What is a good game to play with 7 year olds?

best backpack for kids image

4646

It is going to be played outside. I was thinking a relay race where I split the group (of 15) into two and have them put tissue boxes on their feet. My mom thinks I should play guess what's in my backpack where they choose an item in their backpack and the kids ask 10 questions about it then have 4 guesses. Which one would work better? Any new suggestions?

Answer
Out of these two I would say relay race kids tend to have a lot of energy and get bored easy so something that involves running around and involves everyone is always best the more exciting you can make it the better

Where do people usually get their The North Face backpacks and apparel?

t2024ut

Okay, EVERYONE at school has The North Face jackets and backpacks (even the poorer kids). Where do they get them for so cheap? I try to keep up with the trends but this one everyone seems to know about and Im sorta left out lol.

So where can I find a huge selection on The North Face backpacks and jackets (physical store, not online)?

Answer
D i c k s Sporting Goods :)
that is where i got mine, the backpack was like 60/70 and my jacket was 100/130..

They want more from life than to flip burgers. How do I rip them out of this state of ennui?

Answer
Two of my friends' sons are in the midst of this process. Even with a great deal of help and research from their parents, they still got stalled at various points. The applications are complicated, their essays need to be looked at by other people for criticism and editing, and financial aid forms are a nightmare, worse than income taxes. It seems as though college applications are an obstacle course designed to weed out students who aren't truly dedicated.

I'm afraid that many schools' deadlines for Fall 2010 admission have already passed. There's a reason why so many kids just throw up their hands and enroll in their local community college, hoping they can get into a four-year college later. I've read that the number of kids who want to go to community colleges in California far exceeds the capacity of those schools. However, many of them are like 13th and 14th year high schools. Their academic standards aren't very challenging, so many four-year colleges won't be impressed by anything less than a 4.0 average.

My advice: Make an appointment yourself to talk with a guidance counselor at your student's high school. Ask what is possible at this late date. Ask about what books are available that evaluate colleges and would help find a good fit for your student. Ask about second-semester admissions. I think you'll have to step up and do some of the heavy lifting here. It's really too much for a high school student to do all alone.

You'll need to explain to your student in words of one syllable that he or she WILL be flipping burgers (or an equivalent job) to earn spending money and to save for college incidentals such as pizzas and movies, from the day they graduate from high school until they get into college. They won't be sunning themselves by the swimming pool or backpacking around Europe!

What should I bring to my first day of high school?

What should I bring on the first day of high school? I'm going to be a freshmen and I'm extremely nervous. Any advice. Thanks in advance.

Answer
just bring pencils/pens, paper, and a folder. thats it!
these are tips that i've been giving freshmen lately...
TIPS:
- don't be scared/nervous/worried... high school is not that big of a deal
- get a map of the school so you don't get lost... but don't walk around the school with it in front of your face
- don't ask upperclassmen for help if you're lost (ask a teacher or friend) cuz they might point you in the wrong direction
- don't stop in the middle of the hallways
- join clubs/sports... trust me it's an easy way to make friends and it looks good on college applications
- don't run to lunch
- don't be intimidated by upperclassmen
- don't tell your boyfriend you 'love' him in the same week you started dating him.
- on the first day don't wear you hollister shirt, hollister pants, hollister flipflops, and carrying your hollister bag... you will have freshman written all over you and don't wear too much makeup/accesories... just wear something simple but cute :) and honestly nobody gives a crap about what you wear
- it is possible to fall UP the stairs... lol. but if this (or something like this) does happen don't be embarrassed... just laugh at yourself and walk away cuz its no big deal
- please don't be an immature freshman
- make good grades (don't screw it up freshman year cuz you WILL regret it)
- don't come to school on the first day with your huge backpack full of colored pencils, glue sticks, tissue boxes... you don't need all that crap you're in high school now. all you need for the first day is paper, pencils, and a folder
- there is no pool on top of the school
- if someone offers you an elevator pass.... don't buy it!!!
- don't be the annoying kid who always cracks immature jokes in class. teachers hate that. always be nice to the teachers cuz one day when you are a senior they will help you write college reccomendation letters and you will be glad that you behaved in their class.
- don't decorate your locker (nobody at my school decorates them)
- don't start talking to random uppperclassmen like they are your best friend
- don't be afraid to make new friends! even with the people you thought you hated. your in high school now and people change. everyone deserves a second chance.
- don't talk about your UPPERCLASSMEN friends cuz you can tell someone is a freshman when they say "my SENIOR friend..... blah blah blah" it doesn't matter what grade they are in! all of your friends are PEOPLE.
- don't talk about how "cool" you think you are cuz your finally in high school
- upperclassmen have other things to worry about and they could care less about freshmen.... if people do pick on you they will most likely be sophomores: they think they have the right to pick on you cuz they're not freshman anymore..... but i think if a sophomore picks on you that is pathetic cuz they are only a year older than you.
- be prepared for freshman friday!!!! nahhh i'm just kidding it doesn't exist.... and any rumors you hear are all FAKE! nothing scary happens... and high school is nothing like the movies.

good luck :)

class of 2010!

I don't mean clothes, I need creative answers!

Answer
Okay. I just finished middle school, it's cool.

1. Whiteout... and MORE whiteout!! It's the best boredom buster as the person above me said.

2. A Texas Instruments Calculator cos they have games on them!! Excellent for when you are bored during math class.

3. Get an original bag, like from Eastpak or something

4. Tons of gum. Or mentos. Or Tic Tacs. Or anything that makes you breath smell nice.

5. USB Flash Drive and a backup one (I always used to lose mine 0__o )

6. Funky badges/iPod cover etcc to make your bag and accessories more fun looking

7. Zit Cream!!!!!!!! Or cover up!! Nothing's worse than a zit at the start of homeroom with nothing to do about it.. xD

Hope that helped! XOXOX

where can I get a bag/purse like this?

WhiteShado

I want a bag like the Buckle Flap Cereal Box from wet seal, but just a little bigger.
I wouldnt mind if it was made of a different meterial or something because im looking for a bag I could use for school

To look at this bag you can just search Buckle Flap Cereal Box

Answer
For something that looks similar to the bag above, go for a Balenciaga:
http://www.balenciaga.com/en_US/shop-products/accessories/women/handbags/classic/balenciaga-classic-gold-velo_804834716.html

The above links takes you to a specific bag, but you could explore others.

Another is Eastpak, and I'm guessing you are familiar with it. The link:
http://www.eastpak.com/uk-en/shoulderbags.html

Another is Jansport, and the following link takes you to a bag I though had a hint of your chosen bag:

I hope this helped.

Why do students in high school not care what kind of backpack others carry?

Onyx

When I was a freshman last year, I noticed that the upper classes had odd choices in terms of backpacks. Like, someone will carry a freaking ninja turtle pack that's made for little kids, a Mario backpack or even an adventure time backpack. It was sort of funny, and I felt much more free to be myself. Basically, nobody had the same one because they were entirely based on personality. Is my high school the only one that has students that really don't care what other people carry? I'd always heard high school was full of fake people and, even though that's slightly true, its not at all bad like I had first expected.

Answer
No one cares at my school except for ONE thing.

Do NOT use a rolling backpack. It gets in the way of others and trips people and looks very "nerdy" so... yeah.

Other than that, they dont care. Some have backpacks for kids, shoulder bags, gucci bags, messenger bags, string bags, or no backpacks at all!

Alright, I'm just seeking a little help-chat from someone.
I just need to get this out of myself and ask the world what should/can/may do!
Ok, I'm an 8th grader, I have ADD, and I'm mostly a B or sometimes C student (83%'s & 75%'s).
I can do really well on tests if I study hard and have interest in the subject, sadly I don't.
My problem, even the teachers confronted to my parents, is that I NEVER DO MY HOMEWORK.
I'm doing O.K. on tests, average, just a bit more studying should make them better, but I RARELY GIVE MY HOMEWORK IN TIME.
Listen, I just don't know!
I always get distracted!
I always forget!
I just get carried away with relaxing, going outside and playing some soccer, or even just staying inside all day and being on the internet!
Right now, I have history homework and science homework that's due tommorow.
I'm not going to complain or whine how I can get motivation, I just need some tips or someone to criticize me or tell me what's wrong with me! I just can never keep track of time of me doing my homework! Even today 1/3/2011 @ 10:25PM I just discovered tommorow I have school!
I never have interest in history or science or math or anything else, my only true passion is of being a Lawyer. I always win arguements. I always find up some good-nice cute excuse to the teachers of letting me an extra day to complete my project or that my flash-drive with all my documents dropped out of my backpack in my carpool ride or whatever. I know, I need to have very good grades to pass the exams in highschool to get in a lawyer school, and of me just winning arguements and being a good liar is only a probability of 2% of being a lawyer (I can be specific, but I just want to get down to the point).
1) I always forget of completing assignments on time (I rarely do complete them on the assigned day).
2) I always get distracted by the internet, watching videos on youtube or going on failblog.org or whatever, I'm just...I don't know, I'm LAZY to get up, be a man and deal with my homework and complete them.
3) I just need some tips or adivce or even some criticizm of whats wrong with me or what I need to do!
4) I have a MAJOR, and when I say MAJOR, I seriously mean MAJOR habbit of completing homework at night (2:00AM-4:00AM), and I despite myself for doing this because I need minimum 6 hours a day to sleep or else I become tired and fall-asleep during classes.
5) What I would greatly appreciate, and I really will do as much possible as I can on answers.yahoo.com to reward or assist that person in my power that has been through the same phase that I am currently in and replies to me with feelings he/she at that time and how he/she overcame it.
I will at the end always do my homework at midnight, and I'm just tired of this habbit!
Please respond maturely.
Last check:
1) I have a habbit of completing homework at night (2:00AM-4:00AM) and I need advice or tips how to overcome it.
2) I always forget when assignments are due and I have a problem of keeping track in time.

Please notice: All that I am asking is advice or tips of how I can start being a normal kid, of how I can just get on with it and do my homework as soon as I get home from school!
I'm really just an average 13 year-old teenager, my only problem is keeping track of time, completing my assignments on time, and a habbit of completing my homework very late at night.
Please once again, mature responces only.
You will greatly help another neighbor in-need, and I hope that if your advice or tips do help me, that may God reward you someday (I'm sorry if you are an Atheist, I respect you all and I have no urge or need to change your belief. All of us have our own rights of choosing our own path.) Please if you are an Atheist and you are understanding or understood with what I am going through, please don't be offended. Please share your opinion and ignore my ''may God reward you someday'' part, I go to a Catholic private school, so I am who I am.
Alright, I'm so sorry, I got a bit over-carried XD
Anyways, please respond.
I will greatly appreciate it.

Answer
You are a normal kid. With diff rent needs. Here are a few tips. Get a small timer and time yourself. Set aside a set time to start and finish home work. Do you have a watch? This is a very help full tool as well. Keep your school work organized use folders. Keep your environment as organized as possible. Relaxing music is also very help full. If you have ADD by law you are not to be held to the same standards as the other students. Tell your parents to go to the school and have the modify your requirements on an IEP the Individualized Education Plan to enable you to have less home work. No child should be up struggling so late at night with home work.

Answer
As long as it does not take over your soul and you can leave it all behind when the time comes, be as material as you wish. It isn't going to hurt to watch a big screen TV, if that TV tells you it's time to secretly join a militia because the police state just announced itself on CNN.
Learn to carry a backpack stuffed with what you need when the time comes, learn to walk through nature and enjoy what it has to offer, know that the time may come when you are living out here somewhere, maybe in the mountains, and that the socialists have given your house Ala "Doctor Zhivago" style to its own friends.
If the world falls further in to Platonic/Kantian/Hegelian/Marxist philosophy, there will be a "shit storm."
The rain is already falling in a near steady hail of bullets on campuses and in other heinous crimes.

has anyone travelled on their own to the cold northern europe?

ELIN *

any tips? like cheap backpacking holidays and safe and best places to see?

Answer
Northern Europe is generally very safe, so you really don`t have to worry.
Unfortunately almost everything is more expensive than in most other European countries. I usually stay at youth hostels (most people there are actually in their twenties or older, you don`t have to worry about hordes of school kids) and many of them have self-service kitchens, so you can prepare your own meals. If you wnat to eat out, there is always McDonalds, BurgerKing & Co ;-) but i.e. Chinese restaurants are not that expensive. I`m not sure about the other countries, but in Sweden many restaurants offer a Day`s Special (Dagens Rätt) for lunch at very reasonable prices.
I`m totally in love with both Helsinki and Stockholm, both beautifully located with a rich culture. Oslo is also nice, but clearly ranked third in my book. In Norway I prefer the city of Bergen and then there are of course the fjords - Geiranger is one of the most spectacular places on earth! In Sweden the region of Dalarna is supposed to be the number one tourist location and it is nice, but I prefer the region in between the two big lakes (Vaenern and Vaettern), Smaland in the south or the island Gotland. All nordic countries with the exception of the capitals and one or two more major cities are a perfect spot for people who love nature and are a little adventerous.
Okay, Denmark isn`t quite that "wild", Copenhagen is great and then there are beautiful islands and beaches.
Iceland is different and a real gem, but VERY expensive, so probably not your budget vacation.
In all countries you can expect that most people speak very good English, so you won`t have any real communictaion problems. You are likely to find out that you`ll even be able to understand a lot of the written language in Norway, Sweden and Denmark (not in Finland, but the country - just like Canada - is officially bilingual, so most signs are Finnish and Swedish) and find your way around.
Hope that helps!

school bags under $30 image
Q. Im 15 years old.
Important a girl and i want to know what time to sleep at.
School starts in a few weeks and i have to get up at 6:30-7:00am. To catch my bus.
I have terrible bags under my eyes and i got to bed around 4am.
I need more sleep. My room is upstairs and i can always hear people talking and walking cleaning etc so I go to bed after 12.
What time should I sleep at?

Answer
9:30 or 10 would be best, but no later than 10:30. You need 8+ hours of sleep as a teenager. Since school is coming soon, you should start adjusting your sleep schedule now. Gradually change when you go to bed and get up over the next few weeks so it is easier to transition.

How do I get rid of bags under my eyes?

Natalie

im 16 and i tend to always get bags under my eyes. I use concealer to make it less noticable but i have contacts so i rub my eyes quite a bit throughout the day.My bags are purple too. Is it because of lack of sleep? I usually sleep at like 11-1130 on school days and wake up at 7 15.

Answer
teenagers need more sleep than adults. Teenagers need 8 1/2 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Try going to sleep at 9:30-10:00 if you're going to be waking up at 7:00.
Also, on the weekends, keep your sleep schedule. And, when you OVER sleep, it can make you even MORE tired (you'll look it, too)

I had the same problem, but i had it when i was around 13. I'm 17 and it kinda has gone away, When i'm tired they come back, of course, and they are kinda sorta there all the time (just not purple all the time, mostly just and indentation)

it might be the way your face is. If you have big eyes or something, that may just be the way your face is formed.

Try putting ice on them or cold spoons to reduce the swelling under your eyes. thats what i used to do.

OH! and i would buy those creams that are made for older people who are starting to get bags and dark circles under their eyes, but i was 13! They work if you use them continuously. You can buy them at any drug store- i got mine at kmart, target, etc.

ps. im in seventh grade and if u have any more organization tips too that would be great!!!

Answer
Have you asked if your school will lend you an extra set of textbooks to leave at home? Then you can have one to keep at school and another to use in doing homework. A lot of schools are allowing this option because so many children are damaging their backs.

Otherwise, see if you can purchase extra copies of the books to keep at home. Then you should be able to get rid of most of the weight.

Also, some students use rolling bags, like the kind that pilots and stewardesses and other frequent travellers use for their carry-on luggage on airplanes; they have wheels and a handle that can be pulled out to use or pushed in to save space. They may be a bit pricey, but it is much easier to push that weight around than it is to lug it on your back.

For the future, you might suggest that your school look into getting copies of textbooks on CDs for students to use at home. I know some kids who have classes where there are textbooks that are kept in the classroom for classroom use and the students are given the choice of a heavy textbook or a CD to use at home for homework. You might try suggesting that idea to the schoolboard. (They may really like it if you mention that it will lessen the likelyhood of them being sued for injuring some poor student's back from such heavy loads.)

Good luck.

How can I get my parents to let me buy a hedgehog?

Poop

It is the perfect pet for me. My parents would just have to pitch in a bit for buying the actual hedgehog. I would buy half of the hedgehog, we already have a cage, you can just shred newspaper for bedding, they eat one bags of cat food like every 3 months that I would pay for, clean them in the sink with a toothbrush and some animal safe shampoo once a month which I would pay for, and they just need a wheel and a hut. I have tried making power points and graphs and their thinking about it but when they say that that means no. Please tell me how to convince them to let me get one

Answer
Tell them that everyone at school has one. Then show them this answer. BTW Parents, I told him to say this, so get the kid a hedgehog.

I am looking to start doing some lightweight hiking and camping and I am looking for a good internal frame pack that will hold enough clothing and equipment for my 7year old son and I for 2 days. If anyone has any input I would be most thankful.

Brian

Answer
a lightweight pack for 2 is going to be a little tough
if you pack a tent and two sleeping bags and pads, you are going to need some volume
I have a Jansport that is around 4200 cu in and It works pretty good for a 3 day trip in summer or 2 day in winter if weather is mild
try info at REI
they also carry some pretty good stuff
Campmor has some good prices
the best bet on a pack is to get all your stuff together that you think you will take and pack it all down to camping supply store and see what fits

What are some good jobs that would allow me to go backpacking, and have limited contact with other people?

Shinigami

Something I could start doing after 2 years training in community college or even work my way up from the bottom if I got hired right now, or something I could do after taking a NOLS course? Studying animals, plants, trees, rocks, trail maintenance? Where do I begin? I can't work with the public or any sort of policing/rangering isn't my style, nor anything more dangerous than hiking/backpacking. I can't teach kids or give speeches. I could write reports, make observations, do hard work, but not Sherpa style, and no internships or volunteering which are against my philosophy. Have I whittled it down to nothing?
My philosophy is that I get paid for my efforts in life.
Yeah, not even a clue. I don't even know where to begin?

Answer
I know theres places in the Smokey Mountains like around Ober Gatlinburg that will pay you about 200,000 a year to live in a cabin on the mountain to just...well watch the mountain lol...but you pretty much have to stay there...thats about all I know though...don't know many details about it or how to go about getting hired...I know if they could run dsl/cable out there I might do it lol

Answer
Dude, you are asking for to much xD

I live in Auckland too :D We should go shopping! hahaha

First of all, go to hottopics website because you can get everything you listed there.. pretty much.

Gloomy Bear, Domo, Skelanimals stuff can all be found at JayJays.

Lime Green Skinny Jeans - JayJays. Or online because JayJays doesn't always have them instock.

Chucks and Vans can be found at the obvious places where we buy shoes -.- You're not that stupid!

Make up can be bought at the pharmacy..

JayJays has black skinnies for sure. All year round I'd say.

Hot Topic. That's the place to get those sorts of bags.

Why my 10yrs old bro goes Violante when his cub board or school bag is touched?

school bags big

school bags big image

teen15teen

He messes around with my cupboard and all my belongings including my dresses and school bag. (I am 15 girl). I never fight him. But if I touch his cupboard or school bag, he litterally jumps on me and shouts and makes a big scene. I know he has nothing strange or offensive with him (I check his belongings when is not around... LOL. If he know that I am dead for the day... LOL) I do not understand why he goes sooooooo wild when he has nothing to hide?

Answer
Because they are HIS things. My brother did the same thing at that age. He was very protective of the things that HE had and I was not to touch them at any cost. They were mostly pokemon cards, baseball cards, etc., but he was afraid of losing them because he worked so hard to get them.
Talk to your parents about stopping him from going through your cupboard, and don't go through his.

How should I decorate my school bag?

Ninjabot

Got a new school bag, a plain army style satchel. I was wondering how I should decorate it for school?

I really want to reflect my style on it. I've searched it up on google, but they all suggest is drawing all over it, gluing glitter and piper cleaners to it. Frankly, that sounds awful.

Im a big fan of doctor who, Sherlock, Harry potter, and lord of the rings. And I want to incorporate this in my design. I've already stuck some badges to it, but it doesn't seem enough.

I was searching for iron on or sew on patches of the TARDIS, 221B, the one ring and all that. But I cant find any!

I had an idea, one I really wanted to do. I was planning to make a dangly charm thing for my zip. Including metal charms of my fave fandoms. If you know anywhere that sells metal TARDIS charms, 221B, deathly gallows signs etc. please tell me!

Answer
add charms to the zip and loads of badges
Add neon patches to it

Does anyone have ideas for an alternative to a Party Favor bag?

school bags for kids target

school bags for kids target image
Q. My 5 yr old daughters bday is coming up. Party favor bags are fun, and deemed necessary for proper party ettiquete. However they are expensive, and basically filled with usless crap. I am wondering if there is an alternative? Perhaps something small and with more worth then candy or cheap crappy toys, that is fairly inexpensive that I can give out as a parting gift?
Thanks

Answer
I totally agree. I call those goody bags full of cheap plastic junk "bags of crap". We can all do without another bag 'o crap. Most of it I throw away anyway within a day of my kids bringing them home. I have done books as well; trickier with 5's as most of them aren't reading yet, but I've bought boxed sets from the Scholastic book orders the schools send home and given those books out; they end up being about $2 each. I will give a book with a fancy lollipop (hard to describe but it's on a 10" stick with a heart or flower shaped candy piece at the end. That way there's still the candy element but not so much that it's overkill. With 5's you need to assume a parent will read the book; go with something with mass appeal like Strawberry Shortcake. Maybe if you go the book route you can consider those paint with water books.

I've also given out seasonally appropriate t-shirts; one of my daughter's birthday is in May and I have given out patriotic tshirts (in stores for Memorial Day, continue wearing all summer/4th of July.) These shirts are easy to find at Target for $5; a little less at Kohls if you use a coupon. Again I package with a lolipop. I have seen them on kids all summer. Other friends who feel the same way have given out hula hoops, those skip-it things (like a jumprope that attaches to your ankle and has a ball at the end), and a stuffed fairy. There are a lot of perfectly cute toys out there in the $5 range; too cheap to give as a gift but perfect as a "party favor" which is what you are giving instead of a bag of crap.

Five year olds might not "get it" right away as to why they aren't getting a plastic bag filled with yo-yos that don't work, teeny paper pads they don't use, etc. but it's fine to explain you are giving "one nice thing" instead of a bunch of "little stuff your mom just throws out".

How much do you usually spend on back to school shopping, just for moms of 2 or more kids?

Magali

I have 3 kids ages 8, 7, 6 and so far i have spend $65 on just school supplies, i still need clothes and shoes and backpacks and so forth so how much do you spend?

Answer
I have 2 kids (7 and 5) and I'm hoping that I can get by with spending $300 together for clothes, shoes, and school supplies. Right now most of the supplies are on sale for like $.15, $.25, and $1.00. Book bags usually cost us around $15-$20. I do still buy all their clothes from like Wal-Mart, Target, or other stores if I can get them on sale or decently cheap especially since by Christmas they'll probably need new clothes anyways. I'm also hoping I can find shoes on sale at Shoe Carnival or some other good shoe store.

A survey question for all junior high/high school students: How heavy is your backpack?

Alan S

If you are related to a student, you may answer as well. And please state his (or their) grade, also.

P.S. Also state for how long you carry the backpack around and how much your back hurts (if at all) after carrying it.

Answer
My bag was 22 pounds when I was around 14 years old. It was crazy to lug that much weight to school everyday. It hurt quite a lot in the beginning. Luckily, I didn't have to bear with it for long as my parents bought me an ergonomic bag- it reduces the pressure on the back (if i'm not mistaken) so I wouldn't have to hunch. It was a godsend.

You can go to this website for more info on ergonomic bags:

Good camera for photograpy?

Faith

I am 14 and very interested in photography. I was wondering what would be a good starter camera? Nothing to expensive but takes good pictures. Also are there any tips and tricks you know about photography? Anything else I should get besides a camera? I hopefully will be taking a class for photography next school year :)

Answer
Nikon and Canon are as good as each other overall. Each makes equally excellent lenses at the same price points, and each makes DSLRs with the same technical quality in each format. The differences lie in ergonomics and how well each camera handles, which is what allows you to get your photo â or miss it forever. Anyone who tries to tell you that one brand or the other is significantly better than the other in basic quality is incorrect.

1. Donât go crazy buying the most expensive equipment right away.

Itâs possible to get very nice photos with an inexpensive point and shoot. See these examples on Flickr. The more photos you take, the more youâll know about what kind of camera to get when itâs time to upgrade.

2. Consider a tripod.

On the other hand, an inexpensive tripod is worth getting, especially if you have shaky hands like mine. When I got a tripod, my satisfaction with my shots skyrocketed. For even more stability, use your cameraâs timer function with a tripod (read our introduction to tripods).

3. Keep your camera with you all the time.

Photo ops often come when you least expect it. If you can keep your equipment relatively simple â just a small camera bag and a tripod â you might be able to take advantage of some of those unexpected opportunities. Or, if your phone has a camera, use it to take ânotesâ on scenes youâd like to return to with your regular camera.

4. Make a list of shots youâd like to get.

For those times you canât carry your camera around, keep a small notebook to jot down places youâd like to come back and photograph. Make sure to note any important details, like the lighting, so you can come back at the same time of day or when the weatherâs right. If you donât want to carry a notebook, send yourself an email using your cell phone with Jott.com.

5. Donât overlook mundane subjects for photography.

You might not see anything interesting to photograph in your living room or your backyard, but try looking at familiar surroundings with fresh eyes. You might catch an interesting trick of the light or find some unexpected wildflowers in your yard. Often a simple subject makes the best shot.

6. Enjoy the learning process.

The best part of having a hobby like photography is never running out of things to learn. Inspiration is all around you. Look at everything with the eyes of a photographer and youâll see opportunities you never noticed before.

7. Take advantage of free resources to learn.

Browse through Flickr or websites like the Digital Photography School Forum for inspiration and tips. Also, your local library probably has a wealth of books on all types of photography. If youâre interested in learning about post-processing, give free software like the GIMP a try.

8. Experiment with your cameraâs settings.

Your point and shoot may be more flexible and powerful than you know. Read the manual for help deciphering all those little symbols. As you explore, try shooting your subjects with multiple settings to learn what effects you like. When youâre looking at your photos on a computer, you can check the EXIF data (usually in the fileâs properties) to recall the settings you used.

9. Learn the basic rules.

The amount of information about photography online can be overwhelming. Start with a few articles on composition. Be open to what more experienced photographers have to say about technique. You have to know the rules before you can break them.

10. Take photos regularly.

Try to photograph something every day. If you canât do that, make sure you take time to practice regularly, so you donât forget what youâve learned. An excellent way to motivate yourself is by doing the weekly assignments in the DPS Forum.

11. Donât be afraid to experiment.

If youâre using a digital camera, the cost of errors is free. Go crazy â you might end up with something you like. Youâll certainly learn a lot in the process.

How many of you have participated, organized or called for our troops to be bought home from iraq? Y not?

Polarized

Most know Iraq was a mistake. Innocent people are dying, our brothers, sisters, husbands and wives are coming home in body bags. Kids and innocent Iraqis are in the crossfire. We spend billions in blood money, and cant take care of ourselves. Once looked up to now we are despised. Our healthcare is sickening in itself. Are you trying to change things? Do you care? Organize in schools, churches or any meeting places. Look up the facts and act. So my question is who really cares? And whos all talk.

Answer
I don't agree, but when I first started reading your question...I thought it was going to be one about volunteering to put together packages for the troops or sending them letters and personal care packages.

I have! I guess, I'll ask that question!

I think your question BLOWS! See mine!

At what age do you stop giving loot bags? Also, what can you put in a loot bag for older kids?

fishtail19

My twins are having their 10th birthday party tomorrow. It will be a mix of boys/girls. The party is at a cooking school and they make a spaghetti dinner, garlic bread, and get to enjoy their creations along with a birthday cake. Apparently they each get to decorate and take home 2 cupcakes, but there are no loot bags. So now we're wondering if we should put something together. And what would you put in loot bags for kids that age?

Answer
You don't need loot bags if they are taking something home. But generally, once they are out of elementary school, so at about 11 years of age we stopped the loot bags. i have a teen boy and girl and this is what we do now...for the boys I put out big bowls of various candy and they load up (after pizza or burgers). For my daughter something we started doing that has now become a tradition and everybody looks forward to: I buy packages plain white t-shirts, like Hanes or Fruit of the Loom. Tulip tye dye coloring of various colors (get at a craft store) and they will all tye dye their own shirts. They absolutely love it and they have something to take home. They will all wear their shirts to school on the same day.
