TRADITION1

Answer
Yeah, it sucks that I'm grounded. THREE WHOLE DAYS. I've literally been in sitting in dark cool basement, wearing a robe, with a tall rootbeer next to me searching the Web. I'm going insane, especially since my sister just went to the pool with all her friends. Who gets grounded for getting a D in math when they have the rest A's? I still got a 3.75! But I just have to make it through. At least I can get a head start on all my summer homework since theres nothing else to do.

I'm 15 and going into the eleventh grade. I cannot even believe that I'm going to be a junior already, it feels unreal. The funny thing is my mom still packs me a bag lunch everyday with a peanut butter sandwich, Coke, pretzel, and apples ever since first grade. I never ever get tired of it. Ever since school let out on June last week, I've basically lived at my best friend Emily's house. Literally I've slept over every night. Well, every night besides the day my report card got sent to my house lol.

I dont know what I'd do without Emily. I've known her since I was five and could basically write a book about her entire life, with quotes from her included haha. I was there at the middle school party when she got her first kiss, I got drunk for the first time at her house, I delivered the note in sixth grade to her first boyfriend that she wanted to break up. Its such a great feeling knowing you have a best friend set for your whole life, who will be there no matter what happens.

I wonder where I'll live when I'm older. I live in a small town on the East Coast, and no one really moves away. You live here for life. But my family isnt like that. We settled here in 1999 when I was five but before that my dads job in the military had us moving all over the country and even to Singapore. We moved in with my moms childhood best friend here, and then just never left. But unlike all my friends I want to get out of here. I love our town, but I know theres a lot more out there. I want to see every continent!

I guess I look like a typical 15 year old girl. I'm 5'4 and 102 pounds, with longish blonde-brown hair and blue eyes. The only remarkable thing about my appearance is my eyelashes, which are extremely long and thick. I've been hit on before, but I mostly think everyone thinks I'm more 'cute' or 'pretty' then 'hot' or 'sexy'. The only thing I've done is kiss a boy. Its not that I'm prude, but I dont like to rush into things. I dont trust boys easily. When I was little I was sexually abused, but I've never told a soul, not even Emily. Its extremely difficult to keep inside but I've done a great job of acting completely normal. While this person was hurting me, my parents were going through a divorce. They were constantly stressed and fighting and my dad had bad depression during that time. I didnt want to make everything worse. But seeing how much my parents trust the guy who did it makes me have very little faith in people. When I see him in church, praying and singing hymns with everyone else, my stomach tightens in a hard little knot. It doesnt seem fair.

Besides that I think I've had a great life. I'm kind of an eternal optimist. I cant stand to be sad and hate when people are always complaining. I've always been fairly well liked and popular. Its hard for me to be quiet. My dad once offered me $20 if I could be silent during the drive to Conneticuit but I burst like a balloon in five minutes. My mom calls it 'the gift of gab'. My dad calls it 'annoying'. He always teases me but I know he loves me more then anything. My sisters name is Sienna and she is 13. We look alike and are frequently mistaken as twins, but we act nothing alike. Our personalities are polar opposite. We bicker all the time, but there are some nice moments where we get along.

Okay I'm done...I think I'm going to emerge from the basement for a peanut butter sandwich!

What is the first day of high school like?

Q. Hey,
I'm going to be a freshman this year. I will have my best friend and about 9 or so people that I know from middle school. I'm pretty confident, but I just want some tips and advice from you fellow high schoolers.
How different is it from middle school?
What can I expect?

Answer
these are tips that i've been giving freshmen lately...
TIPS:
- don't be scared/nervous/worried... high school is not that big of a deal
- get a map of the school so you don't get lost... but don't walk around the school with it in front of your face
- don't ask upperclassmen for help if you're lost (ask a teacher or friend) cuz they might point you in the wrong direction
- don't stop in the middle of the hallways
- join clubs/sports... trust me it's an easy way to make friends and it looks good on college applications
- don't run to lunch
- don't be intimidated by upperclassmen
- don't tell your boyfriend you 'love' him in the same week you started dating him.
- on the first day don't wear you hollister shirt, hollister pants, hollister flipflops, and carrying your hollister bag... you will have freshman written all over you and don't wear too much makeup/accesories... just wear something simple but cute :) and honestly nobody gives a crap about what you wear
- it is possible to fall UP the stairs... lol. but if this (or something like this) does happen don't be embarrassed... just laugh at yourself and walk away cuz its no big deal
- please don't be an immature freshman
- make good grades (don't screw it up freshman year cuz you WILL regret it)
- don't come to school on the first day with your huge backpack full of colored pencils, glue sticks, tissue boxes... you don't need all that crap you're in high school now. all you need for the first day is paper, pencils, and a folder
- there is no pool on top of the school
- if someone offers you an elevator pass.... don't buy it!!!
- don't be the annoying kid who always cracks immature jokes in class. teachers hate that. always be nice to the teachers cuz one day when you are a senior they will help you write college reccomendation letters and you will be glad that you behaved in their class.
- don't decorate your locker (nobody at my school decorates them)
- don't start talking to random uppperclassmen like they are your best friend
- don't talk about your UPPERCLASSMEN friends cuz you can tell someone is a freshman when they say "my SENIOR friend..... blah blah blah" it doesn't matter what grade they are in! all of your friends are PEOPLE.
- don't talk about how "cool" you think you are cuz your finally in high school
- upperclassmen have other things to worry about and they could care less about freshmen.... if people do pick on you they will most likely be sophomores: they think they have the right to pick on you cuz they're not freshman anymore..... but i think if a sophomore picks on you that is pathetic cuz they are only a year older than you.
- be prepared for freshman friday!!!! nahhh i'm just kidding it doesn't exist.... and any rumors you hear are all FAKE! nothing scary happens... and high school is nothing like the movies.

good luck :)

class of 2010!

How can I improve my chances of getting a job at publix?

red riding

You can start working at publix when your 14 and since I turn 14 in April I would like to apply there. I have heard many people at school say that they want to work there this summer, so I will have alot of competition with them and others who apply. By the way I don't have to write a a resume since I'm not applying for a managing job.

Answer
First start asking i.e. teachers, guidance counselor, neighbor you babysat for or knows you for at least 2-3 years, church pastor/priest/rabbi, manager at volunteer work you performed, head of any school activities, a family adult friend etc. would they be a reference for you relative to your character i.e. dependable (show up on time), outgoing/positive attitude, conservative in appearance, serious student /good grades, ability to make friends a team player with projects, flexible etc.
Then type these references on a WORD document. The title is Personal References or if you worked or have volunteer experience then Personal and Professional References. You need i.e. full name, street address, state/city/zip code, phone # and their title. You will, when called for a interview, have this document with you which puts you one step above your competition.

Interview Attire:
Dress for Success- meaning purchase a two (2) piece matching skirt or pant suit in navy or grey, a long sleeve white blouse (not sheer), conservative polished flat or low heels, stockings in a neutral shade, a conservative hand bag, clear nail polish, neat hair style, no body piercings or tattoos, two ink pens in case one runs out of ink, one piece of jewelry a necklace or scarf. If finances are a problem then go to the Salvation Army or GoodWill.

Common Interview Questions or could be on the job application:
What do you know about Publix: Check Publix website under the categories: About Us, History etc.which could be at the bottom of the page. You can impress the interviewer with siting the date they were founded, how many employees, how many stores etc.

Example:

Founded in 1930, Publix Super Markets is the largest and fastest-growing employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States. Publix and our associates excel in community involvement, volunteerism and a commitment to our market areas and beyond.

â¢Founded by the late George W. Jenkins in 1930 in Winter Haven, Fla.
â¢Largest employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States
â¢One of the 10 largest-volume supermarket chains in the United States
â¢2010 retail sales of $25.1 billion
â¢Current employee count of more than 151,000
Store Locations
1,047 supermarkets in:

Another common question is why should be hire you?
You are a dedicated and reliable worker, love serving a diversity of customers, have shopped with family at this store, even if not true, and found the employees to be upbeat and the store clean. It would be a great opportunity to learn the food business which is a field you want to pursue i.e. nutritionist or cheaf one day.

I'm going back to school and it would be nice if I could have one of my 2 daily protein shakes at break time in school. Is there any way to keep the shake (milk with banana protein powder) from going off and warm?

Answer
How about one of those 2 drink sized soft coolers and an ice pack. It will easily fit into a backpack and a school locker. They sell them at walmart.

Which midwest chain stores are selling Pokemon backpacks these days?

Maureen

Has anyone seen them in Target? Toys R Us? K-mart? Value City? Kohls? Walmart?

I see them on e-Bay but am hoping to find them locally, to avoid the shipping charges.

Have you seen them in any local midwest stores? Thanks!

Answer
A few weeks ago, when we were back to school shopping with the kids, I saw them at TJ Maxx. I'm not sure if you have that there, but they had a pretty big selection.
Also, amazon.com has some, and their shipping rates are relatively cheap.

What are your honest opinions on South Africa?

Paul

A lot of people stereotype about the country and that sort of annoys me so I'd like to know your honest opinions.

Answer
The country is a beautiful place with lots of potential, the only problem is that the majority of people and government are uneducated, lazy, corrupt, etc. Just a few weeks ago, the Jeffreys Bay municipality went on strike, by which I mean a violent rampage. They destroyed rubbish bags and trashed our streets just because they want a raise. And what do they do all day? NOTHING! May I suggest reading the following, a "letter" to the "previously disadvantaged":

"To the Previously Disadvantage.

We are sorry that our ancestors were intelligent, advanced and
daring enough to explore the wild oceans to discover new countries
and develop them.
We are sorry that those who came before us took you out of the
bush and taught you that there was more to life than beating drums,
killing each other and chasing animals with sticks and stones.
We are sorry that they planned, funded and developed roads,
towns, mines, factories, airports and harbours, all of which you now
claim to be your long deprived inheritance giving you every right to
change and rename these at your discretion.
We are sorry that our parents taught us the value of small but
strong families, to not breed like rabbits and end up as underfed,
diseased, illiterate shack dwellers living in poverty.
We are sorry that when the evil apartheid government provided
you with schools, you decided they'd look better without windows
or in piles of ashes.
We happily gave up those bad days of getting spanked in our all
white Schools for doing something wrong, and much prefer these
days of freedom where problems can be resolved with knives and guns.
We are sorry that it is hard to shake off the bitterness of the
past when you keep on raping, torturing and killing our friends and
family members, and then hide behind the fence of 'human rights'
with smiles on your faces.
We are sorry that we do not trust the government... We have no
reason to be so suspicious because none of these poor "hard working
intellectuals" have ever been involved in any form of "corruption or
irregularities".
We are sorry that we do not trust the police force and, even
though they have openly admitted that they have lost the war against crime
and criminals, we should not be negative and just ignore their
corruption and carry on hoping for the best.
We are sorry that it is more important to you to have players of
colour in our national teams than winning games and promoting
patriotism.
We know that sponsorship doesn't depend on a team's success.
We are sorry that our border posts have been flung open and now
left you competing for jobs against illegal immigrants from our
beautiful neighbouring countries.
All of them countries that have grown into economic powerhouses
after kicking out the 'settlers'.
We are sorry that we don't believe in witchcraft, beet root and
garlic cures, urinating on street corners, virginity testing, slaughtering
of bulls in our back yards, trading women for cattle and other
barbaric practices.
Maybe we just grew up differently.
We are sorry that your medical care, water supplies, roads,
railways and electricity supplies are going down the toilet because
skilled people who could have planned for and resolved these issues
had to be thrown away because they were of the wrong ethnic
background and now have to work in foreign countries where their
skills are highly appreciated.
We are so sorry that we'd like this country to fulfil its potential so
we can once again be proud South Africans.

The Previously Advantaged."

Another thing, (know I am NOT racist), the thing is, the ANC government view all white people as racist. A beautiful example of stupidity is how Julius Malema goes on and on about how racist we are, but then he sings "Kill the boer(white man)"... That same man destroyed his R3000000 house, only to build a R16000000 with OUR tax money. I could go on and on and on and on...

So there!

Why in the world does everyone call Bono a hypocrite?

TeaganRay

I dont get it? Hes done so much and has given so much money and sent 20 million african children to school yet you go on youtube and every vid with him someone says

" bonos a do*che bag, and a hypocrite "
blah blah blah

Answer
Sadly, we live in a very jaded world that is horribly misinformed and too focused on trying to be cool. Therefore, we are plagued with folks who love to put down anyone who actually puts his action where his mouth is and gets things done.

About two years ago "South Park" (which incidentally hasn't been funny in about 10 years) did an episode that made fun of Bono for his charitable contributions and compared him to "a human piece of sh*t. So because these two drug-addicted idiots who have contributed nothing to the planet except fart jokes and the "Uncle F*cker" song took it upon themselves to criticize an entertainer far more talented than the two of them for doing far more than either one of them has accomplished. And every sheep in this nation followed along with the criticism of one of the world's greatest philanthropists.

Truth be told, Bono is probably the most genuine, open-hearted and down-to-earth celebrities that are currently in existence. If Bono had told the world to save Africa while doing nothing himself, I'd be the first to say he was a douche for what he was doing. I can't stand it anymore than anyone else when a celebrity jumps onto a cause for the publicity. Bono has changed things so much in Africa by raising the level of awareness in this world. He has spoken with presidents, Popes, billionaire business tycoons, religious leaders and politicians to rally support behind his cause. He has done for Africa what no other person with his influence has done.

My advice is to ignore them. U2 has millions of fans and Bono is still one of the more well-respected people on the planet. The minority of nay-sayers are sadly a very vocal group. It makes them feel better about their own pathetic existence for a life when they criticize someone who has actually done something worthwhile.

Q. give my avatar a past, present and future......
what does it mean to be willowy exactly?

Answer
OK here goes - don't get mad now. You did ask for it.

Past - Totally pink bedroom. 250 stuffed animals on the bed. Each one had an adorable name and you made your father kiss each one of them good night every night (after reading Cinderella five times!) so you could avoid going to sleep. A precocious child, you used to wear your favorite Disney Princess costumes to pre school. Carried a Barbie lunchbox to first grade and by third grade graduated to Bratz. HUGE Full House fan. Wanted to be just like DJ when you grew up. Knew all the words to the score of Pocahontas. Sang Colors of the Wind at your Elementary School Graduation. Your mother cried.

Present - Redecorated your bedroom - now 60's retro with shag carpeting and the essential lava lamp and bead curtain on the door. Threw hissies every night for a month until you got your own phone and computer hookup in your bedroom. And then you talked the folks into the cell phone - properly bling covered just like Paris's. Middle school Princess O Prep. Never go anywhere without at least one Lisi Harrison book in your backpack. Know all the disses by heart and use them liberally to the amusement of your own clique. Madly in love with this kid in your Social Studies class who looks just like Zac Efron. He is like so hot! Favorite stores- The Gap and Old Navy. Your mother named you Claire after the Molly Ringwald character in The Breakfast Club - her absolute favorite movie ever. Thinking about getting a tongue piercing. They look so cool. Spent the summer on this boring vacation with your parents in Disneyworld listening to your two younger sibs fight. When you come home, you are heartbroken to learn that the guy in your Social Studies class has moved to California with his parents. Your grades suffer severely due to the depression.

Future - After college, you move to New York and pursue a career in the fashion industry - landing your dream job as Calvin Klein's personal assistant. What the job entails is going to Starbucks twice a day to get Calvin a double mocha latte - skim milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a blueberry muffin. He only eats the tops. You feed the bottoms to the pigeons in Central Park on your way home to your fabulous studio apartment after work. You become his muse and his 2012 collection is called The Claire Look. Pretty in Pink. At Fashion Week, you happen to run into the real Zac Efron who is now working as a house painter in upstate NY (all former child stars end up as house painters). You fall madly in love and move to a little town just outside Buffalo. Your first winter there, it snows 17 feet and you lose Zac when he slips off a ladder while clearing snow off the roof and dies in the resulting avalanche. Luckily he is insured. You buy a brand new Ford Edge (Blazing Copper - just like Derek Jeter's) and move to Florida where you get a job playing Sleeping Beauty at Disneyworld. You end up married to the guy named Howard Astaire who plays Captain Hook. Your name is now Claire Astaire and you have two kids - twin boys you name Chip and Dale.

That should about cover it. Enjoy your new life. Pax - C

Will I get in Appalachian State University?

sarah

Sorry if this may be kind of long but anyway. So I started high school at the local public high school. I got all As my freshman year, did varsity cross country, varsity track and varsity soccer. Sophomore year I got all As with two B's. One B in math and one B in Spanish. I did Varsity cross country, varsity track, varsity soccer and travel soccer outside of school. I was also inducted into the beat club. For my junior year my parents felt the public high school was too easy and wasn't challenging me enough. So for my junior year I'm attending the local private prep school. My parents had me tested half way through this year (my junior year) and found out I have dyslexia and dyscalculus (meaning my mind can't do math high then algebra 1). Which it wasn't a big shocker or anything, we kind of figured. My junior year has been kind of a struggle. With trying to do Allegra 2, chemistry with all the math in it, being the new kid again, and going to a very difficult prep school where most of the kids IQs are 150. The school year isn't over yet but so far i have one high A in photography, and all very low Bs in everything else. Meaning it's about an 80 or 79.7 in the rest of my classes. I'm currently doing online math so i can go at my own pace and i have a tutor for chemistry that I see at least three times a week. But it's still a struggle to understand things. I've only taken the SAT once and I didn't really study much and I got a 1310. I took the ACT recently but I haven't gotten my scores back yet. I did travel soccer outside of school this year, I'm on the school sailing team, I'm on the varsity soccer team and co-captain, and I plan to do cross country my senior year along with varsity soccer. This year has just been very difficult for me and my school obviously is a lot harder then most other schools. But I went to a private catholic school my whole life before i started high school. I also do a summer camp that's not like most camps. It's called adventure treks and it's a outdoor leadership camp for teens my age. Where we go backpacking, raft, rock climb, kayak, climb mountains while learning skills and leadership skills. I really want to go to App state. I visited and I feel like it'd fit me great. Do you think I have a chance of getting in?

Notes: I live out of state in Georgia
I'm currently a junior in high school

Answer
Maybe, maybe not. My nephew was in kind of the same situation, he didn't get in at first and he went to community college and then got in for his junior year - he's there now. Transfer is more flexible on grades.

You should know that any change of school like that, right in the middle of your time in high school can be quite jarring, and it's usually not a wise idea to do that because grades suffer. It's hard on teens to make switches like that, and while your parents had your best interests at heart, getting good grades is a sign that things are good, not that they are too easy, so I don't agree with what they did People often don't realize that sometimes the best thing is to stay.

All I can say is that you might want to consider taking time to work on your academics this summer, and make a strong showing your senior year. Hopefully you'll have grades to show when you apply that can counteract your junior year. It's a shame because junior year tends to be the more important year, coming down to the finish line so to speak. App is one of the top Southern schools, and it's competitive - you may have a harder time getting in as a freshman but as my nephew has proven, it can be done later.

You should go to their site and review - here's part of it, this is what the last incoming class looked like grade-wise - and check the links below on freshmen students and transfer students criteria.
2012 Freshman Class Profile
Average weighted GPA of 3.99
Average SAT of 1153 (combination of math & verbal)
Average ACT of 26 composite

I've posted this before, but I deleted it by accident. Here's an extract of my story, honest feedback please. I'm 13 years old.
---

1
There are things that I will miss about our damp flat in Glasgow.
I'll miss when the electricity went off and we had to huddle together on the sofa, shivering under a moth-eaten blanket that Dad tugged out of the hall cupboard. I'll miss my cosy pink bedroom, with the squeaky floorboards and the window looking out onto Clyde Park. I'll miss the smell of sweet scented candles, apple and blueberry and orange and cherry. I'll miss winter, when me and Dad sipped lukewarm hot chocolate speckled with fluffy pink marshmallows, and talked and talked and talked. I'd moan about Amy McWinter and Miss Elberry and homework and tests. Dad would moan about the rent and the landlord and the envelopes that were pushed through the letterbox every morning, filled with rows of black printed numbers.
There are also a lot of things that I won't miss.
Like the batty old man who lived downstairs, and always used to bang on our door and shout that we were playing music too loudly, at 2 o' clock in the morning when we were fast asleep. I won't miss Clyde High School... or Amy McWinter.
Every class has a popular girl, right? Well Amy was probably the most popular person in the whole school. Even the teachers simpered over her. She had glossy blonde hair, with a neatly trimmed block fringe. The kind I'd always wanted to have, shiny and neat. She was effortlessly pretty, with big blue eyes and long eyelashes and pale white skin. She never got a spot or a pimple or any blemish at all. Amy McWinter reminded me of a perfect Barbie doll.
She wasn't pretty inside, though. She was horrid horrid horrid.
I didn't get good marks, simply because of her. I was at the very bottom of the class. She prodded her sharp plastic ruler right into my back, she'd kick my chair so I couldn't concentrate, she'd mumble cruel words into my back. She'd pick on me in the playground too, laughing at my shoes, my bag, my second-hand school uniform, my haircut.
That's why I pushed her.
Amy was saying stuff about my mum. Horrible stuff, that made my cheeks burn and my eyes prickle with tears. She was standing at the top of the staircase, the big one that spiralled round and round and round, like one of those big green slides you get a fairground.
'No wonder she killed herself,' Amy hissed, her eyes shining. 'Having you for a daughter.'
'She didn't kill herself,' I said uncertainly, not quite believing it
myself. 'She left. She ran away. She'll still alive somewhere, probably living it up in a fabulous lifestyle as an actress, with a great big mansion
and...'
'We all know you're a little liar,' Amy snorted. 'A mansion! Yeah, right. If she's alive, which I doubt, she's probably sleeping in a doorway somewhere, begging for spare change.'
'She was a writer,' I lied, having one last attempt. 'So she'll probably be in a caravan, somewhere, because she told me she has to travel a lot. A really nice one, with a double bedroom and a bathroom and a living room and a...'
'Double bedroom?' Amy demanded. 'Why would she need that? It isn't like she's asked you to stay with her, sleep for a night. Is it?'
'She doesn't know our address. We've moved heaps and heaps of times. We've travelled all around the world, in fact,' I said lightly, shrugging slightly. 'She probably thinks about me every day, longs to see me, but can't because she...'
'That's rubbish,' Amy suddenly cries, taking a step towards me. I flinched, even though I knew she wouldn't actually physically hurt me. I could beat her in a fight, easy. I was small and skinny but I certainly knew how to punch and kick.
Amy continued, her words sharper than any hit she could give me. 'You live in that minging council flat, near the Kiosk, with mould on the windows and those big leafy vines climbing up the bricks. You've lived there since you were a baby, since she left. Of course she knows your address! She just can't be bothered. Doesn't want you, obviously. But who would? Not me, not anyone. Especially not her...'
It was then when I lost it.
She was on the top staircase, her fingers resting loosely on the banister. It only took one sharp push to get her flying down the stairs, shrieking and screaming, landing with a bump on the polished marble floor.
I looked down at her, sprawled across the floor, missing one Rocket Dog pump, her golden hair webbed across her face. One hand was outstretched, her fingers clenched into a fist. I waited for her to get up, to yell, to get me in trouble. But she didn't. She remained still, her face pale, her eyes closed, as if she was in a peaceful sleep.
I screamed.

--
THIS
Thanks to the people who said it was good (: x

& yeah, I suppose the floor wouldn't be marble. I don't really know why I put that. I'll changed it to "the polished wooden floorboards".
to the person that sent me a link to buy a barbie doll... WHAT?!

& to the person that said they didn't see the main character's name being mentioned... it wasn't. It's mentioned first thing in the second chapter though. It's Cherry.

Answer
wow, for 13 this is pretty dam good. I couldn't write like this at 13.

Anyway, onto the feedback. I agree with Shadow and Britt. There are a few grammar errors and I think (like me! lol) that you like to over use commas. Don't worry about it though. Just re-read what you've got and i'm sure you'll pick up when to take away a few commas. Just read it out loud and you'll see them =)
Also, the beginning seems to go for a bit too long? It doesn't really add a whole heap to the story. Maybe you could shorten it down and what you don't use, add in to the next scene or something.

I gotta say, I hate that Amy McWinter girl. She's so mean >< !! Oh and speaking of, skimming back over this I don't remember the Main Character's name being mentioned. Or maybe I just didn't skim hard enough lol

My last little thing I gotta say is get rid of the I screamed bit, or add a bit more into it.
She remained still, her face pale, her eyes closed, as if she was in a peaceful sleep. I couldn't help the scream that forced its way out.

Hmm, that was longer than what I thought it would be haha. But don't think that this is bad at all. I really liked it. Keep up the awesome work =)

Is she a FRIEND or just using me?

I have this friend, and we have been quite close the past year or so we've known each other,i mean,we do Everything together, but I seem to always do stuff for her,and she never does anything for me,so,this week,we have been staying at each others like, swapping back and forth, but she keeps saying some really insulting things, for instance,I'll describe today

"She phoned me up at 7.30 and says,do you want to go out,and i says, can i phone you back,im just awake, and she kind of went in a huff,so anyway,we got to glasgow about 2.00 to get our school stuff,so,we were goin in an out of shops and stuff, and abbout 3.30 we went for lunch, and i had bought my subway(six inch roll, medium drink, and saved my cookie for on he way home)she picked up my roll and i said, what are you doing?and she says,oh,i just want to try it,and i said ok on you go,and she ate half of it(after eating her lunch the exact same as what i had ordered)so it kind of annoyed me because i hadnt eaten, but anyway,i had almost everything for school i needed and then she told me she didnt have ANYTHING(we'd been shoppin for over an hour and a half!)so,we went into various shops and i helped her pick out what she needed, then she said at 6.00,i dont like any of this, took it all back and started again(sooo embarassing)so the place shut at 6.30,and we were on the train, and i had to use the bathroom(yes lol,a toilet on a train, eeeew),i came back and was hungry,so i reached into my bag for my cookie, and there was only half there, and she says,oh,i was kinda hungry,so i just took half your cookie, but oh well, thats was today??

so,i have been stayin at hers this week, and i made dinner for her and her family,i tidied her room and her house,i walked her dog and so on,but then sitting in my house,my niece(1 an 1/2) and two of my sisters were in and she says"your niece is crazy i couldnt live with 'THAT' " and then my brother came in,an they were havin a couple of drinks and she sayss, your family is soo loud,i couldnt live with them(infront of them).then we were walking down to the shops and she phoned her dad to come and get her and just left me walking to the shops on my own(10.00 at night :( )she didnt even say bye :(

My sisters and my mum says that i shouldnt hang about with her because she's just walking over the top of me and using me,but,i ont know if i can,i dont want to just say "im not your friend blah blah blah..."because i dont want to upset her,so, how can i tell the way i feel, without having to not be friends(stupid way of putting it)and what would you do,do you think she's worth the worry and upset???(because it is upsetting me)

answers are very appreciated(honest ones that is) xxxxxx

Answer
Unfortunatley there are givers and takers in this world, and the givers tend to get walked all over and dont stop getting walked over until youve finally had enough but you cant help it because its in you. (im the same and I never learn by my mistakes even though i say i will change next time but because its in me to help and give I cant stop it and always go back giving. But if i ever need help, I cant even ask for it but even if they know i need some help with something nobody offers and then i get upset and feel totally used, because I dont wait to be asked to help people, I just offer beforehand.) But you do need to be honest with her and tell her because it will carry on and youll end up exploding and probably falling out altogether.

I think you need to say to her that you have been seeing alot of each other lately and feel that you value her friendship very much but you feel that she is taking advantage of you and now its upsetting you and its come to the stage that you feel you need to say something. Then give her some examples of what she is doing and see what she says.

Its hard but in my experience as soon as i start saying no and not giving in, usually they dont want to know anymore and then that makes me feel even more used. So try to start as you mean to go on when making friends because it can make you feel really down, im in my 30's and I finally put my foot down with a friend last week and I havent heard from her since and im now at the stage where i actually dont want any more friends because they always seem to let you down, one way or another however I know its partly my fault for not being stronger, but myself and my husband are the same. (i guess thats one reason why i love him so much).

Good luck, I hope she takes what you say - you need to say it because it will only carry on and then i hopes she starts thinking about you more.

What are the "must see" locations in New York City?

We are a family of 4 (with two high school age kids) and will visit New York City in April. There are too many things to see in few days we are there so.... What would be the top 6 "must sees" ?

Answer
Do not take notice of what `the one` wrote. we went to NYC last May on holiday fro UK and LOVED it. we were lucky enough to go for 7 days, so could take our time seeing everything.
I would recommend you buy tickets for the open top hop on hop off bus tours, the blue is the one we used and found it to be fantastic. we went on the uptown tour first (not a lot to see though, so if your short on time, you could skip this part), the downtown tour is better, we hopped off at china town and did a bit of shopping, then hopped back on again, went down towards wall street, saw WTC site, then round to see the wall street bull, hop off for something to eat and back on the bus for the nighttime tour. the nighttime tour is one of the most fabulous tours to see in NYC, you will go on the bus and it goes across the Brooklyn bridge to Brooklyn and in the dark, you'll see the necklace of lower manhattan lit up. beautiful trip, freezing cold one but beautiful.
the next day, you could spend shopping, a trip to Woodbury commons is well worth it, we got the bus from Port Authority to it, it is an outlet mall a wee bit out of NYC, but it has great shops, GAP, armani exchange, banana republic, Nike, Etc we spend 3/4 of our budget here, then once you have dumped your bags in the hotel, a walk up 5th avenue from empire state building to the park is a good trip too (only if you enjoy shopping though)at night go up the empire state building, as we would always recommend doing it at night.
The next day, go on the TV and Movie tour, this is a great trip and a good day out, you'll see where films like wall street, bride wars, miss congeniality were made, as well as programmes like friends, cosby show, etc. whilst it is still light go up the rockerfella centre, as this is an amazing sight.
if you have time, you really, really need to see Grand Central Terminal, it is a beautiful building.

One place I would NOT recommend you visit is Madamme Tussauds, this was NOT worth the money or the time, when your in a fab place like NYC, your time is precious and this place is a waste of time. We did walk through Central park, but you'll need a whole day to walk round it all, so again if your short of time, I'd skim past it, just to see it.

A trip to Statue of Liberty is one of the most wonderful experiences ever, I went there on my 40th birthday, and it was very emotional, she truly is beautiful, but again it's something you could do without going over to if your short of time, but I'd certainly go on a boat around it to see it up close.

Hope you all enjoy your time in NYC

What are the "cool kids" wearing in high school?

Killer Bar

All I really see is Ralph Lauren. And sporty stuff. What are they wearing?

Answer
Fitting in is so out. All the cool kids in my school dress like twins everyday with their cliche clique. I usually just wear floral dresses, Hollister jeans, Coach bags, and I go to h&m, Betsey Johnson, and Nordstorms. A lot of kids in my school think wearing Nike slides, basketball shorts, and Aero graphic tees and mix matched socks is the coolest thing ever. I go to Lacoste sometimes but all I have to say is dress modest and have some sense in style.

What are the typical bags for high school students?

So I'm incoming 9th grader this year, and I just moved to the States from another country so I have no idea what it's like in high school here. Do most freshmen girls use jansport backpacks? Or totes? Also, if you can suggest what would be a great bag (convenient, enough space & something that can match most outfits) please indicate them in your answers below. :D Thank you!

Answer
So most girls will use either regular convetional looking nylon backbacks:
http://store.americanapparel.ca/rsanc501.html?cid=49-752&c=Red%20/%20Silver

Some other girls will prefer the trend that has been present for the past and current years, which is the canvas backpack (it has a bit of an army look):
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=22836589&parentid=WOMENS_ACCESSORIES

As you said, a lot of girls like the regular Jansport bags like these ones:
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=25113630&parentid=WOMENS_ACCESSORIES

Another alternative is the messenger bag, which is quite popular for guys and girls (although I personnaly prefer this style for guys):
http://www.longchamphandbagsonline.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=298

If you're more of a "girly girl", weekender bags are quite in style too (maybe not exactly this one because the pattern is quite flashy and it wouldn't match every outfit, but it was the best example I could find):
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=24296063&parentid=WOMENS_ACCESSORIES

I personally own a "canvas" backpack and it matches every outfit I wear because I have quite a "hipster" (a mix of indie-granola-vintage-army) style. If you're not much of a hiptser, I would consider for you getting either a plain bag (like the first option), a jansport bag or simply a weekender.

Hope this helps! Good luck in high school! :D

I'm in high school. And so I wake up around 6 in the morning on weekdays and 8 on weekends. I don't take naps, or drink coffee. I drink a lot of Mountain Dew but that doesn't effect my energy at all. I wake up at 6 or 8(sometimes later) and go on with my day. I get back in bed around 8 or 9 at night, and stay up till 2, 3, or 4 in the morning. I have terrible bags under my eyes. I'm guessing its cause I stay up on Tumblr all night? But I don't know... So yeah. Answers?

i need to lose weight it is important?

Babygirl

i really want to lose weight because i have always been teased for being fat and i would love to lose weight before school starts so there is one less thing i can be teased for.
does anyone know any web sites for excises or diets i can do.
also nothing where people will see me so no gyms or anything out side cause i live in town near lots of people.

Answer
good thing to do while trying to lose weight is get pictures of girls with body types most like yours and bigger and print them out and pics of ur favorite fatting foods and drinks and print them out then find pics of bodies you would like to have and skinner and print them out then cut and tape on wall have ur foods and the fat bodies on one side the like a few inches over put the skinny bodies. so everytime you look at it you know if you eat that or drink that you will always look like that or get even fatter. i did this and lost lots of weight but i was looking at stuff like this all day. i had it as my desktop even. and i liked looking up thinsperation quotes like on tumblr or other blog sites. and the easiest way to stop eating them is to test your will power. for me my weakness was chips so what i did was bought a small bag open them up and left them on my night stand all day and i didnt eat them, they were there and i wanted to but i knew if i could do that then im hopeless. i started only eating small meals instead of three large meals and snacking in between. i eat probably 5 small meals a day. when i say small though i mean small like 190 calories or less besides dinner which i do not count calories for but i still do not eat to where it will stretch my stomach. you never want to eat until it hurts because that pain is actually your stomach stretching. and i also take the red bottle of zantrex 3 i take two pills when i wake up and two pills with my dinner and that helps alot since it is a fat burning pill. and if you do not like people youtube has alot of great work out videos. i will send a link to my fav.

A friend of mine is having a baby next month, and I wanted to get a very plain, unmarked backpack (preferably pink or lavender) that is toddler sized. I want to stencil my own design on it. I use acrylic paint and a textile medium in my stencils, so it has to be canvas-like in texture (not windbreaker type material, as the paint will probably chip off). I've been looking everywhere, and can't seem to find what I need. Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know where I can find a free sewing/quilting pattern for a backpack for teenagers?

Nancy M

I want to quilt/sew a full size backpack for our kids school--not the little kiddie size ones that are for younger children.

Answer
Wild Ginger has a software program that is free called "Wild Things" - you tell it how big you want and it prints pattern pieces on your printer - you just tape them together. There is a backpack with a flap, as well as a zippered messenger bag, called a shoulder bag on their descriptions. I've used this program to make matchy halloween bags. I'm just a satisfied dedicated customer - no affiliation...

I did a search for "backpack" on craftster.org, and got like 20 pages of homemade backpacks that people have made there. I think what might be most helpful for you might be the messenger bag tutorials below, with double straps instead of one - the straps would attach at the top and bottom. It is not that hard to do and doesn't require a pattern.

Whats in fashion for a 13 year old boy?

school bags diesel image
Q. Would like to know whats in fashion for the 2009 back to school year for a 13 year old boy from pants to shirts and especially "SHOES"? Pics and websites would be very helpful so I can get ideas. Thanks so much!

Answer
RULE: Don't wear logos OR too many graphics. If you have a wardrobe of 13 shirts, only keep one or two.
Shirts: V-necks, dressy button-ups shirts, polos, plaid shirts, sweaters.
Pants: Straight-leg/ cigarette pants [not to tight, not too loose] in grey, distressed, weathered, blue, and black.
Shoes: Sperry Topsiders, moccassins, Pumas, leather oxfords, Italian if you can get them. Also Converse in several colours, and Vans slipons and laceups. Don't for get TOMS.
Jackets: Felt peacoats for winter, in black. Blazers and hoodies are good too.
Accessories: Ties, leather belts and bags, fedora hats, scarves tied in a kelly knot.
Hair: Keep it medium to short, and messy. No highlights. Darker is preferred.
The point is to look neat, but not too neat. Make sure everything fits you well, but not too tight. It also make you look classier, and more refined. People really go for that, it catches their eye. Make sure that what you get, it's good quality. Better to get 1 of something of good quality that 10 of something cheap. Keep a nice wallet too. Get scarves in every material.
Great places to go:
Zappos for shoes
JCrew
Abercrombie
Diesel[jeans]
Ralph Lauren Polo
Ralph Lauren Rugby
Pacsun
American Apparel
Urban Outfitters
Fred Perry

how can i build more muscle on my legs?

Q. all i have at my house is a thigh builder but that is only for girls. i go jogging on my spare time but i want to have more muscle and strenth in my legs so i could be stronger in my sophmore year in wrestling. so tell me.

Answer
My son was a state high school wrestling champion, so I've taken an interest in your question. You are right that strong legs are important to wrestling.

Lunges are good for strengthening legs and simulate body movement when doing take-downs, so they are very good movement for wrestlers. I recommend several types of lunges:
Regular: http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Quadriceps/DBLunge.html
Rear: http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Quadriceps/DBRearLunge.html
Side: http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Quadriceps/DBSideLunge.html

Hold something heavy to increase the difficulty as you get stronger or you won't continue to improve.

Most people associate leg strength with the quads (front of legs). But the back of the legs, known as the hamstrings or leg biceps are even more important for sports, as well as the butt, and low back.

If you do lunges in the different ways shown in the videos you will work the quads and hamstrings and butt.

To hit the low back muscles and give the butt and hamstrings some extra work do back extensions. They can be done on a picnic bench or table with a partner holding your legs.
http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/ErectorSpinae/BBBackExtension.html

Here is a good general exercise link if you don't have access to a gym. http://www.weighttrainersunited.com/getinshape.html

Try to get a heavy bag or two of sand. You can lift it to practice wrestling moves. If you lift it in different ways and carry it, it is a great strength builder and conditioner.

Find an old canvas bag, put a plastic garbage bag inside and fill it with sand. Keep adding sand as you get stronger. Start with 50lb, then increase to 70lb, then 100 lb+

How can students being aloud to carry school bags around school help them stay more organized?

mellyk96

I have an essay due about why we should get the school rules changed about school bags and i came up with that reasong but i need examples to help support it.

Answer
If they 'allow' this it will:

1: Save time - as students will not be constantly going to get books from a locker.

2: It will allow students to organise their bags in the morning so that all that they need is in the bag.

3: They can leave some items in their locker and carry some so their bags are not too heavy.

4: If children are taught how to carry bags/backpacks correctly on their backs then certain problems will be alleviated.

How to carry your bag correctly:
Dr. Skaggs suggests the following to alleviate back pain caused by carrying too heavy a load in a backpack:

* ALWAYS USE BOTH SHOULDER STRAPS: "It's important for children to use both shoulder straps instead of simply slinging the backpack over one shoulder," Dr. Skaggs says. "Using one strap can cause children to walk improperly and places all the load on one shoulder."

* PACK CORRECTLY: Dr. Skaggs recommends that heavier books and items be packed closest to the back so that the center of gravity is near the center of the pelvis. Secondly, he reminds children to not pack so that there are sharp comers. "A load on the shoulders will naturally cause you to lean forward," he said. "That's why it's important to distribute the weight evenly."

* SELECT THE BACKPACK THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU: "The standard two-strap backpack is good for light loads. For heavier loads, a backpack with a hip belt takes the load off of the shoulders and distributes it to the pelvis and hips," Dr. Skaggs said. Dr. Skaggs also recommends selecting a backpack that has a well padded area that touches the back and shoulders so sharp corners will not cause discomfort by sticking into the back.

Is there some sort of vegetarian high school lunch packing website?

Forlimes

This school year I intend on packing lunches with a friend every night for the next school day. We are both vegetarian and will probably be using lunch boxes instead of brown bags so as not to be wasteful. Since we will have lunch boxes, we will be able to include ice packs. The cafeteria also has a microwave for student use. We just need a website that could help us with meal ideas for about 20 or so meals.

Answer
This website has way over 20 ideas for your school lunches. Some are for hot lunches, others for cold, and others it doesn't matter. I hope this helps, and good job for sticking with being a vegetarian. I know its tough. At first its just ideas for foods but scroll down a little and there is a huge list.

School lunch box for teenager prone to teasing?

Q. According to Mom, I must carry a lunch box to school now since recently my portable yogurt smoothie exploded on all my books. I personally like the old-fashioned metal cartoon ones, but at my school if it's too uncommon and juvenile they think you're doing it for attention. And unfortunately I am not among the most highly respected.

what is most used language in the world?

Answer
Everyone who says "Chinese" or "Mandarin" is wrong.

Mandarin has more native speakers than any other language, but it is not widely learned as a second language.

ENGLISH is the most USED language in world because when you count both native speakers and speakers who learn it as a second or third language, it is far and away the most USED language in the world.

The banking industry and the air travel industry use English almost exclusively. You walk into the airport in Kjiv, Ukraine and all the signs are in Ukrainian and ENGLISH. English is the official second language of Ukraine even. English is the official language of India and everyone there learns it as a second language, as well as throughout much of Africa.

ENGLISH is the most USED language in the world.

Edit for Brian Q. You are wrong still. Mandarin is NOT the most used language. Go to any airport in the world and you will read only the local language with ENGLISH. Go to any bank in the world and you will read only the local language and ENGLISH. You'll never hear a word of Mandarin spoken on the streets of Nairobi, Kyiv, New Delhi, or Lagos. You WILL hear English spoken quite often. When I purchased a Ukrainian translation of "The Lord of the Rings", the plastic bag it was placed in by the store clerk was all in English. Every taxi driver in Kyiv knows a little English and not a word of Mandarin. I have purchased DVDs on both sides of the Atlantic. They ALL have English language options. NONE of them have Mandarin language options. Get your facts straight. Mandarin has the most native speakers--no argument here--but Mandarin is NOT the most used language in the world. I really doubt your research skills when you claim that NORWEGIAN could be in the list of number one most used languages. Get off the drugs. Get some psychological help.

FURTHER EDIT: I continue to be amazed at how many people post answers on Yahoo! Answers who don't know a thing about what they are talking about. Spanish? When's the last time you heard Spanish in any country outside the Americas or Spain? Never. And, of course, I am still laughing at "Norwegian".

Look at the facts, people. It's English. Go anywhere in the world and you can find an English speaker. Go to Kathmandu and try to find someone who speaks Norwegian. Go to Harare and try to find anyone who speaks Mandarin. Go to Dnipropetrovsk and try to find any who speaks Spanish. Yet in all these cities you'll find English being taught in the public schools as either a required or a strongly suggested second language.

Yes, you can but it's a little complicated.

I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly a lot with my three children, often on United since they were small.

Here are the relevant pages on United's site;

http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1032,00.html

http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1051,00.html

No need to stuff your purse into your diaper bag. The purse is allowed as a "personal item" over the carry-on limit. I recommend that you take a *very* small purse that can hang around your neck. Put your wallet, cell phone, etc. in that and then use an oversized backpack instead of a diaper bag. One size bigger than the standard sized backpacks still meet the airline's requirements and this way, your hands are free. I have one with a handle on the top so I can carry it either way, and hang it off the stroller.

In addition to the stroller, which will not count against your baggage allowance, make sure to have a *good* baby carrier. I don't recommend front packs like the Bjorn. Hopefully you have something more useful and comfortable so that you're not one of the many parents I saw in my career trying to get off the plane with a sleeping child over their shoulder. The carrier will not count against your carry-on allowance. These are so great because wraps, slings and pouchs also serve as blankets, sun covers and baby changers.

Just a reminder to not have your baby in the carrier for take-off and landing. It's safer if the child is loose in your lap and not attached to you in any way.

Try to not bring anything on board which is not related to you and your baby. It's not easy and you'll have enough with the baby.

I do recommend that you find out how full your flight is and see if you can bring your car seat on board and use it. Not only will your baby be safer but this is much more comfortable for both of you. This too, shouldn't count against your baggage allowance. If you need a car seat at your destination, it really shouldn't be checked as luggage where it can be lost and/or broken in the hold. Having it on board guarentees that it will be at your detination and if you are not successful, the car seat will be "gate-checked" at the aircraft door, which is gentlier and more sure than checking it in as baggage.

When you check-in, ask about any empty seats and ask if they can "block" one next to you, to use your car seat in. Be nice as this is a big favor!

Actually, I've found that if you have an extra item, they're usually understanding at check-in as a general rule when they see you are flying with a small child or baby (or two or three as is my case). Just be nice and answer all questions. Don't hide anything or lie, but don't volunteer any information (i.e. "Can I bring this extra bag on board??") Even if they saw it, if a supervisor isn't around and didn't hear you ask something like that, you should be okay...

For more information, I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. I go more into detail on all related topics, as well as the question of transporting the car seat through the airport. It's totally non-commercial and other parents have contributed;

Flying with an infant...long trip. Any tips or tricks from others?

Xanadu

And "don't" is not a tip or a trick...it's an opinion.

Can we bring a stroller on the plane?

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant. I fly with my kids long haul about twice a year, since each was 4 months old plus other flights.

First of all, the stroller; you will get a "gate-check" tag put on it when you check in. While they'll take your other bags, you get to keep your stroller. If you have a car seat with you, do NOT check it as luggage. Throw it on your stroller and either use it on board or check it at the gate with the stroller. Car seats are often lost and/or broken in transit and you never should use a rental car company seat (old, dirty, yukky, missing parts, wrong size, need I go on??) Take your own, but don't check it!

Actually, using the car seat on board is the only way to fly safely with a baby. But air travel itself is so safe, there is little chance of anything going wrong. If you have your car seat on board, ask nicely at check-in if you can get an extra seat for the car seat if you didn't buy a seat for your baby. They often do this for families but be nice! It's a big favor.

Bring your gang to through security and push the stroller (with perhaps the car seat) to the gate. When you get to the door of the plane, pop the baby into your baby carrier (a must for traveling with your baby!) and fold the stroller. Bring a bungee cord to double secure it because it can get damaged if it pops open en route. Don't make some baggage guy try to refold your stroller. Most only have flimsy latches so bind the bungee cord around it, bag it if you want (good idea if it's raining) and leave it at the door of the plane, with the tag showing.

When you check-in, be sure to ask about how your stroller will be returned to you. Most put them at the jetway or air stairs as you left them when you arrive. Some make you go to baggage claim (remember the baby carrier!) If it's a big plane, they'll use more than one exit door so ask which one has the strollers. If you go out the wrong door, you might have a long walk back to retrieve it.

Bring extra clothes and consider dressing him in a sleep suit. More comfortable and easier to pack! Pack about 1/3 more diapers than he usually needs in that period of time. Some parents like "nighttime" diapers for travel, to reduce changes. Lots of diaper cream!! Wrap bulky diapers and clothes in plastic bags and bind with rubber bands to give you more space in your diaper bag.

Use a backpack as a diaper bag so that you can keep your hands free. I even skip a purse and put a little bag with the essentials around my neck. The diaper bag doubles as my purse for the rest.

On board, if you brought the car seat, the baby must be in it for take-off and landing but you can hold him at most other times. If you don't manage it, make sure he's loose in your lap during those times and not attached to you in any way (if he's in the baby carrier, just unhook it). Don't worry about his ears. It's a myth that they have to suck on something during take-off and landing. The AAP simply suggests that the baby be awake at the top of descent (landing is too late). I took my children to the doctor's before flying (just scheduled a well-baby visit this way) and had their ears checked. Healthy ears can handle pressurization changes. I never do anything and my kids have always been fine during those times.

Since you didn't mention the baby's age, I wont talk about food and entertainment. I did write an article about 9 years ago, going into more detail on all aspects of flying with children, which goes into detail on these subjects too. It's totally non-commercial (no ads even) and parents from around the world have contributed. It's appeared on several websites but this is the latest version;

school bags for year 9 image
Q. Hey guys:) I'm 13 and I'll be going to 9th grade in August. I was wondering, what are the school bag styles this year? A few years ago it was tote (which made my shoulder ache like hell!) So what is it this year? Chunky backpacks? Knapsacks? Antiques? Canvases? Also provide links of brands if you can. Thank You!

Answer
They have these bags they are like backpacks but they close at the top at Hollister and
Abercrombie and Fitch they are really cute an I HATE the totes I've never had one but they look like they would hurt a lot to have one.

Where can i find a really nice bag for school?

Q. I am going into year 9 and i really can not find a nice bag for school?

Please help!!

Answer
ok ignore those who say Coach or Dooney and Burke. It's just going to get messed up so why spend the money. I would go to American Eagle. I got 3 bags from there a few weeks ago and they're super cute. If those dont work, just check out some stores that carry purses or messenger bags. Those always work. have fun as a fish.

Do I need to go overseas for a USA med school interview?

H.Quek

Hi! I'm from Singapore, and I'm wondering if I can use AMCAS to apply for admission to a medical school in the USA.
If I get called up for an interview by one of the med schools I applied for, would I need to pack my bag and go overseas, even if I would stand a chance of being rejected?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Schools that require an interview will often have either foreign offices or be willing to set you up with a local alumnus that you could interview with instead of traveling to the school for an interview. If you do have to travel to the school, ask them about travel arrangements, there's always a chance they can help make the travel burden easier on you through money or providing lodging or something else. So if you're in this situation, ask them what options they might provide other than traveling to the school for the interview.

What home school curriculums do you use and why?

c r

I'd like to know how your children feel about the curriculum that you have chosen.

Answer
We use a variety of materials, which I discuss with my daughter when I am choosing them. We look at samples, talk about what she'd like to learn and then give the material a try.
For math - we used a combo of singapore math and EPGY thru 7th grade pre-algebra. We are now exploring various areas of problem solving before moving on to the algebra sequence. She is working in Challenge Math, listening to The Joy of Thinking, and working on AMC 8 practice exams.
For LA- she is finishing her course from K12. Next year we will do LA from a variety of sources she has helped pick out.
History - we finished K12 history course and are now doing unit studies from a magazine called Learning Through History.
Science - Singapore science which we do with another family, plus activities from an ocean science book.
music - K12 Exploring music and piano lessons
Art- homeschool co-op
Miscellaneous- English from the Roots Up, word roots, starting Minimus Latin, and Rosetta Stone Spanish. Also exploring any topics that come up that interest us.

When we get something that is just not working, we reassess what we are using. Sometimes, if is just not great but working alright we'll stick out the grade level and then move on to something new the next time. If it really sucks, we bag it right away, sell it if possible, and get something new. I'd rather put together something myself from library books, then make her finish something that is sucking all enjoyment out of the experience.

its me

when you see a kid walking with a completely stuffed backpack what do you think of the kid?

how about walking around with nothing (books, bag, etc.)

a draw string bag?

carrying just a folder?

carrying just a spiral notebook?

So, like what do you think? anything is a right answer, just opinion, it could be ANYTHING you think...even that they like the color red lol...some suggestions mainly are nerd, jock, goody two shoes, prep, or what means trouble to you?

thanks!

Answer
Everyone I know does this in Australia, lol.
The lockers are always getting robbed so it's less hassle to just lug your books back and forth to school each day.

What kind of backpack should I get for freshman year?

Kendyyy

So I'm moving to a new public school from a private school and they keep their backpacks in lockers all day, but I'll still need to carry homework and stuff. I already have a Vera Bradley laptop backpack but I hear a lot of public school kids use JanSports. Which should I use? Also whats it like going to a new high school where you know nobody? Especially going from private to public school?

Answer
People don't really care what kind of backpack you have. I got this one in black for my freshman year and it is still is great shape!
http://www.amazon.com/Protego-Backpack-Bags-Under-Armour/dp/B005493Q12/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343525152&sr=8-1&keywords=Under+Armour+%C2%91Protego%C2%92+backpackt

I went to a new school last year and even though I was on the volleyball team I felt like I still didn't know a lot of people. I was scared on the first day (thankfully it was a half day) but my dad calmed me down and told me what the first day is spent doing(taking attendance, talking about the rules, how they grade, talking about the supplies you will need, and maybe passing out the text books). It was scary but I let people come talk to me and they did, since I'm shy. Just be yourself and have fun! Also don't change who you are to fit into a group. You're only a freshman once! Have fun! :)

What is your daily schedule for kids in school?

Quinn

Help my kids start school soon what is a good schedule for them

Answer
My four and six year old children go to school (we are in the UK if it matters).

7: I wake up, have a quick shower, get dressed and eat breakfast. Essentially- GET READY BEFORE YOU GET YOUR KIDS UP.

7;30- Wake the children up, with clothes laid out on bed already, take them downstairs, where cereal (chosen the day before to avoid arguments) and milk/whatever is laid out. Be organised!

7;45- Get them dressed. This can be a daily battle! Every evening before a school day, make sure their schoolbags are packed- if they have uniform, then lay it all out, if they don't then get them to choose clothes and lay it out. Essentially, be organised, so you don't have to organise with such limited time. My advice for dressing is to use a timer- tell them that they've got ten minutes to get dressed and you'll tell them every minute. If they have trouble with buttons, or something, make sure to help. Tell them that if they get dressed before the timer is up, they get a small treat (a bit of cereal bar, or a sticker set thing which is quite cheap). I recommend using star charts because getting dressed can be a nightmare for kids....If they get dressed before the timer for the whole week, they get a special treat at the end of the week. Use positive discipline.

7;55- They are dressed and have eaten breakfast (always eat breakfast before getting dressed, it's so much cleaner). They brush their teeth for two minutes, but usually with general stuff it ends up as five minutes. Watch them do it and tak this time to comb your hair or whatever (asyou will have brushed your teeth before the kids woke up). Watching them means they'll do it quicker and properly!

8- Bundle them out of the house. Any books and bags and sport kit should have been packed the day before in the evening, so it's relatively easy.

8;20- We arrive at school, having gone on the bus and walked.

8:25- School starts. I say goodbye, having had a natter with the other parents there in the playground, and go to work.

3:30- They come out. The first thing I do is check they have everything- sport kit, school bag, packed lunch, letters, books, homework.

3;50 or so, arrive home. Kids are always hungry after school, so I give them cereal and a biscuit, and either milk or juice, depending on choice, and sometimes water. Let them relax and unwind by watching a small bit of TV or playing a small game.

4;10, after snack and relaxing, ask them about any homework they have. Write it down so you and they can remember it, and pin the list somewhere obvious. When they have finished the homework, you can tick it off. Write down the due date for the homework too. First of all, get them to do one piece of homework OR get them to practice their words/spellings/phonics for half an hour.

4;40, give them a break from that and read them a story. It should take about ten minutes, get your kids to point out stuff from the book and actively ask them questions to make sure they understand.

4;50, start another piece of homework if they have it OR finish/do another part of previous homework. If it is a longer piece of homework, I try and break it up into 30 minutes practice. If they don't have homework work- instead they have to do certain spelling words, use a game to check their words. If, for example, they did cat, bat, sat and mat, then you tell them the word and help them spell it, then get them to draw a picture to go with it.

5;20 I get them up to the shower for ten minutes or so each.

5;40- Check homework off the list. If all homework is completed, put a sticker on the sticker chart if you have one, if you don't, then praise them (I would recommend using a sticker chart though). Get them to choose a game to do, and play with them for a bit.

6- Watch TV together for half an hour.

6;30- eat supper all together. They help lay out the table and take the plates etc; in and get praised for doing so, try and encourage responsibility early on.

6;50- I put the washing on for anything to be used the day after next day. Find out what they need for tomorrow and lay out clothes and shoes. Get them to choose the cereal and packed lunch if they have it for tomorrow.

7; Play an online game with one of them for half an hour. My partner does something with the other one. It usually swaps around, it just depends what they want to, it's quite relaxed. It could be anything. Sometimes we just watch TV.

7;30- send them up to bed. They brush their teeth for two minutes with myself and my partner checking.

7:45- They get into their pyjamas. If they have a messy room, they get five minutes to tidy everything off the floor then and there.

7:55 (five minutes accounts for getting into their pyjamas from before)- Read a bedtime story to both of them. The four year old first, and then the six year old, for ten minutes each.

8:15 Lights out.
