What type of items are your kids required to purchase for school?

school bags for girls age 7 image

My children are expected to bring 1-3 boxes of Kleenex. Then depending on the kid several of following items: dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, clorox wipes, headphones and/or liquid hand soap. I know that school budgets are tight but so is my budget at home. These items add up quickly - we have four children.

In addition to these janitoral items that we are expected to supply, the two middle school age children are required to have a seperate, new pair of shoes for gym class. Yes, I mean in addition to the new shoes that they bought with their back to school apparel.

All of this expense seems excessive to me. Is this typical of all school districts or do I have reason to be upset by this?
It is public school. I think if the janitoral list was a request instead a demand, I would be okay with sending some supplies. I just think it is crazy that I have sent almost $40 in janitoral supplies to school in the last two days and my kindergartener hasn't even gone yet! Of course that is in addition to the shoe thing. We did by inexpensive shoes but even $20 or $30 multiplied times for four is a lot. I'm just really aggravated with the whole thing.

Answer
I wish I lived in some of the places in the other answers! For Pre K last yr my son had to have (among other things) 2 pkgs safety pins (he used about 7 the whole year) EXPO markers (yes, big emphasis on expo) 2 bxs of baby wipes, 1 box gallon bags, (girls had to bring 1 box quart bags) 6 glue sticks, and 1 bttl shaving cream. (girls brought zip lock bags)

This yr for Kindergarten--(again, among other crap) 1 box 8 jumbo crayons, 1 box 16 regular crayons, 2 md size elmers glue, 10 lg glue sticks (are they sticking each other to the wall?) watercolors, 1 box quart zipper bags, 1 box gallon zipper bags, 2 boxes of 10 ct CLASSIC CRAYOLA (must, must, must) markers, 2 pkgs baby wipes, 1 bttl hand sanitizer (which Micah can only use sparingly, bc he has excema, and the alcohol drys his skin dreadfully) 1 pkg EXPO ONLY THIN TIP markers, and a backpack, plus we had to BUY a 5.00 book bag at the school. (fits one book, for their library days...wtf?) And of course some damn paper towels. Last yr he only needed 1 box of Kleenex, this year he needs 3. Most kids in Kindergarten just wipe their nose on their sleeves.

I would understand if SOME of these supplies were needed for the kids in the state programs such as Headstart, (Pre K for lower income families) but hell, they're not required to buy ANYTHING. And there's no such program after PreK. So what the fu*k are all these supplies being used for? OK, OK, maybe some of these outrageous demands are for the kids in his class that can't afford ALL their supplies--but there are lots of school drives around our area where they give out FREE supplies. And with 20 kids in a class, even if only half bring all the things on the list, we're still looking at 100 damn glue sticks. Give me a break.

Some friends in different states said that Micah's list sounded about like their kids' lists. So I guess it's normal in a lot of places. (I live in TX, btw) But I still think it's over the top and ridiculous. Plus, who knows how much money I'm going to be sending to school for the various events (field trips) and book fairs and parties this year?

I think that they should let you have back the supplies you bought that your child didn't use at the end of the year.

How do normal girls get ready in the morning?

Amy

I know it's horrible, but I never wash my face in the morning or do anything to my hair. I'm kind of a "grunge" girl, and I guess I'm just wondering what normal girls do to get ready in the morning.

Answer
To be honest, there isn't really a 'normal', practically everyone I know is different. I'll tell you what my morning timetable is though (this is a school morning btw)

6:00 - Wake up and go straight in shower
6:10 - get out of shower and spend a few minutes getting dry
6:15 - put dressing gown on and dry my hair with hairdryer
6:25 - either straighten/curl my hair
7:00 - get dressed
7:05 - go downstairs, maybe have breakfast
7:20 - make sure bag is packed
7:22 - quickly do make up (can never be bothered to spend ages)
7:25 - leave to catch bus

Overall it takes me almost an hour and a half to get ready.

I'm talking about me. I'm 15 and my school bag is purple. My older brothers call me hurtful names. Is there something wrong with me?

Answer
Hell no. Purple used to be/sometimes still associated with homosexuality. But that's garbage. I'm not gay, and I think purple is a bad ass color. And hey, if Kobe and the Lakers can wear it, anyone can :)

What are good jobs to apply for at the age of 14?

Julia

I'm 14-years-old and I really want a job. I was very interested in working at ikea, but you have to be at least 18. I was wondering what great job opportunities are out there for people my age. So if you could tell me whatever company that you know that hires people at my age (but not a bag boy job or anything of that nature) Thanks!

Answer
Employment opportunities are very limited for someone younger than 16. Federal law says you can't work more than 3 hours on a school day and none when school is in session. State law dictates what type of job you can hold and what hours you can work which can be more restrictive than federal law. Sometimes the hours are so restrictive that even if it would be legal to hire you no one will because you can't work the hours when you're needed. In some states the employer needs to fill out a lot of paperwork to get permission to hire you. Most don't want to be bothered and certainly don't want to risk a fine. You'll need to visit your states website to find the restrictions where you live.

I need some simple recipes for homecooking thing at school, i don't really need the ingredients or how to make them just an idea or a name would be fine.

Answer
Favorite E-Z recipes you might want to try.
Good Luck & enjoy.

COLA CHICKEN
(And more variations of recipe)
(My personal favoritesâ¦.using this recipe
are the âwings & ribsâ¦.ummm good!)

4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 cup catsup
1 12oz. can cola (pepsi, coke, etc.)

Put chicken in a non-stick pan.
Mix together catsup and cola, pour over chicken.
Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and cook 45 minutes.
(turning chicken a few times, while cooking...to prevent from sticking to pan)
Uncover, turn up the heat and continue to cook until the sauce
becomes thick and adheres to the chicken.
It turns into the most incredible BBQ sauce. Yummmm!

You can double the recipe and use more pieces of
chicken....wings...would be ideal...add some hot sauce....presto "Hot Wings"!

I have used Ribs, just as good.

I tried this recipe with 'meatballs'....was equally
as good...served over rice.

I found another variation.....omit the catsup and add a small jar of Salsa (any variety).
I have tried using Salsa (omitting the catsup....not).
You'd think a recipe with only '3' ingredients couldn't be messed up....wouldn't you??
Well...while I was preparing to fix the 'Cola Chicken' recipe
using Salsa.....I was also trying to carry on a conversation with my
husband...(just proves...I can't do two things at once)....mixed Salsa & Catsup (before I realized I was supposed to leave out the catsup) & Cola........still turned out really tasty (to me)...might be a little sweeter than some of you like.

I fixed chicken wings, (using the above recipe)
but...I added the spices from a MILD (I don't care for "HOT") Buffalo Wings packet...(the kind you get to bake in the oven).....I thought it was really good.....(but you/I can't find a 'bad' way to fix chicken).

Finally....!! I fixed the 'SALSA' chicken......that's good , too.

Another (bright)idea.....I thought of trying......replace the
catsup with a bottle of Shrimp Cocktail Sauce...and add a bag of (pop corn) shrimp.....!
Fixed the shrimp with cocktail sauce......eh...wasn't all that
great...was OK...probably won't be fixing it again.

Also tried beef stew cuts......that was pretty good.....I can see
myself making this again.
Served both over rice.....think the stew cuts would have been just as
good over noodles.

Gonna try some butterfly cut pork chopesâ¦..or boneless chopsâ¦or pork steaksâ¦â¦should be good!

Try little cocktail wieners/sausagesâ¦for appetizers.

4 boneless/skinless chicken breast (or any pieces you like)

Serve over noodles or rice or dressing....or???

1 pkg. dry Italian dressing mix
1 pkg. dry Brown Gravy mix
1 cup water
Put beef in pot.

Until meat is tender.
The first time I mad it I didnât have the Italian Dressing mixâ¦.so I added a pkg. of Onion Soup Mixâ¦.I have to say I liked that better.
If you use more water you might want to add more Brown Gravy mixâ¦.to make a thicker sauce. Was gonna add

What can I make for my parents 25th Anniversary dinner?

booshette

It's my parent's 25th wedding anniversary this week and neither of them want a huge fuss. So I was going to make them a surprise meal and get a few presents. There will only be three maybe four of us. I'm not the most amazing cook & I'm going to have lots of work to do as well from school.
So does anyone have any ideas for a simple , but different & tasty (most importantly) meal I can make for my parents?

Answer
This is a good menu. Add some dinner rolls and salad for a complete easy meal -- congratulations to your parents!

Roast Sticky Chicken-Rotisserie Style
Servings: 4

2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 onions, quartered
1 (4 pound) whole chicken
Directions:
1. In a small bowl, mix together salt, paprika, onion powder, thyme, white pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder. Remove and discard giblets from chicken. Rinse chicken cavity, and pat dry with paper towel. Rub chicken inside and out with spice mixture. Place onion into the cavity of chicken. Place chicken in a resealable bag or double wrap with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight, or at least 4 to 6 hours.
2. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
3. Place chicken in a roasting pan. Bake uncovered for 5 hours, to a minimum internal temperature of 180 degrees F (85 degrees C). Let the chicken stand for 10 minutes before carving.

Roasted New Red Potatoes
Servings: 4

1-1/2 pounds small red new potatoes, halved
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon Salt and freshly ground black
pepper
Directions:
1. Adjust oven rack to lowest position and heat oven to 450 degrees. Toss potatoes with oil, salt and pepper. Arrange, cut side down, on a large lipped cookie sheet or jellyroll pan.
2. Roast until tender and golden brown, about 30 minutes (check after 20 minutes). Transfer to a serving dish.

German Style Green Beans
2 - 3 slices bacon, fried crisp
3 tablespoons onion, chopped
2 can green beans, drained
3 tablespoons vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoon sugar
Reserve bacon drippings in skillet. Sautee onion in drippings until transparent. Add beans, vinegar and sugar. Heat over medium heat stirring frequently for about 10 minutes. Crumble bacon over beans and toss before serving.

Chocolate Cherry Cake
1 package Devil's Food cake mix
1 can cherry pie filling
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 eggs, well beaten
¼ cup butter, melted
½ cup cocoa powder
¼ teaspoon salt
â cup milk
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
3 ½ cups powdered sugar
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9 x 13" baking pan. In large bowl combine mix, cherry filling, almond extract and eggs. Stir well, careful not to destroy cherries. Spread into prepared pan and bake 30 - 35 minutes, until toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean.

After cake is removed from oven and still hot, prepare frosting by combining melted butter, cocoa and salt. Then add milk and vanilla. In three parts, mix in sugar. Mix until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if too stiff for spreading.

Spread on cake while still warm.

Anybody know of any good dehydrated recipes?

pbjsamiche

We are going backpacking in October when the leaves start turning. We have a food dehydrator. I've only used it for the occasional banana chips for the kids and jerky for the husband. I know I can make meals for the trip, but I just don't know how and I can't think of anything to make. If anybody has done this before, let me know about it. Or if you know of any good websites. Would it also be possible to use it on the pureed baby food I'm making? I've searched without any luck. Thanks guys!

Answer
Fruit roll ups---take 1 lb strawberries and blend with 1 cup of apple juice in a blender until pureed...lay out your dehyrated tray with plastic wrap, pour the mixture onto the wrap, cook in dehyrator for a day, cut into pieces and ziplock bag it

Turkey Jerky-like Beef jerky-basted turkey slices in 1/4 cup liquid smoke and soy sauce, 2 tablesppon of Brown Sugar and drop of sesame oil. you can do it with chicken as well

Dehrated Watermelon--medium slices of Watermelon, cooked and bagged

you can also dehyrate apples, plums, sliced strawberries, Cranberries, Peaches and Grapes as well as bananas

enjoy the trip and the great dehyrated foods

Can I work with my parents if I cant find a job?

Daniel O

am going to be a F1 visa student when I turn 21. I am 19 years old, studying to transfer to UC Santa Barbara pursuing computer science major.

My parents are here in the United States with their E2 visa owned dry cleaning business for the last 11 years. So I am an E2 visa dependent right now.

I am having this constant fear about failing computer science degree nor getting jobs with it. Since I am not very studious person. Also, if I get laid off, I will have to leave this country. I do not feel confident.

To be honest with you, I like working with labors. Its the kind of thing that I feel most comfortable with. I have limited knowledge about dry cleaning, but if I learn I can do it.

I want to talk to my parents and tell them what I really want to be. I cannot leave this country because my family is here. Also I will have to join the Korean army for 2 years. Which is a complete waste of time.

What should I do?
Or is my only path is to get bachelor degree and hope to find a job? I am scared.

Answer
My wife and I owned a dry cleaners. My two sons at various times worked for us. They had legitimate jobs, wee paid a salary and were on the books. You do not have to know cleaning to work in a dry cleaners. There are other jobs such as working the counter, marking clothes in, and bagging.

You can also go to school part time and take evening classes.

Good luck./

is South Korea a safe country to go teaching in?

ella-blah2

I want to teach english, can anyone give me some info on agencies and the country itself?

Answer
Yes, South Korea is very safe to live.

Yes, the North/South Issue is always on your mind when you live there. There was a near sink of a South Korean Navy Ship by the North when I live there in 2002 to 2004. In addition, there were several military shootings across the DMZ.

As for the day to day life, it is really nice. There are many places to go, the people are very friendly, and the job it self is not to bad.

Being an English Teacher is part being able to put up with the English School B.S., having the right students, and most of all being able to put it behind you when you go home for the day. The best thing I would recommend is the public school. This is called the EPIK Program, a great city is Seoul or Pusan (sometime called Busan).

http://www.teachaway.com/content/epik-english-program-korea-public-school-jobs-korea

Try to stay away from the private schools, they can be a mixed bag.
Also try Pusan Web;

http://www.pusanweb.com/

This is a website of mostly foreigners living in South Korea. Also there are many Koreans who want to meet and make friends with Foreigners. I would recommend this site to meet people before you get to South Korea. You can also find postings for jobs, apartment, and forums, and general information on Korea.

Also try Korea Bridge, it has a lot of the same info as Pusan Web, but more detail.

http://koreabridge.net/

If you like South Korea after the first year another great job is teach at the Universities.

If you have more questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

What meals should I learn to cook before coming to USA?

Maverick

I'm going to USA this summer. I have no cooking skills whatsoever and I don't know what type of food should I learn to prepare. Should I take some culinary classes or can I look at online recipes and prepare the foods myself. Also, what breakfast, lunch and dinners are common in USA. I'm asking this as I want to be better prepared before going there and I want to make sure I don't have to end up eating in those expensive restaurants over there.

Thank you for your help in advance. :)

Answer
You're going to want to make things that you like to eat--so it's hard to tell what that will be exactly ;0...but I'm going to give you the website for Kraft Foods who has an excellent recipe site...it also has a feature where you can put in ingredients and it pulls up a recipe for you...
http://www.kraftrecipes.com/home.aspx

There's even a section called "Cooking School" and they have videos to follow along. Just by browsing through the site and recipes, you will find things that appeal to you. Print out your favorites.
You will need to get yourself a set of measuring cups and set of measuring spoons as our measurements may differ a bit.

Your best bet is to get someone to show you how to make a few things once you're settled in...and to go grocery shopping with you. Learn where the farmers' market is in your area to get fresh produce, etc at a cheaper price while things are in season.

There is always youtube.com that has instructional videos on how to prepare things. Many meals are already made in frozen dept that come in bags...same goes for frozen waffles, pancakes, and anything you want really.....make sure you have a microwave, it'll come in handy...and a toaster, a grill/griddle for indoor use is very good to have also.

Good luck in your new journey....and welcome to the USA

Answer
No. Why would you be laughed at for carrying a messenger bag?

Where to buy a cheap juicy couture school backpack?

harry2011

I want to get a juicy couture backpack for my cousins. I have no much money. Where to sell cheap juicy couture bags.

Answer
To find a cheap juicy couture school back pack is easy.
Three ways:
1. Go to thrift stores, consignment shops and used clothing stores close to you and see if you could find Juicy Couture on sale or at a discounted amount. Be sure to carefully examine the Juicy Couture for quality before you buy.

2. Visit Ebay to get Cheap Juicy Couture. Several Ebay sellers list and sell Juicy Couture at a cheaper price because they are competing against other sellers on Ebay.in the search field at the top of the page, type "Juicy Couture".

3. Search on the google.com, yahoo.com or bing.com to get Cheap Juicy Couture. When you perform your online search for Juicy Couture, try using keyword phrases including: "Cheap Juicy Couture", "Discount Juicy Couture". It should display a list of stores online that sell Cheap Juicy Couture.

Example:
type "cheap juicy couture school backpack".
It shows:

What is the best dog food to feed my German Shepherd and why?

Wintergirl

Aside from cooking her meat myself, what's the best quality dry dog food? I just spent $45 on a bag of Royal Canin, and Costco's dog food has chicken & chicken meal as the 1st 2 ingredients, while Royal Canin's 2nd ingredient is rice!

Answer
There is no single food that is "best". For example, some dogs thrive on grain-free foods, while grain-free is too rich for other dogs. What you want to find is the high-quality food that *your dog* does best on.

I recommend feeding dry food. It's healthier for the gums and teeth.

---

On choosing a good dog food:
Read the ingredients on the food you buy. Go with a high quality dog food. A grain should not be in the first couple ingredients ingredient (corn and such are mainly fillers, dogs don't digest it well). Avoid foods that have a lot of "by products" listed.

Here is an article about byproducts:
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=ingrd

And an article on what ingredients to avoid:
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients

---

Some GOOD foods are :
* Merrick - http://www.merrickpetcare.com/
* Solid Gold - http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/
* Canidae - http://www.canidae.com/
* Timberwolf - http://timberwolforganics.com/
* Orijen - http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/orijen/
* Wellness - http://www.omhpet.com/wellness/
* Chicken Soup brand - http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/
* Blue Buffalo - http://www.bluebuff.com/
* Innova - http://www.naturapet.com/brands/innova.asp
* Innova EVO - http://www.naturapet.com/brands/evo.asp

Or check this website for good foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
(I recommend only feeding foods rated 4, 5, or 6 stars. Anything 3 stars or less, I would stay away from.)

---

Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, etc.)

Beware "premium" foods. "Premium" does not mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. It has the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc..)

Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that's why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don't focus a lot on nutrition. It's not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told "this is good food", so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it's good as well.

---

Higher quality food may seem more expensive at first, but it evens out. The higher quality the food, the less fillers eaten (and therefore the less poop comes out the other end). Your dog eats more to try to get the nutrition it needs, and most of the food just passes right on through. Also, it will make your animals healthier, so you save money on vet bills in the long run.

---

"Big box" petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. (I do believe that PetCo sells "Solid Gold" brand, which is a quality food, but most of the foods aren't.)

Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren't good places to buy food either.

Your best bets for getting quality dog food are:
- small, locally owned petstores
- dog boutiques
- farm supply stores

---

When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A
.

How to transition back to a prep or just normal looking girl?

Vanessa

Ok. So. In intermediate school through Middle school I went through some phases known as emo and scene and currently im a freshman in highschool and some of my peers still see me that way and I really dont want to remembered like that so how do I tone it down for now until I have a good budget to go shopping for a new look and where are some cute places to buy clothes and normal teen stuff? Btw my hair is growing out from a pixie so its kind of a bob / shag so there isnt much I can do with it . And its red but im working on getting it strawberry blonde my natural hair color is dark sable brown and I have dark brown eyes. If that helps.. Sorry it was so long. Thanks! Please help.

Answer
It must be hard adjusting with the change in personality, but you will get through it...its a part of life!!!

First, tone everything down, generally. I have never met a "emo" or a "scene" kid before, and I don't like stereotypes AT ALL, but from the little knowledge I have......

Make up should not be defined as tons of black makeup smeared all over the eyes. Again, I dont know if you do this, but this is (unfortunately,) stereotypical, and I personally feel that it might be a little much for school. Light, fresh eye make up is desirable.

The clothes: Dark colors, with rainbow, almost child-like accessories. (Again, this is what I know from YouTube and gossip, so please excuse me, I don't like this type of thing at all.) Try adding colors into your wardrobe, and get classier jewelry, even from cheap places like Khols, Old Navy, or Forever 21. Keep it toned down, yet classy. You can always make a statement through red pants, or a big pair of earrings. I think you should do a deep conditioning treatment, to get your bleached hair healthy and shiny again, and go back to a rich, mocha brown, with natural looking blond highlights in it. Make your hair healthy, grow out your nails, and paint them pretty, spring colors. (Mint, Emerald, pastel purple, etc.)

Hello Kitty backpacks, though I find them cute, can be viewed by others as childish, or try-hard even. Mainstream articles, such as a transport backpack, and a normal iPhone case (A Pikachu one would be considered 'scene') would help with this "transition."

music should not be all Heavy Metal and Screamo. Turn up the radio and sing along to a Katy Perry song!

And at the end of all this, I must say two things. One, I am basing this whole thing, from videos I have seen on YouTube. I don't really know what you do, or what you dress or look like. This is all based on stereotypes and I am really sorry about it, but I def wanna help a girlfriend who seeks help!

And you should also know that 'normal' is all relative.....If there was such thing as normal, this world would be very boring. I respect your decision to go 'punk/scene,' but I also do understand why you would like to 'tone things down' a bit. As you are in high school, grades are becoming A LOT more important than looks, so you don't want to do something that will make you self conscious. Be confident with who you are, and what you have got. If you have that and a smile, it will never matter what you look like!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have fun with the new you, and Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:)

Tell me how it goes!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much would it cost for my friends and I to travel around Europe?

hellothere

My friends and I thought if would be fun and a great experience to travel Europe after we graduate high school. There are about 10 of us and we will graduate in 4 years(not including the end of this school year). I was just wondering about how much we should save, if we decide to go.

Answer
The most fun way to travel around Europe is by train. Get a Europass good for however long you are going to be there. It saves time and money. You can buy them here before you leave - in fact you can't buy them in Europe. This is cheaper than any other way. There are great youth hostels - Europe is where these were invented, I think. They are far better than anything in North America. My kids and I did it that way a few years ago - and with our backpacks. It was the best trip I have ever taken. You have to plan your trip before you go. Plan on the cities you are going to visit and know where the youth hostels are in those cities before you leave. Stay in places where the price of the room includes all you can eat breakfast. Most hostels do it that way. If you buy your Europass, stay in youth hostels, use the bus/tram or subway systems(the Metro in Paris, for example is great), eat a big free breakfast, do your sightseeing and buy bread, fruit, cheese, wine then pig out in your hotel after you have finished your day. So, you don't spend much money eating in restaurants. We had a 3 week Europass, travelled from England on the hydrofoil across the English Channel to Calais and took the train into Paris and went from there. We hit 9 cities, including Florence, Amsterdam, Brussels, Saltsburg, etc. It cost me about $4000.00 for the three of us. Not including the air fare to fly my kids to London. So, if you have 4 years to save, get on it. It is the trip of a lifetime. And you will never forget it. It may be a little more expensive now. But, you can do it. Wanna go skiing in the Alps, take the cog railway up the mountain in Insbruck - glorious. Good luck.

What things are important to school-age children and teenagers?

ockissen

I'm writing an essay on lack of values in schools. I'm looking for examples. They can be materialistic, like a first grader wanting a Louis Vuitton bag or a 14-year-old who wants $160 highlights for her hair? But I would also like to know what values young people think are important. Thanks in adavance!

Answer
My 9 year old wants friends that don't suck, to be a veterinarian, to skip a grade, to get more dogs, and to play more hockey. She's a smart hockey playing dog lover, but I think generally it is all the same. Kids want what their friends have, want friends that are generally seen as cool [or interesting], and hate to be bored. The kids that have everything want more of the same [just more expensive] and the kids that have nothing mostly want the basics. My daughter hates to see other people hurt, but seems more offended by violence towards animals then violence towards people. A boy can punch another boy and she said "they had a fight". But someone kicks a dog and she will actually cry.

However my 7 year old wants her hair dyed red, and to wear pink every day. She doesn't watch commercial tv, and isn't overly spoiled or materialistic. Her favorite teachers aid has red hair and so does her favorite daycare teacher. And she happens to really like pink. But her beautiful long blond hair will never never be dyed red!!! :) I think the older kids get the more their value system goes from looking up to people in authority, to looking up to peers.

Answer
hahhaha i read this. some of them are wrong, lloll, which takes away from the funniness, but its' still cute. like for "paper" it would be "peh-paar" not "fefar". hahaha. here's a funny one too:

A is for Aapish (Office). This is where the average Kolkatan goes and
spends a day hard(ly) at work. If he is in the Government he will arrive
at 10, wipe his forehead till 11, have a tea break at 12, throw around a
few files at 12.30, break for lunch at 1, smoke an unfiltered cigarette
at 2, break for tea at 3, sleep sitting down at 4 and go home at 5. It's
a hard life!
B is for Boka. Meaning phool or eedeeot, often used with an abusive
rhyming attachment which means an absolute phool or eedeeot.
C is for Chappell. This is the Bengali word for the Devil, for the worst
form of evil. In the night mothers put their kids to sleep saying 'go to
bed, or Chappell will come and take you away.'
D is for Debashish. By an ancient law every fourth Bengali Child has to
be named Debashish. So you have a Debashish everywhere and trying to get
creative they are also called Deb, Debu, Deba with variations like
Debnath and Deboprotim thrown in.
E is for Eeesh. This is a very common Bengali exclamation made famous by
Aishwarya Rai in the movie Devdas. It is estimated that on an average a
Bengali uses eeesh 10,089 times every year. (That's counting eeesh and
other eeesh-ish words).
F is for Pheesh. These are creatures that swim in rivers and seas and
are a favourite food of the Bengalis. Despite the fact that a fish
market has such strong smells, with one sniff a Bengali knows if a fish
is all right. If not, he will say 'eeesh, what pheeesh is theeesh!'
G is for Good name. Every Bengali Boy will have a good name like
Debashish or Deboprotim and a pet name like Shontuda, Choti, Poka and
Dinku. While every Bengali Girl will be Paromita or Protima as well as
Shampa, Champa and Buri. Basically your nickname is there to kill your
good name.
H is for Harmonium. The Bengali equivalent of a rock guitar. Take four
Bengalis and a Harmonium and you have the successors to The Bheatles!
I is for lleesh. This is a pheeesh with 10,000 bones which would kill
any ordinary person, but which the Bengalis eat with releeesh!
J is for Jaamaaibabu or Jhaamelaa or Jhola. No self respecting Bengali
is complete without his Jhola. It is a shapeless cloth bag where he
keeps all his belongings and he fits an amazing number of things in.
Even as you read this there are 2 million jholas bobbling around
Kolkata- and they all look exactly the same!
K is for Kee Kaando. It used to be the favourite Bengali exclamation
till eeesh took over because of Aishwarya Rai (now Kee Kaando's agent is
trying to hire Bipasha Basu).
L is for Ludo or Lungi. People in Kolkata manage to play football and
cricket wearing it. Now there is talk of a lungi expedition to Mt.
Everest. That is when they are not playing Ludo on the "roK"
M is for Minibus. These are dangerous half buses whose antics would
effortlessly frighten the living daylights out of Formula 1 race
drivers.
N is for Nangtoe. This is the Bengali word for Naked. It is the most
interesting naked word in any language!
O is for Oil. The Bengalis believe that a touch of mustard oil will cure
anything from cold (oil in the nose), to earache (oil in the ear), to
cough (oil on the throat) to piles (oil you know where!)
P is for Potol and Pantua - the must haves on all Bong meals.
Q is for Queen. This really has nothing to do with the Bengalis or
Kolkata, but it's the only Q word I could think of at this moment.
There's also Quilt but they never use them in Kolkata.
R is for Robi Thakur. Many years ago Rabindranath got the Nobel Prize.
This allows everyone in Kolkata to frame their acceptance speeches and
walk w

I have an essay due about why we should get the school rules changed about school bags and i came up with that reasong but i need examples to help support it.

Answer
If they 'allow' this it will:

1: Save time - as students will not be constantly going to get books from a locker.

2: It will allow students to organise their bags in the morning so that all that they need is in the bag.

3: They can leave some items in their locker and carry some so their bags are not too heavy.

4: If children are taught how to carry bags/backpacks correctly on their backs then certain problems will be alleviated.

How to carry your bag correctly:
Dr. Skaggs suggests the following to alleviate back pain caused by carrying too heavy a load in a backpack:

* ALWAYS USE BOTH SHOULDER STRAPS: "It's important for children to use both shoulder straps instead of simply slinging the backpack over one shoulder," Dr. Skaggs says. "Using one strap can cause children to walk improperly and places all the load on one shoulder."

* PACK CORRECTLY: Dr. Skaggs recommends that heavier books and items be packed closest to the back so that the center of gravity is near the center of the pelvis. Secondly, he reminds children to not pack so that there are sharp comers. "A load on the shoulders will naturally cause you to lean forward," he said. "That's why it's important to distribute the weight evenly."

* SELECT THE BACKPACK THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU: "The standard two-strap backpack is good for light loads. For heavier loads, a backpack with a hip belt takes the load off of the shoulders and distributes it to the pelvis and hips," Dr. Skaggs said. Dr. Skaggs also recommends selecting a backpack that has a well padded area that touches the back and shoulders so sharp corners will not cause discomfort by sticking into the back.
