looking for a school/laptop bag?

hi i am looking for a bag for school that will hold a 15.6" laptop and some books any suggestions would be very helpful

Answer
You can try Amazon.com or Walmart.com or simply go into Walmart but my best guess is that amazon will most likely have what you are looking for. Also try ebay.com they have almost everything, if you can't find it on ebay then it doesn't exist.

does this bag look big enough to use for school?

any feedback will help please!!

Answer
I'm not sure how big they are. Anyway~! =)

The first bag looks okay. More like something you'd wear when you're with your friends at the mall. Anyway, I think it's fine. As long as it's big enough, it should be okay. It has to be able to handle quite a few textbooks if you're in middle school, though. If you're in high school... you should just change :S

The second bag looks okay, too. However, it's, like... strap? Is that what you call it? That's very long, and if you have books in there and stuff, it'll really hurt your shoulder (where the strap is). I wouldn't recommend that.

I like the third back the best. Probably because it's darker colored.

However, I like your taste and I think maybe the first one would be the best for school. It's like a backpack, right? Make sure it's big enough.

RHH: What 2011 EP Should My Girlfriend Review?

Trylemma (

My girlfriend is gonna review an EP for the blog, which would you like to see?

Also, my first review, on Death Grip's "Ex-Military" is up on the blog. Cognautic Creix's first review on Hail Mary Mallon's "Are You Gonna Eat That" will be up tomorrow. Be sure to check out The Kid With The Turtle Backpack's review on Count Bass D and Insight's "The Risk Takers" which is up as well.

Here's the blog,

savingelliotbrown. tumblr.com/
Doesn't matter, it just needs to be from 2011...
@Erowid: Yeah, I did. It didn't make a huge impression on me, but it was fine. I probably won't get around to reviewing it...

Thanks for the rec again!

The Kid With The Turtle Backpack's review of the album is up on the blog (find it in my profile)

Answer
Listened to it 3 times so far. I liked it the first time; the next two times I didn't like it but I could still appreciate it. Lyrics are good, beats are good enough, subject matter got a little tiresome but that was to be expected, always hated the running "radio takeover" theme. Disposable Heroes is one of the best songs of the year IMO and the rest are basically just good or mediocre. Overall: 7/10

I'll check the blog. Oh, and Cognautic, if you happen to see this, that was a really good review you did on the Aesop album. I didn't hear it yet but I'll check it out now.

Can I bring a child backpack carrier on an airplane?

Mamaof2

We are going on a flight to Hawaii aboard Delta and I want to use a backpack child carrier (Chico brand) through the airport as opposed to an umbrella stroller. Will Delta let me carry it on? Its a little bulky when fully extended, but the legs fold inward. Its about the size of a small suitcase when compacted.

Answer
See whats they said

Strollers & Child Restraint Seats
Strollers will be checked for free and are not counted as part of the standard baggage allowance.

Strollers may be checked at curbside, the ticket counter, or at the gate.

If you want to use a child restraint seat or stroller to transport your child through the airport, that's fine.

Strollers need to be checked at the gate by a Delta agent. Child restraint seats may be checked, or in certain cases, they may be brought on board:

What if there is an open seat on your row?
If there's an open passenger seat in your row, you may place your child in an FAA-approved child restraint in that seat during take-off and landing

However, Delta can't guarantee that a seat will remain open. If you want to be sure a seat will be available, you'll have to purchase a ticket. If an empty passenger seat is not available for your child restraint, the child restraint will have to be checked at the gate by a Delta agent.

Do ppl carry backpacks at college?

diamondgir

I haven't been in school for awhile, could somebody tell me what girls carry their books in at college? And if they do use bookbags, where do I find ones that don't have bratz dolls on them? lol

Answer
Yes people still wear backpacks in college, but usually strung over one shoulder ... kinda cool-like. :)

I'd get an "Eastpak" I think it's called. They are pretty ok looking and they last for ages! I've had a few of them (high school and college) and still have them!! They still look great, too. My children use them now. Serious. And my husband is finishing up his last year in college and he still has his Eastpak.

I don't think Target sells them. You can definitely find them for sale at the school bookstore, although everything is always more expensive at the college bookstore. :(

And why are the people being so rude!!?? Why the nast remarks. This is a perfectly valid question. I wondered the same thing.
Oh, leather backpacks are cool, too. But I wouldn't go with a leather bag. The Eastpak's are sort of a canvas-like material. They come in attractive colors and they don't look "kiddie". Leather isn't all that durable--it has a tendency to tear after a while.

Anyhow, going back to school in style is cool. Good luck! (And ignore the meanies who have posted). Idiots. *sigh*

Does this backpack look feminine?

Phantomize

'Sup guys and gals! Been looking into buying a backpack, and I've found one from Jansport that I quite like. Here's a picture:

http://images.smarter.com/300x300x15/30/82/9288382.jpg

I'm just wondering if you guys think it looks girly? Gay? I'm a guy and don't really mind it, but you know how middle school kids are, criticising and whatnot.

So, do you think it's okay for a guy to wear? Thanks peeps!
Thanks guys, I'll give the bag a miss then :P

As for shoulder bags, I like them, it's just that with the weight of my books and stuff on one shoulder all day I get a bit sore, so I've decided I have to go for something with more support.

Answer
Honestly? I think its a bit too borderline. Why not go for a shoulder strap bag?
I mean if you like Jansport backpacks go for something more like this one

But personally I like guys with shoulder strap bags.

My daughter starts nursery school in January, what will she need?

Lottie

My little girl is 3 in December and starts nursery school in January :)
We went for a tour a couple of months ago and she is already super excited to go to school. I noticed all the kids coats and backpacks hung up on the pegs and it got me wondering what she'll need to take with her?

They get a cup of milk and a piece of fruit at break time so I don't need to take her a snack.

(We're in the UK btw)

Answer
Your daughter shouldn't need anything!!! (I'm also in the UK)

Then again, it depends on the nursery.
The nursery my twins go to, supply everything.....including spare clothes, drinks & fruit.
But the nursery my cousin's son goes to doesn't supply clothes......it doesn't even matter if YOU supply them, they still call her up to come and change him!!!
So you need to ask about this!

My twins used to take back packs to school.....they were just full of toys......nothing that they actually 'needed'.
The older kids have book bags, as they are allowed to borrow books from the nursery.
All nurseries are different though.

How to be popular guy in middle school?

Anthony

Hello everyone,
I am a boy in 7th grade and i am in middle school. I really want to be popular. Im not really popular but i have alot of friends :/ I know its really dumb to ask everyone how to make myself more, well popular! But i want to know :( Now, i dont want answers like "You have to be yourself." We all know in reality it doesnt matter if you are yourself -.- Thats the reason i am unpopular anyway.

My appearance:
1. I wear alot of graphic tees. I also like jordans, vans and lebrons.
2. I weigh 80 something pounds, maybe 85.
3. http://distilleryimage5.s3.amazonaws.com/798355a8bb0b11e296c422000a9e0891_7.jpg
(you cant really tell how i look but oh well)
4.I have SOME muscle
5. I TRY to exercise alot but cant make any room to!

My personality:
1. I ALWAYS try to be nice.
2. I sometimes call people fat and ugly.
3.I am honest alot.

My way of life:
1. Most people think I am gay because I have a high pitched-ish voice and because i like singing and fashion.
2. I like children things!! Spongebob, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, etc.
3. I might make a journal/diary so i can write down things about my day.

Please answer and help!!
Oh i forgot to add, im not gay.

Answer
Alrighty then, I suppose I am one of the only popular kids who acts different to most if them. Right first of all u need to make sure that u hav good personal hygiene, wash ur hair every day and wear deodorant. Remember to make ur hair look really good cos that is wat most people look at wen they see someone. Look at wat all of the popular kids are wearing and get an idea of wat to get. Try getting a cool backpack and not over filling it. You could ride to school on a bmx or skateboard if possible. Try singling out one them, preferably one that is ur friend already. Become good friends with them and BAM ur friends with the rest. It would probably help if u are good looking, like handsome etc. I don't know what u look like so I don't know if u are or not. I am in the popular group and tbh I am a bit quiet, but people like me like that because they don't know too much about me and they would try to talk to me a bit more. Try finding out what is going on that concerns them and talk about it. Good luck boi

Is it true that 'popular' kids don't wear backpacks?

Addie [

I read that somewhere.
If so, why not?
And how do they carry their books?

I'm just curious.

Thanks.

Answer
Read that in the question about the girl with "only" $175?? me too. I don't know who said that or why, but I don't think it's true. The popular girls at my school have these super cute jansport messenger backpacks. I Think it's fine if popular people carry back packs

iam from lebanon 17 years old boy can i study in america electronic engineering ?? plz help fast?

Moudi

plz help me what i need to go and the amount of money i must have and what college and whats the necessary things i should have plz :D

Answer
What college? There are over 3,000! You need to do your homework. Start by buying Barron's Guide to US Colleges & Universities (buy from amazon, Barron's, etc.)

How much money? Average cost of 4-year degree for Americans is $250,000. Foreign students have expenses Americans do not incur. Use that figure for preliminary planning while you start checking out schools. You need: tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment, high-speed internet access, room & board (which probably includes your internet, but not sign-up for internet review sessions of classes, etc). Add health insurance (mandatory, can run $300-400/month), clothing, laundry, snacks & such (e.g. coffee, etc), entertainment, club memberships, local transportation, all your personal expenses including toiletries, phone. You will need to buy all your sheets, towels, pillows, blankets, bedding, etc, laundry bag/basket, winter clothing & boots, and loads more "stuff." The list of expenses seems endless! That's after you pay for all application fees, transcript fees, test preparation guides & courses, testing fees, postage/courier service. Then there's passport, visa, transportation.

Proof of sufficient funds for all school + living expenses, plus return transportation to your country of citizenship is mandatory to apply for a student visa if you are accepted at a university. You'll need to show at least USD50,000 (lots more for high-cost school) cash to get you through your first school year, plus that your parents' income will cover each additional year - or have all the cash saved up for the entire program.

Start with these. Then we can move on to the next step once you master all this.

Emirates baggage and water?

Q. I'm traveling from NZ-England by Emirates. Is a laptop bag considared a pieceof hand luggage?Im planning on taking a school backpack and a laptop bag with me.(I'm flying economy)

Also bit of a dumb question, but what is the rule with water bottles now? Am i allowed to take a water bottle on?

Answer
Never flown Emirates, or out of NZ, but generally the rules are one piece of carry on luggage, and one personal item. Laptop bags are usually considered a personal item, so the backpack could be the luggage. As long as you have only two items, and they are both relatively small, I think you will have no problems.

As far as water goes, the usual rule is that you cannot take any individual liquid container more than 100 ml through the security check point (you can take multiple 100 ml containers, though, as long as all of them fit within a single, 1 liter zip lock plastic bag). However, you can bring an empty water bottle with you and fill it up from a drinking fountain once you have passed the check point. Of course, you can also purchase water or other drinks from stores once you have pass the check point, too.

Over-Policing & Use of Force, Would putting Police in every childs school be a good or bad idea?

CHECK MY P

-
http://www.educatedontincarcerate.org/the-issues/over-policing
-
In the â90s, after tragic school shootings such as Columbine, in a climate of increasing âtough on crimeâ rhetoric, schools began arming themselves with law enforcement. Today, more than 170 Texas school districts have their own police department. Nationwide, there are nearly twice as many school safety employees as there are counselors in public schools. Many never receive training to learn how to deal with children or work in schools.

What started as a well-meaning effort to protect children has turned some schools into police zones. Schools rely on SROs to deal with minor disciplinary issues. What used to be handled through detentions, warnings by teachers, or a trip to the principalâs office can now lead to entanglement with school police.

In recent years, there have been several high-profile incidents in which children were arrested at school in questionable circumstances. Children as young as five have been led out of classrooms in handcuffs for acting out or scribbling graffiti on desks. Students have been arrested for throwing an eraser at a teacher, breaking a pencil, and having rap lyrics in a locker. These children do not belong in jail.

â 6-Year-Olds Under Arrest (New York Times) READ ARTICLE »
â¢High School Scuffle Exposes a Racial Rift (Los Angeles Times)
The proliferation of SROs also diverts precious resources from education. Some districts spend millions on security, despite the fact that their schools lack basic resources like textbooks and libraries.

SROs are there to protect studentsâ safety. They should only get involved in serious situationsâwhere public safety is in immediate danger.

Studies have found that a punitive approach to discipline doesnât make students behave. Itâs part of what drives them to drop out. Policing children makes them feel like criminals. Whatâs worse, students end up with a criminal record for offenses (chewing gum, talking out of turn, being âdisrespectfulâ) thatâd never rise to the level of a crime if committed by an adult.

The way we punish these offenses has serious repercussions for studentsâ futures. Students can be denied admission to college because of their âcriminalâ records. They may be ineligible for public housing or certain professional licenses because they âhave a record.â

Students begin to feel a sense of inevitability and resignation when it comes to getting in trouble at school or ending up in the juvenile or criminal justice systems.

Answer
There are a lot of schools, mainly in the inner city that already have at least one or two police officers on duty at all times. They also have metal detectors and bag searches and sniffer dogs and the whole nine yards. It is not a pleasant place to go to school or to teach. You don't get into the school building unless you get buzzed in by someone who knows you. Naturally there might be other ways that a maniac might kill schoolchildren indiscriminately, but it is all they can do in the Chicago Public schools to keep children from killing each other, raping each other, or cutting each other up. You bet they have policemen in the building and they need them.

Maybe even schools in the affluent suburbs where people tend to be kinder and gentler to one another need to consider the vulerability of their schools when it comes to rare but possible senseless acts such as the one in Newtown CT. It is hard to predict when or where the next school massacre or cinema massacre will happen, but, apart from disarming a public somewhat justifiably lacking in confidence that the police can or will protect them from harm at all times, it would help if certain measures like the securing of entry into school buildings and possibly security personnel on the premises would not be a waste of school district resources.

What are good girly teenage backpack brands?

aby

I need a well known backpack brand website. The back packs have to be for godly teenagers. More than one would be nice. And website link. 10 points for including 5+ brands of backpacks and the website. Thanks!!!!!

Answer
Jansport, for sure. They have hundreds of patterns to choose from, and a good 70% of kids at my school use this brand, definitely a "godly" brand, haha. > http://www.jansport.com/js_product_thumb.php?cid=1

Roxy, I find this brand of back packs, the most cute and girly. Amazing quality too. > http://www.roxy.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3176247

Billabong, another brand that I really like. > http://www.billabonggirls-usa.com/product-cat/189/backpacks

O'Neil, includes tote bags, but you can scroll to right to see the backpacks > http://www.oneill.com/#/women/americacanada/collection/women/product/all/bags/

L.L. Bean > http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/508666?nav=ln-508666

Dakine, not the most popular, but will definitely last a while. > http://www.dakine.com/w/packs/street-packs/girls#color=9

There are many more brands out there for backpacks. & Well known athletic brands have pretty nice bags too, not the most "girly" though (Puma, Nike, Adidas, Columbia, etc.)

Help on finding a nice school bag?

Natasha Ma

So, I've been scavenging the internet for a good school bag, but I think I need a little help. I'd like either a cute backpack or a nice tote bag that's big enough to hold all of my books. I was looking at the Vera Bradley bags and really liked the size of the bags, but I'm not so into the patterns.
Here are some questions that I'd be very appreciative for you to answer:
What are the best measurements for a tote bag? (I don't want something GIGANTIC, just a nice, spacey size that will hold all of my things.) THIS IS THE INFORMATION I NEED THE MOST.
What's your favorite type of bag to buy for school?
Some links to bags you would suggest?
Thanks so much!

Answer
i really like the vera bradley backpacks.

a lot of kids at my school have them.

Dakine is also popular at my school. you can find them at zumiez, sun and ski, and many sports stores:

they have really cute backpacks.

urban outfitters also has CUTE bags/backpacks:

HELP I WANT TO MISS SCHOOL!!?

Q. i only have 2 days left of school which we get out on the 8th of june and i really want to miss really bad 2morrow just for the fun of it either way i mean thiers no more work to do schools is over... so any 100% tips that will let me miss school like 100% or if possible 200% cuz i really reall dont want to go thanks and please dont judge me im passing grade to 9th.. so yeah i dont lose anything o yeah my friends also want to miss like 4 of them to play on xbox live haha thank you very much form the bottom of your heart tell me a wayi could get really sick or sick enough to still be able to play lol

Answer
lol wow. i think i know the feeling. theres no sure fire way to miss school. you could play sick but your parent might choose to stay home or call you through out the day to check on you. you could miss the bus but the school will most likely call your parent by way of your house phone and or there work phones. you could go to home room, get marked as here, and then simply walk off your school campus when home room is out but that is very risky and if you are caught that will be very hard to make up a believable lie. i would not recommend you to skip school because it can be very addictive... no joke. i started skipping in high school and got in a lot of trouble. it can be a hard Habit to brake. but if you must know... and i am telling you this because it is your last 2 days of school and i will admit the rush is feels good and it can be fun and i think that every one should experience it at least once in their lives... i think you should miss the bus. that way if you folk get a phone call that can be your excuse. it will be a bad excuse but a lot parents will think any excuse for missing school is bad. because it is you last 2 days of school maybe your folks won't care AS much. it all depends on you parents. think of some where to go. mind you, you will be left to do what ever all day. stay away from cop and places infested with cop...like the mall. if you can ditch the book bags. don't do anything to cause attention to yourselves. if your going to some ones house... no drugs, no alcohol, no sex, or anything else illegal for children your age because not only is it bad for you but they can cause you to do stupid things and you are all ready committing a crime by skipping. and lastly getting caught can cause you to go to Juvy and or your parents to go to jail...GET IT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM AND LET THIS BE THE FIRST AND LAST TIME!!!!

All nurseries are different though.

which bag to get for school?

would 7-10 year old kids like a backpack or a duffle bag as a gift?

Shitij-www

I have to give a freebie gift to children aged 7-10 years. I've noticed they either carry a cartoon backpack (Barbie, Ben10, Batman, etc) or a branded backpack (Nike, Adidas, Puma) to school.
Would these kids appreciate a well design backpack or a well design duffle (gym) bag to use for travel and hobby classes.

Answer
I have a 7 year old nephew and he likes this bag pack

Answer
be cool kid. dun worry to much. thats why they say as cool as a cucumber, cause cucumbers dont worry.
1) u prepare for school by having a good nights sleep.
2)maintain grades by paying attention in class and finish whatever homework your teacher throws at you.
3) Be yourself. wear what feels comfortable, not cute
4)google "locker parts/ accessories" or go to ebay/amazon, and search locker
5)personally, I dun like those popular douchebags in my school. dont give a damn about being popular. when youre popular, you have more haters as well. focus more on being a good friend, a friend whos there for the lonely.
6)its not like you will die there.
7&8)follow your heart. however, be sure u have enough time to balance your studies as well

what bags do kids wear in high school?

messenger bag for school?

Chris Summ

ill be starting school soon and i dont wanna look like a dork the way i did in highschool with my backpack, so im thinking about a messenger bag/sling bag. i would prefer something that sits diagonally at the back, and i want something that nothing will fall out of when i'm running around with it like that. any suggestions?

Answer
I would go to the school and see what all the other kids are carrying. Each school is different as to what the "in" thing is. If you do not want look like a dork, find out what others use so you can blend in and stop worrying about something falling out. Just close it up or zip it up. Good Luck Visit the campus and see how others are dressed too and then you will make wise choices. Everything does not have to be bought before you get there

Starting High School? Questions? (:?

Samantha

High I'm starting high school soon and im like SUPER nervous :(

1. Any tips about remembering where your classes are?

2. Is it true that you can take your book bag into your classes with you?

3. For gym do you HAVE to swim, if so for how long?

4. Are the older kids mean to the freshmen?

5. All of my friends are going to different hs's... I'm not exactly a social butterfly but i'm not scared of people, any tips on how to make friends quick and easy?

6. And.. what was your first day like? lol (:

THANK YOU SO MUCHHH! =)

Answer
Lol. Don't worry about high school, it's like middle school except with bigger kids lol xD Well. here's my opinions:

1) you can get a map of the school and just mark or color code them in order. If you don't have a map, just try remember the room numbers, it'll help a lot.

2) Sadly and frankly, no, you can't bring book bags xD. Some schools does, but rarely. Book bags allowed is for college =3

3) I don't think you have to swim. Some people can't even swim! And some are afraid of waters. So, it shouldn't really be mandatory.

4) Haha. Nice question. They aren't really mean, but they do sort of try to show off and tease. But depends on your reputation too =o

5) The best way and easiest way to make friends. Is just by start saying "hi" ^^

6) My first day...lol. Everyone was lost, took forever to get to the right classes. And made some "future to be friends". xD It's LIKE middle school accept, you have more responsibility =o

How do I become a model?

Alissa

I am a 6'3'' girl in my sophomore year of high school and I have been told all through out middle school and high school that I should be a model. I really want to model for Brandy Melville or Hollister but I don't know how they would hire me. Help?

Answer
Well if you want to become a model for Hollister like be on their bags and stuff, you have to work at the store as a model first. Then you can get into the real modeling for Hollister. But you have to be 17 to work there. So in like another year just apply I'm sure you'll get it, and then send your pic into corp :)

High-School: Freshmen Year?

Merika

Next September, I'll be a Newbie Freshman. I seriously have no idea what items I need to be prepare next year...Help, Please??

Answer
I'm so happy that these questions are starting to appear- they're my favourtie kind to answer!!

1) Okay, first things first. Go into school with your OWN set of values and thoughts. I know this is ridiculously cliche, but be yourself! Do not change for anyone. Be your own person, and use your own strengths and fortes so succeed. There's no need to depend on others to make sure you do well. Also, people will like you better if you are your own person. No one likes a fake person who needs to follow. It's quite a nuisance, really.

2) Be prepared for change. I'm honestly not trying to scare you here, but your friends will change. Everyone goes into high school by promising that they'll never change, and by half way through their 4 years, they're completely different. This is not to say that everyone will dramatically change, but everyone will undergo their own transformations, and they may develop habits that you don't appreciate or enjoy.
You'll notice a change in yourself too, and don't try to fight it. But make sure that you're happy with the way you're going. Don't succumb to peer pressure.

3) Expect to lose friends. Again, this is as a result of change. Don't fight it, because it's usually for the best.

4) Expect to gain friends, and meet tons of new, wonderful people.

5) Join lots of teams and clubs. Teams and clubs give you a great opportunity to meet new people with the same interests as you. It is a good basis for conversation starters, and can even lead to you and some others meeting up outside of school.

6) Significant others aren't all that great. Don't force yourself to be unhappy and enter a relationship simply because you want one. It's not nice to mess with your own emotions like that, not to mention toying with someone else's as well.

7) Don't walk slowly in the halls, or randomly stop and take up space. This is quite honestly the most annoying thing anyone could ever do.

8) Focus on school. Your grades are really important, and don't you forget it! Make an effort, and don't blow it off. Pay attention in class, and ask questions if you're unsure. School isn't even that hard.

9) Don't focus only on school. This may seem like a contradiction to my earlier statement, but it's not. You should have a happy medium. Make sure you do well in school, while keeping a nice social life.

10) Don't do drugs. You'll be exposed, but contain yourself. Sure, trying it once or twice isn't a big deal (same thing with drinking), just don't make it a regular habit to the point where it takes over your life.

11) Be nice, sweet, and kind. That being said, don't let anyone walk over you. Stand up for yourself, because you're important and valuable.

12) Be open-minded. Don't judge others, as you wouldn't liked to be judged.

13) I'm not sure if you're a girl or guy, but here it goes. This is mainly for girls. Backpacks are much better than bags or purses. I know the former looks better, but they're a pain to carry. Sadly, I've only just realized this, after having to go through back pains with my current bag because of numerous textbooks.

Here's a couple of things you need for the year:
-pens (red, blue, black, and maybe 1 other colour)
-pencils (whatever type you're comfortable with)
-whiteout
-sticky notes
-notebooks and tons of paper
-binders
-scientific calculators (for specific model info, see your school)
-obviously a pencil case
-erasers
-I don't think you'll need pencil crayons, or glue, but double check based on classes once you receive your schedule.
-highlighters

To be honest, high school isn't even that bad. The work's not too hard (it's really not hard at all), and most people don't even care about what you do because they're so involved in their own thing and lives.

Don't be nervous for the first day, you'll be absolutely fine. Like I said, most people will be too caught up in their own lives and friends to pay you much attention.

Don't over do your outfit for the first day, you set up a false assumption of yourself. That being said, don't take it too easy and look like a bum, because first impressions are very important!

Carry around your schedule for the first few days, because high schools are usually big buildings.

All the best, and have a ton of fun :))

If you need anything else, feel free to email me at anushka02@ymail.com :)

Take care :)

It's not particularly the right bag for a christian school.

How were root cellars used back in the day and how would I prepare mine now for an emergency/pandemic situatio?

troubledin

I have two root cellars in separate rooms with concrete walls off to the sides of my main cellar. I was thinking about preparing one of them in case of an emergency situation like a pandemic or other catastrophic event where my infant daughter and I would be stuck inside my basement for some time. Neither root cellar has any windows, just concrete walls and one currently has boards covering the dirt floor. I would very much appreciate the help and advice. Thanks!

Oh, and I live in CT, if that helps.

Answer
One of the reasons why root cellars are so effective in preserving food is the exposed dirt services of the floor and walls. What happens is that there is a gas exchange between the earth and the air, keeping the levels of gases that the fruits and vegetables give off from building up. Fruits and vegetables give off these gases (usually acetylene or carbon dioxide) to determine if they are in an enclosed space, if the gases build up, the fruits germinate, vegetables and the food portion of fruits decompose. This is why they sell those green bags to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer, they are porous to the gases that the fruits and vegetables give off.

The problem about preparing for emergencies is that you can't predict in advance what the emergency will be and when it will occur. With the current pandemic risk, arrangements to telecommute, face masks, hand cleaners and some tinned foods should be plenty. Your child isn't school age and so long as she's kept out of daycare, she won't be a vector for the flu. Just avoid places where people gather such as movie theatres, schools, universities, malls, and mass transit.

Not everything stops during a pandemic so the worse case would be ordering MRE's over the internet and having them dropped off on your porch by UPS. If you have a business, you have to prepare for having as much as 30% of your work force unable to report to work hence telecommuting becomes important.

Graphics jobs for a 16-year-old?

Ryan

I'm looking to attempt to start a graphic design career, and I need some advice on what to do. I want to get a job relating to my interest field. Does anyone know anything I could do? And if you have any other suggestions for things I could do to jump-start my career, any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hello

The two things I've learned that are the basics for breaking into graphic design are education in design principles and education in technology.

You really need to start with the basics. A good short college course could cover that. I spent four years in college, but I know plenty of good designers that went to art school or even community school. Here you will learn principles of design, color and art. I wouldn't be afraid to pick up a drawing class, either. You would be shocked at how often you will have to draw (with vector programs) in a print production job.

Secondly, familiarize yourself with the technology. This will help you transition your art knowledge into the workspace of Illustrator, CorelDraw or what-have-you. Get time in front of both Macs and PCs if you can. Learn how to get the mouse to create what you have envisioned.

The mistake that I see a lot of young designers make is that their egos get in the way of being objective about their own work. They think they are all that and a bag of chips and will not accept critique on their work. This, however, is one of the most important parts of becoming a good designer. I got torn down so many times in colllege by my art teachers that it forced me to pull myself up to the level they wanted me to be at. I'm all the better for it. When I went into college, I thought I had a grasp on everything. I was about as far from it as I could have been.

The best thing I've done for my career was to get a job at a small print shop. Seriously. At a small business, you will be expected to take on a number of roles, all of which will give you different fields of experience and will make your portfolio massively diverse. In my position I do production art for textiles, design catalogs and create the websites. I also am given personal projects from sales. This is surely a trial by fire, but it gives you an inside look at a lot of different facets of graphic design. In addition to this, you get to see a lot of logos come through and you will quickly learn what logos are good and which logos aren't.

Also, the other graphic designers at said small company will be able to train you and educate you in anything you need help with. I had no print production experience before I came here, but now I know that it is what I want to do with my career. I learned all about seperations, using spot color, four-color process, trapping and more while on the job. Learning things hands-on is much more useful than learning from a textbook, IMHO.

Finally I think that it might be important to take all of this "process," "communication" and "sensibility" stuff with a grain of salt. Yes, it IS important and should be developed while you are learning the basics. In the end, however, the customer will either know exactly what they want (even if it is a bad design) or they will just want it to "look pretty."

The real talent comes in taking the dual priorities of sensibility and pleasing the customer and then combining them and creating a great product.

Hope this helps to shpe your future
thanks

Does being a lawyer suck?

john

I wanna be a lawyer after i go to college
i dont want to end up hating my job
Some people who are lawyers / know lawyers tell me your experiences

Answer
Feedback from Lawyer -Corporate law viewpoints. I would like to add mine.
I love practicing law ... most of the time. I find that practicing law is challenging, interesting, diverse and most of all, ever changing. All together, these qualities make for a truly stimulating career where there is always something new to learn, either because your practice leads you to a new area or industry, or because the law simply changes. I like that often, my clients come to me with something novel that's like a puzzle needs to be solved. Every day, I come up with solutions for my clients. There are occasional days when I want to go home and never come back to work again. but I think that many people in different industries experience that every so often.

The environment in which corporate law is practiced can be brutal. The hours, politics, business generation, juggling and unrelenting pressure of always being at your best, even if it's 3 a.m. after an all-nighter the night before, grate on you. I think that corporate law can be particularly difficult for women for a variety of reasons, one of which is lack of female mentors (and unwillingness of many women who have "made it" hard way to make it easier for women just starting out . There is still a lot of boy's club attitudes and actions out there.

The money can be fantastic. I came out of school with large amount of loans both undergrad and JD/MBA program, which I have pay off over the years I have been well compensated. Thee first few years of practice were a struggle financially, even with high salaries paid to junior lawyers in big NYC firms because of how many loans, high my rent/ expenses. After three years, I was able to buy home, car and begin seriously pay down my loans. One of the most fulfilling moments in my life was when I made those final payments on my student loans. I worked for several years in a large NYC law firm and went in house in search of better work/life balance. I didn't find it at first in house (worked 90+ hours a week for a Fortune 100 company), but, for the most part, I have found some balance now (meaning that I work only 60ish hours a week with regularity, and I can plan vacations and weekends without too much worry).

Practicing corporate law, in my opinion, is not for the faint of heart, for those who merely want to make good money, who don't know what else to do after college or for those who place a lot of priority on their interests/family/friends outside of work -- at least at the beginning. I have made tremendous sacrifices along the way, and there are plenty of people who I've cared about dearly in my life with whom I no longer have much contact. Understandably, many people who are not lawyers, investment bankers, doctors or in similar industries just can't understand why you are always cancelling plans because something suddenly came up or not returning calls because you literally don't have 5 free minutes in a day to do so. I once had to skip the reception at my college roommate's wedding, where I was a bridesmaid, after the ceremony to get back to work.. The hours can be just outrageous, and pulling all-nighters while somehow being expected to function at a high level is not unusual. Planning vacations, weekends, dinners with friends, organization meetings, etc. can be difficult if not impossible. Corporate law firm associates live in fear of that 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon phone call that ruins their weekend at the last minute. Clients can make unreasonable demands and you can't argue, but merely meet their expectations. I've done deals in Japan that required my presence on emergency 3 a.m. phone calls (which I've received at home after getting home from work only an hour or so earlier), and I've flown on a moment's notice to places around the world to deal with whatever issues come up. I used to pretty much keep a bag semi-packed at home so that a car could stop at my apartment for 10 minutes, which was long enough to throw a clean suit into my bag, before rushing to the airport. There was definitely a thrill involved at first, but believe me, it quickly wore off after my third trip in a week to an industrial town two hours outside of Paris.

That all said, I would do it all again. The knowledge and experience that I gained by working through all of the craziness is what allows me to be successful in my job now. I still put in a lot of 10-12 hour workdays, but the work is interesting and challenging and my colleagues and clients are decent, smart and diligent people who also want to have some semblance of a life. That works for me.
