My children are 10 12 and 6 , they want to sleep in the backyard in our big tent. I live in a faily decent part of town. but are they too young to be out there all night by themself or am i just being too strict? My kids think im the worst mom ever today. someone let me know what you would do. i cant sleep out there with them all night, because of my shoulder issue. what can be some options>

Answer
My kids were sleeping in a tent at 5000 feet when they were only just walking. We carried them. Child carrier in front and rucksack at the back.
At ten they were higher than that...staying in mountain huts at 7000 feet and carrying backpacks with their night clothes and teddy bears in. And wearing gorgeous little Austrian walking boots.....
Loved it! Playing with snow under the baking Alpine sun in July!
Seeing mountains 50 miles across the valley and sunrises lighting the peaks with pink and orange light.
Ten year old eyes seeing that at 6am and eating breakfast outdoors with paradise for a view.....what a joy for them.
Lay down for a nap at midday with sweet Alpine flowers all around them. See the lake a thousand feet below shimmering in the sunlight, eat with children from other lands and sing with them outside the hut at night under the canopy of stars...sweet mountain songs coming back to us in soft echos across the deep valleys.
Reckon they sleep well at night, wake happy in the morning? They still do.

Got a bad shoulder? You can be warmer in a sleeping bag outside than under the duvet indoors.
I couldn't walk for two years. Lost a lot of school.
Later I was in an international marching event...top civilian and military teams from around the world.....The Nijmegan Marches. Tough one. Succeed with honor for team and country. And then enjoy the blister parties till dawn....a huge and happy event.
Walking cycling and camping out got me fit when I could walk again. It got my legs working. It gave me paradise again.
Being out. Like yours are hoping for. Adventure....fun.
They need it. They're asking.
You can get an air bed for a few dollars for occasional use, or pay more for velvety cozy luxury...still cheap. You can be comfortable.
Blow them up as hard or as soft as you like. Whatever your shoulder likes.
Variable mattress technology....try that with a spring mattress. A big double one all for you if you want.
Give the kiddies a bit of fun...happy their eyes up laughing..
Children love adventure if it isn't already smothered out of them. Play at pirates marooned on a desert island....spaceships, pioneer explorers.
Nooooo...you're not the worst by a long chalk. Some moms wouldn't even think of letting the children out at at all.
All covered in cotton wool and treated with total care and mommying loving and smothered with it. Kids in safe soft wrappers.
Misery for them. They can't grow like that. Kids need adventure.....it's fun.
Make it as safe as you can.....don't be too obvious about it by telling everyone you're sleeping out. You be there too.
Tucked up and warm, just like indoors.
Have a good night.
Midnight feast on the outdoor cookie stove...paradise for them.
Children grow into the space they've got. Give them more space they grow more....and they learn more.
It still has limits... you're just applying the limits to a bigger space.
Have fun.
Give it a couple of days if you like so you've time to get organized. Get some comfort things going for yourself. It's not on top of a mountain, just in the backyard. But you need a bit of time. Keeps them happy if it all goes smooth. That's means happy Mom too....
Get some goodies to eat outside ...a game to play...a story under the stars....nice warm bed for them...and lots of smiles.
Then you're ready to say yes...and see those happy eyes laughing with you....
Yahaaaayyyyy!!

How do I safely put on and take off a frame backpack carrier (with "kickstand" that holds my 22 pound son?

Michele E

Answer
Set up your backpack back on a picnic table or surface that is above your knees. Loosen arm straps. Insert child. Put one arm through strap and then lift pack off table and put through other arm in one motion. This will eliminate a lift and twist from ground level that could tweak your back. Snug up straps. Reach back and "close" kickstand. Do the reverse for removal. Always have a hand on the backpack when putting on or taking off to eliminate tipping. Most backs have a handle of some sort on the top of the pack. The first time you try this have someone close by. After a while you will be a pro. Have a good hike!

How long does an insulated bag work for?

school bags for kids on sale image

~ <3 ~

I'm going to be at college for 12hrs, plus another 2hrs driving time.

If I were to keep some food in an insulated bag, APPROXIMATELY (to your best knowledge) how many hours max would it stay fresh for if:

-the food was reallly hot or frozen?
-it was just sorta cold?

Thanks.

Answer
I found this for you. Hope it helps!

Lunch Bags & Boxes
The first thing you will need is a container in which to pack the lunch. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money. For adults a small cooler makes a great lunch box. Fred uses a medium sized cooler. He is usually gone for 24 to 48 hours, so he needs alot of food to keep him going. For children and teenagers, you can usually find inexpensive lunch boxes and insulated lunch bags at yard sales and thrift stores.

Small children often prefer a plastic lunch box with cartoon characters on the side. I suggest you buy these as cheaply as possible. They only last for a year or two before the children drop them or the latch breaks. At $6 to $10 a piece, buying brand new boxes has never been a good investment for me. I have purchased them new when I desperately needed the thermoses that came with them. After the plastic lunch box broke, I purchased replacements from my local Goodwill. I continue to use the same thermos year after year.

If the art work on an older lunch box is shabby, you can easily replace it. Use rubber cement to glue down a new picture (cut to size) and then cover the picture with clear contact paper. I've done this, and it lasted almost 2 years, until the lunch box cracked and became unusable. Amy D. describes the process in detail in the first book of The Tightwad Gazette.

For older children insulated lunch bags work best. They don't have the juvenile connotations of plastic boxes with matching thermoses, so older kids usually don't object to carrying them. I like them because they don't break when they get drop-kicked across the livingroom by a budding football player. Since they have soft sides, it is easier to fit more food and odd-shaped containers in them too. They usually have zipper closing and shoulder straps for carrying them. I buy the largest ones I can find because I find them easier to fill. Many modern insulated bags have several extra zipper pockets and sections on the outside to carry little extras like napkins, spoons and salt or pepper packets. My boys like these but they aren't really necessary. Purchased brand-new, insulated lunch bags cost between $5 and $15. If you wait until back-to-school-sales you may find them cheaper. Over the summer they can often be found at yard sales. Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

What should I buy for back to school shopping in terms of clothes?

Messenger

I'm going in a week or so. I want to dress more girly this year. I'm usually tomboy-ish. My school outfit consists of a graphic tee, a sweater, skinny jeans, and sneakers. So...What should I buy to look more fashionable? Lol XD I'm new to this, haha.
I live near Boston, MA. It get's pretty cold around the end of October.
I live near Boston, MA. It get's pretty cold around the end of October.

Answer
hi! definitely buy clothes that you can wear with a lot of outfits for different looks rather than clothes that you can only wear in one way. clothes that you should buy less of because you can only wear them one way would be rompers and dresses. clothes that can be mixed and matched would be tank tops, skinny jeans, shorts, cardigans, cute v-necks, etc. you should definitely buy a few pieces that can be used to accessorize an outfit such as a scarf (my favorite!), jewelry, and different kinds of shoes. for example.. an outfit that is completed with boots would look different than the same outfit with flats or sneakers.

anyways, for the bare minimum of new wardrobe options, i'm going to list what i would suggest you to buy:
2 tank tops in neutral colors that would look good with anything (such as white and navy) ~$8 each
2 pairs of jeans (a light wash and a dark wash for variety) ~$30 each
1 cardigan (navy or black would match with anything) ~$20
2 jackets for winter(maybe one in (faux) leather and one in your favorite color) ~20 each
1 pair of shorts (denim shorts always look good with anything) ~$10
2 v-neck or scoopnecks or whatever you like (these are like t-shirts, but with a girly touch. they will be your basic attire) ~$10 each
2 pairs of shoes (personally, i like boots but you can get flats which are super girly or toms which are really popular lately) ~$30 each depending on the brand
2 accessories (again, i love scarves because they're big enough to stand out and they're practical for cold days but you can choose a chunky necklace or a hair band or really anything that you think fits you) ~$10 each

these are the things that i think would allow you the most variety and ability to mix and match (therefore the best price!) for the items i listed above, the total comes out to $246. for anyone wishing to purchase a whole new wardrobe i would think that $300 should be the minimum amount that they should expect to spend so, if $246 isn't a lot for you, feel free to spend the remainder of the money on a splurge of your choice. like maybe if you had your eye on a cute dress or bag.

now i'm going to list stores at the mall that you can purchase these items: charlotte russe, hollister, forever 21, abercrombie and fitch, abercrombie kids (if you're on the small side and you love the clothes from abercrombie and fitch, go here instead because they're a lot cheaper and they're the same clothes), cotton on, ever, rainbow, macys, aeropostale, tillys, etc.

again, these are just suggestions of things that i would buy if i wanted to buy a girlier wardrobe for the new school year. make sure you try everything on before you buy it and only buy things that look good on you and flatter your figure. when going to the mall, wear something neutral like a pair of jeans and a plain shirt so you can see how something works with the clothes that you already own. also, when you're trying something on like a shirt, put your hair in a pony tail to see how the item looks with your hair up and down. sometimes it makes all the difference. bring a girlfriend or your parents for a second opinion and never let anyone make you feel like you need to buy something just because it's girly. we all got our own styles and we should never stray too far away from it. anyways, i hope i helped and i hope that you aren't scared off by the total that i calculated for you. have a great school year <3

edit: oops i forgot to add.. if money is a problem for you, don't buy all of these items at once because not only will you be forcing yourself to find all of these things at one time, you will be hitting yourself in the head because everything you just bought will be like half price during black friday sales. you might want to hold off on some of the wintery things for black friday sales.

Are there any templates for daily activity reports for preschool?

I am a half day preschool teacher. I provide a daily letter home letting parents know what we did for that day. I also provide a monthly newsletter containing important information. I want to find a daily communication template letting parents know how their individual child was during the day.

Answer
If you send a note home for every child every day you're setting yourself up for a LOT of work, especially if you're only there half a day. Do you mean just how their mood was, toileting, snack, that sort of thing? I've included some links to what I think you're looking for.

If I were you, I would make my own. I didn't do a daily one for preschoolers, but when I taught toddlers, we sent home a note something along the lines of "Today Mary was really busy in the block area. She and Johnny built an airplane. I really loved watching them share the blocks and engage in this play together." Things like that. Just a few sentences. We didn't send every child a note every day, but we wrote about 3-5 notes each day and kept track of who had one and who didn't. If the child did something spectacularly interesting or something, we might send an extra note.

Another option is to have communication notebooks. They keep them in their backpacks. Give them to you each day. You check to see if parents wrote anything to you. Answer if needed. Write a note in some of the notebooks every day, or as many as you have time for. Then the notebook goes back in the backpack and goes home each day.

Another idea for saving paper and time: If you want parents to know what was going on at school each day, how about getting a big dry erase board. Make permanent sections for each area like "music, Art, Blocks, Dramatic Play": whatever is most important to you. Then each day you can write in "We sang X" or "We did marble painting." Even have a circle time just before going home and ask the kids to tell you what to put. Post the dry erase board where parents can see it.

How did you prepare your toddler for preschool?

bubbliebub

I'm more interested in how you got your child prepared for the structure and rules they will have to follow at school.

Answer
Preschool teaches the structure and rules they'll need for school, the preparation you need is more in terms of preparing your child to leave you. If your child already attends a church daycare, is babysat by relatives, etc. and is okay, then your little one should be fine.

But, if your child cries and clings and you've never been apart since birth, you may want to work on that. Practice by leaving your little one with dad or another familiar adult first, get on eye level and say, "I love you, you'll have lots of fun and Mommy will be back to pick you up." Give a hug and walk out the door. Do not draw out the goodbye. Go to run an errand so you're not hearing the crying. Come back in an hour (less than that doesn't give the child time to calm down and forget you) with lots of hugs and kisses saying, "I told you I would be back, now tell me the fun things you did." Do not tell your little one how much you missed her and get weepy upon your return or departure. You may need to repeat the process several times over the course of a couple weeks, just be consistent with departures and returns. When your child is comfortable being left with another adult for 2-3 hours at your home, then drop your child off with the same adult at their home so they are in an unfamiliar environment.

If separation isn't your problem, then I'd suggest touring the school with your child a week before her start date and talk about all the fun things you see the big kids doing. Play up that she's a big kid now and how proud of her you are. For my oldest, we bought him a special Thomas the Tank backpack to wear to school, in which we packed his familiar cuddly blanket for nap time. For my daughter, we played up how she was now going to get to go to school like her big brother and cousins and that she would have to listen to her teacher to learn to do the fun things there.

I am new to the US, so I am curious what should I have to pay:
- books?
- kids activities?
- food?
- tuition?

Answer
In public school, you don't have to pay tuition, it comes out of your taxes. You might have to pay for his lunch, but you can apply for free lunch. Books are usually free as long as he doesn't damage them in any way or lose them, and kid activities such as field trips you do have to pay for but you can choose whether or not to let him go on the field trips. You will have to get him school supplies such as folders, pencils, backpack, etc. The teacher should give you a list of what you need to buy

What should I teach in India about Canada?

niamh

I a little over a month I will be leaving for India on a missions trip to teach is various day schools. I have decided I will be teaching social studies because it was always one of my favourite subjects in elementary school. I have a booklet I found from grade three that I will be recreating and handing out but I was wondering if there were other things I could do to teach the students about canada. Any elementary school teachers have any advice on what or how to teach them ? keep in mind I have limited resources, anything I am going to bring to he kids (booklets, handouts) I will have to make and print here and bring them with me in my backpack. Thank you in advance.

Answer
Introduce new games/sports! Learn them basic language (e.g. Hello)
what Canada is famous for etc! Its really teaching them basic knowledge

My school bag is really heavy, and it hurts my back but I have no choice but to carry it. :(
Will I have back probs later in life?
I mean am I more likely do develop back problems? I already find it difficult to maintain a good posture, I'm always slouching. It's not comfortable for me to sit up straight. :(
Thanks, much appreciated

Answer
Not likely. I am in the Army and I've been carrying around 70lb+ rucksacks + medical aid bags around 5-6 days a week on a regular basis for years, and I have developed no back problems, so I doubt a little 15lb bookbag will cause it.

Anyone know where i can buy a orange or black rucksack?

I need to pick out my school bag and i can't decide. I don't want to use a very nice bag bc in the past they have gotten dirty. I want a bag that will hold up and is still cute. Probably a tote bag or like a larger handbag..something along the lines of herve chaplier or longchamp maybe? thank you!
i don't like backpacks. i'm more of a handbag type of person. i am willing to spend money just not a lot like louis vuitton unless it wont break and get ruined.

Answer
Totes are so great for school bags! They let you be feminine yet practical!

It sounds like you have something in mind already.

If you don't want to pay X amount because you know that the bag will get dirty, try going on eBay or Amazon and getting one for way less! Don't be scared of eBay, not everything is used! Lots of stuff comes with tags still attached!

But if you're looking for something a little different, check out Pop Deluxe. http://www.popdeluxe.net

They have great, perfect sized totes that are pretty snazzy! And its where I buy all of mine! I always get compliments!

best kids backpacks for school 2013 image

Trayvon has been suspended three times in high school, and in fact the very day he physically assaulted Zimmerman was a day that he had been suspended.
Trayvon's text messages indicated he had been attempting to illegally trying to buy a gun without a license in the time following up to his fight with Zimmerman
Travyon's text messages indicated he had an obsession with and was an active participant in school fights
Trayvon was caught with jewelry in his backpack, which was then confiscated by police
Trayvon had school grades so bad that when the defense tried to show them in court, Trayvon's parents called it "character assassination"

Trayvon had child pornography on his phone (aka pictures of "underage nude females") see http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/17/zimmerman-prosecutors-lawsuit_n_3607470.html

If I was an African American, I would be extremely offended by suggestions that Trayvon Martin is a typical example of a black teenager. The evidence uncovered by the investigation into his death show he is the absolute polar opposite of a model citizen. Had Trayvon been an adult and not subject to his legal privileges as a juvenile, he could have been sentenced to decades in prison as a felon and sex offender for the child pornography he recorded on his phone.

Answer
Trayvon Martins Juvenile jacket looks the size of the book war and peace.
His parents did a wonderful job of raising him. They did a wonderful job of
bilking the Home owners association where the incident took place for
1 million 600 thousand in a wrongful death settlement. So who is living
off of the kid now. What about the T shirts, the Hats and the rest of the
marketing materials.

See what the media can do. In martins case they almost succeeded in
making a silk purse out of a sows ear. But people who know how to dig.
And can bring information forward. Ruined that for the Martin family.

Answer
I don't know if you like Roxy, Hurley, Volcom, Billabong... I love those brands and they have super cute stuff. You typically can find it at Macy's, Pacsun, Quiksilver, Tilly's. Depending where you live you might even have a Roxy store near you. They have different sizes colors and a wide variety of purses to choose from. I got two fairly large bags from Macy's this past summer and I used them as my school bag and I also use it as a diaper bag. Very versatile. Anyways good luck in finding one!!!

AND! (last question, promise) what would be great gift bags for everyone showing up (or do you not do that)...i'm horrible at planning a wedding.

Answer
Wedding receptions at parks is a great idea. I've been to a few. Just make sure the park isn't reserved for someone else so you know you will have a place to hold your reception. If not, then make reservations. You might have to pay, but it is WAY cheaper than a reception center.

I like the trick-or-treat bags idea, if that's really something you want to do.

Suggestions for improving this chapter?

I am 15 years old and I am trying to write a novel. This is the chapter I just finished drafting where the main character, a twelve year old girl, meets the other girls in her class at her new school and starts deciding what she thinks about them. I don't have anyone else to ask about it other than my dad who doesn't read this kind of book and hasn't ever given me any useful feedback, so I'm posting it here.

Chapter 3, make friends -4/10/10

Emily looked out at her new classroom. Emily and her teacher were the only fare skinned people in the room. The teacher introduced Emily, or tried to. "Ki oru class,â She said, but was immediately intterupted by a loud chorus of âItâs ki oraâ To Emily the first pronounciation sounded better, but the teacher corrected herself and went on. âKi ora class, Today we have a new classmate, your name, is?â
âEmily.â said Emily.
âWell, itâs nice to meet you Emily.â Said the teacher. âYou can call me Mrs. Finn. Ok, please find a seat Emily.â Emily walked in the gap between the desks that went through the middle of the classroom. The desks were lined up width-wise in groups of three, there were a couple of spare seats to choose from. A girl whose long-brown-with-highlights hair was tied in a ponytail waved to Emily.
"Emily, sit over here" Said the girl. Emily sat down next to the girl.
"My nameâs Jo, And this is Tania." Said the girl. On the other side of Jo was a chubby girl with very dark skin and black hair tied in a top knot, or Emily thought that was what it was called. Sheâd never seen one before.
âHello Jo, hello Tania, nice to meet you" said Emily.
Jo looked like she was about to reply, but Mrs. Finn stopped them
âQuiet now, itâs time for mathâ
Mrs Finn handed out math sheets to the students. Emily thought she would like Mrs Fyn.

Later, after being relesed for recess, Emily followed Jo and Tania out of the classroom. Both of them stopped in the room where the bags were kept and stood there facing four other girls. âWhereâd ja come from Emilyâ asked one of them âIâm from Christchurchâ Emily said. âDid you move because of the earthquake?â she asked, grabbing a pink backpack from a hook.
âYes,â said Emily,
my parents got really upset and then we went to stay with my granma in Wellington, my Mum decided she would rather stay in Wellington but we have to wait for the insurance company to pay us and all the good houses in Wellington were really expensive, so she brought a house out here cause they seem to be cheaper here.â
âThatâs cause nobody wants to live hereâ said Jo. The girl with the pink backpack pulled out a small package. âAtawhai Can I have one?â asked Tania âSure, Ya want one Jo, oh yeah you donât smokeâ WHAT! thought Emily, How can they be smoking,
âisnât that illegalâ Emily said out loud.â¨âYeah Atawhaiâ said one of the other girls, in a teasing voice âIsnât that Illegalâ
âWhy would it be illegal?â asked Atawhai.
âUnderaged smoking?â Emily guessed. She wasnât sure if there was a legal age limit for smoking, but she knew kids werenât allowed to buy cigeretts.
Jo said she didnât care, âjust give me my *swearword* smokeâ
except she actually said the word.
Once Shellyâs older sister had been caught smoking in high school, And sheâd been expeled. Emily had never encountered kids her own age smoking, and she thought it was discusting.
âItâs a smoke free school.â Emily said, âOnce my friends sister was caught smoking...â
âThere not smoking at schoolâ said Jo, âTheyll go outside into the car parkâ
âYeah, well, see yaâ said Atawhai, as she and Jo walked off.
âArnât you allowed to smoke?â Asked Tania, she was talking to Emily.
âNoâ said Emily.
âAre you allowed to do drugs?â
âOf course not! said Emilyâ
âAre you allowed to drink?â
âOnly in comunionâ
âDo you go to church?â One of the other girls intterupted
âYesâ Said Emily
Tania ignoored her
âAre you allowed to swear?â
âNoâ said Emily.
âAre you allowed to gamble?â â¨âCan you quit it with the dumb questions, Iâm not a bad personâ said Emily.
âOhâ Said Tania, and she walked away
Emily walked out and sat at a picnic table. âWhere am I?â she thought.

Answer
When you're using dialogue, and you're putting 'said Emily', or something after the quotes, put a comma at the end of the speech, and uncapitalize the word 'said'. Example;

"My feet hurt," said Eddie.

If the dialogue is a question, replace the comma with a question mark. If it's an exclamation, use an exclamation mark. Different examples;

"Don't you hate it when your feet hurt?" wined Eddie.
"My feet are killing me!" shouted Eddie.

If it's obvious who's saying the words, you don't even have to put the person's name afterwords. Example;

Eddie was sitting in his chair, bent over, rubbing his feet. "I wish I'd never went out for that really long walk!"

Also, when a new person is talking, start a new paragraph.
Don't do this;
"My name is Sarah," said Sarah. "My name is Eddie," said Eddie.
Do this;
"My name is Sarah," said Sarah.
"My name is Eddie," said Eddie.

Alsooo, make sure to indent with every new paragraph!! There are several grammatical errors as well, such as when you said 'There not smoking", it should say "They're not smoking", as in 'they are'. 'There' is a destination word. Don't always say 'said', either. It makes your writing sound bland and boring, and makes the characters sound unemotional. Try to switch it up a bit, use words like 'exclaimed', 'shouted', 'laughed', 'pouted', 'moaned', ect.

There's a lot more to mention but I'm just gonna leave it at that! :D Good luck!

Is the Christchurch (D8) area safe for a single person (American) staying alone in an apt?

H

I've stayed in hotels in D2 previously, but I need an apt for work. I found a good one on daft, but on google maps, it's across from what I think is a homeless shelter (St Vincent De Paul) & there is graffiti on a lot of the walls & quite a few barbed wire fences. Regardless, the apartment does appear very nice - but I just don't know if there will be issues walking around there - particularly at night since it is near temple bar too (I used to go out there at night myself - but maybe not as much this trip). Should I just take taxis home? Work will not pay any more than this & it is extremely close to where I need to be.

Answer
No,I strongly wouldn't recommend Christchurch.
Its a very rough area,a lot of drug dealers etc going round lots of estates!
From your description it sounds very rough, yes the apartment may look nice,as do all properties on websites, but I can almost guarantee after a few weeks it will be faulty!

Also, temple bar is a very rough area.I have gone there lots of times on school trips and I hate it.I actually get nervous going down the different lanes.Everywhere you go people are staring right at your purse or bag.

Not trying to scare you or anything but half the time those taxi drivers are driving drunk. My friend had to get one and was terrified all the way home.

It was shown on TV a few weeks ago on all those rough estates around Dublin, and Christchurch was mentioned as one of them.

So sorry to tell you,but I wouldn't stay in Christchurch if you paid me.Maybe its just me,but it seems a very rough area!

Hope I helped tho:)

What type of items are your kids required to purchase for school?

db2437

My children are expected to bring 1-3 boxes of Kleenex. Then depending on the kid several of following items: dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, clorox wipes, headphones and/or liquid hand soap. I know that school budgets are tight but so is my budget at home. These items add up quickly - we have four children.

In addition to these janitoral items that we are expected to supply, the two middle school age children are required to have a seperate, new pair of shoes for gym class. Yes, I mean in addition to the new shoes that they bought with their back to school apparel.

All of this expense seems excessive to me. Is this typical of all school districts or do I have reason to be upset by this?
It is public school. I think if the janitoral list was a request instead a demand, I would be okay with sending some supplies. I just think it is crazy that I have sent almost $40 in janitoral supplies to school in the last two days and my kindergartener hasn't even gone yet! Of course that is in addition to the shoe thing. We did by inexpensive shoes but even $20 or $30 multiplied times for four is a lot. I'm just really aggravated with the whole thing.

Answer
I wish I lived in some of the places in the other answers! For Pre K last yr my son had to have (among other things) 2 pkgs safety pins (he used about 7 the whole year) EXPO markers (yes, big emphasis on expo) 2 bxs of baby wipes, 1 box gallon bags, (girls had to bring 1 box quart bags) 6 glue sticks, and 1 bttl shaving cream. (girls brought zip lock bags)

This yr for Kindergarten--(again, among other crap) 1 box 8 jumbo crayons, 1 box 16 regular crayons, 2 md size elmers glue, 10 lg glue sticks (are they sticking each other to the wall?) watercolors, 1 box quart zipper bags, 1 box gallon zipper bags, 2 boxes of 10 ct CLASSIC CRAYOLA (must, must, must) markers, 2 pkgs baby wipes, 1 bttl hand sanitizer (which Micah can only use sparingly, bc he has excema, and the alcohol drys his skin dreadfully) 1 pkg EXPO ONLY THIN TIP markers, and a backpack, plus we had to BUY a 5.00 book bag at the school. (fits one book, for their library days...wtf?) And of course some damn paper towels. Last yr he only needed 1 box of Kleenex, this year he needs 3. Most kids in Kindergarten just wipe their nose on their sleeves.

I would understand if SOME of these supplies were needed for the kids in the state programs such as Headstart, (Pre K for lower income families) but hell, they're not required to buy ANYTHING. And there's no such program after PreK. So what the fu*k are all these supplies being used for? OK, OK, maybe some of these outrageous demands are for the kids in his class that can't afford ALL their supplies--but there are lots of school drives around our area where they give out FREE supplies. And with 20 kids in a class, even if only half bring all the things on the list, we're still looking at 100 damn glue sticks. Give me a break.

Some friends in different states said that Micah's list sounded about like their kids' lists. So I guess it's normal in a lot of places. (I live in TX, btw) But I still think it's over the top and ridiculous. Plus, who knows how much money I'm going to be sending to school for the various events (field trips) and book fairs and parties this year?

I think that they should let you have back the supplies you bought that your child didn't use at the end of the year.

Here's an article about two Boston dads who invented (and are selling) a $175 backpack with bulletproof metallic insert to keep their kids safe at school. A good investment?

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=1016084

Answer
Buying this product would be a horrible idea.

You'd be benefiting a greedy manufacturer who intends to exploit the fear of parents by selling a product of questionable utility.

How can the armor material be a 'secret' and also meet NIJ standards? It's unlikely to have passed NIJ testing since there's no mention of 'MJ Safety Solutions' or âMy Childâs Packâ in the database of tested products. NIJ has several standards in different areas a reputable firm would have specified the standard met and the independent testing agency that verified compliance. Even if they do show compliance with some NIJ standards, how are these standards applicable for a kid using this product?

The examples, comparisons, and quotes used in the article are disturbing and misleading.
âWe have tested and tested this product and we are very excited about it. We researched every school shooting since 1900 and found that our product is resistant to 97 percent of all bullets used,âResistant to 97% of all bullets used in school shootings is a long way from showing that this product would have saved any lives in those school shootings.
The backpacks werenât due to go on sale until the start of the school year but Pelonzi brought the release date forward to Friday, days after a Herald review revealed how more than 500 weapons were recovered from Bostonâs public schools in the past year.
Clearly Pelonzi sees the benefit of using fear to sell his product.
The backpacks, which will cost $175, have a super-lightweight bullet-proof plate sewn into the back which weighs no more than a bottle of water. Pelonzi said the material used is a secret.

The plate material meets National Institute of Justice safety standards, said Pelonzi, and during a three-year testing phase, stood up to bullets as well as machete, hatchet and Ka-bar knife attacks.
In this and other articles Pelonzi is trying to both claim his armor is light in weight and offers the same protection as a police officer's body armor. This is especially apparent in other articles where he compares the weight of police body armor to the backpack without acknowledging the greater coverage provided by police vests.

Think of how kids carry backpacks. How much protection will this thing provide slung over one shoulder? Even worn on both shoulders it would provide poor protection in a close-quarters gun fight. Is Pelonzi willing to demonstrate his product under those conditions? Let's see a video of test dummies optimally protected with backpacks being fired on by a single shooter. Even if you restrict the shooter to a fixed position and give him a limited time he'll likely do some serious damage to these poorly protected students.
âIt seems to me that it would not serve our district-wide dress code which says that students cannot wear anything which is threatening or offensive,â said Jonathan Palumbo, Boston Public Schools spokesman.
Palumbo's argument seems lame at first glance, what's offensive or threatening about an armored backpack? Isn't it purely defensive? The point he's making is a good one, a student with this backpack might feel sufficiently protected to confront a gunman and escalate a potentially violent situation that might have been brought under control by trained authorities.

My primary concern about this product is the false sense of security it provides students and their parents. A student would require a great deal of training and practice to make any use of this as a protective device. I suggest that time would be better spent educating students how to react to these situations safely without limited body armor. I wouldn't want any kid deciding to rely on this type of protection. I'd rather they acted smart and retreated in a safe fashion.

Are there laws regarding "overcrowding" of school buses in Indiana?

Armandez

Looking online hasn't been a whole lot of help. I define overcrowding when you have people sticking out into the isles because there are 3 people being jammed into a seat. Looking online bus manufacturers rate their seats to hold up to 3 people, but they rate that based upon using children, while IF they rated the seats for adult sized high schoolers it probably be 2 people to a seat. Looking I saw something about a Federal motor vehicle safety standard No. 222 which said it isn't safe if all the occupants of the seat can not fit within the seat (meaning not hanging out in the isle). But I couldn't really find any safety standard No. 222 online or at least one that stated something like that. IF that safety standard does exist, what exactly does that mean? Does it mean that it is a law and pretty much it is completely illegal for a bus to be operating if it can not fit all its occupants into the seat properly or is just more a suggestion to schools that "hey you should try and keep it like this because this and this is safer"? The reason I ask is I happen to ride a bus overly crowded in my opinion and it is all High School people on it and just the other day there was 4 people jammed into one seat, you put so many high school people onto a bus it gets rowdy...and my school doesn't want to do anything about it. I understand the need or the want to save some money here or there but already 2 fights have nearly broken out, the other day it was a free for all as people started throwing things ranging from change, to pencils, to big heavy wooden hair brushes. Doesn't help the bus driver does nothing to attempt to keep control, the bus is going to kill me if I can't come up with the money to buy a car pretty soon. So if there is a law or something I can fight my school with, that would make my day.

Answer
There are laws in most states on overcrowding of school buses. However, manufacturer of bus states how many in a seat and may be 3. Doesn't account for bigger students so if manufacturer says that 3 people are in a seat, then can stick out in aisles. Shouldn't be but they get by it that way.

May restrict from having people stand on bus. But schools are getting by when manufacturer says 3 per seat. This is all true. I used to represent bus drivers and that was a problem. needed to have more buses on road in some areas.

A safety standard is not necessarily a law. it is a guideline. Very differnt. parents can make a difference if they will get together and go to the board and fight this. it takes community action.

Your parents can petition to have cameras on the buses which would help the bus driver by showing who the problem kids are and discipline could be doled out. Problem does exist if driver does not attempt to maintain contol. Driver has a duty to do that. Good luck to you. We tried as a union to stop the practice and to have proper number of buses. But it is a money issue with buses and drivers and the costs. Often there are buses that take kids who live less than a mile or so away. In some areas with money problems they have eliminated buses all together. Parents can drive kids to school. Kids can go on bicycles. Parents can pool rides. You need to get your parents support and tell them what is happening. You could ask them to go to school board to speak to this. You could talk to driver and get the name of their representative and see if you can contact them or if your parents will to try to get some support to approach the board to have only 2 per seat at high school level and 3 at elementary. Use the bigger kids and obesity issue for part of the argument as everyone knows we are growing bigger kids anymore. Take some photos if you can so you have some proof of what you say. Get the butts hanging out in the aisle or the aisles filled with backpacks or whatever. It is illegal to have objects in the aisles of the bus as that is a safety issue so get photos of that for your proof. Your local bus driver's union may welcome your support if your parents are involved. Many times the parents have more pull with a school board than the employees do. If the employees are not part of a union they have little say.

Kali K: What has that website got to do with my question? I went on it and I thought it was really odd!
thnx anonymous

Answer
You should know that showbags aren't widely known or used outside of Australia and New Zealand, so the responses you get here might be limited. Also, I haven't heard of the book and don't know how widely known it is. I did a little reading up on it, and I did a similar project when I was in school and thought it was a lot of fun. I suppose with this book (knowing only the little I do from outlines I found online) you could easily throw in stereotypical fairy stuff, but it would be better to individualise it.

The outlines I read online said the book had a romance. Did the characters give each other gifts or tokens that were important to the plot that you could replicate easily with supplys from the art and craft store? Look at what the major turning points were in the story and try to include something that symbolises or represents those moments - this will help you to get high marks, because it shows a good understanding of the text.

I need £2,500 to go on a school trip to New Zealand in 20 months Time. I'm 14 years old. Any ideas?

We found cigarettes in our 10th grade daughters backpack. What do we do?

LasVegasMo

We just found cigarettes in our 15 year olds back pack. (We were not snooping, she asked us to help her fix a zipper on the bag). She said she started smoking when she visited her mother this summer. How do we deal with this? We have always trusted her and given her a lot of freedom, but now this trust has been violated. I want to give her a home drug test to make sure this is all she is doing. What adivce can you offer.
I think a lot of our frustration is that she KNOWS how bad smoking is. She has been watching her grandfather battle lung cancer for the past 3 years. She has seen how hard it was for her gradfather, father, uncle, and aunt stop smoking (when we got the cancer diagnosi).
Yes, I am the step-mom. Her mother lives in another state. We have full custody because her mom is not responsible enough to parent. Her mom is an alcoholic. Her mother smokes. Her mother is currently married to a drug addict. I am sure our daughter is telling us the truth about starting to smoke at her mom's house. Her mom is not the type of person to act mature or responsible. Her mother probably knows and doesn't care (nor would she see any need to tell us). Her mother flew a boy out to visit this summer that we did not allow our daughter to date here because he dropped out of high school and had drug and alcohol issues. She said she felt left out when her mom and boyfriend were smoking so that's when she started.
TO "TERI M": Yes, I am the step-mom, BUT I am the ONLY one who is mothering this child. I said "WE" found the cigarettes which means her father AND I are dealing with this. Since I am raising this child and her mother is NOT in the picture except for a 4 week visit in the summer, then I do think it is my business. Her mother doesn't even call to check on her or find out about her school work or anything else about her own daughter. (she's a dead beat mom too -- we can't even get child support.) Don't get angry with me that I am taking care and raising a child whose birth mother is an irresponsible alcoholic. And she CAN'T choose to live with her mom -- the courts would NOT allow it. Her mom would have to get sober and get her life in order before a judge would even let have more visitation. If you have issues with step parents maybe you need couseling. Some of us are actually PARENTING.
We talked with our daughter's mother and she doesn't think the 15 year old should be smoking!!! This is good news, this is the most mature thing her mother has ever thought or said.

Answer
Yes, the trust has been violated, and I would not say to ignore it, but consider this: When confronted she admitted she was smoking and even told you when she started. As a mother I can guarantee that most teens when faced with this would say they are not mine, a friend put them there.(By the way , I didn't buy that either)

I admire your stand against tobacco, so many parents have told me as a parent who stands against tobacco to be glad it wasn't worse, which completely undermines my values. But you have a 15 year old child who is evidently dealing with a double set of standards, yours and those of her mother,

She has broken your trust, but she didn't go to great extremes to hide them. Insisting on a home drug test could make her feel that she couldn't share with you. Tobacco is not a gateway drug in itself. I am a mother of 4 children who were all teenagers at the same time. Due to a drowning accident, my husband died leaving me a single Mom of 3 teens and an 11 yr. old. Now my children are 17,19,21,and22. I tell you this to tell you I have had to deal with a variety of teen problems at one time or another. May I give you a few ideas that helped me keep my sanity:

When something upsets you so much, give yourself time so that you don't say or do something based more on the emotion of the moment than in reason. My children would sometimes be told "I am very mad, and you will be dealt with, but I have to have time to decide what I am going to do." They knew that was not the end of it, and I had time to put things in proper context.

Just because they have betrayed your trust in one area, doesn't mean they have betrayed your trust in all things. Kids need us to trust them, but we should not have a blind trust. I have often overheard my kids talking with their friends, and their friends have said (not knowing I could hear from the other room) "I have never done that, but Mom or Dad think I do, so I might as well." Sadly, too many times I have seen them slip into that behavior. (Especially relting to sex and drugs) Unless there are other reasons you suspect drug use(research the signs of drug use in teens) then by all means SKIP THE DRUG TEST!

May I suggest having her read the effects tobacco has on your health, your local health department should have information written for teens, and if possible make her visit and talk to people who are suffering from diseases contracted from smoking, such as heart disease, emphysemia, lung or throat cancer. If you do not know anyone, ask friends and coworkers. If that does not help, contact a nursing home and ask them if they have anyone there with these conditions who yur daughter can visit. Because of privacy laws, they cannot give you names, but if you leave your name and number they could ask patients if they would be willing to share with you and then you could be contacted after the patients have agreed. You can tell them all day, but when you see someone who is on oxygen and and can't complete a sentence without gasping for air, it puts a face on the disease. My Dad suffered from emphysemia and died my Sr. year in high school, and it took all my desire to smoke.

Realize when you remove the cigarettes, she will have withdrawals, and will find herself very irritable and somewhat overwhelmed. She will need your support through this.

Last, but not least, TALK TO THE MOTHER! You should be assured that when she goes back to her mothers the smoking will not be accepted. If her mother smokes, then she should lock her cigarettes up if she can't refrain during the visit.

Please ,while you are dealing with this, focus on the positives in your daughters life. She may feel like a failure and may be worried if she will ever regain your trust. Let her know that yu will not tolerate tobacco use, but it is the tobacco you dislike so much, that you still love her.

When you take her freedom, give a clear cut plan on what she will have to do to gain your trust and each freedom back. Don't make her think you will never trust her again.

How do i fix this zipper!?

isabel.

Today before leaving my house for school i broke my zipper on my bag. I was late and in a hurry so i wasnt paying much attention.. This bags zippern has always been a little hard to open and closen because of the metal zipper. I really like this bag though, any ideas on how to fix this zipper? Picture below...

http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad65/candieesweet/6a76c9f1.jpg

Answer
I'm no expert, but I would lower the handle part as low as possible, then enter the other side the same way as if I were starting my jacket zipper. Once I got it started, I would install a safety pin at the bottom to prevent the separation from happening again.

What school bag should I bring?

-change my bag, if so where can I buy a large bag that is not too expensive (black)
-should I just keep my rucksack?

Answer
keep the rucksack most people at my school who wear handbags like Pauls boutique and sh@@ like that, are hoes. you could get a better looking rucksack like the rucksacks in top shop, new look or shops similar to these. i know quite a few people who are quite popular with people but were rucksacks like ones from those shops.
i would go for the cheaper new look ones but they still look quiet nice even thought they're not quite what i would go for, but are still pretty good.
here's the rucksacks for new look:

here is the rucks sack for topshop: http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogNavigationSearchResultCmd?catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&langId=-1&viewAllFlag=false&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=208548&parent_categoryId=204484&beginIndex=1&pageSize=200#catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&langId=-1&viewAllFlag=false&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=208548&parent_categoryId=204484&beginIndex=1&pageSize=200&refinements=category~[209977|208548]&noOfRefinements=1

but if you go into the high street your probably find better stores with better rucksacks

I'm just curious, cause I really wish I lived in the 70s, it seemed so much easier!

Answer
I went through the 1970's as a teenager. Actually it really depended on who you were & exactly where you lived. For a black teenager growing up in say ; the harlem section of manhattan ; life was brutal & dark. But if you were a white middle class teenager living in a middle class neighborhood ; life was actually pretty good. It was a different world back then. I myself grew up in white middle class Connecticut. Our parents were office workers, technicians, scientists, doctors, factory workers, teachers, etc. Our parents had lots of money. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings which our parents used to buy stocks & bonds & nice big houses & nice new cars. I'm talking about the 1973 - 1979 time frame. Our parents, most of whom got married in the late 1950's, were shaking loose the shackles of restraint & beginning to discover their "true self". Or so they thought. They started getting divorced & started doing the "disco thing" every nite after work. Or alot of our parents used to stay late at the office. And alot of our parents were into smoking grass too. But not as much as we did.The cost of living was alot cheaper back then than it is today. Alot of allowance money (i got $5 a day), alot of freedom to do our thing (wear levis jeans & concert shirts to school), hardly any responsibilities>> take out the trash & rake the leaves maybe>>> big deal. Some of us teenagers got discipline by parents, but most of us did not. We were very spoiled. We teenagers really took advantage of the situation. Our parents >>> should have been alot more strict with us. But they were not. I myself belonged to the "stoner crowd". In the late 1960's & very early 1970's it was called the "hippie crowd". After 1973 we were known as "stoners" or "heads". Alot of us stoners never completed high school. A pack of cigarettes was i think 20 Cents if i recall correctly. And a can of coca cola was 20 Cents. We had every convenience at our disposal growing up in middle class connecticut. There was absolutely no excuse for being bored. There was : the library, for the really mellow quiet ones.(us stoners were not quiet), there was : bowling alleys, soda shops, movie theaters, & the roller rink. The roller rink was the real hot hangout spot for alot of us stoners. And there was alot of woods back then for to hang out & get stoned. Alot of us teenagers (yes even some of us stoners) were given a car by our parents on our 16th birthday. I didn't get one, but some stoners in our town did. On the weekends sometimes we would pile into someones car and drive down to the coast & go hang out on long island sound. Back then you could find quiet spots & build a small bonfire. Or we used to go into the woods & hang out there & smoke grass & smoke hash until we dropped. Or we used to hang out at someones house all day from noon or so all the way until 11PM. We used to smoke tremendous amounts of grass. Im talking about smoking about 10 "Lids" or more every day between say 7 or 8 people. A Lid was a large bag of grass (about 1 ounce) that you bought for $10 dollars each. We used to smoke bricks of hash that one guy used to get from his older brother. We used to "cut out" (skip school) to start drinking bottles of southern comfort & smoking hash early in the moning. By the afternoon we started on the grass & usually winded up at someones house until maybe 9PM or 10 PM, etc. We would just keep smoking grass & keep opening up new bottles of southern comfort. On the weekends we used to take Acid & Magic Mushrooms and stay up all night. We had good music back then. Alot of what we listened to was 1960's music. We used to listen to : The Allman Brothers Band, The Outlaws, Cream, Deep Purple, Rare Earth, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, Grand Funk Railroad, Neil Young w/Crazy Horse. Anytime some of us wanted to sleep over someones house, it usually wasn't too difficult. Alot of times the parents never even realized we were there if we stayed upstairs. About clothing : Every one of us Stoners, both male & female, had very long hair down past the shoulders. We all wore blue jeans & jean jackets>>either Levi's or Lee or Wrangler. And we always wore a cotton flannel shirt underneath the jean jacket in cold weather. And a bandanna or leather hat. We all had like 20 or 30 different concert t-shirts. Dating was very relaxed among us stoners in the 1970's. The girls would break up with their boyfriends every week & then date someone else & then next week break up again and go back to the first boyfriend, etc. etc. etc. No big deal. No one was serious. Very relaxed. A few people found Lasting Love, but for most of us, it was very relaxed & very open. No big deal. Our main primary focus was getting high. You gotta live for today. Because>>> tomorrow may never come.

If you could sum up 90s fashion and style in one sentence or paragraph what would you?

I was a young child in the 90s, turning 13 in 1996 and felt the fashion and style seemed to be a mixed bag. It's like you have grunge, gansta, and punk stuff on one end, and naughty prep/school girl outfits on another end, and some retro 70s/new millennium styles in 1998/1999.

Answer
Anything goes.

Think about it---

On one hand you had grunge--Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, flannels, combat boots, babydoll dresses etc.

Then on the other hand it was also the golden age of designer fashion-- Tom Ford at Gucci, Versace, Gautier, etc.

And then in between you had the movie Clueless, bad raver fashion (plastic miniskirts, alien t-shirts, giant platform shoes, white fishnets...) and lots of cheesy, wannabe "retro"clothes from every decade from the 50's to the 70's.
