

3) When living here, nobody beside your maid or husband will open or close your house door.

4) agreed

5) This is the behavior of a spoild child and in Boutiques you are mostly allowed 4 pieces max.

6) depends on where you dine

7) not in Abu Dhabi

8) agreed and it's annoing after a while

9) keep on dreaming. Not such things like marriage funds anymore.
Getting a villa? Get your name on the list and wait until first Govt. employees got one, then families with children (the more the better).

10) agreed

11) where did you get that from?

12) not true. Not all cars are white SUV's. (our cars are black, grey and blue). Tinted windows are allowed up to a certain extend only unless a woman obtained extra permission. Unvalid registration, no insurance and no seat belt - what does this tell you about this place? It tells you that many Emiratis still have to learn a lot. That's it.

13) agreed

14) you Have to get married to live with him.

15) oh Girl. In case you are married to an Emirati, have a maid, cook and driver, you will be bored to death as long as you don't have any children. Please be aware that your social life will be "ladies only". Having a maid for cleaning and help cooking - fine. But what do you need a cook for? Driver? Can't you cook and drive? You are right we are not oppressed, we can drive.

16) you are dreaming again. GBP 10K (assume you are not speaking about AED:))? Only when a western degree and YEARS OF EXPERIENCE! For sure NOT for people who just finished their studies. Same for villa, etc. Tickets back home? Not for an Emirati. Your kids will be Emiratis and public schools are for free.

Please don't take my inputs as an offense, you asked for sharing thoughts.
Many foreign girl wake up when realising that their Arab husband isn't exactly the same anymore he used to be aboard. In case your future husband is from a conservative Abu Dhabi family - you better think twice about your great social life. This doesn't have to be a problem, but it can. What do you think how many divorced foreign women live in Abu Dhabi?

Anyway, I wish you all the best. Some of your dreams may become true, but that may take time, patience, hard work and a good working marriage. Take care.

Moms only....what do you think about using a child backpack harness that has a strap for the parent to hold?

Q. This question is for moms. What do you think about the backpack harnesses you can put on your child with a strap for the parent to hold in their hand? I have a 2 year old who likes to walk and would dart away at any opportunity and doesn't like to hold my hand. We are going to an amusement park and I was wondering what people think of these.

Answer
I personally feel that a child on a harness is better than a child kidnapped or dead under a car wheel.

You are the only person who knows and can anticipate how your child is going to act, therefore you are the best person who can make that choice. The opinions of people on here do not matter, you are doing what you feel is best to keep your child safe. Good job!

Are backpack harnesses for children legal in Illinois?

r

I just read that backpack harnesses for children are illegal in some areas. I'm hoping to find out if there are any areas, specifically in Illinois, where they are illegal. However, if someone could provide a list of any places in the U.S. where they're illegal that would be very helpful to quell my curiosity. Thanks!

Answer
They are not illegal anywhere that I can find. There have been cases where a parent has done something with the harness, like drug their kid or tied then up, that was illegal. But not just having the harness on the kid

Need to find a specific song?

jonesysgrl

I am trying to find a song to use in an essay I"m writing for school. I want a song that has lyrics dealing with the subject of day-to-day life, and how everyone always just seems so stupid and clueless. (Yeah, it's horrible, but hey...it's the truth.) I looked for hours, and by simply searching by the music of bands I like, I found nothing but songs about love/breakups, etc. (I listen to bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, Paramore, blah, blah, blah. :D)

Answer
Lily Allen has a lot of great songs.

her songs LND and Everything's Just Wonderful.

LND:
Riding through the city on my bike all day
Cause the filth took away my licence
It doesn't get me down and I feel ok
Cause the sights that I'm seeing are priceless

Everything seems to look as it should
But I wonder what goes on behind doors
A fella looking dapper, and he's sittin with a slapper
Then I see it's a pimp and his crack whore

You might laugh you might frown
Walkin' round London town

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
you can see it's all lies

There was a little old lady, who was walkin down the road
She was struggling with bags from Tesco
There were people from the city havin lunch in the park
I believe that is called al fresco
Then a kid came along to offer a hand

But before she had time to accept it
hits her over the head, doesn't care if she's dead
Cause he's got all her jewellery and wallet

You might laugh you might frown
walkin round London town

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
you can see it's all lies

Life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life
Life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
You can see it's all lies

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
You can see its all lies .

"Everything's Just Wonderful"

Do you think, everything, everyone, is going mental,
It seems to me that it's spiraling outta control and it's inevitable,
Now don't you think,
This time is yours, this time is mine,
It's temperamental,
It seems to me, we're on all fours,
Crawling on our knees,
Someone help us please

Oh Jesus Christ almighty,
Do I feel alright? No not slightly,
I wanna get a flat I know I can't afford it,
It's just the bureaucrats who won't give me a mortgage,
Well it's very funny cos I got your fucking money,
And I'm never gonna get it just because of my bad credit
Oh well I guess I mustn't grumble,
I suppose that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

[Chorus]
Oh yes, I'm fine,
Everything's just wonderful,
I'm having the time of my life.

Don't you want something else,
Something new, than what we've got here,
And don't you feel it's all the same,
Some sick game and it's not insincere,
I wish I could change the ways of the world,
Make it a nice place
Until that day, I guess we stay,
Doing what we do
Screwing who we screw

Why can't I sleep at night,
Don't say it's gonna be alright,
I wanna be able to eat spaghetti bolognaise,
and not feel bad about it for days and days and days.
In the magazines they talk about weight loss,
If I buy those jeans I can look like Kate Moss,
Oh no it's not the life I chose,
But I guess that's the way that things go,

[Chorus x2]

Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba [etc.]

Hope this helpes a little bit,
Lily

School Bag For teenage girls?

Love_like_

So I'm going to be a freshmen this year and in the beginning of 6th grade I wore a louis vuitton bag for school, but got a lot of nasty comments, so I switched to Kipling, then in 7 and 8 grade I had a juicy couture bag. For freshmen year I want a bag thats branded but that I like. I need it to be under $150, since I don't want to be way over the top. Sooo if any of you could list me links of bigger brands where I found find a good school bag. I would also like a shoulder bag. Anyways thanks a lot <3 xox

Answer
I recommend the Longchamp Le Pliage bag for high school, its nice and more mature, plus its more toned down so people wont talk bad about it. there are many colors to choose from, I personally like the Natural color. I have linked you to the large size but they have smaller ones available.

Question to high school kids? (boys or girls)?

Gabby

Is high school scary? Specifically freshman year? Are the cliques and the pressure less than, greater than, or about the same as the ones in middle school?

And, in short, did/do you like High School better than Middle School?

You don't have to answer all of those.....I'm just so scared about high school :(

Answer
I'm a freshman, going to grade 10 :)
So i clearly remember my first time.

High school was scary for me at first, you know, all the "big kids." You don't see little kids around you anymore, your not the oldest anymore.. your the youngest an the smallest.
The freshman year was GREATT! it flew by soo fast. It still seems like i started grade 9
The cliques and the pressure.. uhmm it depends which highschool. My highschool, yes there is. But i had no trouble fitting in. Everybody fits in with their own group, and most of the "cliques" are open and friendly about meeting new people.

In short, i LOVE highschool sooo much better than middle school! It is so much more fun.

Best parts:
-The guys are hotter, and you have more options.. since their older and all ;)
- You get more freedom, no more being pushed around.. like going out for recess when its boiling hot or when its freezing
-You can go in and out of the school during lunch
- No more carrying around lunch bags.. you can buy your lunch everyday
-Teachers don't push you around anymore
-you can meet way more friends.

worst parts:
-the work. don't worry, just pay attention in class and you'll do fine.
the teachers aren't going to chase you if you don't hand in an assignment. You fail automatically sometimes, and it's your responsibility.

something you should be careful bout:
-kids do smoke, drink. Just avoid these things. Don't get pressured.

why would a boy..?

paisleypwr

i know this sounds wierd but it happened.

why would a boy.. have a dildo in his school bag?

this is based on gossip, so it may not be true but i heard that a boy had a dildo in his bag and another boy was like WHY DO YOU HAVE THIS and the first boy said it was an ashtray. but he doesn't smoke. anyway, why would he have an ashtray in his bag? ash trays don't even look like dildos

what else could it have been?
he's new this year.
and is single

Answer
poor kid, he has a stigma now.
May be somebody put it in his back yo make fun of that boy? May be his girlfriend had forgotten it and he wanted to give it back? May it was his weird present for his gf? May be it really was a ashtray of a strange form?
Anyway it's just a rumor, you can't be sure its not false.

So i'm going to High School?

basketball

Well i'm starting high school this year and i have no idea what to do about clothes and a backpack/tote. I go to a school full of rich kids, but I can't afford all the stuff they can. I have to take scholarships for a lot of things at school, so does anyone have some ideas about what clothes to get that are on the cheap side but look nice? I'm dreading having to wear the same clothes as last year, sine people are judged a LOT by money at my school. I just don't know what to do. Btw I have a $100 budget. :(

Answer
$100 is plenty!!!!!!! Actually, you can go to many places, not just the ones known for being cheap. I always look for sales, and once you find them, you'll save a lot of money.

Here's a tip: when you go into stores, whether it's Hollister, H&M, express, forever21(which I love for sales!), or charlotte russe, go directly to the clearance or sales. Usually they'll have little racks of clothes that say "50% off" or "10$ and under" or something like that. You'll save a ton of money. Oh! You should also compare prices for similar clothes. For example, two days ago I saw some tank tops for $20.00 at Express, but they were only $3.50 at Forever21.

Going into High School...I have some questions? 10 Points best answer! :)?

Lucy

Ok so I just got out of 8th grade and I'm going to high school this year and I gotta be honest...I'm a little anxious..okay a LOT anxious. But anyways I just have a couple questions on like what clothes i should get and if i should get a bag or a backpack..that sort of thing.

1. What are some fashionable clothes? Or must haves?

2. What places should I shop that are inexpensive?

3. Everyone keeps telling me to get uggs..but everyone is going to have uggs! So are these still in for winter?: http://www.jildorshoes.com/images/products/SteveMaddenTylerGreySuede_Front_300.jpg
IF SO...WHAT COLOR?

4. Ok so I dont have a clue on what to get..A backpack or Bag?? Help!

5. If I do get a backpack I really really like this one (in navy blue): http://www.kipling-usa.com/product/index.jsp?clickid=body_rv_img&productId=2993393

I know its a lot of money...its really durable and waterproof but is it worth it? If not is there a backpack you can find that is like it for less money??

well thanks soo much for answering! Remember! 10 POINTS BEST ANSWER!!!!
So please make it good :) and please dont joke around.

p.s. I DONT WANT A ROLLER BACKPACK

Answer
1. MUST HAVES
* converse
* colorful cami's (to layer)
* a couple plaid shirts
* a graphic tee
* black or white flats
* JEANS! (at least 4 different pairs)
* yoga or sweatpants
* SOFFE SHORTS! (they really come in handy for after school stuff & gym + I would probably die without them. You need at least 2 solid color pairs)
* a CASUAL dress
* cardigan (to pair with dress above or a cool tank top)
* Cute tank tops (at least 3)

2. PLACES TO SHOP

* OUTLET MALLS!
* Hollister (clearance)
* Abercrombie kids & Fitch (clearance)
* JCpenny (love that store)
* FOREVER21 (best store ever created)
* Wetseal
* PacSun
* Aeropostale
* American Eagle

3.
No. Uggs aren't in style anymore, They have been around for 4 years!
I personally HATE uggs, and I think that you should spend your money on those shoes you put into the link instead of ugly uggs.

4/5.
I personally would go with the bag pack, because you are able to carry more stuff, very comfortable, and can be very stylish. Now I would say that bag isn't the BEST choice, and it sure isn't waterproof.
I hate them a couple years pack (paid $150) and they were absolutely NOT waterproof, my text books were soaking wet. If I were you I would go with a Jansport bag, or go to HotTopic and buy a unique bag (what I am doing) http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/WhatsNew/Accessories/Invader-Zim-Gir-Face-Backpack-246397.jsp it may seem dorky but it totally cute.

typed so much, fingers are bleeding(:

I Love Hello Kitty... am I going to get made fun of in high school?

Hi! I'm going in to high school on the 25th... and I LOVE hello kitty. I don't talk about it at all. (i'm not one of those people who rattle on and on about their obsessions/interests) But I bought some hello kitty school supplies, a bunch of swarovski hello kitty jewelery and some hello kitty hand bags, a pair of hello kitty converse etc. etc.

are people going to make fun of me?

PS I am not an anime-nerd. I just have a really sensitive sweet spot for cuteness (sanrio characters, puppies, babies, cupcakes etc)

PPS I'm not asian

Answer
first of all....LOL at the asian thing

If you act cool about it then everyone will just be like whatever, you know?
Be like yeah i love hello kitty got a problem with it? because my foot is taking complaints in a department called your @$$

just kidding, no you won't be made fun of! I love hello kitty, she's adorable! just be proud and don't worry i doubt anyone will care. At my old school one girl would come everyday in old timey clothes and sometimes even like a doll(with lots of make up and the cute outfits) and poeple thought she was cool! So you never know, right? just go for it and dont worry

New school makeover help?

karate

am so nervous. This August I am going to start a new school. I am just so scared part of the reason I am switching was my current school hates my gutts they openly mock me or they completly ignore me. I don't understand why I have never been purposely mean to someone-EVER. what if my new school hates me?Then on top of that we are moving houses.

1.What should I do to get ready for the next school year I am rather small, quiet, shy, nerdy, not athletic?

2. I wear glasses because I CAN'T HAVE CONTACTS (eyes don't have enoug moisture or something) so should I get like black/conservative or funky colors (i like both)

3.Should I get a fake tan or a real tan?

4.should I get a whole new wardrobe (fresh start) or just wear my old stuff because nobody will have seen me in it ?

5.Should I go by my given name- Claire (given name) or Callie?

6 What cellphone should I get- need a new one (tmobile or legally gsm unlocked phones only)

7 what type of purse should I have (vera bradley, coach, leather, big, small) etc

8. What would be a fun theme to decorate my new room (were moving)- im kinda girly but don't want a kids room?
9. I really like Hello kitty (is that too nerdy to share?

THOUGH DO KEEP IN MIND I AM JUST ASKING FOR SUGESTIONS ON HOW TO BETTER FIT IN I WILL TAKE WHAT I LIKE FROM YOUR SUGESTIONS- I WANT TO HAVE A PERSONALITY MAKEOVER BUT STILL WANT TO BE MYSELF
I am just so scared everyone at my current school treats me like dirt because I don't have lond blonde hair and make out with the first boy I see. I have never tried to be mean to anyone but everyone treats me like SH*T!- i just have a whole new chance and I don't want to blow it and just have a repeat of this year!
my given name is claire but ll my friends call me Callie (its my nickname- so I didn't just randomely choose a name though that might be fun sometime)

then I have a backpack to take my binders and books but at my urrent school every girl has a purse- for car keys, pencils, makeup, girl products) my back would kill me if I tried carrying all my books in a purse- thugh bet it would make me stronger.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.switched.com/media/2008/03/hello_kitty.gif- is hello kitty!

Answer
9. Hello Kitty is really cool:) [I'm wearing a hello kitty ring right now!] Thats okay to share.
8. You don't have to have a theme, jus put what you like; watch movies and go online for idea
7. Bigger purses are whats in; but get what you want. When I went to public school I had a tote so I could carry my school stuff and my purse stuff, so I wouldn't have to have a lamester book bag. But don't buy an exensive purse; thats just a waste of money. You can get really cute ones at clairs or target.
6. Uhm, get a Rumor or something like that:)
5. Callie is cute:)
4. You should get new clothes but keep the old ones too:) You'll have a lot more clothing options then:D
3. Real tan, fake tans don't look that good usually.
2. Get some cool looking glasses, like black frame or red frames are cool; no wire glasses.
1. Just have fun :D

Will I be in cold if I wear like this in the UK?

FallingApa

I will be going to Manchester, Glasgow and Iceland (not uk)

The style im planning to wear alot is

Dress (not knitted, just thin cotton fabric)
Tights
Cardigan
Lightweight jacket (I still havent found this should I buy it here or just buy it over in the uk) (im thinking of something like a thin fabric pea coat?)
Ballet flats / boots

Sweater
Shorts (workwear fabric)
Tights
Lightweight jacket
Ballet flats

Answer
That should be fine, but then again, it depends on what you're used to. Have a google around for what the temperature usually is in Manchester or Glasgow at the time of year you plan to come, think how that compares with home and see what you think. I wouldn't advise shorts unless it turns out to be an unusually warm day. I'm male, live in London and very rarely get to wear mine, though I always did as a kid because it was part of the school uniform up to the age of 11 (older people feel the cold more!)

The other thing is that UK weather can be incredibly variable, which is one reason the English famously talk about the weather. I've long since given up taking notice of weather forecasts. Expect rain at any time, though it doesn't rain ALL the time - that really is a myth. A cheap plastic raincoat with a hood that you can fold up small and carry in your bag just in case is no bad idea. A cardigan or sweater with something underneath is good because if it suddenly gets warmer and you feel hot and sweaty (that's another thing: because the UK is an island nation, there's always damp in the air and what can feel nicely hot in another country can be an uncomfortable mugginess here) you can take it off.

Perhaps it's a bit much for a guy to advise a girl on what to wear, but I DO live here and know what it can be like, and I hope it helps.

I need a bike for the city. What should I get?

seanstshib

I need something that's not flashy (it will be used in Glasgow where thieves like anything). My journey is uphill, but quite short. I would use it 2/3 times a day, 6 days out of 7 probably. So yeah durability.
I also dunno whether I should invest in disc brakes or not - Glasgow is quite a wet place so I dunno if that would help for an answer.
Err I was considering a fold-able bike for the thievery reason as well, but also so that I could keep it out of the night.
I have up to £600 to spend I suppose.
The fold-able thing is also good cos I take the train back to Edinburgh, my real home, quite often.
Another point is that I carry quite a bit of stuff when I cycle (ie a heavy guitar in a flight case on my back, books etc for uni in a man-bag around my front).
I would like it to last me.

Cheers.

Answer
Get the best bang for your buck. I strong frame and you can always upgrade later is the mentality to go with. If thieves are around make sure to convert all the quick release parts with actual bolts the retailers will sell or give to you in trade. This goes for seat posts, and both wheels. Disc brakes are not a must but stay true longer than old school. Get a front and rear removable light set, so not one takes it off the bike when you're not around too. If you want to keep quick release on the bike wheels make sure to get used to locking the bike by the back tire, through the frame and removing the front tire and locking it with the back one and frame. Put a pannier on the back to place a crate on any milk crate and bungies will do the trick, this will take the weight off of your back and legs (which will save you energy) while transporting your books and stuff.
As far as what type of bike, a city crossover/hybrid (mt.bike mixed with road) with a few gears I would go with, make sure it has tires that are not too slick so you can have traction in case you have to go off the usual path. I prefer a mild front fork suspension too, just to be safe, from potholes, drop-offs, curbs and other road hazards. BUY A LOCK WITH A BRAND NAME YOU CAN TRUST TOO! KRYPTONITE IS THE BEST I THINK. Good luck and remember one more bike on the road means one less car:)

What are the top ten things i need for 9th grade?

ballet dan

not like binders or notebooks. i already have all those things. but what do you guys think are the top ten things i would need for 9th grade. (14 year old girl)

Answer
1.a planner definetly! some schools give them out and otehrs dont. i would buy your own in case, and get em early because everyone takes all the good stuff by september.

2. big backpack - you will get many heavy textbooks. and get a backpack you wont regret later.

3. pens and pencils - mechanical is better because then u dont have to sharpen them and get up during class. pens are good for note taking

4. confidence - freshmen year is tough and all the older kids will bother you but try not to let it get to you

5. sensible clothing- many people will try to dress like sluts, goths, gangsters, etc. so try to wear clothes that you wont regret later. try to to attract attention so no neon colors, and weird things like that. and unfortunately people judge by clothing as well so be careful

6. a good dictionary - you will probably need it for homework, unless u prefer looking online

7. a graphing calculator if you're going into like geometry or algebra 2

8. keep you schedule on you at all times, but not like in your hand. (unless its the first day) maybe inside a notebook or your planner.

9. keep items you will need through out the day in your bag. chapstick, a mirror, maybe a comb and girl products, a bandaid

10. you should really have a phone fully charged in case you need to stay after and need to call parents and stuff like that. im sure u probably have one at 14, but i didnt my first year so i had to borrow my dads phone

backpack picture ?????

bmxer803

I am going to buy a back pack for school and i want a "system of a down" backpack.I have looked for patches to put on a normal backpack but nothing is big enough.
please find me a item or site where i can customize a SINGLE backpack.
OR just a regular system of a down backpack

Answer
one idea you can try, get some of these

Avery #3279 Inkjet Dark T-Shirt Iron-on Transfers (5 pack)
http://www.110220volts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=10154792

so you can grab whatever logo you find on the net, print on one of those w/ your favorite word processor / image print utility and iron-on to get your custom backpack!

My wife had made custom tshirts for all the kids at my son's pokemon b-day party, I printed out one page-per kid w/ the kid's name (in a cool font) for the top back, a pokeball with the kid's name for the front pocket, and a big image of their fave pokemon on the back. Point being, you can print mutiple pics on one page, cut-out and iron-on to get a lot of small image or one big image (or a combination of the two) so you can get a lot of iron-on xfers per-page.

cheers

Answer
No. It's not a good ergonomic design. The shoulder straps are too narrow and will cut into the top of your shoulder when carrying a heavy load of books.

What is the best type of backpack for high school/college girl?

lalalala

I need a new backpack. It needs to be big enough to hold a some big binders and textbooks that I will be carrying around in highschool and that will last for use in college. Which one should I get?
I would specifically like to know which backpack brand would be best to have

Answer
I'm at University and I bought a new bag after I got accepted. I really, really love my Taargus. It's large enough to carry around my books, it has a padded compartment for my laptop, the straps are padded, and it has a strap across the front to distribute the weight more evenly. It also has 2 pouches on the outside that are the perfect size for water bottles or soda bottles. They're a little more expensive than something like a Jansport, but they hold up really well and are more ergonomic.

what do girls do when a boy goes into their school bag and finds pads and tampons.?

Chel Belle

I was at school and all the boys went into my bag and saw tampons . It is really embarrasing . I dont no what to do.

Answer
I'd be watching their dumb reaction. If they act out, it's because they're big babies, not even close to being ready to date. It's stupid to joke about that, moreso in that it shows them up as being really immature.
You can see why it's said that girls mature faster than boys...

Nervous about high school! (girl)?

Krissy

okay, so im 14, going into high school as a fresh(girl?) and I'm very nervous, I have seen what happened to my brothers in high school (drugs, leading to jail and ruining my family) and I'm mostly afraid of bullies and drugs, also more homework and harder tests, I want to get a scholarship but I'm afraid I won't be able to , I'm not that smart (i guess).
Im afraid that one day during class I go to the bathroom and there are girls doing drugs in there.. I really don't like drugs at all... I just need reassurance and comfort. thanks guys <3

Where can I find a good, reliable, high-quality backpack for school?

DefenceDes

Priced reasonably like around 40 to 80 (less or more)

Answer
I just started grad school and I have used the same backpack since high school, I kid you not. LL bean's backpacks are indestructible!!!

Parents, what kind/brand of backpack is best?

rainwriter

I know that as a general rule, the pasticy feeling ones with licensed characters all over them are lower quality than others. What brand of backpack have you found to be the best, both in terms of looking cool and being high quality and resilient?

Answer
We get backpacks from Mountain Equipment Co-Op because they are very good quality and good for your back if you are carrying lots of stuff. My kids have had their backpacks since they started school and they are going into grades 5 and 8. Mind you, we use them for school, and school only, so that probably helps. I don't know if they are "cool", but I do know that there are several other kids in their school with the same kind.

A gift for a 12-year-old boy?

Wild Ivy

*** I don't have a Yahoo email account so I am using my big sister's one ***

I have this mad crush on this guy, who is my classmate,
I want to get him something for his birthday, which is coming up soon.
I was thinking of chocolate, but I can't bring such a big box/packet to school.
So I thought that maybe I could buy some and put it in a small bag and give it to him? is that a good idea??

Or is there something else? No gift cards, i can't get that.
Nothing more than RM 20 please, I only saved that up, the rest is in the bank.
RM = Ringgit Malaysia

Answer
Well chocolate is a good idea :)
You could get him some special ones, in a little bag and then write something cute on the tag like "Happy Birthday" Lots of love ..... xxx :) Make it look like you've gone to alot of trouble and not have someone else give it to him, make sure you give it to him and smile.
Hope I help :D

Fashionable School Bag?

I want a fashionable school bag. Price really doesn't matter. I was thinking a Long Champ bag.

Answer
If you're looking for fashion but utility at the same time. Get a fancy backpack like Dakine. They have very contemporary designs with actual practicality.

If you're solely out to look good and you don't bring much to school. I suggest a leather messenger bag. Those are really classy and go well with any outfit, business chic or casual.

When I was a little boy I like to go outside and play in the yard. As a boy I had toy trucks and cars I kept in my book bag. All my friends and cousins would come to my house to play video games. As a boy I liked to climb the tree in my backyard. As a boy, I never liked to eat my vegetables. I was a child that had a lot of hair. I was very social and liked to talk to other children and adults. My friends were a mix of boys and girls and they were all a lot of fun. I could sleep in as late as i wanted when i was really little. My mom would make me sit at the table until I ate them. That really did not work because I would just sit there. Our neighborhood had a lot of kids, and we spent all summer playing.
We considered an entire two or three blocks to be our private playground, playing hide-and-seek or war. When I went to school I played basketball will all the bigger kids. I used to play soccer for my school. I was very misbehaved as a little boy. I was always in timeout and detention. At recess everyone would play softball so I would try to play but the older kids would always take my turn. Then they saw I was really good so they let me play.
In the summer I would go to camp with my brothers for the whole summer. At camp I played capture the flag and had water balloon fights. At camp we did a lot of fun activities and games. When we got back home everyone would want to know how it went. As a boy, me and my friends would ride ours bikes around the neighborhood and have races. I would always win and we all got left with scares. We had a dog when I was younger as well. The dog was very rough and playful. The first time I saw him, he knock me over. Summer was always a wonderful time. The swimming pool always opened the Monday after school was out, and Malcom and I were always allowed to use the one dollar refund of our school book deposit fee to buy a summer's season ticket at the swimming pool. The pool was across town, just past the football field, not far from the city park
In the winters I remember always playing in the snow. We had snow ball fight and made snowmen. When I was younger there was a big blizzard and the snow was over my head. One day school got canceled and my mom made my favorite. Then me and my brothers went out to play in the snow. I put on my favorite boots.
As a boy I went to Disney World with my school. We went to all the amusement parks and ate at a lot of restaurants. The rides were all fun and the food was delicious. Me and my friend got lost for a couple hours and everyone was looking for us.Then my parents came and took me and my brothers to Universal Studios. All the rides there were fun too like the roller coaster.
When I got a little older I started to play football. I was in little league and I had never played before. I was fast so the coaches put me some where on the field. Then started to really like football.

What would happen at a middle school if a student their committed suicide at home?

Losasha

I am not going to do it, I am just curious what the school would do. (Teachers & kids, etc.)
i meant "there"

Answer
I can relate. [Somewhat.] Because in our school, St. Paul, just a year ago [2007], we had a 1st grader that was kidnapped, and raped. Her body's disposal wasn't pleasant; her limbs have been cut off and were stuffed inside her stroller bag.

[This was in the news in Philippines. I'm serious when I say she's a 1st grader. The school was SPCP; If you know that.]

I know this isn't 'suicide', but it still has the concept of what would happen if a student was killed somewhere other than inside the school. I'll tell you what our school did -- the Principals raised the security levels by threefold, and the school became more private than it ever was. No one can come in or out without a verification from the student being fetched, or without any form of identification. No ID, no entry.

I guess it was weird... a 1st grader, and her nanny was an accomplice. Her dad was the one that instructed, I heard. She was headed to a a Math-enhancement program when things, well, you know.

[Long answer, I know.]

I need help for the first day of school!?

thebigfish

i just moved in to US this june and i'm going to school at september , im from Philippines which is alot different from here .
