Which backpack will last longer?

Kelly M

I've had terrible trouble with bookbags. My past three have all gotten holds in them. The first one was from target. The lining in between the pockets ripped out. The second was an Eastsport from Wal*mart. The plastic-y stuff that lines the inside chipped off and a hole was made. My third and most surprising was an Adidas duffle bag. Not a full size, just one main pocket. It got holes around the bottom edge. Which one of these two bags do you think will withstand a FEW years instead of just one or two?

oh, and unless you pay for it, i'm not going any more expensive than $30. this is highschool. not a backpacking trip.

Answer
Buy cheap and get low-grade stuff like those two bags.
Then complain in a year the base fell out...
School books are heavy and they've got corners and edges that wear through materiels more than backpacking stuff does.
Unless you go backpacking with a bunch of school books.
School bags get a lot of use...
They get more use in a year than most bags on backpacking trips get in a year.
What's the deal?...a thirty-dollar bag that lasts one year or a fifty-dollar bag that lasts three years.
So which is the best bargain?
My Karrimor cost $70 and is twelve years old. Not a hole worn in it anywhere after using it on more than twenty big trips hiking and touring and almost daily use for shopping and local photo trips with heavy equipment (big heavy wildlife lenses and heavy tripods) and it's still waterproof...the Alps, the Andes,Machu Pichu, Atacama Desert, Mozambique jungles, Malaysian rain-forest (Lived East for a while), all over Europe.
Cost so far....less than $6 a year.
I won't be replacing it for many years yet.
Good savings for more trips......12 thirty-dollar bags would have cost $360.
No kidding....

What does a kid need in his backpack for headstart?

singaloves

My son is 3 and wants to take a backpack to school this year when he starts headstart. What should I put in it, because it isn't actually required to bring one? Any ideas?

Answer
Put a Composition notebook and some crayons. Composition notebooks are pretty cheap and it could make him feel like a big kid going to school with a little notebook to write in. Also the crayons are always fun for kids, I still love them and I'm in high school :D ! Packing a toy would be nice too. Just not his #1 Favorite. If other kids take his favorite or it breaks it would be the end of his world.

High school bag help?

?

I know it's a little early, but i was wondering what bags do girls use in high school? My brother said that they mainly use totes. I think i am going to use one of those, but i am afraid of killing my shoulder. So are tote bags a good idea, or do they just get too heavy?

Answer
I have a tote bag, well it's not tote fabric, but i got it at Khol's, and it' shiny and silver and you wear it like a tote bag. It does hurt my shoulder, i often get red marks on my shoulder from carrying around my books, and i don't even carry that many books either. A lot of people have totes, but a lot of people have regular JanSport bags too. But if you think those are ugly, then get a Pink backpack (from victorias secret). Practically every girl that i see has one of those, they're expensive, but they're comfortable and cute. I want one really bad!

high school freshman tips?!?

Pumpkin.

Okay I'm from the UK and I'm going into Year 10 in like 3 weeks but I guess more people will understand what I mean by that if I say I'm gonna be a freshman which if I was American, I guess I would be:) (I'm 14). I have friends in the majority of my classes, but I'm worried in case I'm alone in some classes? I'm worried about immature boys and mean girls making fun out of me:/ and I'm worried about getting lost too. Any tips to help me with starting high school? Thanks!!!

Plus I'm really mature for my age, but I don't look it as I am pretty short (well I look my age, but everyone else just looks older). I've got a really nice Hello Kitty backpack and I want to wear a bow in my hair, I have a blazer and tie uniform too. Will I look okay?

School Bag For teenage girls?

Love_like_

So I'm going to be a freshmen this year and in the beginning of 6th grade I wore a louis vuitton bag for school, but got a lot of nasty comments, so I switched to Kipling, then in 7 and 8 grade I had a juicy couture bag. For freshmen year I want a bag thats branded but that I like. I need it to be under $150, since I don't want to be way over the top. Sooo if any of you could list me links of bigger brands where I found find a good school bag. I would also like a shoulder bag. Anyways thanks a lot <3 xox

Answer
I recommend the Longchamp Le Pliage bag for high school, its nice and more mature, plus its more toned down so people wont talk bad about it. there are many colors to choose from, I personally like the Natural color. I have linked you to the large size but they have smaller ones available.

Answer
Well to be honest, any side bag is going to strain your back/neck/shoulder.

Japanese school??

Hot Chokol

just wondering how schools are actually like in japan....
just curious Please and thank you :D

Answer
Elements of each answer so far have truth to them but some are exaggerated. Times have changed since I attended public Japanese school (late 80s) and I was only in elementary so I can't comment on the other years but here's my experience compared to the American system (most of my life).

1. Your homeroom is your life, there's not so much switching classes. The only class we held in another room was science. If the teacher doesn't know the subject, you're more likely to have a new teacher come in then change rooms. This is why Japanese often have lifetime friendships with classmates because you spend so much time together. You go on school trips as well that are as dear to them as prom to some Americans.

2. You learn a lot more in general (and in depth?) than America. I was in 5th grade and we learned to play recorder (my brother in 1st grade learned melodian), cook, sew, and wash clothes.

3. The students are the janitors. This means you are broken into groups and have assignments for that period (I can't remember if it was once, a week, or so.) Bathroom duty sucked. The boys in general let the girls do all the work. Once a month or semester, we held a school-wide yard cleanup where everyone pulled out weeds, etc.

4. You eat the school lunch (except for high school I think). Again, some kids are assigned lunch duty and they go down to the kitchen and bring the lunch to the classroom and serve it cafeteria style to the whole class.

5. Mandatory PTA fees.

6. Mandatory uniform. This includes wearing slippers in the classrooms (not your shoes) and a separate PE uniform that is standard Japan wide which is why everyone probably looks the same but the reverseable hat is quite handy for breaking up into teams, instead of shirts vs. skins it's red vs. white. Uniform includes your schoolbag but there is some flexibility 'cos I never had the standard bag. But where I went to elementary wasn't strict on uniforms except for that one day when everyone had to wear a uniform and I didn't so I got slapped. Which leads me to...

7. Physical punishment. I think it was outlawed even when I was in school but it still occurs. Everyone else grew up that way, it's part of the culture. The worst cases I ever heard where a student who went deaf in one ear because he fell asleep so the teacher made a loud noise next to his ear and the other was a death because there's a large gate to the high schools and the principal was very strict about being on time so shut the gate on the dot though a student was still trying to get in.

8. The classroom sizes are larger than America. Perhaps 40? Americans complain when it reaches 29.

9. Mandatory club membership. After school there are various clubs and you're supposed to sign up for one of them and attend. I signed up for ping-pong.

10. Rules regarding personal appearance enforced. This includes no nail polish, no ear piercings, no dyeing hair, etc.

11. The yard is quite large and a lot of schools have a pool. My elementary school did. I can only think of one school I have ever seen in America with a pool and it was a high school.

12. More hours spent in school due to club participation and Saturdays. Saturdays were half days. This has changed so that you go on one Saturday a month or none at all now. I went to school on Christmas Eve because it was a Saturday and I had a hard time with that because traditionally my American family celebrated on Eve. (But it's not 6am-8pm! Some kids may be in a school late but it's not their public school, it's a tutor house known as juku AKA cram school. The school starts late, around 8am-9am. All my American schools started earlier than that.)

13. School year is April-March which means the summer break is much shorter than America and you have homework. Break time around New Year's is longer because it's an important holiday.

14. You pay for the textbooks and they're yours to keep. They're much smaller and lighter than American books which makes them easier to carry and less back stress.

15. Mandatory learning of English, not a choice of another language. Some schools may start teaching it as early as elementary or parents might start sending their kids to tutors as early as elementary. If you want to learn another language, that's what educational tv and university is for.

16. Entrance exams for high school. Some kids (or their parents) desperately want to get into the top high schools so they might even delay entrance to high school until they pass the exam for the school they want.

17. Mandatory education ends at junior high, equivalent to 9th grade in America. High school is optional but most attend (10th-12th grade).

Little kid backpacks for teens?

Sandie

Okay so why is it that the latest style in HIGH SCHOOL, yes I said HIGH SCHOOL - is Dora the Explorer, Spongebob, Elmo, etc. backpacks? Guys mostly, I don't think I've seen girls do this but it's incredibly stupid. Why is this the newest fashion trend and when will it end?

Answer
haha lol. i know what u mean, im one of them kids with a disney cards bag and im 14. its because most backpacks for our age are just like nike or adidas and really dull. although lil kids ones are bright and oringinal. also because most tv programs designed for our age are RUBBISH! CBBC have a laugh. so it probably wont end until bags brighten up or tv programs et better and start making gear. :)

For example, do you recall the August, 1963 March on Washington in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous âI Have a Dreamâ speech? Do you remember any other events related to the civil rights movement in the 1960s? What was your opinion of the civil rights movement?

9. What was your opinion of the 1960s womenâs rights movement?

10. Did you attend the 1969 Woodstock Festival? If so, what was your experience? If not, what was your opinion of the festival and the 1960s youth counterculture?

Answer
Actually, I was born in 1943, so I don't know if I qualify for your Survey, but being older I may have a better grip on it. So i'll do it anyway.

1) Steve - 17yrs of age, In High School and worked Part time for my Uncle's Orthopedic Store

2) The Cold war brought about allot of fear of Communism and that Russia would cause a War with the United States. I felt sure that it would spread

3) The Cuban Missile Crises, holds special meaning to me because I was in the US Army at the time and put on Alert to go to Cuba if need be to fight Our bags were packed, trucks loaded and ready to depart to the air strip.I remember calling home and telling my Mom I may be going, It was scary for a young boy of 18,

4) President John F Kennedy's assassination is another very vivid memory for me, I had just moved off the Army base with my new Bride,In Clarksville Tennessee, the Delivery man was hauling in our TV set and said to us, The President was just shot, That really floored me, Again I was on alert and ordered back to base for briefing on what may happen next.
I for one Like President Kennedy, he was sharp, young and knew what the people wanted,

5) Lyndon B Johnson, to me was a shifty, not to be trusted President, I did not like his politics

6) Vietnam, was a sad time for america, we got dragged into a war that was not just, many of my friends lost there lives there. We fought not to win, but placate politicos,

7) We owned an Emerson TV, and before entering military service in 1962, we watched, The Ed Sullivan show, Ozzie and Harriet, Our Miss brooks, Disney Series, Wrestling, Steve Allan talk show,
American Bandstand. These shows were family oriented, had variety, non-violent, fun,

8) Martin Luthar King jr, was a non violent activist for Civil Rights, I recall racial tensions and one incident in Brooklyn where the National Guard had to be called to quell the rioting. I enjoyed the I have a dream speach and the March was a successful one, I do believe that King made great strides for civil rights for Blacks, I admire him and his works,
9)The 1960's were a turbulant time for many women, what with the burning of the Bra's and equal rights in the work place etc, it turned men on there ear, Women, going from passive to aggressive and standing up for themselves led to a rethinking by men as to a womans role in society.

10) Ah, The Festival at Wood Stock, What a wild drug crazed event,, NO I did not attend, thought about it briefly but realized the sheer folly to even attempt it,.To be honest, the free love aspect intriqued me some but not to a great extent, I was never into the Drug culture so was not in tune with the youth movement at the time, Did not really approve of what they were doing, then again I was Married and in my late 20's had 2 kids, a job, and settled

Hope I helped you with this,? if not , hey I enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane, Best of Luck

Back to school shopping?

Hannah

I already went shopping but i am now looking into some online shopping, for shirts, a cheap bag, and a few more supplies. I really mean cheap, nothing expensive at all.

Answer
I tried to search around and it seems like the only reputable online store that's giving out a back-to-school sale is Amazon. You can find their selection of discounted products at:
http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_encoding=UTF8&bbn=1069242&camp=1789&creative=390957&hidden-keywords=school%20-ink%20-toner&linkCode=ur2&page=1&pf_rd_i=20&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=1386366682&pf_rd_r=0A3Q8AY1N2DJQDYXZ11Q&pf_rd_s=goldbox-ads2&pf_rd_t=701&rh=n%3A1064954%2Cn%3A!1084128%2Cn%3A1069242%2Cp_6%3AATVPDKIKX0DER%2Cp_75%3A50-%2Cp_8%3A2229051011%2Cp_n_availability%3A1248830011&sort=relevancerank&tag=ya904-20

Yes I'm a Girl.

Answer
The Puma Sporty Original #2 is too much like a gym bag in appearance. #3 is very nice and so is #1. #1 the Phantom Ew looks classy yet sporty still due to the accents. I think a suede pearlized bag is too much and doesn't look as nice as the first.
So #1 gets my vote.
Actually it is something I would like to get for myself.

Good Backpack for Freshman girl?

Megan

I'm going to be a Freshman. At the other school I went to I didn't have a lot of books to carry so I used like a AE tote. But this year I don't see me using a tote. Should I get one with designs on it or just a plain one? I was looking at north face ones but I don't know what one is a good one for high school.
Please let me know your thoughts and if you have any ideas what backpack I should get.
Thanks in advance!

Answer
What budget are your parents allowing you to spend on a backpack?

I would look for a backpack that is made of a durable cordura denier fabric which is waterproof. Look at the stiching all over the backpack. Make sure that the shoulder straps are contoured and well padded (TRUST me on this) and that there is some padding on the back of the backpack (you do not want to have a full load of books and having that constantly hitting your back every time you move around). Look for a backpack with multiple pockets and compartments and look for a side pocket to store your water bottle.
What I found that was important is to have a well made top grip handle. You don't want to lift your backpack (especially when it is heavy) and that top handle rips off (that happened to me before using a cheap backpack during my freshman year in college).

If you are set on buying a North Face brand backpack, I would opt for these:
http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/equipment-daypacks/heckler.html
http://www.thenorthface.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=223751&storeId=207&catalogId=10201&langId=-1&from=subCat&parent_category_rn=24451&variationId=QL2

The North Face Jester is the least expensive out of all of the models. I used to carry that one and I HATED it. It did not have enough space and the way the backpack straps were situated, it tore a tendon on my arm last year. Needless to say, I got rid of it.

I am a firm believer in Oakley backpacks. A little pricey, but I have never ever had a problem with quality and functionality. I am giving you links to Oakley Vault (Oakley's online outlet store):

There are more newer models on Zappos.com.

Backpack for a high school girl?

Erika

What kind of backpacks do high school girls use?
How big would you recommend?
Tote? Or like Backpack, and like which colors are in???
I think i am also going to be carrying my purse, and might want to put my purse in my backpack occasionally?

Answer
Hey girl!

Backpacks can be .... confusing, to say the least. You want one that's durable, but also stylish. Easy to carry, yet not too small. Big, yet not overpowering.

Many girls have resorted into carrying large purses or tote bags with them instead of backpacks. This works well for many but hardly works for some. Many who carry purses put important things in the purse and carry the rest which can be very convenient!

... which can be perfect for you purse!

Although purses / totes are in, for a more urban / functional look, carry around a shoulder backpack.

Like this one: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=22891972&parentid=W_ACC_BAGS

This type of bag holds more than a purse but not that much more! This bag is for a more medium to medium heavy load

Typical looking backpacks, like JanSport bags, aren't "in style" at the moment, although they are very durable. Although, exceptions can be made.

Like this bag: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=23993264&parentid=W_ACC_BAGS

It's functional and durable, yet stylish!

This one is for the really really heavy loads, so maybe a freshman year or junior year of high school bag!

If you want to know about what colors are in style, "colors" isn't necessarily the right word for some bags. "Patterns" is.

Backpacks with floral or tribal prints are very much in style for backpacks / urban shoulder bags

If you want to be daring and try to find a solid color, make sure it's light or pastel-esque. Solid colors are also acceptable with purses.

Purses and patterns don't necessarily mix. Maybe tote bag and patterns, but not purses and patterns.

All in all, it really does depend of how much work your getting.

Remember that a bag is supposed to last all year, so don't sell yourself short! Make sure you find the right bag for your work load and your style!

I really like the backpacks at UrbanOutfitters, although they can be expensive. But they are durable.

Forever 21 has good, cheap purses as well as UrbanOutfitters!

Good Luck!

First day of school outfit ideas?

Liz

I start school on Wednesday, and I'm torn between two outfits. One is a pair of shiny black leggings (kind of like fake leather) and a yellow and grey striped tank top (it sounds lame, but it's really cute) and either flip flops or flats. The other one is the same shirt and shoes, but with yoga pants. Which outfit should I wear? Which shoes should I go for? Also, I have a normal backpack and a tote bag, so which should I use? Thanks!
Skinny yoga pants, not regular yoga pants. They look exactly like leggingns. And I barely own and dresses or skirts, so that's out.

Answer
It's soo much easier with a school uniform it isn't even funny. I had school uniforms for half of my life and the other half without. The first day is only a half-day so don't waste the cutest outfit for a half-day. Since it's still hot, wearing something casual and still a little summery would be okay. In fact, wearing summer stuff (vs. traditional 'back-to-school'-ish clothes that are more fall/autumnal) would be cute and the most comfortable.

I always avoided wearing brand-new stuff in the first week of school because it seemed funny to me to see so many kids with their brand-new, back-to-school clothes and shiny, new backpacks. I always thought it was much cooler to not do that. I would wear a really faded and distressed pair of jeans with a tank and flip-flops when it was still hot. Basically, what I would wear if I was just out & about before school started that year.

I don't know if you're a dress kind of person but I always wore little cotton dresses like this with flip-flops or flats (or Keds) for the first couple weeks of school. It's what everyone wore (southern California)

The bumblebee tank and yoga pants with flip flops (unless school dress code says NO to flip-flops.. some do) sounds cute.. with the tote bag and a cute pair of sunglasses. (would also be cute with a pair of skinny cargo's). Maybe even a dab of suntan oil on your arms so you smell like summer!

school bag question!!!!!?

Q. okay so I would like to know what kind of school bag I should get.
Okay so about my school we don't carry around our bags and backpacks cause we're not allowed too.(security issues)And we have full length lockers if that makes a diffrence.I really like the hollister/abercombie/aero tote bags. But i don't know if i should get something like a roxy or billabong backpack. Also I wanted to know what you guys thought of large aero tote bags and useing the same one 2 years in a row.Or if useing the same one is a totally NOT!I think it mite be a not since my school is full of fashionistas.Anyways please answer!!!!

Answer
Who gives a damn about fashionistas. They are stuck up people who spend more money than necessary to follow trends that won't be "in" withing 5 months.

If you walk home or ride a bus, get a real backpack. It can get heavy when your science teacher assigns homework & your math teacher wants a bunch of papers done & your english teacher expects you to have a paper the next day.

I personally think Roxy & Billabong have cuter bags than Hollister. & you can use the same bag for all four years of HS if you want.

Cheapest way to ship books from pennsylvania to other countries?

mstc2

Which services offered the cheapest services to ship books from pennsylvania to other countries:? The amount of time needed to deliver to that country is not important, please advise.

Answer
I used to get donated books from a Peace Corps Volunteer who used to work as a PCV in my hometown. She is now based in San Diego, California. The books went to my pet project which is donating used non-fiction/fiction to the 4 local school libraries in need of them. It's a continuing project because there is a dire need for these stuff as books are very expensive. I receive these books through M-Mail which takes about 3 months to arrive as they are sent by ship/boat

Here is something that you might find useful from the US Postal Service.

Direct Sacks of Printed Matter to One Addressee (Mâbags)

M-bags are defined as direct sacks of printed matter (see 261.22) sent to a single foreign addressee at a single address. There are three types of Mâbags: Airmail M-bags, International Priority Airmail (IPA) M-bags, and International Surface Air Lift (ISAL) M-bags. All M-bags are subject to the following conditions of mailing:

1. Maximum weight of a sack: 66 pounds (including the tare weight of the sack). Lower maximum weights apply to certain countries. See the Individual Country Listings.
2. Availability: All destinations that are referenced in the Individual Country Listings for Airmail M-bags, in Exhibit 292.452 for IPA M-bags, and in Exhibit 293.452 for ISAL M-bags.
3. Identification: PS Tag 158, Mâbag Addressee Tag, must be completed and attached to the neck of the sack.
4. Postage: The applicable postage for Airmail M-bags, International Priority Airmail (IPA), and International Surface Air Lift (ISAL) must be affixed to PS Tag 158.
5. Extra services: Certificate of mailing is available. Registry and insurance are not available.

Printed matter is admissible in M-bags. Articles that meet the definition of âprinted matterâ include newspapers, magazines, journals, books, sheet music, catalogs, directories, commercial advertising, and promotional matter. âPrinted matterâ is defined as follows:

1. Papers upon which words, letters, characters, figures, images, or any combinations thereof appear.
2. Papers that do not have the character of a bill or statement of account.
3. Papers that do not have the character of current and personal correspondence.

Other Articles

Certain other articles may be enclosed in M-bags, provided that all of the following conditions of mailing are met:

1. The articles being sent are limited to discs, tapes, and cassettes; commercial samples shipped by manufacturers and distributors; or other non-dutiable commercial articles or informational materials that are not subject to resale.
2. The articles are related to the printed matter (see 261.21) with which they are being mailed.
3. The articles are affixed to or are otherwise combined with the accompanying printed matter.
4. The combined weight of each printed matter mailpiece and the related articles may not exceed 4 pounds.
5. The M-bag must be accompanied by a fully completed PS Form 2976, Customs Declaration CN 22 â Senderâs Declaration (green label), which is to be affixed to PS Tag 158, M-bag Addressee Tag.

Mail Not Sealed Against Inspection

M-bags are not sealed against inspection. Regardless of physical closure, the mailing of an M-bag, including an airmail, IPA, or ISAL M-bag, constitutes consent by the mailer to inspection of the contents.

ideas for school project?

Q. So we have to make a toy for art class. but I don't really know what to make because i really have no talent in making things. so what some ideas of toys i could make for around ages 6-10 and that is pretty easy to make with around the house objects. and is pretty small. so it can fit in a Walmart bag or a zip-lock baggy.

Thanks :P

Answer
I volunteer with a lot of kids at my local science center and I know they really like the balloon cars. You need a piece of cardboard in the shape of a rectangle, a straw, some tape, 4 bottle lids, a balloon, some markers, and string. First glue the bottle lids to the cardboard like wheels, then decorate the cardboard however you want. Tape the straw to the bottom. Suspend the string between two chairs and pull it tight, but first run the string through the straw so the car will hang on it. Finally blow up the balloon and tape it to the top of the cardboard when you let the balloon go it flys across the string. Hope this helps.

school supplies (ridiculous don't u think)?

2shay

My daughter is going into 1st grade and the kids k-4 are NOT allowed backpacks with wheels. They also need baby wipes, camera's, tissues and paper towels. Along with ziplock bags. There are 33 kids in each class, how many of these items do they really use a year? How much do you think is left over?

Some teachers require the kids to have those fold up matts and they specify, "no roll up matts".

Why do teachers do this. are they trying to make it hard on parents. Now, I am not by any means disgracing teachers, but I want to know why all the crazy demands? Wouldn't it be better on the first day of school, to put all those wipes and stuff in a hat and let the kids draw? This way you don't get too much and the parents can save $$ without haveing to buy all of it. I know there is some left over in the closest.

Answer
Yes some teachers ask for a lot of stuff. Try buying for 5 kids from kindergarten to a Senior in High School. It isn't easy, but many of the office supply stores, Wal-mart, and Target have great sales for back to school. Some have limits on how many you can get like on paper. One store had loose leaf paper for 15 cents limit 5. So each child was given a $1 and 5 packs of paper, I did it, my mom did it, my sister, and husband. We got enough paper to last the year very cheap.

My sister is a teacher. I know she has asked for baby wipes in the past. This is to save trips to the restrooms to wash hands when working on a project. She has also asked for certain brands like for colors and markers. This is cause they work better on the paper they use and most the time last the entire year.

Many schools are banning backpacks with wheels because of injuries. They also damage the walls and floors. My middle schooler has to have a clear backpack - no wheels. This was not easy to find. But a little shopping around when out we found one.

You might think some things are silly on the list, but many times the teacher has found it comes in very handy.

what to put in a girl's school bag?

Smokeless

I'm going to 9th grade next month so what are the stuff i should put u know like books, pencils, notebooks and other girly things like perfume, makeup, and other random things. I'm going to a private school in Dubai so it may be hard for some of you but please i want a LONG list thx. ;)

Answer
Great. I just finished ninth grade.
Does your school provide notebooks? I don't recommend using school notebooks. In a private school the students are probably going to be from wealthy families. And remember that Dubai gets really hot.
With that in mind, I think we can start.
Heat. Deodorants are important, and that's something you'll want to save in your P.E. bag, not necessarily in your school bag. Have a small hairbrush and a compact with you everywhere. Be REALLY careful about your make-up choice, since sweat can smudge it entirely.
Hmm... have cute notebooks, but you don't need a million books to carry around everywhere, now, do you? Get one that is with around five segments (like those with colourful segments and each segment has its own colour and whatever) and make sure it's squared, so that you can use it for math and english and whatnot. Make sure its cover is a base colour. It can be pink, blu, red, purple, whatever, or colourful. BUT nothing with icons or pictures. If you're desperate, you can decorate it with stickers and pictures which is cool. But no Rebecca Black or Justin Bieber. That's just...that.
Have a blue, black, and red ink pen just in case there are insistant teachers. Also get a pack of the thin tipped stabilo colour pens. They work really well for titles.
You can have a bottle of perfume, but make sure it's not too strong, too sweet, or too anything, but fresh. Like the Donna Karan Delicious apple series.
Female pads. one or two, all the time.
Maybe something to change into in case of anything.
Hmm... have an mp3 or ipod, iphone, galaxy, whichever. Something that plays music. It's a life saver at times, but don't get too dependent on those to the extent where you become anti social. If you have one of the apple products with the apps, the apps and your development in games like tiny wings, angry birds, and doodle jump can occasionallly become chat material. Also instant access to internet on your fingertips is a fun thing to have.
You might want and additional tiny notebook from which you can tear out small pages and inscribe notes subtly during a lesson. Its even better if its squared like your notebook so the teachers won't notice.
A digital camera! Light and useful. Snap unforgettable moments of your life and save them forever. Very sweet. Also useful when reminiscing with your friends. And material to post on facebook.
A hairband. You never know when you might need it. One, or three. Always a good thing to have back ups.
Snacks! A day won't go without those. Small things to keep your stomach from going crazy, like cookies and crackers and such.
Cool shades. Protects you from the annoying, harmful rays of sunlight, right? ;)
Speaking of sunlight... I haven't lived in Dubai, but I lived in Turkey. And one thing is you get tanned. OR RED. If you are the type that gets red, dont get too frantic over sun screen, but it wouldn't harm to use it. But warning; don't get frantic.
A nice pair of trainers for P.E., sweatpants and a shirt. One of those towel-y wristbands that help wipe away the sweat. Which is their entire purpose but some wear it for fashion, too.
Hmm...when talking about music devices I mentioned it briefly but, YOUR PHONE. Keep it in your bag. Doesn't always have to be in your pocket, but a must-be in you bag at least.
A waterbottle if your school doesn't have plastic cups. Unbelievable harsh truth; ours didn't. But then again, you won't need to get out of class and you can drink water freely whenever you wish. Which is a good thing in a country where you can practicaly go dehydrated.
Cash. Just in case. And an ID of some sort, any sort, as long as it's an ID.
Your text books is a custom...
Oh! I talked about pens, but I never mentioned pencils and all that.
Have a compass (as in the thing that helps you draw circles and not the north south east west direction tool), at least 15cm ruler, eraser, mechanical and/or normal pencil, sharpener and/or pencil led, and a highlighter can be useful too. The bag-like roundish cloth pencilcases with nothing additional inside are the best way to store these things.
Have an agenda or a homework diary or whatever you wish to call it (maybe the school will provide one for you) where you can write your homework and mark days and stuff.
A lip gloss. Lightly pink, but nothing too extravagant. Remember you're in school, and a freshman. Freshmans are usually really excited and some try to show off or be cool. Don't do that. It will just get people peeved at you.
It's good to be prepared, but not too prepared and jumpy. And it's okay to make mistakes. The more natural you are, the better.
And with that I come to the end of my preaching :P Have fun in High School! :D

What to put in paty favor bags for middle school age kids?

Sassy&Mand

Lol sorry for asking this if the answer is like completley obvious! Uh around $5 each bag(?). Ideasa for both boys and girls? Ummm? yep! i really need help with this question! and also like places i can get the stuff reasonably priced! Uh the partys weird and it's like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hello Kitty and uhh a little super hero theme! hahaha ahh by the way this is a suprise party for my little sister! So yep post your ideas bellow! Thank you!
Mia

Answer
I suggest planning out who is coming to the party before hand, and giving different gift bags depending on the gender of the person. To tell you the truth, I don't really think you should base the party bags on the theme, because it's just going to be way to hard and the party bags should have things that people actually can use and want to have. (Just a suggestion, I don't mean to sound snobby or offend you)

For girls, go to Target, Walmart or the Dollar Store. Those stores sometimes have some one dollar lipglosses or chapsticks. Walmart has these travel/mini bottles of hair product which would make a great addition to the girls' gift bags. I suggest getting mousse or hairspray. (about 1-2 dollars each) Maybe put in a chocolate candy bar, or in Target there's some body scrubs/washes that can be super cheap. (the body scrubs/washes that I've seen are usually around 1-2 bucks) A great idea is getting nail polish. Wet N Wild and I Love My Nails have nail polishes that are only one dollar. The colors I suggest are dark blue, black, white, or clear. Those are just some ideas. You can pick a few of them that you think is the best and fit in the $5 range, but don't buy all of them.

In Walmart, there are mini tubes of Axe deodorant. I honestly can't tell you the price because I'm a girl and I don't pay attention to this stuff, but it's pretty cheap. At my local Walmart, around the check-out places there are these packs of temporary tattoos. There's 50 of them in one pack and less than $5 per pack, which I think is a pretty good deal. You could put in 1 or more tattoos in each party bag, (I don't know how many people are coming to this party so you can maybe put more in each bag). Also I highly suggest sticking one or two (or more) candy bars. Boys are harder than girls (in my opinion) to think of gifts, so candy bars would be great because who doesn't love candy bars? So yeah, those are my suggestions for boy gift bags.

Hope I helped!

i pick the kids bags. i pick cheap trendy ones that they like. light ones are the easiest to carry and pay for. I'm in my mid 30's. expensive ones fall apart after one school year, cheap ones fall apart after one school year. if the kids are in pain, navy medicine will pay for it. we make more than 10,000 and less than 100,000

Why can't I sell stuff at school?

little_emp

I asked my cosmotology teacher if for the hair show we're holding, I could sell crafts that I make (like makeup bags, etc.) -- and she said she'd ask the principal but probably not because the income would be going to me.

I know the issue isn't with LAW, because the school can sell cupcakes, food, clothes, flowers, and whatever they want, and they have. The issue with school is that they're almost like a RUNNING ENTERPRISE. They don't want anything sold unless the income is going to the SCHOOL, or if it is for a charity. All they care about is getting as much money as they can (we even opened up a school store yesterday).

I thought school was a place for us to LEARN, and GROW, and develop SKILLS. I obviously can't go buy a store, and sell things, or even go online and sell things. I wanted to use this opportunity to SHOW people what I have to sell, and learn some business skills because it'd be easier to learn in school because it's a closed environment, and it's an easy way to gain experience and to get the word out. I mean in school we can sell pizza, or raffles, and whatnot because all the income is school gained (us students just do all the work for free). It isn't that selling isn't allowed, it's just they want the income to themselves.

I don't know.. I'm not asking for much. I just asked if I could have a small DESK to just have my things on display for things to buy. I doubt I need a permit -- the school sure as hell doesn't bother to get permits on bake sales, or random cupcake sales they have.

Answer
This happened at my school, at my school you get into loads of trouble if you are caught 'selling'
at my school; first; people were selling just odd chocolate bars, 50p a chocolate bar.. but then people realised big money could be brought in and I know a boy who makes around £50 ($81) a week from selling chocolate, the school see this as 'scamming' kids out of money, and instead of buying healthy food and giving money to the school they are buying chocolate and fizzy drinks from kids that have got it from a discount shop for about 10p (16cents) from that people found new idea's since so many people were selling chocolate and it moved onto cigarettes and people were stealing cigarettes from people; I actually saw a boy take £20 ($32) worth of cigarettes out of someones bag without hesitation and I asked him how much he sold them for and he sold them for £30 ($48) and people are buying ONE cigarettes for £3 ($5) which is shocking, but that's how much kids are charging.

I know yours is a different kind of thing but that was an example; but for my school, it a health and safety issue; people buying chocolate from discount shops and cigarettes which they have no idea where they have came from, but like you said; if the money isn't going to the school then they want nothing to do with it.

How to make a good bake sale speech?

Miss confu

I'm doing a bake sale for my school and really need an influencing paragraph regarding my sale. The bake sale is back to school so cookies and milk style. Can anybody write me a short speech that includes all this. Any ideas welcome :)

Answer
Still confused at who your audience is and the intent of the speech. Are you speaking to kids trying to convince them and their parents to make products for the bake sale? Are you speaking to kids trying to drum up attendance for bake sale buyers?

Calling all bakers and dessert fans. "Insert School Name" is holding a bake sale to help raise funds for "insert worthy causes". Your help is sorely needed and much appreciated. So, show off your baking skills and help us kids at the same time. Cookies, Brownies, Cakes, Cupcakes or any other sweet confections that you make.

(you really need to expand the types of things that you want here. Do you want just sweets or are you including savory dishes and soups and stews like some bake sales include).

If you don't have the time to bake, we also welcome bottled water, small bags of chips, baggies for packaging individual portions of cookies and even financial donations so that we can purchase the necessary supplies.

And, last but not least, we need your sweet tooth. Please come on down to the best bakery in town on "insert date and time" to sample some of our fine goodies. Show your support and bring the whole family down. And, don't forget to tell your friends to stop by too.

Next tell them how to sign up for donations of baked goods and how/when to bring in their goodies.

I just bought 5 full bags of tops with lace backs and...?

April

Ok so I just moved somewhere new and today I was going school clothes shopping and then I got 5 full bags of simply tops! I spent soo much money on them and I look on the schools website to check out the dress code and it said no see through! I would wear a strapless bra with them and a tank top and so there would be no bra showin what so ever but would the lacey stuff be a violation of the dress code? I am going into 10th grade and they are not like skanky clothes at all! They are very classy! Please! I'm so worried! And the cannot be brought back because there was a huge sale thingy!

Answer
Not unless you wear a tank top over them. You've got the receipts & tags on them still? Take them back, even if bought online. Or, give it away, or wear them when you're not in school. Go back & shop for those that you can wear FOR SCHOOL.

Which bag should I get for school? (Links included)?

Gary Jacks

I'm 15 going into 10th grade, and looking for a bag for school.

1. From reading the reviews, this bag seems large enough, but I'm not sure about the sturdiness.

$98 http://www.freepeople.com/accessories-bags/torino-double-pocket-hobo/

2. I absolutely love this bag. It's cute, huge, sturdy(?), and IMO looks great for school.

$128 http://www.freepeople.com/accessories-bags/tapisserie-hobo/

3. I think this bag is out, but it's just SO cute. I love the long chain strap. I'm not sure if it's big enough, or sturdy enough, but I put it on the list to see what you all think.

$248 http://www.freepeople.com/accessories-bags/tina-patched-satchel/

4. Again, I think this bag is already out. It's pricy, and an actual backpack. I'm looking for a shoulder bag/tote because I'm tired of backpacks. I already have a backpack from last year just in case the tote I might get doesn't work out. Anyways, this backpack is very cute and looks large and sturdy enough to hold textbooks and such.

$288 http://www.freepeople.com/accessories-bags/somerset-backpack/

5. This one is my personal favorite, but I'm just looking for others' opinions. It's exactly what I'm looking for: cute, simple, huge, sturdy, and not WAY overpriced. I know, it is pricy, but I might get my money's worth for it.

$228 http://www.freepeople.com/accessories-bags/somerset-backpack/

Which one do you think is best?
Oops! 5. is supposed to be this one: http://www.freepeople.com/accessories-bags/lexi-patched-tote/

Answer
All of these prices are ridiculous for a bag that your not going to want in a month.

Answer
I totally feel your pain! At my school we carry our back packs around! We can put books in out lockers, but you only have once a day and after school to go there. So we carry our bags. I got a bag from Pacsun.com and they have some great bags. The straps are nice and thick and full to support your shoulders and back!
