Teenage backpacks for back to school?

xmoveonhun

I was going to get a cute Juicy Couture one for $60, but it sold out -.-

I cannot for the life of me find cute backpacks for teen girls online. Can you helpp? (No LL Bean or PB Teen pleasee)

Thanks!:)

Answer
Hi:) I had a Juicy backpack last year. Don't get one. If you're bringing it to school, that might not be a good idea, becuse Juicy isn't meant for heavy duty use. They rip! Mine did.

Ebay/Google these stores and brand backpacks:

Delias
Vera Bradley (get the laptop bag for this one. The regular backpack is TINY!)
PacSun
Roxy
Volcom
QuickSilver
Buckle
Vans
Hot Topic
Sanrio (If you like Hello Kitty.)
Abercrombie & Fitch (These are rare, but if you can get your hands on one, it'll be cute!)
Victoria's Secret PINK

Hope I helpedâ¥

Is this girl just playing me around?

Daniel C

ok this is what happens, she said she likes me a lot. I like her too. We went out a couple of times. But, we go to different schools. And today, she basically used me as a driver to the mall to meet his best guy friend to shop and I just dragged with bags behind them while they chat. I feel very shi*tyy. It is like they are on a date, I am jsut a..
I just feel like a loser

Answer
You didn't and don't have to drive her anywhere. She shouldn't be controlling you and you should've told her you have somewhere to be and left them instead of feeling like the third wheel following them around.

A repost from toddler and pre-school?

essentiall

I am reposting this here because it is so busy and may get help from mums with older kids or just general advise - thanks

My 5 year old daughter is having 2 friends from school home to play tomorrow (they are still 4 but same year in school will be 5 soon). We have to walk nearly a mile home with them and all their lunchboxes, book bags etc etc.

One of the children is a bit of a runner - you know runs off here and there before you know it. I thought the other one was quiet and well behaved as in the past has always stayed close and held hands - but was warned today by her mother that she is not very good around roads.

We have to cross an extremely busy road to get home already decided would cross in a different place where there is a small island half way so only have to check traffic in one direction. Thought I would have the girl I knew to be a runner in one hand and the other friend holding the other hand and my daughters hand.
I am now starting to panic of whether I can keep them all safe - any tips would be appreciated. The house is also a tip because I have been so tired and busy lately

I will probably be fine and just worrying because so tired but any advise or tips would be welcome - I do appreciate the ones in toddler and preschool just want to get as many as possible.

P.S. - unfortunately don't have a car so not an option :(
Oh yea with house being a tip should I just let them play with anything and blitz it when gone or tidy up and limit the things they play with?

Answer
Set the rules beforehand. Stop to talk to all the girls, and don't single out the 'problem' child. Stoop down when you are doing this so you're at eye level; kids respond much better when an adult doesn't seem so large and intimidating. They listen much better, too.

Explain that you have a long walk, and crossing streets can be very dangerous. Emphasize that you'll all be holding hands each time you cross the street (be sure to make sure you're holding the runaway's hand). Let them know that there will be consequences if anyone misbehaves, and that they'll lose their playing priveleges when they get to your house. Let them know they can have fun- playing Eye Spy and things of that nature, and be careful at the same time.

Kids are less likely to misbehave if they know the rules beforehand, and understand the consequences of their actions. Keep it simple and easy to understand- a lengthy, detailed speech will only bore them and they'll tune you out.

If you are very concerned, I'd suggest getting a long rope and tying four knots in it, at even intervals. Have each girl hold onto one of the knots while you are walking, and make a game out of it- anyone who lets go is a rotten egg, for example. That way, it will be fun for her to stay with the group.

Kids act much differently when they're away from their parents. You might be pleasantly suprised at her good behavior, but be prepared either way.

As for the playdate, I would let them play as they pleased, but allow for clean-up time i one room before moving to the next. If they are done with a boardgame, have them put it back in the box before moving onto Barbies, and so forth. Otherwise, they'll dump out every toy and game they can, and complain they're bored within 15 minutes.

Hope this helped a bit; have fun!

How to homeschool with toddlers in your house?

Babs

I know this can work but need help and suggestions. How can I best manage this with kids 8, 6, 2, and one on the way? I long to be organized more in the process. I want to enjoy this time together yet have a sense of structure and sanity!

Answer
I remember those days very well. It can be rough but you can make it work. My kids are 14, 11 & 9.

When my girls were younger we did lessons in form of unit studies. This way they were learning together. When my middle daughter was 2 she was eager to sit at the table with her sister who was doing kindergarten work. I let her join in which kept her busy. But my son when he was 2 he did not want to sit at the table what so ever. So if you can encourage your 2yr old to join you.

When my son wouldn't join us I had to find other things to keep him busy. Yes, I was a bad mom and let him watch tv. He was watching educational shows and learning too.

What worked best though was putting away some toys for homeschooling time. When his sisters were learning he could go into the "homeschooling closet" (we kept it locked at the time) & pick out some toys. We had blocks, learning dvd's, sewing cards, puzzles, latch boards & other fun educational toys. It was treat each morning for him to pick out a few things to keep him busy.

We'd usually work on unit studies in the morning. That way when he napped we could work on math & reading.

A child of 2 is old enough to join for reading out loud. We'd often encourage my son to join us for that. I'd let him draw what I read and it would show me he was really listening.

I hope this helps. I know things are tough right now. Remind yourself too that you kids can help you with cleaning, laundry & other house hold chores. That counts as school too because they are learning to help out, learning chores and working together. Encourage them to help clean while they are young. I use to get my little ones a wet wash cloth and let them scrub the floor. They LOVED it! Even now sometimes my youngest two at 11 & 9 think it is fun to scrub the floor. lol Make cleaning fun.

One thing I did when my kids were little was do a "10 min. round up" I'd give the kids small grocery bags & we'd go into a room. We'd gather up all the trash. Who ever had the most trash would win a small prize. We'd go room to room cleaning up for about 2-4mins at a time. Making it a total of 10mins. You'd be surprised how much cleaning you can get done in just 10mins time. The kids enjoyed the game. But make sure you keep an eye on the really young kids because a trash bag can be unsafe for them.

As one homeschool mom once told me was to keep in mind the kids are young. They learn daily just doing basic things. Do not work yourself into a break down trying to jam everything in.

I had a nervous break our first year of homeschooling. It wasn't just school there were other things going on but I had a 6yr old, 22mts old & a newborn baby. We were in a new house, away from friends & trying to jam in a full 1st grade curriculum. I just feel apart one day. I could not handle it & I felt like a failure.

Kids can learn from board games, helping mommy cook, like I said they learn with chores & just reading out loud is learning.

We all lose our sanity sometimes. I had a massive migraine yesterday I lost it a few times. By 8pm I shut myself in my room & finally went to sleep. Crying because I screamed at the kids, I forgot to check one child's work and I felt mean shutting everyone out. lol

Hopefully our kids will remember mommy was always there and not the days we do scream. ; )

HUGS

It's needs to be big enough to hold my school supplies. I want an affordable one ( no more than 75 dollars) and something alot of people wouldn't have, like not one from american eagle, hollister etc. Could you send me some pics and links?

thankks!

Answer
Old Navy has a bunch of cute totes, and they're all really affordable.
http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/category.do?cid=12818

Delia's is a really nice place, too. A little more pricey but still within your budget.

Wet Seal (not pricey at all):

Kohl's is nice and affordable. It has a nice range.

Forever 21 has cute bags and good deals too.

Gap is nice as well.
http://www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=34749

And TJ Maxx has a bunch of brand names that you can get for way less than in a department store.

You might want to go to the stores to look at the actual bags first to decide whether their size is good or not.

Japanese High-School Girl Bags?

Answer
Yahoo! Japan has high school bags and accepts orders from other countries. Yahoo! Japan is written in Japanese, of course, and you need to create Yahoo! Japan ID first. If you don't read Japanese, you need to find a reliable person who understands Japanese and is willing to help you. You have to give her/him your personal information to order the bags, so be careful whom you ask!

My 14 year old daughter is pregnant, How to deal with her school?

harold

My 14 year old daughter is pregnant and is starting to get a bump. I know its wrong but what should i do about it and her school...? People are going to notice it soon.

Answer
There are sooooo many pregnant girls at school its not even funny anymore but people don't pick on them or anything. 14 is a little young, girls at school are like 16, 17, 18 or so. People always help them with their bags and down the stairs and stuff, I don't think you need to homeschool her or anything.

And as bad as it is, my GF's friend got pregnant at 14 and got an abortion and that was the end of it instead of her life taking a huge detour.

Any ideaaaas? School party?

G

We're going to have a party at our school (similar to a a disco). Most of the time people don't dance, because they are embarrassed or something, so they go outside.
Are there any good games for teenagers? I mean truth and dare and stuff.. but something that makes FUN and that doesn't need a lot of material?
Thanks :)
by the way: we're 14/15 years old! :P

Answer
I'm 14 years old, (soon to be 15), and I know if I was at party. Some fun games I'd like to play that require minimum material are:
Ninja (If you don't know what that game is, please add that info and I will explain it.)
Truth or Dare (With boundaries)
Hum and See (This is a game where you write a bunch of songs on pieces of paper, and make sure there are two of each song, then put them in a hat (Bag, etc.) then everybody picks one out. Then, without showing anyone your paper go up to someone and hum your song to them. If they think they have it, they'll hum back and confirm it. The first person to find someone else with their song wins! Obviously they should be popular songs that everyone knows.)
Jumping Contest (This will get all the guys testosterone levels way high. Guys love to test their athletic abilities against each other. For this contest, have two people stand across from each other and put their hands out so that their fingertips are touching each other, so they kind of create a human bar with their arms. Then just raise and lower it to what you think is appropriate. Mix it up to, ya know. Diving jumps, 360 jumps, funny face jumps all that jazz.
Have a great party and a FUN time!

How were root cellars used back in the day and how would I prepare mine now for an emergency/pandemic situatio?

troubledin

I have two root cellars in separate rooms with concrete walls off to the sides of my main cellar. I was thinking about preparing one of them in case of an emergency situation like a pandemic or other catastrophic event where my infant daughter and I would be stuck inside my basement for some time. Neither root cellar has any windows, just concrete walls and one currently has boards covering the dirt floor. I would very much appreciate the help and advice. Thanks!

Oh, and I live in CT, if that helps.

Answer
One of the reasons why root cellars are so effective in preserving food is the exposed dirt services of the floor and walls. What happens is that there is a gas exchange between the earth and the air, keeping the levels of gases that the fruits and vegetables give off from building up. Fruits and vegetables give off these gases (usually acetylene or carbon dioxide) to determine if they are in an enclosed space, if the gases build up, the fruits germinate, vegetables and the food portion of fruits decompose. This is why they sell those green bags to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer, they are porous to the gases that the fruits and vegetables give off.

The problem about preparing for emergencies is that you can't predict in advance what the emergency will be and when it will occur. With the current pandemic risk, arrangements to telecommute, face masks, hand cleaners and some tinned foods should be plenty. Your child isn't school age and so long as she's kept out of daycare, she won't be a vector for the flu. Just avoid places where people gather such as movie theatres, schools, universities, malls, and mass transit.

Not everything stops during a pandemic so the worse case would be ordering MRE's over the internet and having them dropped off on your porch by UPS. If you have a business, you have to prepare for having as much as 30% of your work force unable to report to work hence telecommuting becomes important.

Graphics jobs for a 16-year-old?

Ryan

I'm looking to attempt to start a graphic design career, and I need some advice on what to do. I want to get a job relating to my interest field. Does anyone know anything I could do? And if you have any other suggestions for things I could do to jump-start my career, any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hello

The two things I've learned that are the basics for breaking into graphic design are education in design principles and education in technology.

You really need to start with the basics. A good short college course could cover that. I spent four years in college, but I know plenty of good designers that went to art school or even community school. Here you will learn principles of design, color and art. I wouldn't be afraid to pick up a drawing class, either. You would be shocked at how often you will have to draw (with vector programs) in a print production job.

Secondly, familiarize yourself with the technology. This will help you transition your art knowledge into the workspace of Illustrator, CorelDraw or what-have-you. Get time in front of both Macs and PCs if you can. Learn how to get the mouse to create what you have envisioned.

The mistake that I see a lot of young designers make is that their egos get in the way of being objective about their own work. They think they are all that and a bag of chips and will not accept critique on their work. This, however, is one of the most important parts of becoming a good designer. I got torn down so many times in colllege by my art teachers that it forced me to pull myself up to the level they wanted me to be at. I'm all the better for it. When I went into college, I thought I had a grasp on everything. I was about as far from it as I could have been.

The best thing I've done for my career was to get a job at a small print shop. Seriously. At a small business, you will be expected to take on a number of roles, all of which will give you different fields of experience and will make your portfolio massively diverse. In my position I do production art for textiles, design catalogs and create the websites. I also am given personal projects from sales. This is surely a trial by fire, but it gives you an inside look at a lot of different facets of graphic design. In addition to this, you get to see a lot of logos come through and you will quickly learn what logos are good and which logos aren't.

Also, the other graphic designers at said small company will be able to train you and educate you in anything you need help with. I had no print production experience before I came here, but now I know that it is what I want to do with my career. I learned all about seperations, using spot color, four-color process, trapping and more while on the job. Learning things hands-on is much more useful than learning from a textbook, IMHO.

Finally I think that it might be important to take all of this "process," "communication" and "sensibility" stuff with a grain of salt. Yes, it IS important and should be developed while you are learning the basics. In the end, however, the customer will either know exactly what they want (even if it is a bad design) or they will just want it to "look pretty."

The real talent comes in taking the dual priorities of sensibility and pleasing the customer and then combining them and creating a great product.

Hope this helps to shpe your future
thanks

Backpack leashes for kids?

Hailey Ric

What is your thought on those? Are they cruel or useful?

My twins(who are 15 months old and have been walking since 7 months!) have them.

Mikey has a monkey
And Xavier has a puppy dog.

Now if you are a parent of twins, you know that it's hard to go anywhere while holding both of their hands and at 15 months they would rather walk then ride in a stroller.

Also, when you hold their hand, their arm is up pretty high and it's bound to start hurting their arm. So what do you think about them?
Just because the kids know not to run off doesn't mean someone wont decide to take the child. There are some sick people out there that will just snatch a kid up. I have 7 children! Ages 15, 10, 7, 4, the twins 15 months and a 1 month old. I don't have the kind of peace of mind parents of 1 or 2 children have.

Also, it gives the kids some freedom. Not a lot. But enough. Obviously you don't pull them around on a leash like a dog.

Answer
I have no problem with them. I have 4, soon to be 5 young kids, so I know what it's like to have a bunch of toddlers running around. You want to give them some freedom, but you don't want them to run into the street or get lost. My 4-year-old daughter has one, and it works well because sometimes she'll want to walk/run at her own pace, so it ensures that she can do that without getting into trouble.

Webkinz Are For Younger Kids?? Right?

Elizabeth

My Younger Niece Is turning 12 years old and Is Practically ADDICTED to Webkinz. I understand how they are cute and everything and how you might want to collect them and everything, but She told me that she goes on to her account EVERY DAY! And my Sister (Or her Mom) said she is allowed to go onto other websites, but will go onto Webkinz Mostly all Day. My Oldest Daughter who's 2 Has a Webkinz Jr. Account, Which I can Understand, But I honestly think Webkinz were meant for Kids under 10. Shes starting Middle school and her mom is also worried she'll be bullied too because of all of the Accessories she carried in her backpack & folder in the 5th grade. I'm a little worried, too. She's Really Sensitive! Does anyone else think Webkinz are only OK for kids under 10? Maybe 11?

Answer
Gaw~ I used to love Webkinz.
Although Webkinz is a game aimed towards younger children, many "tweens" and teens will play it, the same way they wear Dora the Explorer backpacks and watch Blue's Clues.
In some places, it's quite common to like things that kids like. Where I live, it's considered silly, cute, and actually somewhat cool.

TL;DR: Although Webkinz is FOR younger kids, it's not limited to just that age group.

Bags with wheels VS backpacks for school?

Lili B

Okay, so what is your opinion on using a bag with wheels for school, only for bringing lot's of books from home and taking them home... And yes, I am aware that lockers exist, but unfortunately my school gives tons of homework... so I have to take most of my stuff home. So what are your opinions? Any recommendations on stylish bags with wheels are welcomed.
Ok, great answers, but please remember it's for taking books home and back not for in between classes... and I don't take the bus nor walk to school.

Answer
Like people have said already, bags with wheels are clunky and hard to maneuver -- and what are you going to do if it snows or rains a lot and you need to get your books to the car? If you use a bag with wheels, you might have to worry about it rolling into a puddle or getting dirty or getting it up and down stairs (royal PITA especially if it's heavy)... with a backpack, though, you don't have to worry about any of these things.

I would recommend getting a backpack. If you have too many books to carry in your backpack / arms, I would suggest using a tote bag to hold extra books that don't fit... and wherever possible, you can copy down problems from the book or do homework during free time at school so you can leave a book or two at school.

Should I Get a rolling backpack for middle school?

Chloe

Hi, Im going into 7th grade (middle school) and they have 6 periods, and no lockers!!!

Should I get a rolling backpack or is that to nerdy, or a good way to get made fun of?

THANKS!!!

PS: Please include links for backpacks I might enjoy!

Answer
No it is best not to. When you leave k-6 where I'm from you are considered to big for a rolling book bag it is seen as childish and yes you will get made fun a lot. To be safe get a regular two strap book bag. normally in 7-12 where there's 6 periods you wont need to pack a lot of stuff. like in grade school on the first day your book bag was seconds from bursting with all the supplies you had inside of it. That is not the case in 7-12 book bags usually nothing at all or at least a pencil, pen and some paper on the first day and you do not need much. With Your school though it might be OK since the no locker thing (not to be mean but what middle school has no lockers are u a private school kid or something just wondering?) I don't have many book bag links Amazon would help probably but any book bag should do from any store that sells them.

How heavy should a school bag be for a 13 year old?

y0gh4rtl0v

Hello, I'm 13 years old and I have heavy backpack which causes lots of trouble for my back. How heavy should a backpack be for a 13 year old?

Answer
Through elementary and middle school I had big backpacks, while I hated them they straightened my spine (lol). When I got to highschool I had a very thin backpack you could say, I had a notebook some pens/pencils a folder with work in it and that was it, who needs anything more? All less than 3lbs. Many younger mids have bigger heavier backpacks because their parents find it "necessary" for them to have big ass backpacks with a million pockets. To sum this up TL;DR just keep the basics in your bag, don't haul 3 math books and a boulder you found at lunch in your backpack.

I am looking for a school bag for like 2 heavy books and the budget is £20-£30?

Natalia

In the uk and I'm in year 9

Answer
I have recently purchased a new bag for school its called 'mi-pac' these bags are brilliant, they come in a range of colours/designs and spacey and cost me around £22 :)

I manage to fit all my books, lunch, p.e kit and a few other bits in ... http://www.mi-pac.com/

What would happen at a middle school if a student their committed suicide at home?

Losasha

I am not going to do it, I am just curious what the school would do. (Teachers & kids, etc.)
i meant "there"

Answer
I can relate. [Somewhat.] Because in our school, St. Paul, just a year ago [2007], we had a 1st grader that was kidnapped, and raped. Her body's disposal wasn't pleasant; her limbs have been cut off and were stuffed inside her stroller bag.

[This was in the news in Philippines. I'm serious when I say she's a 1st grader. The school was SPCP; If you know that.]

I know this isn't 'suicide', but it still has the concept of what would happen if a student was killed somewhere other than inside the school. I'll tell you what our school did -- the Principals raised the security levels by threefold, and the school became more private than it ever was. No one can come in or out without a verification from the student being fetched, or without any form of identification. No ID, no entry.

I guess it was weird... a 1st grader, and her nanny was an accomplice. Her dad was the one that instructed, I heard. She was headed to a a Math-enhancement program when things, well, you know.

[Long answer, I know.]

I need help for the first day of school!?

thebigfish

i just moved in to US this june and i'm going to school at september , im from Philippines which is alot different from here . Also, im going to school as a sophomore, so please, can i have any tips on what should i wear? or what bag should i get? what clubs to join? or what should i do to prevent myself from having a bad time for highschool . thank you :D
also , im 15 and im a guy .

Answer
Be yourself! Don't try to be a clone of all the other kids. After the first day, you'll see what the others are wearing and then you can dress in a similar style, but still maintain your individuality.

Relax and be friendly - the second day will be better!

How gud is animation in india???

pavan varm

i am gonna plan 4 animation cource..
so please tell me hw gud id tht nd suggest me some international animation schools or inistutes to start my animation career.

Answer
As the above answer , there are some good training centers in India, and for animation India is one of the best destination to learn and start your career, lot of international animation companies are started and identifying India as the best spot for the business, few already started like Sony Image works, Chennai, Dream works Coming in Bangalore, Walt Disney planning in trivandrum, Tonnz animation, Trivandrum, Soo its a great time to learn and start your career in India.....why thinking international, now India is moving and overriding international markets,if the cost factor is not important, then go ahead, but now you will get the same level of training in India for half the cost.Learn some specialized stuff rather than bag full of software's, First understand which area is interesting for you or love to work like 2D, 3D , VFX and put extra effort to specialize on that.

Some good and Specialized Training Centers :
Whistling Woods, NID, Illusions School of Digital Art ( opening soon).

Best wishes for a great career in animation.

Children's boxed (or bagged) lunches....?

Coco & Boo

Just curious, as the school year is coming near, I am planning on sending my daughter's lunch with her more often and am thinking of different HEALTHY lunches I can make. I don't want to bore her with the same lunch everyday...so, please everyone, tell me what YOU send or plan to send with your child in their lunch boxes *drink included if you send one*!

Answer
Lunchables are NOT all that healthy -- they have lots of sodium etc.

Main dishes:

* Tuna sandwich wrap with light mayonnaise, lettuce and tomatoes
* Egg salad sandwich on whole grain bread
* Peanut butter, cashew, or almond butter with a 100 percent fruit spread on whole grain bread (a healthier PB&J)
* Sliced turkey, lean roast beef, or chicken from the deli--or left over from last night's dinner--with light mayonnaise, mustard, and a slice of cheese

My kids have insulated lunchboxes and I have 8 oz metal insulated containers in which I send between late fall and early spring:

soups and stews
leftover casseroles
a treat of hot cocoa or cider

Treats:

a couple of Hershey`s kisses
a fun size candy bar
a sweet granola bar
a small handful of chocolate or butterscotch chips
a bar or brownie or cookie

Drinks:

Usually water. They can buy milk or chocolate milk at school.

Sides:

* Send a salad in a small plastic container. Keep the dressing on the side in a separate smaller container. (I do this for a main dish for my 12 year old daughter adding meat and cheese cubes to make it a chef salad -- the boys do not like it as well).
* Cheese sticks go well with sandwiches and are a good source of calcium.
* Whole grain snack crackers add a nice crunch and lots of healthy fiber.
* Make a fruit salad with grapes, melons chunks, and blueberries.
* Dried fruit, like raisins, dried cranberries or banana chips
* Nuts like almonds, cashews, or walnuts
* Pack a cold pasta salad or potato salad.
* Baby carrots or celery sticks or cucumber strips with a small container of vegetable dip
* Crunchy raw green beans with a small container of ranch or french onion dip
* Flavored yogurt -- I get a large container of vanilla organic yogurt and mix in finely chopped fruit and put about 1/4-1/2 cup in a small plastic container -- much less expensive and more fruity than the individual containers.

What is the best lunch box/bag for high school?

Proboscis

I need a good lunch box/bag for high school. I always bring my lunch because the school food is disgusting, and I do not want (i.e., will NEVER use) a brown paper bag. I do not want a lunch bag that is too childish/girlish/cute and I don't want to be embarrassed carrying or using my lunch box.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Dream about saving a little boy?

It's Leah!

In my dream I was at some sort of school (maybe a college or university) and there was an attack at the school. Students and families were trying to escape and we were running up the staircase to escape the danger.
Then I see a little blonde boy who is no more than four years old, who is being pushed around and abused by his family. So I pick him up, carry him in my arms and decide to take care of him. His family didn't try to stop me.
My friends and I finally escape the building and we go to the nearest subway station. On the way to buy the tickets for the little boy, some money falls out of my bag and gets suck under someone's shoe.
I try to get the person's attention but she kept walking away. Luckly I still had plenty of money to buy the boy a ticket for the subway.
When I return to buy the ticket for the little boy, one of the workers at the station returns the little boy to me (he found him sleeping somewhere when I was running after my money) so I take the boy back in my arms and we all manage to escape.

What does this mean?

Answer
Are you trying to figure out a way to pay for schooling? Do you have plans to attend college but are unsure of how to afford it?
The little boy probably represents the possibility of a new life at school. You see your dream as being in jeopardy because of a shortage of money or an inability of your family to help you out financially. Although it is an uphill battle (climbing the staircase), you have managed to accumulate some "savings".
The journey toward school (subway station) is threatened because of someone unwittingly costing you some money. Although the hit to your finances was a minor setback (money stepped on by woman) you can still manage the cost (tuition, books, etc). Although you may have been unaware of what was going on (the little boy sleeping) it was brought to your attention and your plan is seeming to work out (managing to escape).

Suggestions for improving this chapter?

ChristianT

I am 15 years old and I am trying to write a novel. This is the chapter I just finished drafting where the main character, a twelve year old girl, meets the other girls in her class at her new school and starts deciding what she thinks about them. I don't have anyone else to ask about it other than my dad who doesn't read this kind of book and hasn't ever given me any useful feedback, so I'm posting it here.

Chapter 3, make friends -4/10/10

Emily looked out at her new classroom. Emily and her teacher were the only fare skinned people in the room. The teacher introduced Emily, or tried to. "Ki oru class,â She said, but was immediately intterupted by a loud chorus of âItâs ki oraâ To Emily the first pronounciation sounded better, but the teacher corrected herself and went on. âKi ora class, Today we have a new classmate, your name, is?â
âEmily.â said Emily.
âWell, itâs nice to meet you Emily.â Said the teacher. âYou can call me Mrs. Finn. Ok, please find a seat Emily.â Emily walked in the gap between the desks that went through the middle of the classroom. The desks were lined up width-wise in groups of three, there were a couple of spare seats to choose from. A girl whose long-brown-with-highlights hair was tied in a ponytail waved to Emily.
"Emily, sit over here" Said the girl. Emily sat down next to the girl.
"My nameâs Jo, And this is Tania." Said the girl. On the other side of Jo was a chubby girl with very dark skin and black hair tied in a top knot, or Emily thought that was what it was called. Sheâd never seen one before.
âHello Jo, hello Tania, nice to meet you" said Emily.
Jo looked like she was about to reply, but Mrs. Finn stopped them
âQuiet now, itâs time for mathâ
Mrs Finn handed out math sheets to the students. Emily thought she would like Mrs Fyn.

Later, after being relesed for recess, Emily followed Jo and Tania out of the classroom. Both of them stopped in the room where the bags were kept and stood there facing four other girls. âWhereâd ja come from Emilyâ asked one of them âIâm from Christchurchâ Emily said. âDid you move because of the earthquake?â she asked, grabbing a pink backpack from a hook.
âYes,â said Emily,
my parents got really upset and then we went to stay with my granma in Wellington, my Mum decided she would rather stay in Wellington but we have to wait for the insurance company to pay us and all the good houses in Wellington were really expensive, so she brought a house out here cause they seem to be cheaper here.â
âThatâs cause nobody wants to live hereâ said Jo. The girl with the pink backpack pulled out a small package. âAtawhai Can I have one?â asked Tania âSure, Ya want one Jo, oh yeah you donât smokeâ WHAT! thought Emily, How can they be smoking,
âisnât that illegalâ Emily said out loud.â¨âYeah Atawhaiâ said one of the other girls, in a teasing voice âIsnât that Illegalâ
âWhy would it be illegal?â asked Atawhai.
âUnderaged smoking?â Emily guessed. She wasnât sure if there was a legal age limit for smoking, but she knew kids werenât allowed to buy cigeretts.
Jo said she didnât care, âjust give me my *swearword* smokeâ
except she actually said the word.
Once Shellyâs older sister had been caught smoking in high school, And sheâd been expeled. Emily had never encountered kids her own age smoking, and she thought it was discusting.
âItâs a smoke free school.â Emily said, âOnce my friends sister was caught smoking...â
âThere not smoking at schoolâ said Jo, âTheyll go outside into the car parkâ
âYeah, well, see yaâ said Atawhai, as she and Jo walked off.
âArnât you allowed to smoke?â Asked Tania, she was talking to Emily.
âNoâ said Emily.
âAre you allowed to do drugs?â
âOf course not! said Emilyâ
âAre you allowed to drink?â
âOnly in comunionâ
âDo you go to church?â One of the other girls intterupted
âYesâ Said Emily
Tania ignoored her
âAre you allowed to swear?â
âNoâ said Emily.
âAre you allowed to gamble?â â¨âCan you quit it with the dumb questions, Iâm not a bad personâ said Emily.
âOhâ Said Tania, and she walked away
Emily walked out and sat at a picnic table. âWhere am I?â she thought.

Answer
When you're using dialogue, and you're putting 'said Emily', or something after the quotes, put a comma at the end of the speech, and uncapitalize the word 'said'. Example;

"My feet hurt," said Eddie.

If the dialogue is a question, replace the comma with a question mark. If it's an exclamation, use an exclamation mark. Different examples;

"Don't you hate it when your feet hurt?" wined Eddie.
"My feet are killing me!" shouted Eddie.

If it's obvious who's saying the words, you don't even have to put the person's name afterwords. Example;

Eddie was sitting in his chair, bent over, rubbing his feet. "I wish I'd never went out for that really long walk!"

Also, when a new person is talking, start a new paragraph.
Don't do this;
"My name is Sarah," said Sarah. "My name is Eddie," said Eddie.
Do this;
"My name is Sarah," said Sarah.
"My name is Eddie," said Eddie.

Alsooo, make sure to indent with every new paragraph!! There are several grammatical errors as well, such as when you said 'There not smoking", it should say "They're not smoking", as in 'they are'. 'There' is a destination word. Don't always say 'said', either. It makes your writing sound bland and boring, and makes the characters sound unemotional. Try to switch it up a bit, use words like 'exclaimed', 'shouted', 'laughed', 'pouted', 'moaned', ect.

There's a lot more to mention but I'm just gonna leave it at that! :D Good luck!

Naomi

hi i start next week. and i to go shopping tomorrow. what girls usually wear? i just moved here from india.

and brands.also what type of bag should i buy for school?

Answer
Most people wear plain jeans and jackets. You can wear whatever you want though but for your first days you can just dress normally so that you get the idea of what everyone else is wearing. Look out for comfortable things that you feel good in yourself so that you feel confident on your first days here Also, buy loadss of accessories so that you can mix and match your outfits. As for bags, you can buy bags from every shop. Get a big, spacious one to hold your stuff.
Hope This Helps, GOOD LUCK :D

First day of school outfit ideas?

Liz

I start school on Wednesday, and I'm torn between two outfits. One is a pair of shiny black leggings (kind of like fake leather) and a yellow and grey striped tank top (it sounds lame, but it's really cute) and either flip flops or flats. The other one is the same shirt and shoes, but with yoga pants. Which outfit should I wear? Which shoes should I go for? Also, I have a normal backpack and a tote bag, so which should I use? Thanks!
Skinny yoga pants, not regular yoga pants. They look exactly like leggingns. And I barely own and dresses or skirts, so that's out.

Answer
It's soo much easier with a school uniform it isn't even funny. I had school uniforms for half of my life and the other half without. The first day is only a half-day so don't waste the cutest outfit for a half-day. Since it's still hot, wearing something casual and still a little summery would be okay. In fact, wearing summer stuff (vs. traditional 'back-to-school'-ish clothes that are more fall/autumnal) would be cute and the most comfortable.

I always avoided wearing brand-new stuff in the first week of school because it seemed funny to me to see so many kids with their brand-new, back-to-school clothes and shiny, new backpacks. I always thought it was much cooler to not do that. I would wear a really faded and distressed pair of jeans with a tank and flip-flops when it was still hot. Basically, what I would wear if I was just out & about before school started that year.

I don't know if you're a dress kind of person but I always wore little cotton dresses like this with flip-flops or flats (or Keds) for the first couple weeks of school. It's what everyone wore (southern California)

The bumblebee tank and yoga pants with flip flops (unless school dress code says NO to flip-flops.. some do) sounds cute.. with the tote bag and a cute pair of sunglasses. (would also be cute with a pair of skinny cargo's). Maybe even a dab of suntan oil on your arms so you smell like summer!

Middle school PLEASE AWNSER?

Hey I'm gonna go to 6th grade in two days and I need to know these things:
⢠what to wear
⢠what to do
⢠make up ( do not tell me I'm to young)
⢠what's lame and what's not
⢠what backpack to use
⢠how to be cool/funny
AND ANY THING ELSE WOULD BE GREAT CAN YOU MAKE IT A LONG LIST WHOEVER HAS THE LONGEST AND MOST HELPFUL LIST WILL GET 100points

Answer
Here's some background information to me so I feel like a big sister. I'm a 16-year-old in high school and in grade 6, I had no trouble fitting in. I know it's hard to transition into a different school and you want people to like you, but in the end, you shouldn't really spend too much time on how to be this or how to be that. Be yourself because someone in school will love you for you.

Now here's the list. I'm guessing you're 12, right?
WHAT TO WEAR:
-A basic t-shirt with skinny jeans and vans or converse. For a nice tough, have a plaid shirt wrapped around your waist. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/p480x480/942670_10151228134272185_1691722831_n.jpg

-For a girly touch, wear a nice tee with high-waisted shorts and your hair in a braid.

-Wear a comfy sweater with jeans

-A white tee, blue jeans and a scarf

-Sweat pants with a tank top

MAKE UP:
I know you don't want to hear that you're too young. You're not but I don't suggest you do winged eyeliner or anything that older girls do because growing up too fast SUCKS. (Believe me, I wish I could go back to middle school. Growing up is a pain.)
-Curl your eyelashes and wear mascara

-Wear a nice pink lip stick/lip gloss

-You can use BB cream (a cream that moisturizes your face and makes skin tones even)

Sorry, but that's how far you should be going with makeup when you're 12.

WHAT BACKPACK TO USE:
-You can use the typical Jansport bag. http://www.golfstandbags.info/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Jansport-school-bags.jpg

-You can also use a messenger bag which has one strap and you put it over your shoulder. http://www.collegefashion.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/MessengerBags.png

WHAT'S LAME AND WHAT'S NOT:
-Saying "swag", "yolo" and essentially making it look like you're trying too hard. Do you know what I mean? Here, I'll show you examples.

Trying too hard: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7ucbaTDIc1rbcn4jo1_500.png

Not trying too hard: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaoD79T_D7PlUiTESSifVfqUzggUr0nWAQuzTdYKNMsGg2vH-LGRKWT744ued8-MTvEx-H32r_2k4KPscx7iInTlafBBbCpqYAlSNV0NBIqp578qRgRWyubIdVCmDe-Ln1834P2n1-3QU/s1600/tumblr_lz3gpeA95U1r1fzbso1_1280.jpg

People who try too hard, we call "hypebeasts" and "bops". These people are the ones who think "swag" is cool when "swag" is overrated. Sorry, not sorry.

-Doing drugs, smoking, partying, making out with guys. Promise me you won't do that because you will REGRET it.

-What's NOT lame is being yourself, being nice to others, the simple things that school teaches you. Actually do your work and aim for success because those people who slack in school are the ones that could be serving you at McDonalds.

WHAT TO DO/HOW TO BE COOL OR FUNNY
Like I said earlier. You should always be yourself and do what you love. Don't do something because other people are doing it and it's "cool". Trends come and go and those things you thought were "cool" suddenly become lame. You make your own decisions based on what YOU think is best. To be cool or funny, don't even try. Just carry on a normal conversation like you usually do. People say I'm naturally funny but when I actually try, I'm not funny.

*SPECIAL ADVICE FROM ME: Just because you have lots of friends, doesn't mean they're all going to be nice behind your back. As you get older, you start to lose the friends you once had. My suggestion is to be friends with people you like, not people who are "popular" or "cool". If you don't like how someone acts, don't be fake. Just stop talking to them. In the end, you only have a few close friends and those are the true friends.

BE CLASSY, NOT TRASHY!
Good luck in middle school :)
