Where can I donate school to kids in need?

GALLLLLL

I have a lot of markers and pencils and school bags that I have barely used. I want to find a foundation that gives those products to kids in need. My supplies aren't right out of the box they came in but they work great and I think any needy kid would greatly appreciate them.! Thanks!!

Answer
Being an educator at the elementary level I can assure you that your local schools have needy children. Call the school, tell them what you have that you want to donate, and take it in. Your caring will be greatly appreciated.

What do primary school kids have in those bags with the school emblem on them?

jumpychees

This applies to the UK. During the past 3 or 4 years, I have seen primary school children taking an A3 sized bag which is the same colour as their school jumpers with the logo on it. They are also carrying a normal school bag and sometimes a lunch box or bag.

As I don't know of anyone with a primary school aged child, I cannot ask them.

Answer
they carry their school reading books that are given to them to read at home, and they take them back to school as they read it to their teacher. also sometimes the work they do at school they are allowed to take them home later

I need a well known backpack brand website. The back packs have to be for godly teenagers. More than one would be nice. And website link. 10 points for including 5+ brands of backpacks and the website. Thanks!!!!!

Answer
Jansport, for sure. They have hundreds of patterns to choose from, and a good 70% of kids at my school use this brand, definitely a "godly" brand, haha. > http://www.jansport.com/js_product_thumb.php?cid=1

Roxy, I find this brand of back packs, the most cute and girly. Amazing quality too. > http://www.roxy.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3176247

Billabong, another brand that I really like. > http://www.billabonggirls-usa.com/product-cat/189/backpacks

O'Neil, includes tote bags, but you can scroll to right to see the backpacks > http://www.oneill.com/#/women/americacanada/collection/women/product/all/bags/

L.L. Bean > http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/508666?nav=ln-508666

Dakine, not the most popular, but will definitely last a while. > http://www.dakine.com/w/packs/street-packs/girls#color=9

There are many more brands out there for backpacks. & Well known athletic brands have pretty nice bags too, not the most "girly" though (Puma, Nike, Adidas, Columbia, etc.)

would 7-10 year old kids like a backpack or a duffle bag as a gift?

Shitij-www

I have to give a freebie gift to children aged 7-10 years. I've noticed they either carry a cartoon backpack (Barbie, Ben10, Batman, etc) or a branded backpack (Nike, Adidas, Puma) to school.
Would these kids appreciate a well design backpack or a well design duffle (gym) bag to use for travel and hobby classes.

Answer
I have a 7 year old nephew and he likes this bag pack

Green Lantern Backpack

If they are 7 year old girls they probably would like a bag pack but more like this

Alex Color A Flower Bag
http://www.amazon.com/Alex-Color-A-Flower-Bag/dp/B001418JJS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1336416221&sr=8-2

i want to know wat are the things we need for establishing a food bank to fight hunger.......
plz dont say we need "food " i want serious replies:)

Answer
Yes, establishing a food bank in a city is feasible. You need some space for office and warehouse, fridges, some vehicle, a telephone, a computer and internet access, a home page. All these can be obtained through donations. But you need lot of volunteers. You must gain from the knowledge and experience of how existing food banks operate. So read on>.....
A food bank is a place where food, both non-perishable goods and perishable goods like fresh produce, frozen items, and baker products, are offered to nonprofit agencies for distribution to people who may not be able to afford food. These agencies are typically non-profit organizations or run as part of a church or community outreach group. A food bank is like the wholesale arm of the food distribution system for those living in poverty. Other agencies are the retail arm and serve people directly. The term "food bank" is not protected by law, however, and is sometimes used by these agencies directly serving those in need of food.
Food banks often get the food from companies or supermarkets with unsaleable stock, and also from donations from the general public, especially around holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition, the US Government and state governments often contract with food banks to distribute USDA surplus commodities. In addition, food banks who are members of America's Second Harvest, the nation's food bank network, are able to take advantage of relationships with major manufacturers. Instead of calling the more than 200 food banks across the country, a manufacturer with several semiloads of product to donate can make just one phone call.

What is a "10 pack" of highlights?

Rhiannon

I called a local beauty school to ask how much it would cost for highlights and a trim. The woman told me that a full color is $35, foil is $30, a cut is $9, and a 10 pack of highlights are $20.

She went on to list other highlight prices.
I have two questions;

(1.) What does she mean by a "10 pack"?
(2.) And are these decent prices? Or are they a little too much?

asking ans

my parents throw a fit when i come home from school because my backpack weighs a ton. i take home almost everything everyday.

i need to find a way to make my backpack lighter but still take home what i need to do my homework.

plz help!!

ps. im in seventh grade and if u have any more organization tips too that would be great!!!

thanx.

Answer
Have you asked if your school will lend you an extra set of textbooks to leave at home? Then you can have one to keep at school and another to use in doing homework. A lot of schools are allowing this option because so many children are damaging their backs.

Otherwise, see if you can purchase extra copies of the books to keep at home. Then you should be able to get rid of most of the weight.

Also, some students use rolling bags, like the kind that pilots and stewardesses and other frequent travellers use for their carry-on luggage on airplanes; they have wheels and a handle that can be pulled out to use or pushed in to save space. They may be a bit pricey, but it is much easier to push that weight around than it is to lug it on your back.

For the future, you might suggest that your school look into getting copies of textbooks on CDs for students to use at home. I know some kids who have classes where there are textbooks that are kept in the classroom for classroom use and the students are given the choice of a heavy textbook or a CD to use at home for homework. You might try suggesting that idea to the schoolboard. (They may really like it if you mention that it will lessen the likelyhood of them being sued for injuring some poor student's back from such heavy loads.)

Good luck.

Why do African Americans where those childish backpacks with Spiderman, Dora the explorer, etc?

Lucifer

There are lots of them at my school, I was wondering why they wear such baby backpacks?

Answer
I've never seen any black people where I live doing that. Maybe just a silly trend in your town. I remember back in the 90's they hung pacifiers around their necks and I thought it was ridiculous. But I think every race and person makes a bad fashion choice at one point or the next. You grow up and you change.

Maybe you should go up to one of them and ask. Let me know -lol

Here's a thought, I know when I was in school, some kids thought it was too dorky to carry their backpacks or folders around, so they'd bring those flimsy pee-chee folders and roll them up. Maybe they think that by wearing childish backpacks it's kind of the same thing. Like if you have to carry a bunch of books around, might as well make a joke out of it. Like "I don't need to wear a big backpack because I'm not a nerd, so instead I'll wear this kid's backpack because I don't take school serious"

okay..my daughter turns 6 on March 17th yes I do know that's st. Patrick's day, and ive already done that whole thing. But her parties have always been family only. Now that she is 6 and has made friends in school I dont have any idea what to do for a party...I need to do it with cost in mind..affordable!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP...
thanks

Answer
You want to keep cost in mind - so set up a theme and play games around that theme. You can revise Pin the Tail on the Donkey to be just about anything. A good game I like to play at my kids parties is Memory. You put a bunch of small things on a tray, let them look at it for 30 seconds, then turn your back and take one thing away. They have to guess what you took away. Also dropping clothespins into a jar, from kneeling on a chair is fun. Beanbag toss, BINGO, etc. Have a 2 hour party so you can play some games, have some cake and open presents. Then give out a loot bag - please no cheap useless dollar store stuff in the loot bag - try a paperback book - maybe Geronimo Stilton or Junie B. Jones. Then send them home! Base your theme on something your daughter likes ... in my house we have done Olympics parties, Egypt, camping, Survivor, Chinese New Year, LEGO, and castles.

what was the worst situation you have been in at school days?

when i was a kid in school , the teacher gave us a H.W and since i was fashel i didn't do it then the next day he came with his book to check the our h.w and put the marks , another teacher came from outside and told our teacher "one min please" so the teacher closed the door and went out of the class to talk with the other teacher so i took his book which he writes the marks on it and hide it on my bag and when the teacher came again to the class , he didn't find his book so he asked the other kids who stole it , no one answered so he said that all of us will get 0 bas el 3yal sam3o el kalma di w 3/4 shawro 3lya

sorry my English isn't that good

Answer
i said it before. my school in egypt had these computers, so our class was divided into groups of 5 and every group shared one computer. well the teacher freezed the connection (so nobody could play) and starting using the projector instead. i told one in the group to take off the connection (plug off that little thing on back of the computer) after compromising that student accepted (bent kanet gabana 7'ales) anyway i started playing solitaire with my friend (there was no internet cuz the connection was frozen from the master computer) but solitaire was better than listening to the teacher. after a while the teacher heard the clicking sound so she turned telling me to show her the monitor, me and my friend had a couple of pictures saved on the computer so we opened one of them, enlarged it and turned the screen for her to check.

How do I get people to know about my Mia Bella Soy Candles?

school bags distributors
on school bag printing pattern kids trolley school bag typeschool bag ...
school bags distributors image

Sunshine

I am trying to find new people to get involved in the Mia Bella business and people to sell the products to. Any ideas?

Answer
Me and My sister just started selling.

-You could register a personal website like we did
NCcandlescents.com
It will help you sell locally or you could add to a search engine.
Search for similar sites and ask if you will give them a link will they link to you. Most will say yes. Visit our site to get a feel for it. Our host is listed at the bottom. They are free for the first month and only $5 after that! Remember that with Mia Bella, you can't sell off your personal site, it has to link back to the one they give you. And you can't use any company photos, logos, or registered names. We took our own pictures that don't show the logos.

-Or you can make up Black and White flyers, fill with your scent samples (use a cheese grater and grate the votives or melts because they are cheaper to order and put them into small ziplock bags and label them) , put in door hanging bags and leave them on people's door around the neighboorhood. You can buy your door hanging bags and tiny 1.5" by 1" ziplock baggies from bagmart.com. They are the cheapest we found.

-You can put an ad in your local newspaper.

-Advertise on craigslist.

-You could email ever teacher, coach, and principal in the area for fundraisers. Just search for the school websites online and all their emails should be listed. Just type up a letter about fundraising (the info can be found in your back office) and tell them if they are interested you can send them a package with more info, a catalog, and scent samples. Also contact local clubs, churches, and daycares.

-Ask all your friends and coworkers if they would like to do a home party. You can make a coulple hundred dollars doing these. We have one relative who is already interested.

-Make up business cards and leave them around town. You can order them cheaply off the internet by a few hundred at a time.

-Type up a letter about retailing your candles in someone else's store. Tell them you could split the profit. Contact stores that already sell candles, especially Yankee and tell them why these are better. My boss owns a restaurant and she is letting me put my candles up for free!

-We also put up the catalogs and a color flyer in the post office, movie rental places, and grocery stores around town.

-Hope that helps. If anyone is interested in signing up selling Mia Bella candles or wants to buy some visit our website. We offer a free start up package for people who become distributors under us. We will send out an information package including a catalog and scent samples for free!

Does this information change your opinion of presidential hopeful Rick Perry?

bad girl

Rick Perry, Godâs Chosen to pray Texas into prosperity, invested as a private citizen in Movie Gallery corporation to the tune of between 5-10k according to his 1995 personal financial reports. Movie Gallery was, at that time, the largest distributor of porn in America, and able to sell and rent regular videos for much cheaper than the competition due to their heady porn profit

Answer
"Perryâs initial investment in Movie Gallery occurred in 1995, but today there is no telling if and how much the governor has tied to the smut sellers. In 1998, Perry moved his investment to a blind trust, meaning the hard investment info is now sealed. Why would he make such a move? It may or may not have had something to do with the American Family Association asking federal investigators to probe into Movie Gallery at that time."

No! I figured him for a dirt bag and he has done nothing to change that impression.

Consider the Texas that Perry holds up to the rest of the nation for admiration. It has the fourth-highest poverty rate of any state. It tied with Mississippi last year for the highest percentage of workers in minimum-wage jobs. It ranks first in adults without high school diplomas. Twenty-six percent of Texans have no health insurance â the highest percentage of medically uninsured residents of any state. It leads the nation in the percentage of children who lack medical insurance. Texas has an inordinate number of employers who provide no insurance to their workers, partly because insurance rates are high, thanks to an absence of regulations.

How do women from other countries carry so much weight on their heads?

backpacks for kids
on Bags, Zip Bags, ZipLoc Bags, ZipLock Bags, Zip-Top Bags, Zip Top Bags ...
backpacks for kids image

jzeb100

The schoo project im doing requires coming up with a solution to help people carry weight that they arent supposed to carry. Average man is supposed to carry 15% of their weight, but many people carry more and backpacks for school kids also cannot hold a lot. Im doing some research and found African woman can hold 70% of their weight on their heads, but how do they do it?

Answer
One reason for the African woman's ability to bear loads effortlessly seems to be her posture. As a girl, she learns to stand so straight that her pelvis and vertebrae line up like a well stacked pile of blocks.

Another reason may lie in her gait. At the beginning of most persons' strides the head bobs up and the body slows; then as the foot moves forward, the head dips and the body accelerates. This bobbing and dipping and accelerating and decelerating requires a lot of effort. But African women put all their energy into moving forward. The vertical motion is absorbed in the bones and soft tissue. Hips bob less than ankles; shoulders bob less than hips; and the head (with its burden) bobs not at all. Thus, while most people bounce along like wagons on egg- shaped wheels, African women move like wagons on round wheels.

I tried putting in some references for you of interesting articles but everytime I do I get ERROR 999!!
Try typing a sentence from above in google to find it. There was also another interesting paper in Nature magazine..

Answer
I don't think she has that right, but you're asking for a bad grade. That's not fair, but you have to be realistic.

Where can I get a really good quality, but still fashionable school bag?

DANCE

I need a good quality bag for college.I bought a bag from Accesorize last Christmas, and it had completely fallen apart by June, so I'm a bit wary about going there for another bag.
I have quite a few heavy books and folders, so it will need to be big and strong enough for this.
I'm not made of money, but I don't want to save a few pounds only to get a bag of a lower quality.
Any help given would be very much appreciated!
Thank you.

Answer
Most girls would want something thatâs strong, can hold all of your books, doesnât hurt your shoulder, and still looks cute! Thatâs a lot of criteria to meet! In my opinion, my friends like tote bags! Tote bags are your cutest & most fashionable option in college bags (at least in my opinion). With tote bags, your possibilities are endless. You can go basic black leather, funky hot pink patent, glittering metallic, and everything in between! Tote bags are very good, because you don't have to just use them for school! You can use them during parties, class, going out. Anything! I hoped it helped!

I am an incoming Freshman going to Fremd High School in Palatine. I don't know what to get though!!
I'm taking honors english, honors biology, honors geometry, French 2 for freshman, Chorus for freshman girls, and World History.
I sound like such a nerd right? lol
I know it probably varies for each teacher but I would like to know what you usually would need for that class.

Thanks!! :D

Answer
both my kids are done with HS. I found it best to wait to buy most supplies. It seems teachers have their own specific needs for the class and I was just running out first week of school buying more supplies.
Get folders, paper, pens and pencils.
Get a really good messenger bag or backpack. LL Bean is a great brand.

Describe being late in class and walking to your seat in a story?

Liann

So here's a girl, she got late in class. I need very descriptive ideas and I'll appreciate every single of it.
Describe how she walks up to her seat and murmurs etc etc.

Answer
Whenever I was late to class in high school, no one ever murmuredânot even if I walked in crying. Usually, it was just silent. Sometimes kids would talk to me as I walked by if the teacher wasn't instructingây'know, they would say, "Where have you been?" and such. I found that kids didn't care too much, overall, even though I was frequently absent or late.
Sometimes teachers get irritated when they're interrupted, but it usually wasn't too big of a deal. Don't forget sometimes you have to go up to the teacher to hand them a hall pass or get the hand out or worksheet that the students are working on.
I'd often have a seat way in the back and I'd have to manuever through all the desks, which was annoying, especially because I had a messenger bag so I kind of had to shuffle through the narrow rows, careful for my bag not to hit any kid or desk (our high school didn't have lockers). And then there's that awkward moment when the kid you sit next to has their backpack or feet on your seat, and they dramatically push them off or drop their feet, looking as if it's some huge inconvenience that you showed up in class. I don't know why those kids never moved their stuff the second the person that sits there walks in, though.

Thanks

Answer
get a shoe box and make a plant cell (they have a hard outer wall surrounding their cell membrane). then maybe tape or glue a plastic bag to the inside to represent the cell membrane. umm, maybe a canned food for the nucleus, you could use something like long licorice for the ER.... make up stuff!! make it fun!!

What are some things to do after school with 5 and 7 year old girls?

rhainnedro

I am looking for things to do in the afternoons with my kids to keep them occupied and give us family time. Now that winter is setting in and it's too cold to play outside, I need some indoor ideas that are cheap and easy to accomplish. I also have a 15 month old son to keep busy. He's not walking yet so that will make a difference in what I can do. All ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Answer
-Arts and Crafts: coloring, cutting, glueing, painting, sponging, model clay etc. I've painted picture frames, mirrors, boxes etc with my kids
-Puppets/Puppet show: decorate paper bags or cut out paper and glue to popsicle sticks. Get a big box, cut a square hole and put on a show.
-Paper/Pillow Dolls: Print out paper dolls and glue googly eyes, string for hair and paper/fabric out for clothes. Or get small pillows and decorate it to be a doll.
-Iron on T-shirts: They can draw pictures on special paper and you can then iron it onto t-shirts. Or get designer pens to just draw onto the t-shirt.
-Collages & Scrap Books: get out pictures of them (or make copies) and let them cut them out and paste them onto paper.
-Beading: necklaces, braclets
-Lanyard
-Baking/cooking cookies, brownies, chocolate lolipops, ricecrispy treats, maybe help you with dinner
-board games
-puzzles. My boys who are around the age of your girls LOVE 3D puzzles
-Shaving Cream Writing: put some shaving cream on a cookie cutter and practice writing letters, numbers, drawing, tic-tac-toe

Best Wishes =]

Writing an essay in school about Austin carlile from Of Mice & Men this is enough detail?

ISEESTARS!

The assignment was to write about one of your hero's so im wroting about Austin from Of Mice & Men,so I'm just making sure I have enough detail(ps happy New Years)
-he was born in Pensacola,Florida on October 27th 1987
-he moved around a few times before settling in Ohio
-he was bullied through out high school,in one instance he was thrown into a garbage can by an older school mate, another incident someone stole Austin's backpack, trashed all his books and dumped them in the snow, then later that day Austin was beaten up by the same kid, smashing his head on a toilet and suffering 3 broken ribs
-in 2006 Austin joined Attack Attack! With founding members Austin Carlile, Ricky Lortz, Andrew Whiting, Nick White,Andrew Wetzel, later having Johnny Franck replace Ricky Lortz and nick white being replaced by John Holgado.in 2008 Caleb Shomo would join the band as well
-Austin came up with the bands name as since they were using screaming as the lead vocals he thought the name needed to be toughened up a little.
-while in Attack Attack! Austin was featured screaming on the bands EP "if guns are outlawed can we use swords instead" and their debut album "someday came suddenly" a week after the albums release Austin was kicked out of Attack Attack! And would his screaming duties would be taken over by then keyboardist Caleb Shomo(now member in the band beartooth)
-after being kicked out of Attack Attack! Austin announced his new project Of Mice & Men in 2009
-in 2010 under the label rise records the band realized their first album entitled "Of Mice & Men" featuring the single second and Sebring which was inspired by Austin's mother
-in 2010 after the release of his new album,Austin had to under go open heart surgery, his heart was on ice for over 2 hours and there was a 30-40% chance he would not have survived the surgery
-he later rejoined the band in 2011 after recovering from the surgery, replacing vocalist Jerry roush. Later that year they released their 2nd album the flood
-Austin has several tattoos, some including a rose on his neck and a realistic heart on his arm, both dedicated to the memory of his mother, who said pasted away when Austin was in his teen years do to a heart condition he also shares.the song Second and Sebring is also dedicated to Austin's mother
-Austin has been a part of 3 bands, call it even a local Ohio band which Austin released a single EP with called "over and done",Attack Attack! And Of Mice & Men
-in the summer or 2012 the band released a deluxe version of their album "the flood" featuring 5 more songs
-after many line up changes the current line up of Of Mice & Men is Austin(unclean vocals)Tino Arteaga(drums)Phil Manansala(lead guitar)Alan Ashby(rhythm guitar) and touring member Aaron pauley(bass/clean vocals) former members of the band include Jerry roush, shayley brougert, jaxin hall and Jon kirtz.
-Austin will be featured on a dvd of his close friend and fellow musician Mitch Lucker's memorial sho

I'm going into 8th grade. Should i get a deluxe, super deluxe, or what? Which is the best made and which looks better? How much more can one hold than the other? What is the difference?

Answer
The super deluxe book pack print. Get the green and blue plaid one. It is cute and durable. I have read many reviews on it, it seems to be able to hold a lot.

Here are the details the website lists.

"Built like a tank" is just one of the hundreds of positive comments we've received about this pack over the years. In fact, if our customers could give it a six-star rating, they would. They tell us the back panel keeps books from digging in and that there are "plenty of places for all the things kids use these days," like iPods® and cell phones. Two binder-size compartments and an organizer panel help you keep your coursework separated.

Shoulder strap now has a pouch for your phone or MP3. Audio cord port lets you easily use your MP3 from inside the bag. Padded back panel, ergonomic shoulder straps and waistbelt. Weatherproof mini-ripstop nylon and reinforced base. 3M⢠Scotchlite⢠Reflective Material piping. Imported.

Capacity 2,250 cu. in.

Weight 1 lb. 10 oz.

Dimensions 17"H x 13"W x 9½"D.

This proves this backpack to be the best choice for you. Have a great 8th grade year! When I was in Eighth Grade I used this one and it worked great. I am a senioor in highschool now and I still have it. Give it a look.

What is the best double stroller out there?

mama2lmjb

What is the best double stroller out of these options::::

Phil & Teds
Baby Jogger City Select Double
Kolcraft Contours
Graco DuoGlider

Any reviews?

Answer
Most definitely the Baby Jogger City Select! I have one myself and I love it for several reasons

1. Can be used as double, or single when one gets too big for it (and then back again if you have another!
2. the option of the bassinet casing for a seat, which later converts back, also love the carseat adapters... very easy to use and remove.
3. Super easy to fold up, and fold FLAT. All in one simple motion
4. Lots of storage options. The storage area underneath expands, and the handlebars have lots of accessory options, including full size backpacks. And, they don't tip even when you have a lot of weight on the handle bars.
5. Very maneuverable. I live in Boston with legendarily uneven sidewalks. I can get around just fine, and without too much bouncing.
6. Accessories: a self leveling drink holder (you have no idea how great that is on hilly roads). Storage cover- compact enough to use as carry-on on international flights. Belly bar- instead of food tray (also available) the belly bar gives something for kids to grab onto and allows them to lean out more. This was perfect for the zoo and watching the duckies go by.
7. Adorable! It does not look like any other stroller out there, yet has a nearly old world charm in the dark colors (I got black). I get questions all the time on it.
8. great if you baby wear- I wore my infant in a wrap while pushing my twins in the stroller. The handlebar was just the right height for me not to struggle.

Downsides? Can be costly to get new accessories, not the best 'jogger' but will do ok, not usually on sale.

Im a junior at high school, and i dont know what to get my girlfriend for valentines day... what should i get her?

Answer
Any of the traditional gifts would be fine: flowers, chocolates, stuffed animal, etc. A lot of schools do candy deliveries to classrooms. Try that.

When I was younger, my boyfriend gave me a stuffed bear, but he hid it in my backpack when I wasn't looking in a class we had together. When I opened my bag in the next class, I found it. It was a very sweet surprise.

what are good ideas to keep a 1yr old and 2/ 1/2 yr old busy at home like crafts and ideas please?

Nikki

i have a 1yr old and a 2 1/2 yr old and im looking for ideas to keep them busy and entertained when its to cold out to go to the park.. any ideas?

Answer
One of the best and easiest activities to do at home with children are sensory bins (about cat box-sized or sweater-storage sized) filled with simple things like water, rice, dry pasta or beans, sand or dirt, and then add in cups and spoons and whatever else you have on hand. Small tins or plastic boxes (from mints or band-aids,) measuring cups, kitchen utensils and other plastic containers and toys are great for pouring, scooping, measuring and sifting. This is a messy project so be prepared for stuff to fall or fly out.

You can always amuse children with empty boxes - from tissue boxes and cereal boxes to larger food or delivery boxes. Boxes can and will become cars, rockets, houses - your child will come up with more. The boxes don't need decoration but windows and doors are a plus. Smaller boxes can become houses for favorite dolls or stuffies, or a school, or a hospital....

Dress up is a favorite activity but keep it simple. Hats and shoes are very desirable, as well as bags, purses and lunch boxes. Playing house is one way that children make sense of the world around them. They will recreate and act out what they see their parents doing before going to work. So use the things that your family uses daily. A table with play food and dishes, or a kitchen set (even one made out of cardboard boxes) will entertain your kids for hours.

And finally, tape large sheets of paper to a wall and let your children go at it with crayons, markers or pens. There is no end to this and children may revisit this day after day. You can change the art media - don't give out too much with this age. Just crayons one day, markers the next, maybe some water color paints the next day.

I just started tutoring a 5th grader who I find out is very bright, but also has a problem 'remembering' to turn assigments in. As a result his grades a poor. I believe he is also ADHD, but do not know the extent (yet). Is there a 'canned' program to help me teach him how to organize what is due the next day? or week? or month?

What I am suspecting is that his parents do not take the time to review weekly or daily even what is due and as a result, they expect the tutor to teach him responsibility!

Answer
this is very simple because of the fact that there are a lot of kids out there that have the same problem about "forgeting" to turn their assignments in.............all you have to do is get this student some sort of planner with each day in it...... then write out the assignments for each day in his planner and tell the student to check off his assignments each morning as he is putting them into his backpack or binder.... and it is also a good idea to give the student a reward for doing a good job with this because it is going to take some time to adjust.... but DO NOT bribe this child.................
good luck:)

HOW do highschool trends start?

Josh

Sperry's, kid backpacks, casual khakhis, moccasins. how do these trends start? do people just watch them on a tv show, or see them in a magazine?

Answer
Sometimes it is from a TV show, sometimes it is from music. Sometimes it is from word of mouth. The Harry Potter series of books originally got bad reviews from book reviews, but kids liked the books and told other kids, and that is what put J. K. Rowling on the map. Sometimes they see something on vacation, and they start doing that also and it just picks up. Sometimes they are trying to copy cat a person, like how Mary Kate and Ashley sold so much stuff. They were the original ones to market to tweens.

Im sending my first and oldest daughter to school a month before her 3rd birthday and I dont know how to handle it. Should I bring her in the first day or should I send her on the bus? Can anyone give me advice on what to do?
Shes in a program called early interventions and she had a speech teacher coming to the house but when they turn 2 yrs 9 months they send them to school for the help. She has a speech delay so she needs to go.

Answer
send her on the bus...that way all the tantrums can end when she is strapped into the bus and it pulls away.

My son was in EI for 12 months for a speech delay too. Here they start preschool at 3 years old, so he went the first school day after he turned 3. Since he had been with me since birth ( no sitters, etc) I really thought he would freak out, but he was fine. They have a harness that you zip them into and it hooks to the bus seat in 4 places...my son is fast asleep and still cannot slide off the seat when harnessed. The teacher and aide meet the bus in front of the school and walk the whole class to the classroom. After school one of the4m stays on the sidewalk with the kids while the other puts kids onto the bus and into cars.

What made me feel better was to make a card to pin to his backpack. On the outside it has his name and the words "info inside" . On the inside it says " I go to liberty tree preschool. I ride bus 116 to school. I ride bus 75 home. if you have any questions call my mom at 614-266-****".

He has learned SO much in just 4.5 months of school. He is learning prewriting skills, songs, self help things ( handwashing, coat zipping, putting on winter hat,) and sharing. I am totally amazed.

What is a good dog breed for hiking?

arbolito

I like a medium size dog that preferably doesn't shed too much. What breed should I look at for a hiking companion that will accept carrying a pack and not get too tired or aggitated?

Answer
Okay, now if you 'medium' to mean less than 20-22 inches at the shoulder and under 60 lbs but over 16 inches and over 20 lbs, that is a tough call.

By the way, do people actually READ the question or just automatically type in their favorite breed? You say "medium", they say large (Lab, German Shepard, Old English Sheepdog) or very large (Husky, Boxer) or giant (St. Bernard.) You say "doesn't shed much - they say Old English who strew the house with balls of fluff and require a lot of grooming to keep their coat nice, Huskies from whose discarded coat you can spin a sweater........

While a dog can carry up to 25% of their body weight for a distance, they should generally not exceed 10-15% for any real distance depending upon their build. For example, a greyhound with a tall narrow body would be hard pressed to do 10% of its body weight but a broadbacked, stocky Aussie could easily do the 15% and up to 20%. Now 'real distance' is anything in excess of a half mile or so.

Do not ask a long body breed like a Basset to do this - it is very tough on the spine and they already have to cope with that elongated spinal column and can't get their back legs under to balance and drive as is needed in order to a carry the pack.
Haven't met a dog yet that I couldn't get to carry a packback in less than an hour.

For a dog that will have the energy and endurance, look at the Herding and Sporting Breeds. (The Working Breeds can do it easily but these are the big guys - 26 inches or more at the shoulder and 85/90 lbs and up.)

Keep in mind that Sporting Breeds where bred to chase and retrieve. Doggy will have to be very well-trained before hitting the back country without a leash.

The Hounds - well, fleet of foot and gone on a scent - again leashes until 100% reliable in off-lead work.

Herding tend to stick closer - they want to know where their charges are at all times.

Years ago my Golden and I would backpack in alone for 1-2 weeks at a time - each of us with our packs (and me with most of it!)

After wrecking my shoulder with a sports injury, I now rely upon a Kuvasz as a Mobility Service Dog - he wears packs and carries what I can't (anything above 5 lbs). He is 110-115ish and can easily handle 20 lbs even in deep sand.

I stongly recommend the Wenaha packs. The pack part attachd to a body harness with velcro and can be lifted off to give the dog a rest without having to undo all the straps. Here is one site that has them: http://www.getoutoutfitters.com/browseproducts/Wenaha-Dog-Pack-Explorer-III.HTML

Mine came from REI but I'm not sure if they are carrying them or have them in stock (they always sold out fast.)

They aren't cheap but they are tough and last forever.

Now the 'not shedding much' complicates matters and eliminates long haired breeds. Labs are pretty good at going along but be prepared for a lot of stubborness and passive resistance if they don't want to do something.

Sporting: Try the Spaniels - Brittany, English and Welsh; Vizsla (taller but not massive);

The others suitable (Labs, Goldens) are considered large breeds.

Hounds: Top pick is the Rhodesian Ridgeback but they may be larger than you want - up to 26-29 inches at the shoulder and 80 100 lbs. They are actually a herd guarding breed from Africa who were also used for hunting. My choice for a Service Dog for what I needed came down to a Rhodie or Kuvasz, and the deciding factor is that we live on Lake Michigan further north than Chicago - with the cold and snow, a short coated Rhodie woul d not have been happy out running errands on a winter day.

Another posiblity is the Norweigan Elkhound - sturdy dog with medium length thick coat.

Terrier Group - don't even go there. They will be off after everything and have ignoring you down to a fine art.

Non-sporting; Dalmations (if there are no kids under 12 in the household or likely to be any in the next 14 years.)
Keeshond - smaller but very sturdy, Again they have the longer coat.
STANDARD Poodle - give them a terrier clip and not that pouffy stuff and thye look like a real dog ready to hit the water and work. No shedding. Usually 22-27 inches. They were bred as water retrievers.

Herding Group:
Australian Shepherds
Border Collie

NOTE: I see people are recommmending German Shepherds which aside form being a Large breed, are a breed that is having horrendous problems with the dogs' rear end - problems beyond hip dysplasia. I would be extremely extremely careful and not only want to know if the dogs in the immediate family tree passed all their health checks but if any collateral realtives (aunts, uncles 1/2 siblings ....) ever had any of the problems endemic in the breed.

Now, in this group all except the Corgis and the Australian Cattle Dog have longer coats. Australian CD (often called blue tick helers or blue heelers by backyard breeders) is long on energy, short on trainability (okay, maybe come and some basic-basics but...) and obedience and can be nippy.

Go to the AKC website and read in detail about the breeds

http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds

You can search by Group, Breed name or all of them at once.

Now, when you click on the picture of the dog and go to the page for that breed, on the left is a column. At the bottom of the column, is a link captioned "National Breed Club". Click on it - that takes you to the link to the National Club for that breed that sets the breed standards.

The Clubs' websites will give you an ENORMOUS amount of information about the breed - the good, the bad, and the why or why not to get that breed.

The clubs websites also have:
(1) a breeders list - all of whom have agreed to abide by the breeders code of ethics (which you can read)
(2) a link to the breed rescue for their breed

Do give serious thought to adopting from an adult from a breed rescue. The clubs' breed rescues go to a great deal of trouble to determine the dog's temperment, personality, likes and dislikes (particularly kids and cats and other dogs in the household), HEALTH, and level of training. They make a huge effort to match the right dog to the right home - and if they don't have one they think will be suitable for your home, they won't place it. Great way to avoid the puppy training, newpapers, chewing.......

If you decide to get a puppy, please use one of the breeders who are members of the breed club. A well-bred pet puppy may not be a candidate for the show ring (that nose being 1/8th of an inch to long or something else very picky) but they will be very healthy, the parents carefully screened for hereditary health problems, and from a breeder who has devoted a great deal of time to understanding the breed and bloodlines. A responsible breeder will have a written contract with a health guarantee for hereditary problems; require that if for any reason you ever have to give up the dog that it comes back to them; and always be available for help, assistance and advice about your dog. Such a breeder wil tell you if they don't think their breed is right for you based upon your needs. They want a perfect forever home for the puppies - not the money. (In 43 years in the dog show world, I have never known a breeder of that caliber who has made a profit on their dogs - it is labor of love.)

A puppy from such a breeder costs no more - and often less in view of the vet bills for an animal from poor quality breeding - than from a backyard breeder who doesn't do the health checks, knows nothing about the breed or bloodlines, doesn't give a guarantee, never wants to hear about the puppy again and has breed from mediocre or poor quality dogs.

I you want a hiking companion, you will have to very careful about getting a dog from a breeder who screens their breeding stock for hereditary orthopedic defectsthat and other problems that can affect their ability to go out and go with you - hips, elbows, patella, cardiac, eyes....

Now many reputable breeders will have adult dogs that they bred that they are placing. The dog may be a rehome since a good breeder requires the dog be returned to them if the owner can't keep it. The dog may be one they held back to show and it turned out to just not quite be show caliber as it grew up. Occassionally, in rare instances, they may have a dog who did finish its AKC championship but the breeder needs to place it in a home as a co-own (you get the dog, they get to use it for breeding - with a female maybe 1-3 litters and male as a sire for number of litters. Once the breeding career is done which is earlier than mosst pet people realize, the dog is spayed/neuterd.) SImilarly the dog could have finished its cahmpionship -after much effort, many shows and a lot of money - but the breeder decides not to use them as breeding stock because the dog hated showing so much and lacked the personality and temperment for the ring. If the breeder is placing a dog who is over 12 months, ask to see its health exams - they can preliminary xrays on elbows, hips and patellas at that age, and compelte on eyes cardiac and thyroid.

Good luck and happy hiking,

osadestmel

No, I'm not trying to be a poser!
I had to do a research project about it and I looked every where.
But you know, people hate stereotypes or are trying to be posers.
So I can't find a straight answer. What is the complete list of high school stereotypes? What is popular or not? What do they wear or shop at? I need to know all details for my project please!!!

Answer
Well I haven't been in high school in a long time and most people stop using labels in their early to mid twenties. But I do remember the high school labels well, lol. After you realize that they are basically just an almost tribal method of accepting and discriminating against others without any real basis on character you stop using them.

Anyway, here is a list of high school stereotypes I remember and my completely shallow, unfair, judgmental, and superficial definitions of them.

Prep: Usually some type of clothing label whore, will often wear clothing that is considered chique, listens to top 40s pop and rock music, very concerned with the opinions of peers and popular people in general, not very capable of having an intellectually stimulating conversation, known for having bad (or at least bland) tastes in movies, music, television shows, etc., very judgmental towards people they consider inferior (goths, punks, nerd, etc.)

Nerd: Usually quiet, known for having a bizarre sense of humor, typically obsessed with some sort of niche entertainment medium (comics, computers, anime, drama, band, etc.), usually do well in school, have explosive anger problems when pushed (nerd rage), not popular with opposite (or same) sex, usually don't particularly care about fashion, socially awkward, dislike most sports.

Jock: Typically makes satisfactory grades, obsessed with image, known for getting away with a bit more than the average student, popular, total douche-bags, however they are generally pleasant, very active in dating (or whatever those two week mini-relationships are called), listen to very cliche power rock, have strict parents

Emo: generally think that the whole world is against them and/or there is no point in existence, depressed, find extreme ways of expressing themselves (hair, accessories, art, etc.), listen to bands that deal in depressing and bleak subject matter and fail to realize that those bands are so rich that they probably have no real problems and are just trying to sell records to poor depressed kids (linkin park, afi, boxcar racer, etc), purchases clothing from hot topic, dislikes authority figures, many parallels with "nerds", reclusive, typically have very "normal" home lives

Punk: Very outspoken, listens to a mix of semi-undeground punk/rockabilly/ska (addicts, operation ivy, tiger army, black flag, all, etc.), have a strong leaning toward a certain political position but usually can't defend/debate their possition very well, generally loaths hot topic, are quick to call others "poser", strongly dislike pop-punk bands (greenday, Blink 182, rise against, etc) although most punks will admit to liking at least one, into various counter-culture things (tattoos, facial piercings, veganism, extreme hairstyles, etc) solely for the sake of trying to upset the status quo, purchase most of clothing from concerts or internet, typically get involved in hard drugs at some point, more than likely in a band or trying to start a band

Goth: Usually snarky, generally angry, socially awkward, obsessed with anything that has a slight macabre asthetic, listens to a mix of synth-heavy music (industrial, neo-goth, 80s mix, Edm, etc), most likely smokes, expresses self through clothing/art, generally have a bleak outlook, however it is much less bleak that with the "emo" kid, might have a strange obsession with a slightly macabre book/movie like twilight or things related to tim burton or vasquez, usually buys cloths online or makes them, dresses similar to the emo kid but a bit more elaborate

Indie kid: Likes any type of music, film, fashion, etc. that is "indie" (being on an independant label), dislikes almost anything that could be considered mainstream, most likely involved in music or art, looks down on most popular people, generally aloof and carefree, inflated ego, strongly dislike being labeled, being an indie kid is the first step to becomeing a full on hipster (google it), because what is considered indie or unerground changes with the seasons it is hard to desscribe how they dress, most likely slightly frumpy

That one person everyone seems to like that doesn't really fit into a catagory: Everyone likes this person, he/she isn't really bothered by a whole lot of anything, usually into a wide variety of things and tries (often successfully) to get along with everyone, dresses moderately and usually has a good sense of humor, probably a bit conservative (against smoking, drinking, etc.)

Thug: listens exclusively to rap/hip hop or Hardcore/metal, tries to show peers how "hard" he is and is known for acting tough and fearless, tries often to intimidate others, is constantly trying to impress others, most likely is into something really nerdy or dangerous to image but fears telling others, bad self esteem, strong chance of failing at life in general but at least they got to be a tough guy in high school right?, could turn into one of the other steriotypes at any moment

Hope this is helpful. I'll add more later when I think of someting, but this is what's at the top of my head. Like I said earlier, these labels cease to be relevant after highschool for the most part and are completely obsolete after college. Hope your project turns out well!

I used to play soccer when I was in high school and have always been active and on a low fat diet, but they don't seem to go away. I have a tiny waist but always have to buy my pants two sizes bigger just to fit in the lower half. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if youâre trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get an online, desktop, or cell phone diet and fitness calculator. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html
