Longboarding to School?

Alice

Sorry this is so long for one question, it's mainly all background info

So I am a female, and I started long-boarding a month ago. I got a Globe Dart strictly for cruising and transportation, lets say riding for a couple miles.

One day I was waiting for my friend to finish playing basketball with his other friends so I could car pool with him, and in came boys from my school with long boards. I was puzzled, because it looked like skate boards, but not with their pin-tail look. I was soooo tempted to ask to try it out, but I hate, hate, hate talking to packs of boys like that. It's just not me. I don't want that kind of attention but..

That was how i was inspired to get my own. I thought about it for quite a while, researched... Transportation would be faster, I might fuse some common interests with other kids, etc etc...

And so I got one. I practiced right when it delivered. I fell a total of two times! Not too shabby for my first steps on piece of wood with wheels. Now it's May --almost June and I have gone down a few baby hills. Wussy hills though. I'll admit i even get speed wobbles from them too. I think it's maybe third or fourth nature to me it seems like, because I feel like cruising is so easy now.
I learnt some tricks, like ghost-ride kick flip and...um

The problem is that I want to long-board to school because I miss the bus a lot when I'm not supposed to. When I wake up just to see the alarm clock read 7 am I panic, it's the worst. (i have to wake up at 6:30 for atleast 20 minutes.) And i have to work up guts to tell my mom im late because she has nightshifts and goes crazy without sleep after she comes home.

There fore i want to improvise a 'plan b' to ride to school with my baby (longboard). OK the real problem is is that I don't want anyone to see me longboarding for a matter of reasons.
1) I hate the amount of attention like how boarding is a male-dominant sport and they just stare, unless im with my dog who gets and loves the attention. I don't blame him, he's one sexy @ss mofo.
2) there are SOME girls, i mean like less than atleast 10 girls who board at my school. And im afraid they'll be like "Oh she thinks she's so cool" and crap, but truth is, I don't give a damn and I honestly, honestly, I am not 100% in longboarding just because it's cool, but it's a great way of transportation and the cleshay line coming in--, "to express my self "(i just love the wind in my hair, but not really because when you stop you get really hot and sweaty) I mean thats what express means in my dictionary.

etc...etc..etc..

I just don't want to be labeled as the poser, even though most of my friends know that im the girl who doesnt give a sh*t what anyone says about me, im so washed by the rules of..living, of how we live, a world of judgment. and other problems. So i hate being that girl. Im also not the dress to impress kind either. Whatever i have in my drawer, then there you go. You know? I used to hate flare jeans with my converse... but now i dont care. I just take whatever jeans i have.

So how would i gain confidence that i can walk through the doors and feel normal carrying a gym bag, violin case, and a longboard? (i dont carry all these things) without feeling so dumb and so poser like when im not trying to (im so frustrated) It's already 11:30 and i can already predict that im going to snooze in the morning, but ill stay up for answers. Please give me some advice, to get over what seems so dumb. I know some say just do it but its this one little thing. Even my best friends are like 'you are REAALLLLY going to skateboard from here to there?' because i can feel the tension of them thinking "oh shes a poser", but i really believe that longboarding can change my life. I know that sounds dumb, but it helps me out so much. I hope you read all of this, if you did and answer too:'), xoxoxo make my night please.

Answer
Wow a lot of writing. If you actually like skating and you're doing it for you, then you're not a poser. And if you're not a poser, it shouldn't bother you. Just be you and do what you want and people will get used to it. Hope this helps and have fun skating!

I'm 24 and still high school nightmares are chasing me!?

back in high school i was like in hell, i never had self confidence the students there always made fun of me called me hurtful names, the guys even made fun of me because i was shy and short and thin, always isolated and that hurt me alottttttt! even though deep inside i had potentials and i adored dancing and singing but i was so closed...now Iâm 24 and have a fiancé and still those students are chasing me and Iâm feeling i have complications and Iâm so tired whenever i get close to a friend i remember my bad days and i think that she will hurt me, if Iâm in public Iâm scared that i will talk or act wrong and the people will make fun like it used to happen in school, my fiancé is popular and tells me Iâm amazing even though he doesn't know about that old days that i had i never tell him because Iâm so ashamed! i have rage and hatred i want to be normal and forget and have self confidence to be me again! What can i do? please help!

Answer
I think quite a few people have a hard time "letting go" of their high school memories (for good and for bad)...there are plenty of other people out there that hold onto those memories as the "best days of their lives", who I actually feel sadder for, because what does that say about their future, their current family situation, their marriage, their retirement and whatnot.

The "good" for you is - YOU haven't lived the "best" years of your life yet, especially if you're not defining high school as those years. So, instead of despair and self-consciousness, why not consider your present situation and live "in the now" and think about that chapter being closed (thankfully) and enjoy the compliments that are sent your way. I know many people define their present personality on what it was between the ages of 14 - 19 and it has an affect on their overall perception of their outward worldview as well as their inward self. Fortunately, it sounds like you are living a much better life than 10 years ago and in this new chapter, you might do yourself (and your fiancee) better justice as to NOT live down to your ex-highschool kids (and I highlight KIDS) expectations of you.

I guess my question is...if you didn't like these guys in high school that were mercilessly teasing you, then why put stock into what they say to you? I mean, here you have a fiancee (who you presumably love) saying you're awesome and you'd rather believe the kids from 10 years ago, who you didn't really care about when you think about your self image. It's just a shift in your thinking/belief patterns that you need to acknowledge the loving, supportive people in your life now that think you are wonderful rather than hang your life's perception on 15 year old, douche bag boys from 10 years ago.

Conversely, don't you know those people who are having a hard time in "real" life as an adult that often say..."high school was so awesome, I was a star athlete, queen of the pep squad, my parents had all the parties and I got a Camaro right when I was 16..." Now, they have no clue how to survive in a society that doesn't care how popular they were in high school, about their being the star running back, or kissing Suzie Jenkins...they just want you to perform in their place of business, listen to your manager and be another "cog" in the wheel of commercialism/capitalism...the rest, is just filler.

So, fill your own life, your present life with good memories...no, GREAT memories of WHO you have loving you NOW...not back then. It's a waste of time to hang on to those ugly memories of self doubt and childish pigeon holes that High Schoolers inevitably place us into.

peace,

baldy

Bullying in UK schools compared to US schools?

Anteater

I need statistics to back up my point that bullying is more common in US schools because students don't wear uniform, and you get picked on because of what you wear. Whereas in the UK, we wear uniform so you look the same.

Any ideas, and sources?

Answer
being english i cant comment on this as effectivly

but just because we wear school uniform dosnt change alot

Kids still bully over silly things, like what shoes you got, or what make bag, how your cloths fit!!

the school uniform system is a joke here because childen still wear certain accesories to make it cooler like hats and scarfs and coats

its something thats bad everywere and the problem we have is teachers havent got the power to punish anyone to the point where it could actually be stopped!

what school bag do u like???? pixxxxx?

I do go with the second one. A lot of people use plain old backpacks at my school. The really preppy kids have tote bags though. And if I don't need a lot of books I use my fake quilted Chanel tote-ish thing.

How much do you usually spend on back to school shopping, just for moms of 2 or more kids?

Magali

I have 3 kids ages 8, 7, 6 and so far i have spend $65 on just school supplies, i still need clothes and shoes and backpacks and so forth so how much do you spend?

Answer
I have 2 kids (7 and 5) and I'm hoping that I can get by with spending $300 together for clothes, shoes, and school supplies. Right now most of the supplies are on sale for like $.15, $.25, and $1.00. Book bags usually cost us around $15-$20. I do still buy all their clothes from like Wal-Mart, Target, or other stores if I can get them on sale or decently cheap especially since by Christmas they'll probably need new clothes anyways. I'm also hoping I can find shoes on sale at Shoe Carnival or some other good shoe store.

How to survive first day of high school? What does it take to become a high school English Teacher? :)?

PianoGuy

Well, I will be a freshman in high school next yr. I have done some, but limited research on it, so I thought that I would ask a question on here to help me "kick start" my in depth research to becoming a high school freshman! While researching a little I found that I like teaching! I want to become a high school English Teacher! So any tips on that would be greatly appreciated as well. Going back to the first question I need to know: What to pack in my backpack the night before?,What time to get to bed the night before?(I normally fall asleep later before the first night because I am so excited), Study tips, gym survival, major exam study tips, first day tips, first day outfit, and anything else you can think of on BOTH questions. Thanks (I need both answered, but me being a high school freshman will happen sooner) 10 points
PLEASE ANSWER! ESPECIALLY THE FIRST ONE IS URGENT!!!!lol

Answer
Yay! Congratulations! I'm becoming a freshman this year, too :) Here's a list thing to answer your questions:

1. What to pack in my backpack the night before? What I usually do is pack a binder or two, definitely paper, a notebook or two (in-case they want you to write anything down, plus you could always copy down into another notebook need be), a folder or two, and of course pens and pencils. Oh, and don't forget lunch! Also, make sure to have plenty of binders, notebooks, and folders at home, too, I just think it would be a waste to pack all of it for the first day because the first day is usually when the teachers tell you exactly what you will need. Then again, it's up to you if you do want to bring more. In addition, for math it might be a good idea to have a graphing calculator for high school. Although some teachers might accept scientific calculators, at one point you maybe required to have a graphing one, especially if you are going into algebra I or algebra II. If you're going into geometry you will probably need to own a protractor and a compass which are both cheap tools that you could purchase at Staples or CVS.

2. What time to get to bed the night before? I have this same problem with not being able to fall asleep when excited (and this is a very exciting time). Well, I usually go to bed at 10:00, and I think I'll go to bed at about 9:00, since I know it wouldn't take me over an hour to fall asleep. So, if you think you could fall asleep in a half hour, go to bed about a half hour before you usually do on school nights.

3. Study tips? Well, everyone has different studying needs. For me, flash cards do the trick. Also, make sure to shuffle them each time around so you don't wind up memorizing the order instead! In addition, I find that a lot of times we will read something in class out of the text book, but I won't really get it until I read it again at home. Another idea is seeing if the text book has questions made up already, or maybe you could write up your own type of quiz to test yourself on.

4. Gym survival? Always make sure to have at least two sets of gym clothes in your locker! You may not need them, but it's always good to be safe. Plus, never forget to take your gym clothes home to be cleaned once a week. If you forget them at home, you will always have the other pair in your locker. Now onto gym itself. Well, gym is supposed to be fun. It's a class where you can talk to all your friends and just fool around. Make sure to get all the exercises done and participate in the game, and the gym teachers should like you. If you're in a class with tough bully-like people, the best thing to do is stay away. Don't hide, but don't try to get them mad, either.

5. Major exam study tips? Don't get stressed! That's the most important thing! Stay relaxed, and just review your notes from the rest of the year.

6. First day tips? Well, are you going to a school where you already know a lot of the kids? Because if you are just try to stick by them, and if you get your schedules ahead of time, you should call your friends ahead of time to see what classes you have together. If you don't know anyone in this school yet, try to look for a nice group of kids that won't let you down. It's always hard making new friends and even harder to know who to trust, but you seem like a nice kid that I would definitely want to be friends with.

7. First day outfit? Well, I'm assuming you're a guy because your user name is Timmy. Either way make sure your clothes are comfortable but not over the top. I know it's nice to dress nice on the first day, but I always keep in mind that I won't want everyone to think that I'm going to dress like that everyday. Also, always follow your schools dress code. Hopefully they give you more leeway than they did in middle school. If you live in a warm climate you could wear shorts to school, and maybe comfortable sneakers or sandals (just make sure they're not to messy). I always keep a sweatshirt in my locker because even if it's not cold outside, the school might have it's air conditioning on.

8. Since you would like to become an English teacher, I would suggest making sure to try to get into honors or even AP Language arts courses. If your school has electives it might be good to take ones in the language arts section.

Good luck! I'm glad I'm not the only one excited for high school! Have fun!

Answer
I volunteer with a lot of kids at my local science center and I know they really like the balloon cars. You need a piece of cardboard in the shape of a rectangle, a straw, some tape, 4 bottle lids, a balloon, some markers, and string. First glue the bottle lids to the cardboard like wheels, then decorate the cardboard however you want. Tape the straw to the bottom. Suspend the string between two chairs and pull it tight, but first run the string through the straw so the car will hang on it. Finally blow up the balloon and tape it to the top of the cardboard when you let the balloon go it flys across the string. Hope this helps.

I need a cute tote bag big enough for my books for school... please help :)?

Q. im going to be a freshmen in highschool i need like a list of stores - thanks

Answer
I really like tote bags from Hollister and also Abercrombie & Fitch. The tote bags at Abercrombie & Fitch may be a bit pricy so you can also check our Abercrombie Kids, which also sells tote bags. If you want something cheaper, you can try Aeropostale, Walmart, Target, Kmat, etc.

Hope I helped!

Global Warming?!?! Please respond!?

sugarsnap3

Listen, I have posted something like this 4 times. I am very worried about Global Warming. I am trying to get my parents to buy those 99 cent bags in the super market made of cloth. I am worried about our enviornment and I want to see what people are doing to help. This really is a big deal to me, so please respond to me :)
I'm glad most of you have given long answers which shows you really care about our enviornment and I thank you. But the people who said that we can't do anything are wrong. This is coming up on us and it's not going to change unless we do something. So thank you for your support, and remember everything counts!

Answer
this is my response, and i talk to a lot of school kids in mexico saying these things
also try to convince farmers not to plough ,not to use fertilizer ,to harvest water and plant diverse,
desertification is like a fire that grows once set in motion
also encourage people to reforrest to capture carbon and produce more humidity
and then there is the following story

in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification

in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat, usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification, the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days

in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert, the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else, and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)

,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.

collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,

as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious, rising seas result in landloss

each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss

more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,

and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing

RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.

Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,

At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.

SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes

reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.

the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.

the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia

Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

the protection of existing forrests.

stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.

more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks

,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour

alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine

recicling wastes,limit water use

Do you have any variations on making a PB&J sandwich?

Where did the PB&J sandwich originate?

I love simple things; a PB&J always tastes good to me. I made one recently with Nuttella instead of jelly. It tasted like peanut butter and chocolate.

Answer
A Brief History of PB and J sandwich

Food historians have seen nothing written about the peanut butter and jelly sandwich before 1940. What we do know is that GI's in WW 2 were given rations of both peanut butter and jelly. When they returned to the states after the war peanut butter sales and jelly sales both soared. It would seem most likely this would be the birth of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Here is some more links to the different Elements of the PB and J sandwich. Like the idea of theSandwich ....The Bread Peanut Butter... Jelly

We salute America's favorite spread
http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/1015/p22s02-hfks.html

If you're a typical American kid, you'll eat more than 1,500 peanut-butter sandwiches by the time you graduate from high school. Whew! As a nation, we will consume 700 million pounds of peanut butter this year. That's enough to cover the entire floor of the Grand Canyon! Why do we like this uniquely American food? Kids in other cultures mostly find peanut butter disgusting. They much prefer herring paste (in Scandinavia) or pungent brewer's yeast (in Australia) on their bread.

Why do we like it so much? Perhaps because it's home-grown. Peanuts are native to South America. Spanish explorers took them to grow in Africa. Slaves brought peanuts with them to North America. (Africans called peanuts "nguba." Have you ever heard of "goober peas"? That's what some Southerners used to call peanuts. Doesn't "goober" sound a lot like "nguba"?) Making peanut butter is a simple process. (But first someone had to think of it. More on that later.) Peanuts are legumes, members of the pea family, not nuts. The yellow flowers of the plant bend down to the ground so that their seed pods (peanuts) can grow and ripen underground. It takes five months before peanuts are ready to pick.

Today, peanuts are shelled as they are harvested. Still in their shells, the peanuts are forced through a metal grid just big enough for the peanuts â and not the peanuts in their shells â to pass through. The shelled peanuts are bounced on a vibrating screen to shake off any bits of shell or other material. The legumes are trucked to the peanut-butter plant in large cloth bags, each containing 110 pounds of peanuts. First stop: the tumbler. A large metal drum holds 330 pounds of peanuts and turns continuously as it roasts the peanuts at 300 degrees F. for 20 minutes.

After cooling, the peanuts are "blanched." Hot air and rubber blocks remove the outer skin and the hearts â the little piece that holds the two peanut halves together. (The hearts are bitter, so they're sold for animal feed â or for use in cheaper peanut butters.)

Now only the peanut kernels are left. They're poured into a grinder. Smooth peanut butter is what kids like best. Crunchy is what adults prefer. Usually salt is added, and sometimes sugar and vegetable oil. Then the peanut butter is packed into jars and sent to stores. If it's "natural" peanut butter, you'll need to stir it up after you open the jar. That's because the peanut oil will float to the top. Hydrogenated peanut butter doesn't separate. Invented in the 1920s, it's the top-selling kind today.

Humans have been eating peanuts for thousands of years. Jars of peanuts have been discovered in Incan tombs dating to 1500 BC. But humans in North America were not as quick to catch on. By 1800, huge peanut crops were being grown in South Carolina â as animal feed. Peanuts were pig food until the Civil War. Food became scarce, and soldiers on both sides of the conflict turned to peanuts (known then as "goobers") as an alternative to meat. In 1890, a St. Louis physician, looking for an easily digestible form of protein for his patients without teeth, poured some peanuts into his meat grinder. He turned the crank and out came history's first batch of peanut butter. The unknown doctor never patented his invention. Cereal giant John Harvey Kellogg did, though, in 1895.

Around 1900, peanuts (and peanut butter) began to get popular. First, inventor George Washington Carver began promoting peanuts as a valuable crop. Second, new machinery was marketed that could harvest and clean peanuts faster and better than humans could. The 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis showcased peanut butter as an ideal, nutritious food. It was a hit. But it took a war to spread peanut butter's appeal.

During World War II, meat and butter were scarce and expensive. Peanut butter was available, cheap, and nutritious. Soldiers in the war and people at home began to eat it more. After the war, the demand for peanut butter increased. Jams and jellies have been around since the 1500s. Peanut butter only since 1890. When did they get together? Some food historians say World War II soldiers may have added jelly to peanut butter to make it less sticky. Ration menus for soldiers and lunch-counter menus of that era list peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

But it's likely that PB&J dates as far back as the 1910s. A reader of this newspaper born in 1913 wrote to say that her mother had been at the Battle Creek, Mich., sanatorium run by the brothers of Mr. Kellogg (the man who patented peanut butter). That's where her mother first encountered PB&J. But if you've had enough of peanut butter and jelly by now, you might try some savory alternatives. A restaurant in New York City, Peanut Butter & Co., offers spicy peanut butter and grilled chicken with pineapple jam, peanut butter and pickles, of white-chocolate peanut butter with orange marmalade.

Try Elvis's favorite PB concoction

The Krema Nut Co. of Columbus, Ohio, makes and sells 12 kinds of peanut-butter sandwiches. Owner Mike Giunta says the two most popular combinations are the Nutty-Mallow (peanut butter with marshmallow fluff) and the Buckeye (peanut-butter with chocolate hazelnut spread). There's also Elvis's favorite, the P.B. Nanna, a toasted peanut-butter sandwich with honey and sliced bananas.

The Krema Nut Co. knows its stuff. They are the oldest peanut-butter company still in operation today. They first started churning out the crunchy and creamy stuff in 1908.

Finally, here are some peanut facts from the National Peanut Board to help you appreciate your next legume-paste sandwich:

⢠George Washington Carver invented more than 300 uses for peanuts, including axle grease.

⢠Sen. Barry Goldwater once shaved with peanut butter on a camping trip. (He used creamy style.)

⢠The peanut has been to the moon. Astronaut Alan Shepard took one with him on his space flight.

Make your own peanut butter

It's easy and fun, and a tasty way to experiment with food.
You will need:
1 1/2 cups unsalted roasted peanuts
1 tablespoon peanut oil
Food processor (You'll also need to ask an adult to help you with this.)
Mixing bowl
Mixing spoon
Storage container
Measuring cups and spoons

Directions for smooth peanut butter:

1. Pour the peanuts into the bowl. Add the oil, and mix well. Pour the mixture into the food processor.

2. Blend the mixture until it's very smooth. (Try some!)

3. Store your smooth peanut butter in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will be good for two weeks.

For chunky peanut butter:

1. Take about 1/4 cup out of the 1 1/2 cups of peanuts and set them aside.

2. Pour the rest of the peanuts into the mixing bowl. Add the oil, and stir. Pour the mixture into the food processor.

3. Process the mixture until it's very smooth. Stop the food processor. Pour in the 1/4 cup of peanuts you had set aside. Carefully stir them in a little.

4. Process a few seconds more to create the chunks in your chunky peanut butter. (Peanut butter makers used to stir in the 'hearts' they'd removed from the peanuts to make chunky peanut butter!)

5. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It will keep about two weeks.

Penguin Backpacks?! (:?

Isabella

I am a Junior in High School and penguins are my favorite animal! I am looking for a penguin backpack that is large or normal size, not kids. If anyone can help me I will be in dept to them forever!

Answer
I just got a backpack from Hot Topic the other day and they had a penguin backpack there. I got the skunk back pack. xD I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I think it's so cute.

http://sfcentre.nearbynow.com/store/hottopic-4888/product-99946569-Penguin_Hoodie_Backpack-San_Francisco-CA-94103

I had to look it up on a different website than the actual Hot Topic website because it's down right now.
But they have those at every Hot Topic. :D

New Student In MIddle school?

Q. Okay, So I am going to a new middle school in a month, and I am so nervous! I am used to my old middle school that had only 200 people in it.... but that was pre school through eighth grade... but the building split between it. And we only changed between 4 classes and two electives! This school has 8000 people and it is only 6-8th! The school is HUGE too. I am afraid I will get lost. And that I will not know anyone and not have anyone to sit next to at the lunch table... What do I do with this? How will I configure my way around the school? Also, what do I do about the lunch table thing, I am kinda shy .-.! Also, I was making my school supply list, does this sound good for a 7th grader?

4 1 inch or 1/2 binders
5 packs of loose leaf paper (I USE THIS STUFF LIKE MAD)
Markers for my own enjoyment
5 Note books
2 packs of Index cards (I use them for studying
2 packs of Mechanical Pencils and Lead
6 packs of regular pencils and a hand sharpner
1 pack of pens
A mirror for my locker
A calendar for my locker or pocket
Sticky notes to put in my locker/or a whiteboard
Dividers for binder
10 folders (for electives and classes)
*anything else*?

Also, what are some good ways to study other than index cards?

I bought clothes, but those aren't a big deal for meh :DD

Another thing: What to put in my bag I can carry around? I wear makeup on occasion.. this is what I have for my tote.

Make up bag with mascarra and eyeliner and concealer
Pads *I haven't started my period yet, but just in case*
Cell phone *turned off*
Gum *for when I can't focus it helps*

Anything else?

Also, for my locker I plan to put :
My bag at school
Pads or put them in my bag
decorations and pictures to make it mine
extra old gym shoes in case I forgot
Socks and a gym outfit
extra underwear...

Anything I am forgetting for this school year? I want it too be a good one ;)

Answer
Well... Thats a big change for you. About making friends, there's sure to be other kids who are just coming into school too. The easiest way is to just talk to the kids in your classes. Even though youre shy, people will start talking to you on their own, because a new kid is always interesting. Your friends can help you get to class too. But you can probably get a map from the principal. You'll probably be a little lost for the first couple of weeks, but soon enough you'll know the school like the back of your hand..

Ok so first off, that is alot to carry around. And your new school might not allow for bags to carry around. so might I suggest insead getting a large 3 inch 3 ring zippered binder( you can find it at target) and get one with a shoulder strap. It makes things easier to take around. You can divide it into sections with pocket dividers. If you can take around a bag, but not a backpack, get a overly large hobo style shoulder bag that you can pass off as a 'purse'

Unless you actually dont share pencils, get more. Because kids in big schools steal them.... well more likley in all schools kids steal them..They steal pens too. especially if theyre nice ones.

Your locker sounds nice, but considering your school is so big, you can account on you classes being pretty far apart, unless they split the school into sections. You probably wont have that much time to get to your locker.

Studying, index cards are like the best way ever invented. But studying in groups well too. looking over your notes a little each night works too. (lol its funny cause i dont do any of this.. XD)

Just sayin, you better be good at concealing gum chewing because they probably wont let you. No matter how much it helps/

Yes the extra gym clothes and shoes are a good idea.

The pads and extra underwear are a good idea, but you should keep them on you.Although pretty much all of your teachers would let you go, its not fun to speed-walk down the hallway worrying about.... you know....

Makeup is overrated. But if you must, keep it in your locker. Teachers who have to teach alot of kids like to make sarcastic remarks.....It keeps them sane.

Candy goes a long way in middle school. So does gum. Its like the black market. Dont forget that. XD

Show stopping backpacks?

Marisalyn

Ok so I really want to get a really cool backpack for this upcoming school year. I would make my own since my request is too much but I only have $64 bucks which in my area wont pay to make a whole backpack. I want like a backpack that makes you think "Wow shes a cool girl" Lol Um no messenger bags or tote bags. I don't care about the brand name as long as it looks really cool, because right now i'm having a hard time finding any backpacks that i really like.
It can be any color except pink. Multicolored, white, or black, light blue is preferred though
So you can get an idea here are some backpacks that I like but not a whole lot:

Those ^^^^^ I like the way the backpacks are structured, like with the flap on the top, not the designs. Something you would see a girl in high school where.
I just want this to be really cool because I might have this backpack for a long time so i don't want to be stuck with a really bland and typical backpack. Nothing extremely girly please and/or extremely plain.

Like what type of backpack made you literally stop and look for a while because it was just that awesome. lol

Any suggestions of backpacks that are unique and really show stopping cool I'd be glad to look at.
Thanks c:
I like Nike but ehh... not exactly my cup of tea. Thanks for taking your time to suggest though!

Do schools let you have a party in the class anymore?

Big Daddy

When i was a kid in primary/elementry school i had my parties in school. My mom would take a half day at work or the day off. Durning lunch or right after she would bring a cake, hats and treat bags for each kid. No gifts i got that from family at home. Not all the kids did this but a few did and it was allways fun. Do they allow you to do this anymore

Answer
My younger children go to a private school and we are allowed to bring special treats and goodie bags. Usually I do not go, but the teachers have a fun hat for the kids to wear and they are the line leader for the day. It makes them feel special and they get to share the day with their friends. My daughter is in Kindergarten and her teacher even sent home a framed picture of my daughter with the birthday hat on home. My daughter decorated the picture frame. It is special times like this that the little ones remember.

What are good high school lunches?

Q. I know this is the wrong category but all the other ones aren't so busy right now! Thanks so much for putting up with me!! Im going to high school in about 2 weeks and i dont know what to bring for an everyday normal lunch. All suggestions are welcome. I went to a weird private school where all the kids had fancy stuff and all. I don't like the caffeteria food .. heard its not so great. What do you have for lunch in high school?

Answer
yea.. ur gonna get flamed for having this in the wrong category. its cool wit me tho :)

A good high school lunch would consist of maybe one or two sandwiches, a fruit, a desert, a snack, and a drink.

i.e.
One or Two PB&J or Relished meat sandwiches
One Apple
A Lil' Debbie snack
A bag of chips
A can of soda or a bottle of orange juice

Short, sweet, to the point. And it accomplishes its primary mission; satisfying the appetite :)

Vans Warped Tour 2012 Questions?!?!?

Lisa

So, I am going to the Vans Warped Tour this year, and it is my first time going. So, I hear that there are many stages. How does that work. And the place I am going to is like an arena, so where are all the stages going to be? It starts at 11:00am, so how long do you think it will last? And do the headlining bands play a longer set, how many bands are going to be there? Would you say that the Vans Warped Tour is appropriate for a 14 year-old? And are there chances to meet the bands? And is there anything else I should know before going?

Thanks!

Answer
They are set up around the venue. If its at an arena chances are it will be in the parking lot. Bands will start playing 30 minutes after the doors open. It should end around 8:30 depending on if they start on time. Bands get 30 minutes of playing time. There will be 60+ bands playing that day. Yes its appropriate I started going when I was 14. There will be plenty of kids your age there. You have a very good chance of meeting bands. A lot of them do signings that day. Drop by their tent at the beginning to see the place and time of their signings. Get there early the line for signings get really long. Some bands do hang out at their tent through out the day hanging out and selling merch.

Eat a good breakfast that day. Eat there even if you don't feel hungry. Have a spot to meet up with friends if you get separated. Take a break in the shade every once in awhile to cool off. Bring: water, sunscreen, hat, hand sanitizer, backpack, money, charged cellphone, sharpies, kleenex. Dress for the weather. Don't wear jeans or dark colors. Stick to shorts, t-shirts or tank top, and comfy shoes. Don't wear opened toed shoes stick to closed toe shoes. When you get inside go straight towards the Main stage and Vans tent there will be a huge blow up with the times/stages/bands. They have a free paper with the stage names and free pencils to fill out the bands and times. Afterwards explore the booths a lot of them give you free stuff. The vans tent gives the first hundred people free stuff if you say the secret word. They do have free stickers and posters at the vans tent. Bring extra money because food and water is expensive. The key to surviving warped tour is to stay hydrated and keep applying sunscreen.

Here are the food and merch prices:
T-shirts-$10-30
Hoodies-$30-40
CD's-$0-10
Posters-$0-3
Stickers-$0-2
Food-$3-5
Water/Gatorade-$3-5

I need a new school bag, something nice but not too expensive..?

Hannah

Basically I am looking for a new bag for school, so it needs to be quite sizeable :) also quite nice, but definitely not too expensive (probably £50 max!) does anyone have any recommendations? Also I live in the UK, not sure if that will be an issue, but yeah :D thanks x

Answer
maybe Jansport, or Addidas. Jansport is more fashionable and less expensive, to Addidas, which can be fashionable and big. basically Jansport $20-$40 for a bag that can fit about 2 binders, and Addidas which can fit 3 or 4 binders for about $30-$60.
Dakine and Quicksilver backpacks are pretty creative, and they have lots of room, and hidden compartments for stuff. the range from $30-$80.
you can find the bags on their online stores.

hope this helps (:

What do i wear to schooll?

Q. I'm 14 going to a performing arts school so i can express my individuality easily because everyones differnt there, i'm bleach blonde & not very tanned brown doesnt suit me, i'm quite thin, short 5''1, own loads of skinny jeans in blue, a darkish blue, white, other types of blue, black etc etc and lots of band t shirts and one thats says save the future and a lot of vest tops but i think were not allowed but i could put a plain top underneath i've allready sorted out my bag which is an allright size with a boombox on it (not a real one but the bag does play ipod music LOL) a normal clear see through quicksilver pencil case, a few plastic reuseable noodle boxes for a lunch box, i own green converse, leopard print converse and bright adidas and some pink and white babysham, i have pink shorts, green shorts, black shorts and every colour of the rainbow tights and i'm also a fan of legwarmers, i have silver & pink & pink and white stripes i want to dress a bit normal for the first day so tips?

Lots of info but this really means a lot to me
Live in the UK.

Answer
i can see you have clothes that are really "artsy" :)
if you want to dress a bit normal my suggestions are:
- skinny jeans (black or blue), statement/graphic tee with vest paired with your green converse(or any plain)
- also if you have a long black top you can pair it with colored tights (bright colored) paired with flats.
- you can also wear a t-shirt with black shorts and colored or black tights.

my other tips:
- do not look over done or too mixed up
- only one or two loud color at a time, the rest make it black white or gray (neutral)
- don't mix a lot of colors
- dont mix too much patterns at once

:)

What school supplies will I be needing for 7th grade?

I am going to Jr. High next year and have no idea what to expect. I would like to know some tips, please.
Also, I am asking 'cause they didn't give ANYONE a supplies sheet.

Answer
I'm going to Grade 8 next year so I've already been through this(: All schools are different, so depending on where you go it may differ a bit, but the general things you'll need will be the same. First of all, the things you'll be needing for Grade 7 aren't that much more or different than what you needed for Grade 6 so don't worry about it too much.

Here is what you'll defineitly need ;;
**Backpack -- Go for a medium sized bag. Don't go for HUGE bag thinking that you'll need a lot of space for Grade 7. The amount of work you'll get for Grade 7 is pretty much the same as Grade 6. But remember not to go for a bag that's too small either(;
** Binder -- Buy a 1 1/2'' or 2'', they're the perfect size to hold your agenda and handouts.
** Dividers -- Instead of having tons of binders or folders, it's much easier to buy one big binder with dividers for each subject inside. This way you'll never forget anything(:
**Folder -- You'll want to have this, just in case for homework or any loose handouts/notes.
**Lined Paper -- If your school is anything like mine, you'll have to take down A LOT of notes, so you'll want to have some paper handy.
**Pencil Case
**Pencils -- I recommend LED pencils rather than normal ones, they're more easier to work with.
**LED -- This depends of whether you'll be having LED pencils or not.
**Sharper -- If you decide to go for normal pencils, you'll need a sharpener with you. Not all teachers have sharpeners in there classroom so you want to be prepared.
**Pens -- Have both blue and red. Blue for writing and red for marking.
**Erasor
**Ruler -- Dont go for a long 30cm ruler, a 15cm will be fine.
**Calculator -- You dont need a super scientific expensive calculator, a small basic one will do.

Here are a few things that are optional ;;
**Geometry Set -- You may or may not need one, but it's good to have one just in case for Math.
**Pencil Crayons/Markers/Glue/Scissors -- Most schools provide these supplies when there's work in the class that requires them. [But for projects and homework, things that you do at home, you'll probobly need them in the longrun, so it's good to be supplied with these items]
**Student Planner/Agenda -- My school actually provides these with the back-to-school package, but if your school doesn't, I strongly suggest you go to Staples and buy one. It really helps you throughout the school year to jot down all your homework and when projects are due:D
**Locker Acessories -- I had lockers ever since Grade 6 but if you didn't, you'll probably get lockers in Grade 7. So you'll want to decorate you're locker with some cute accessories. Maybe a few cute magnets, shelves, baskets, photots, a mirror, etc. etc.
**Combination Lock -- My school also provides a basic standard Dudley lock with the back-to-school package. If your school doesn't you should buy one, they usually have some really cute looking locks with cool designs and fun colours in stores [such as Staples]
**Dictionary -- You proboly have an English dictionary at home. Even though classes provide this for when you need it, if you have French as a subject, try buying a French/English dictionary, it'll really come in handy when you have French projects or homework.
**Lunchbag -- You can buy a lunchbag, or you can brown paper bag it like me(: Better yet, you can just bring a plastic bag from home with your lunch in it, and you'll save some money there(;

So yep. That's basiclly all you'll need. I hope this helps. And I hope you have an amazing Grade 7 year! [I know I did(;]

When did kids start wearing backpacks to school?

phoebe

In movies dated in the 1960-70s, you always see students carrying their books in a stack, even when they're walking from school to home. It has me wondering if backpacks were around back then.
So when were backpacks invented, and when did students start using them to carry their books?

Answer
Late 70's and early 80's is when we see the school backpack come into style.

Before that backpacks were big hulking things only used for camping and outdoor adventures. They date back to the 1800's and probably even before that. This was due to the rigid frames most people thought you needed to distribute the weight. Eventually, somebody came up with the knapsack (early 20th century or there abouts) and it only took a few decades to get the knapsack renamed a bookbag.

Should I use a backpack or tote bag in high school?

Live Laugh

I'm going to be a freshman on Monday, and I've already bought a backpack, but now I'm having second thoughts. I carried a tote bag from Hollister last year, and i loved the way it looked, but it got heavy and bothered my shoulders sometimes. I thought carrying a backpack might even out the weight, since i will be carrying more things this year, but I just liked how the tote bag looked. what do most people in your high school do? please help!

Answer
Most of the kids in my high school have backpacks, I use a backpack a lot because a tote bag hurts my shoulders too, the straps help even out the weight. I suggest going with backpack.

Vietnamese girls in my school are so pretty!!?

Maddie M

I just wonder that like most of the vietnamese girl who borned here are prettier than others. I'm viet too but I'm a fob . Like how they wear their clothes and all the clothes and bags are cute!! I mean where they find those and how do they know what to wear with what?

Answer
first of all, it doesnt matter that they were born here. being born here does not make you prettier than if you were born in vietnam originally. and second of all, you can just ask them where they get their stuff. it doesnt hurt to ask. (: or you can just probably go to the mall and figure it out for yourself.

Vietnam journey in August?

Skeleton80

It would be great to receive suggesstions and hints from people who have visited the area in the past. Planning to backpack over there in the month of august. Don't be afraid to be too generic or too specific, I can use every bit of info I receive. Thanks a lot, and for those of ou travelling this summer, have a wonderful journey wherever you are headed!!!

Answer
Hey!

A good way to see all of Vietnam is to get on the open tour bus (offered by tons of companies). You can then start at either the top or bottom of the country and work your way around. I did Saigon, Nha Trang, Hue, Hoi An and Hanoi. There are tons of other stops available- keep in mind though that these bus rides take tons of time and are not very comfortable. You can get 'sleeper' buses for nighttime journeys and save yourself the money you would have spent at a hostel, but a lot of people find it difficult to sleep on the sleeper buses (lots of honking, bright lights, locals fighting, and a generally bumpy ride). Not sure what your budget is if you are the type of person who requires comfort, I know you can pay more for nicer buses that actually are comfortable (I was on a super strict budget myself).

Saigon is a great fast paced city where you can meet tons of people who are also backpacking. I think the guide books recommend only a few places in the city- but if you try to book a room they are usually full because lots of backpackers feels the need to stay somewhere Lonely Planet recommended. When you get into town with your bags locals will see you and will run out and offer you a room-go check them out (donât go with anyone too shady!)- we stayed at great places with huge clean rooms, balconies, cable and private bathrooms for the same price as our friends who shared a dorm. Saigon is a busy busy place and youâll have no trouble keeping yourself occupied. From Saigon you can go to the Chu Chi tunnels which is a popular day trip. We also did the local water park which was super fun â 10,000 tiny kids and a group of 8 adults on extreme waterslides. The Reunification Palace is popular and interesting. You can easily stay in Saigon for a week.

Nha Trang is much quieter than Saigon (smaller as well) with less going on. The beach there is huge and for whatever reason no one uses it (we went during peak season and it was still empty!)

Hue is tiny and has enough to see for a day-two days max. There is an old fortress with a Forbidden Chinese City inside. Hue isnât too popular of a destination so you wonât see a huge number of other tourists.

Hoi An is my favorite place by far- the city is beautiful and the historic districts are spectacular. The renovated historic area sits along the canal which makes the city very picturesque. We did a great cooking class with Red Bridge Cooking School- they have a restaurant off the canal and you book your reservation there- they then take you to an organic farm where you pick herbs, then to their kitchen which is a semi-outdoor area where you cook and drink beer all day. You then take a boat back to the area of town with their restaurant- I highly highly recommend this class- everyone I have ever met who has taken it has loved it. It was a bit out of our price range though, but worth every penny. We made our own Pho (including the noodles) and all types of other local dishes. Good times. Hoi An is also hugely popular for getting custom made clothing and shoes. I had a backpack with my gear for one year which meant no buying anything, but I would have loved to. Other people we met had great custom boots/heels made, fancy jacketsâ¦basically you can take them any picture from any magazine and they will reproduce the garment for you at a fraction of the cost. The local food in Hoi An is nice as well-try the white rose. Along the canal you will find a huge tent covered area with maybe 20 little stalls (it looks like one restaurant, but each section of tables is owned by different people). Try the deep fried wontons with shrimp on top + beer. Yum. We tried a few stalls, but ended up liking the stall closest to the water the best. Across the canal on the less touristy side are a bunch of restaurants and bars- they do give free shots and offer good deals on their already cheap beer.

Hanoi is pretty-we did do the water puppet show (cheesy ,but good for a laugh and the musicians are pretty neat). You can also get to Halong Bay on a day trip-every hostel/hotel offers a package. We went when it was cold/foggy so we couldnât see the great scenery, but our friends made it over there when it was warm and got to swim and enjoy the nice weather. Great trip, try to go in nice weather though! Hanoi also has the cheapest beer EVER, something like 10 cents a glass- they open kegs on the side of the street and you sit on little kiddy chairs and enjoy the brew. Hanoi also has amazing bakeries with French pastries - they are some of the best pastries Iâve had anywhere in the world!

Make sure to eat Pho every chance you get!

Have Fun!

Is this girl just playing me around?

Daniel C

ok this is what happens, she said she likes me a lot. I like her too. We went out a couple of times. But, we go to different schools. And today, she basically used me as a driver to the mall to meet his best guy friend to shop and I just dragged with bags behind them while they chat. I feel very shi*tyy. It is like they are on a date, I am jsut a..
I just feel like a loser

Answer
You didn't and don't have to drive her anywhere. She shouldn't be controlling you and you should've told her you have somewhere to be and left them instead of feeling like the third wheel following them around.

WHAT ARE THE HIGH SCHOOLS LIKE IN SYDNEY AUSTRALIA ????

Q. Like what kind of social life do they have , partying ( the public schools ) do they supposedley have the popular people , what are lthey like ?

Answer
They're pretty different to the typical American high school. We don't have Middle School down here, so High School starts in 7th grade (11-12 year-old kids) and we finish in September in 12th Grade. Then during October/November, we sit our final school exam called the HSC. Essentially, you go to High School for 13 years to do your HSC. And it's like... torture.

There's two different types of schooling - public and private. Private school kids generally travel to the city with their blazers and oversize bags. Public schools aren't as demanding. We still have to wear a uniform, though. But both schools are equally educated. Generally, people from lower socioeconomic classes send their kids to public schools, and because their desire to get an education is not so demanding, they tend to flunk. Which affects the overall rank of the school and therefore, degrades the reputation of public schools.
Don't get me wrong, I went to a public high school and I turned out fine. I think.

We don't do American Football or baseball or have cheerleaders. And we don't have as many clubs as American High Schools do. We most certainly have social cliques down here, too. And I'm almost positive that Australians party harder than Americans do. Our drinking age is 18. Most of us can get drunk *legally* by the end of school, anyway.

We start school in February and end in December and our year has 4 terms rather than 2 semesters. 11th and 12 grades are different, though. 11th grade only runs for 3 terms and 12th grade ends around this time of year. Grades 7-10th are deemed "junior" years and 11th and 12th grade are "senior" scholars.
7th and 8th grade, you have to do the subjects the school sets you (English, Maths, Science, Australian History and Geography, D&T/art and PHDPE)
9th and 10th grade, you have to do English, Maths, Science, PHDPE Aus History and Geography, and 3 subjects of your own choosing. It can range from commerce to woodwork to dance to music etc.
And in 11th and 12th grade, you can pick whatever subjects you want, but you must choose English. The sciences offered are broader (bio, physics, chem, earth and environmental) and social science classes become more interesting. You can pick Modern/Ancient History, Legal Studies, Business Studies, Economics...
And with maths, you don't do a term of algebra and calculus and geometry - it's all condensed into one course. In 11th and 12th grade you can pick from simple general maths to arduous, demanding 4 unit maths. Or no maths, like I did :p

American High Schools are a lot... bigger. I went to the performing arts high school in Las Vegas last year and was quite literally shocked at how BIG everything was.

How much money do you spend on school supplies (per child)?

beachchick

New York state just gave $200 per child to welfare recipients for school supplies. I think that is way more than school supplies cost (I've never done the supply shopping, so I don't really know). I am a college students and with text books I have spent less than $200 on back to school supplies. I don't think clothing should be counted in the school supply cost, so I just don't see how $200 per child for school supplies is reasonable, it seems like a lot, about how much do you spend per child?

**I totally agree with working parents getting assistance to help with grocery bills and stuff, but it just seems like $200 is a lot for school supplies (although high schooler's might need it for graphing calculators and such-but most school will loan those out for the year). I do not agree with us feeding adults who choose not to work though.
I looked up a suburban 3rd grade school supply list, looked up prices at staples.com and I got just under $50. So if this is around the norm, isn't $200 excessive?
Mommy of 5-- you spend $150 total on all four kids-wow $200 per kid really is generous. I guess these kids are getting new outfits when their peers whose parents don't get assistance might not be able to afford new clothes or maybe have to re-use old backpacks. The worst part is that no one was notified (meaning no one in the public at all) so many parents have already started using the money elsewhere (ie. one store owner said some parents were excited to have more money for beer, cigarettes, etc. that they didn't know they were getting)
Ganja-how am I bitter? I just think $200 per child for school supplies is a little excessive. I don't think it is unfair that I didn't get any money, as I come from an upper middle class family and don't need the money. I was just wondering what most people spend because I truly felt $200 was a bit much. And honestly my main thought was that many non-welfare/foodstamp families (not even including mine) don't have $200 to spend on each children for extra stuff like new outfits and the best school supplies, etc. So no, I'm not being bitter smart one, I was not thinking in the way you are ASSuming I was. It has nothing to do with me. I am an extremely compassionate person and volunteer for and with poorer people. Which is why my first thought was they get $200 per child, paid for through the taxes of people who don't have that much to spend on there own children for back to school. I think giving them something is helpful, maybe $100, but $200 is definitely too much. So ur wrong
Ganja-to argue in an easy way you can understand
"you sound .... unconcious and concerned soley about 'what you didnt get and how unfair that is"-- I find it completely fair that I didn't get money for school supplies-I don't need it (not a kid and don't have any and I have money and parents with money to buy supplies). I am aware of people needing assistance, especially those who don't get it. They don't need $200 for school supplies, other low income families who don't qualify for help (and even middle class families) can't afford to spend $200 per child in a good year for back to school.

Why dont you find a little humility and compassion in your life?
I never said they don't deserve help, I just said $200 seemed like a bit much for school supplies. I am a very humble person-if u met me you wouldn't think i come from an upper middle class family.
You single out poor people to make yourself sound righteous -umm no I'm just saying $200 per kid is a lot. righteous? no, nice try.
Ganja-would $200 for back to school have helped your reading ability-I said "not even including mine" (to sow that I'm not concerned with my family not getting anything-b/c we don't need it we can afford school supplies-we work) in the people who can't afford $200. That $200 coulda bought you a reading comprehension tutor. Clothing is not a back to school supply. The welfare and wic money their parents already get to raise their child includes the basic needs of clothing and shoes. Taxpayers shouldn't be paying taxes to buy new cloths and shoes for these kids, when their own kids are using hand me downs, last years cloths, last years shoes, last years back pack, etc. Go to France or China and live where everyone gets what they need and doesn't have to work for it. The government could have given the money to the schools to buy the supplies-buying in bulk if would be cheaper per child and 8 times as many kids who can't afford new school supplies can now have school supplies.

Answer
I have 4 children in school. From Kindergarten to 5th grade. No including book bags I spent $75 for all of them, and that included extra pencils, pens, notebooks, etc for home use. With book bags included I spent roughly $150. on all 4.

I don't buy name brand I buy whats cheap. Like the folders I buy the cheap ones and once we find out what they are being used for the kids are free to "decorate" them the way they like. They can also print things off the net and put them on there. I am not going to spend $2.00 on a Hannah Montana folder when i can get the colored ones the school asks for, for $.15

So I agree $200.00 for just supplies is way to much.

Yes it is way to much, I always wait until the school supply specials most stores have to buy for my kids, and like i said I'll buy the item for $0.15 over $2.00. I have also in the past had my kids reuse bookbags. I'll buy them really nice ones with no characters 1 year and it has to last them 2. I don't buy those cheap $5.00 ones they fall apart way to easy.
