I'm looking for an eagle project, and i want it to be away from the usual. I don't want it to be planting a flower garden, painting a wall, building a fence, etc. Does anybody have any ideas that are unique? Please share your experiences of eagle projects you've participated in or have seen or observed. Thank you.

What are some basic items for summer/2010/2011 school year?

Angie Fore

I want to look unique but well put together. I'm going to high school this year and I want to go outside my comfort zone.
I dress in skinny jeans and tees but I want some dresses and girlie stuff.
Also should I wear heels?

Answer
well i dont reccomend heels, personally,
i know the kids at my school are always like, "why are you wearing heels, lalalalala??" i get so annoyed i just dont wear them, but feel free to
it depends though, my campus is very spread out. theres over 10 buildings, none of which the numbers coorespond

(1 will be in the front of the school, while 10 is completely diagonally across, with the gym to navigate around. its horribly spaced out)

if its spaced out a lot i dont reccomend it simply because of hurrying up stairs and across the campus to get to class in five minutes(me and my friends had to literally power walk/jog basically every day to get from first to second hour, and we always were at least 15 seconds late despite our best efforts)

right now though id reccomend....
1. maybe a blazer to wear over spagetti strap tanktops and stuff
h&m has good ones, and the miley cyrus/max azria line from walmart has a black one thats more of a t-shirt material. i bought one the other day and that was 14$

2. a fake leather jacket of some sort. you can push the sleeves up too since its not too heavy, and i bought a really cute brown one from h&m two days ago for 49 dollars.
h&m has the style i bought in brown, a very light grey, and black

3. boots. i just love boots personally. i have these in both black and brown and they're really cute on.

http://www.wetseal.com/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=109&subCategoryId=206&productId=30983

4. use over sized purses as your backpack, if you're worried about size you can switch binders to folders for most classes, since a lot of times in highschool teachers tell you that you will need a 2 inch binder, and you only ever keep old graded papers in it (wait a month or so first though to see if you'll need a binder or not for each class)
i reccomend one in black or brown if you want it to match the majority of your wardrobe

fimo modelling clay?

kids backpacks for school personalized

kids backpacks for school personalized image

Yanika B

hey i was trying to personalize my school stuff for next year..

Can i put pens and pencils in the oven when covered in fimo or will they melt?

Any ideas of how can i personalize these things ?

thanks for helping im sooo freeaking bored and need ideas thanks

Answer
You can "cover" various plastics with polymer clay then cure them in a home oven, but some plastics will shrink or distort. The pens that work best for covering with clay are the plain white Bic Round Stics (not the clear Bics!)... they are the right kind of plastic to stand up to the temps required to cure polymer clays, and they're also completely cylindrical (not tapered) so they're just easier to do.
There's loads of info on covering pens with polymer clay on this page of my polymer clay "encyclopedia" website:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/pens.htm

Items made from other materials can be covered with polymer clay (and baked with it) too --materials like glass, metal, wood, stone, etc.
Check this page for more on how to cover those materials, and what some of the possible items to cover would be:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/covering.htm

Other ways to personalize school items might be to make decorative things to put onto your notebooks --those could be small clay items (created by hand or from all kinds of molds--even molds you make yourself from clay-- or stamped clay items, etc.), decorative clay sheets, clay cutout shapes, or they could even be whole covers for the notebooks).
Or you could put various things inside your locker (make clay items into magnets, or make a frame around a mirror you stick to the door, for example).
Or make pulls or buttons for your backpack.
Or make bookmarks.

Check out some of these pages for lessons and examples of all those things. Rather than give a direct link for each page though, I'll just have you go to the "Table of Contents" page for the whole site:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/contents.htm
then click on each of the following page names from inside the alphabetical navigation bar on the left:

Kids & Beginners > Cutouts...and Stamping-Molds
Miniatures
Books--Mini,Covers > Covers
Cards, Postcards > Bookmarks
Frames & Mirrors
Beads > Misc. Uses for Beads (zipper pulls, etc.)
Buttons
Sheets of Pattern
Other Materials > Magnets

P.S. It's good not to refer to FimoClassic or FimoSoft (or any particular brand of polymer clay) as "modeling clay" since the types of clay that are most often called that can't be put in the oven (they'll melt) and will never harden.
"Air-dry" clays are different from either of those, but they won't stay soft in the air (they'll dry and harden). You could experiment with those too, but they'll need to be sealed after drying and they can shrink while drying (clays like Makins or Hearty, or Creative Paperclay, for example).

HTH, and have fun!
(you'll never be bored with polymer clay--there are so many different ways to go with it that you'll never get through them all, much less really explore them all!)

Who's bought this backpack?

Apple

http://www.ebags.com/products/view/ZoomColorsViews.cfm?fuseaction=imagePop&ModelID=1&sub_site_id=20&productid=1161995

I just want to know how many people have already bought the DRAGONFLY BLUE Jansport backpack for school this year. If a lot of people bought it, I think I might choose a different one, so that I'm not carrying the same backpack 10 other people are carrying.

So, if you already bought this backpack please say so! =D

(Sorry if you've already answered this before, but the other one got messed up =P)

Answer
ive seen a lot of kids use that backpack. its a jansport, no matter what color you get it in, at least 5 other kids are going to have it :)

If you really like it and it matches with your closet go for it :) you can personalize it with charms and iron ons later on.

How can I make my school uniform look indie/vintage?

school bags london
on back to school makeup tutorial drugstore edition back to school makeup ...
school bags london image

Ghibli Dor

Hello!
So I go to a secondary school in London, and I'm 15. My school uniform consists of a grey skirt, black tights/socks, black shoes, white shirt, black jumper, black blazer and a purple tie.

I already have black brogues, wear one ring (which is from India) every day and have two lobe piercings on each ear. I have long, brown, curly hair, and my everyday makeup is winged eyeliner and nothing else.

My school have just told me to get rid of my bag as it is not black. I prefer backpacks as I have to walk to and from school everyday and they are more comfy. If you have any links to vintage-looking relatively cheap black backpacks, I will be extremely grateful :)

So basically what I'm asking is how can I look more indie/vintage with a school uniform? Like ideas for different accessories and how to have my hair and whatnot. I'm not saying I will completely follow everything you suggest because I'm not that kind of person, I'm just looking for ideas. Any links to pictures/items for inspiration would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your time :)
I'm not asking this because I'm a wannabe indie kid or something and I want to fit into a crowd, I would just like to have a bit of an individual style, as everyone is forced to pretty much look the same at my school, haha.

Answer
Hi!!!
Well, for inspiration i will put a link to Blair from gossip girl here>>>> http://www.collegefashion.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/blair-waldorf-tailored.jpg

Anyway, if you want a vintage look, buy a long dangling locket/clock necklace. If the eiffel tower is on it, bonus points. Also, the eyeliner is a great start! If you're bold, (and have felxible parents) do a bright red lip. Try NYC in Retro Red, I know you can get it in the states at any drugstore (cvs rite aid walgreens etc). Not sure about london. its 99 cents tho. If your parents are not for it, try the Burts Bees Lip Shimmer in Cherry. It is red, but more sheer to give the illusion of a redder lip but still appear natural.

Also, try the classic vintage RED COAT. Here's a pic... https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=915J2D0wOuq4XM&tbnid=JyAigxnF_ojj7M:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebudgetbabe.com%2Farchives%2F401-Beat-the-Cold-War-in-a-Red-Coat.html&ei=qKtcUa3tLfLK4APAzoDACg&bvm=bv.44697112,d.dmg&psig=AFQjCNEltZimLzmxkgdc4Mqzagmzhg9EBA&ust=1365114137082272

Backpacks!!!! Try these from jansport, some are a stretch as far as 'black'

http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=2001&pid=TDN7E

Look at the different colors

Does anyone have any cute oufit ideas for high school?

KaiKai

I am a sophmore in high school and I really need some outfit and shoe ideas for school. I don't like clothes that are really preppy, maybe an outfit that would go great with converse. Also, my school dresscode won't allow jeans that are torn or have holes in them, and all shirts must cover my shoulders.

Answer
Hello from London!

I would go with a pair of cute skinnies in any colour other than black/blue. Maybe a beige or a sky blue material, pale pink or burgundy if your feeling daring with a floaty white/cream cotton boho gypsy top...square or scoop neck with floaty shortish sleeves. Leave hair down and natural with a soft plete in a sort of "hairband" style from ear to ear but mess it up. Never to done remember! Finish of with cute vintage satchel or drawstring bag!

Hope this helps! Jamie X

Schools in Korea questions?

best school bags for kids philippines
on Talking Angela Free Download For Computer
best school bags for kids philippines image

Seung Gi

These are my questions:

1. I am not Korean and I am planning to study in Korea, is it hard to adjust?
2. Is that true that private schools in Korea are strict and most of the students stay at school until 11 PM?
3. I am 14 years old and turning 15 on October, what grade will I be in?
4. How many subjects do schools in Korea have and what are they?
5. Do schools in Korea have education about religions? I am Born-Again Christian.
6. When do school year start and end? June until March or August/September until May/June?
7. If Korea is known to be good in Science, Math and Reading, why most of the Koreans prefer to study in the Philippines? I've seen A LOT back then in the PH. Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!

And lastly.... Do you think I should pursue the plan of studying in Korea instead of studying in USA?

Please answer my questions.
PS: I don't know how to speak Korean! I don't understand Hangul, too. I am Filipino-Chinese. I am fluent in Filipino and English.

Answer
I don't want to sound discouraging or anything, but all I'll say will be the truth.

1. It will be possibly the hardest thing you will ever do. People complain about some material that is hard at school already, now try learning it in a language that is in no way similar to yours. A dictionary will have to follow you everywhere you go and scientific terms, higher level vocab will usually not show up. Concepts and formulas will also have to be understood in a language you do not speak. Try learning calculus (diffrential and integral), biology, organic chemistry, etc in a language you confess you do not know (watching some TV will not be enough...)

2. Korean students will go to ordinary school (typically around 7) to around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. They will go to various private academies (hagwons) afterwards, so you will be out of the house until around midnight. Kids often leave their house in the morning with breakfast in their mouth and lunch+dinner in their bags. Since you are paying to go to the private academies, you will be pressured from home to do well. Private schools are not very big in Korea, however private academies are and they are everywhere.

3. You'd be in the 8th or 9th grade (remember you'd be adding another year to your life b/c the Korean age system is different). However, I'd highly advise you to drop down a grade or so b/c unless you are Einstein's successor, you will not pass. Korean students do this when they go to the States b/c they cannot manage a workload in a language they don't know even though it is easier material.

4. It would depend on the school. Math, English, Chinese, Science, Korean, and History would all be subjects in school.

5. Schools will typically not have classes about theology or religion. That will have to be done by you on your own time, but there may be exceptions.

6. The Korean education calendar is a bit different from what you might be used to. School would start in the summer until December where students will have a 2 month break (December and January). When they come back, they will go to school until July or June where they would have another month off. So there is a 2 month winter break and a 1 month summer break in the school year from the summer until the summer. Exact months and days will vary.

7. Korea is known to be one the top countries in education by numerous international studies. Koreans do not move to Korea for math or science. They would typically study in the Philippines for the English education that is available there at a much lower cost. The warmer climate is also attractive and the Filipino government encourages immigrants from Korea for economic reasons.

8. If you know English fluently, then I highly advise you to study in the US. It will be much easier for you to do so. To be honest, you always hear from Korean immigrants talking about how much easier school in the States is compared to Korea. I have cousins that are three years younger than me and are in Korea who do subject material that is only a year behind me (I live in the States). The only time they're at home during school weeks are for sleep except for maybe 2 or 3 hours. And this will be months on end. You will essentially be going to school on the weekends as well through the private academies (they will basically last just as long). Also, this will sound absurd, you will attend these private academies over the breaks as well. Of course, since these are private academies, it's completely up to you on whether to attend them or not, however I can nearly guarantee you that you'll fall behind if you don't.

Good luck to you and I'm sorry if I sounded excessively pessimisstic, but this is based on my own experience and from what I hear all the time. If you study in the US for highschool, you may be able to attend a semester or two of college in Korea; however, with what you've told me so far, it will be very difficult for you to succeed in school in Korea (unless you are a frickin genius of course :P)

I need help for the first day of school!?

thebigfish

i just moved in to US this june and i'm going to school at september , im from Philippines which is alot different from here . Also, im going to school as a sophomore, so please, can i have any tips on what should i wear? or what bag should i get? what clubs to join? or what should i do to prevent myself from having a bad time for highschool . thank you :D
also , im 15 and im a guy .

Answer
Be yourself! Don't try to be a clone of all the other kids. After the first day, you'll see what the others are wearing and then you can dress in a similar style, but still maintain your individuality.

Relax and be friendly - the second day will be better!

How can I personalize school supplies for school?

Cowgirl389

I think it would be fun to go to school with pencils and notebooks that have something on them that I am interested in, but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them! How can I put pictures/logos, etc onto pencils or notebooks? I also just think it would be fun to personalize them if I want to take an afternoon and relax and do something semi-crafty... Thanks in advance!

Answer
Paint on them with acrylic paints (the pencils- buy the yellow ones at Walmart or other discount store or look for other light colors at office supply stores like Staples, Office Depot) or the Dollar stores. Before youstart painting, make your self a "cradle" for your pencil with two clothes pins or clips. Place one end of pencil in each of clips, and stand clips up so pencil is held off the table and the paint is not going all over the table. Use wax or freezer paper or a cut up paper bag on table to protect it from paint.

I often find packages of several with different holiday themes on them the day AFTER the holiday for about 75% off for 20 or so pencils (like just after Halloween, I got a package with cute pictures on them for $1.25 at Target) also check Walgreens and CVS pharmacies in their school supplies and check the Sunday paper for coupons - I frequently get 8 for $1.00 in a holiday or special theme with the coupons. I teach school and give them out for rewards...If you paint something , try polka dots first, that is really fun...one color or several different ones. That is something I never see in decorated pencils or notebooks... If you want to decorate the notebooks easily - get some colored stick on 'dots" at the office supply - they are cheap and come in all colors and go fast. You could then draw something on the larger "dots" ...

something else re your notebooks - use permanent colored markers on light color paper notebook covers. draw your picture with a pencil - very lightly, then color in with markers if you like, then go around edges of each picture with black marker - cool look.I say "permanent' because the washable ones rub off the slick surface of the notebook cover (guess how I found that out?) let dry a few days before taking to school.
Note: copying anime or manga or any other cartoon or comics characters is NOT original art - everyone all over the world is doing it, so if you truly want to be original come up with something of YOUR OWN! Otherwise you may as well just buy some cartoon stickers and stick them on (yawn)

Where can I get a bag like the one Indiana Jones has?

Q. Hey I'm a guy and a few of my friends at my school have bags that are basically in the same fashion as Indiana Jones where it hangs from one shoulder and crosses over to the opposite hip, except these are more school-equipped... as in made of cloth instead of leather and have more space. They are also more horizontally shaped instead of vertically. I can't seem to find these. Whenever I search cloth satchel all I get is purses... can someone please help?

Answer
Those are messenger bags. I get mine at Spencer's and hot topic. They usually have something on them like a band name or artist on them. You can also get them at Walmart. Target.

What should I expect to happen during my freshman year?

best backpacks kids today show image

I'm just curious as to what will be going on. Will the classes be hard? Is it scary transitioning from a middle school to a high school? Might I add, my high school has a separate building for all the freshman... There are 1200 kids in 9th grade alone. It's crazy. :o
Should I take my backpack the first day?

Answer
ha im starting in 4 days now, so here are some tips!!!

BEING PREPARED:

k so today we had a freshman orientation so they gave is this boring but helpful lecture and we got to tour the school and try to find our classes

if your highschool doesnt offer a program like that, see if you can just come on your own and walk through the halls and find your classrooms

get organized!!! if they didnt give you a supply list (our school doesnt give them out) then you probably find out what you need for class on your first day. but get the basics; pens pencils and notebooks. so the first day bring a notebook and the teachers are gonna tell you exactly what you need for class. also, figure out how to stay organized because the teachers arent going to baby you and tell you to get binders and folders etc. (unless you absolutely need them for the class). so find out what works best for you. in my highschool and in most highschools, you have to carry around a tote (because there wont be time to go back to your locker each period) or a backpack, whatever works best for you. and they usually give out books and stuff on the first day or throughout the first week, so its good to have something to put the books in when you have a 4 minute passing period and you dont have time to go to your locker all the time....

SOCIALIZING:
find out if you have any classes with your friends, and if you dont then just have a positive attitude! first impressions tend to stick, so wear something nicer, have a positive (but not overly hyper, immature) attitude because if you smile and look approachable then people will want to get to know you, but if you're overly excited and hyper, you might come off as immature or annoying...approach people and be approachable! smile! even if you're painfully shy (like me) dont be afraid to approach people they dont bite!! and remember, you're mixed in with people from other schools so they dont know who you are, so you can start fresh and have whatever reputation you want to have. and have a good sense of humor, because people like to laugh =) break out of your shell because no one has to know that you're shy or you have an...interesting... past haha well whatever the case may be because they dont know you and they might judge you at first but change their opinions once they get to know you. oh and try to make some friends with upperclassmen so they can give you advice and be nice or at least respectful to the teachers!

APPEARANCE:
you might want to dress nicer ( you dont have to go super-prep or anything) and its okay to let loose and show up in sweats every once in a while. just make sure to keep your personal sense of style (im both preppy and sporty, so i usually wear a hollister/abercrombie shirt with basketball shorts, or sometimes i just let loose and wear a sweatshirt or a loose t-shirt some days)

if you wear make up, DO NOT OVERDO IT!!! i do wear make up, but its just eyeliner and a teeny bit of mascara (i basically wipe the brush clean of the gunky black stuff before i apply) and cover up where i need it. you dont need foundation and eye shadow and lipstick!!! in 8th grade some girls wore eyeshadow and it just looked stupid cuz they were still young! and it makes you seem/look kinda fake (people that dont know you are going to judge you by looks) and dont wear like heels and stuff, just gym shoes or flip flops or birkenstocks (which i personally dont wear) are fine. just make sure you look good, but dont make it your number one priority. and guys dont like girls with a ton of make up on anyway....

ACADEMICS:
do well in school!!! education should be your number one priority! highschool is kind of faster paced, so dont be afraid to ask questions or ask for extra help, because then you'll just be more behind. your GPA is important for college!! get to know your teachers and figure out what study ways are good for you (such as study groups, a quiet environment, etc.) and ABSOLUTELY NEVER PROCRASTINATE!!! if you get homework on monday and its due on thursday, get it done earlier in the week so you dont have to worry about it the night before! and try to get work done before hanging out with friends, or if you do hang out with them right after school, see if you can hang out at someones house and do homework and then do the fun stuff you usually do. highschool can be one of the best experiences in your life, just as long as you stay on top of everything and dont let it completely overwhelm you (kinda hard not to let that happen when you're stressing and drowning in piles of homework) and make sure to join some kind of club/sport because then you can be admired for your talents, and you can always meet new friends there!

alright thats all the advice i can think of right now, hope i helped!!

oh and if you have any older brothers or sisters (sadly im the oldest) or if your friends have older siblings that have been to highschool, ask them!!! that way you'll know what to expect! (it helped me feel kinda calmer about going to school, cuz i now know what to expect)

depending on the classes you're taking (im in all honors) you might have a LOT of homework or a manageable amount. they dont usually pile 4 hours o

What are these parents thinking? I saw something today that shocked me, maybe I tend to think the worst ?

Sunny

Today on the back of a car, I saw that on the spare tire cover the car owner had an enlarged photo of three children printed on it. I'm assuming it was a photo of their kids. The first thought that ran through my head was "Way to get your kids targeted for abduction". Are parents who do this not thinking? Would you, as a parent, do this? Or am I just a worry wart?

Answer
I agree with you. And honestly, no one cares to look at a picture of their kids anyway, not unless they are a child sex predator.
I was molested for 12 years in my own home. Which goes to show that parents need to pay far more attention to detail.
This is a worse idea that printing their names on the outside of their jackets or backpacks, which experts are strongly against doing.
You don't think too much, they think too little.

How to sell Duct Tape things?

I see these things sold a lot online, but I want to sell them at school. I make flowers, wallets and bracelets, but I'm afraid no one would want them. How would I get people buy my products? How much should I sell them for? I don't want the price so high that no one wold buy them or so low that I make no profit.
BQ: What pther things could I make (could be made out of anything, not just duct tape) that I could sell easily?

Answer
Wear a red flower to school and throughout the day wear another one that is a different color. Ask your friends to wear the things you make and let them keep it for helping you. The charge for items has been made by fellow crafters to charge only for the amount of money you spent making the item and multiply it by three. No charge for the time it took to make it. I am including a list of things you can make. Also if you have the inclination to make something spectacular raffle it off. But before you start anything get an ok in writing from the school principal. Try to find the craft that you would use flour and water and shape it into thing, flowers, the things you would put on your table as a decoration for the holidays, Also friendship bracelets

It's definitely from Urban Outfitter's, I saw it on their site for a long time.

What do you think about the outfit I wore to school today?

quicksilver school bags for girls

quicksilver school bags for girls image

Dominic

I have on tan Abercrombie cargo shorts, a black GAP polo shirt and black with a white design Quick Silver flip flops. a kid said I looked "gay" today in the hall at school. I didnt know anyone could look "gay" without maybe being "gay" and Im not.
Cowboy: they are mens flip flops made by Quick Silver and a popular brand for skaters and surfers to wear.

Answer
That does sound like an outfit that makes you look like a homosexual. You dressed like a preppy white boy. I would advise looking at all groups of kids and learning how to dress a little cooler than that or dress in a more adult way. That outfit would make you look really gay.

Here is what I would do: Lose the polo shirt that is trademark preppy douche bag. Stick to a v neck shirt (those are cooler). What type of V neck? Solid black and white or a v neck with short sleeves that's made out of a thin light material with stripes. Purple or grey are great for this. Also own at least one white collared shirt like this: http://www.collegefashion.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/white-button-down.jpg

The pants: shorts are okay but not cargo. Those are really really stupid looking. Stick to more athletic ones generally. They look nicer and more teenage in terms of the style. I see elementary students wearing cargo shorts. Older people that wear them are generally nerds or dorks. Try sticking to longer pants like jeans (blue or black). Just avoid skinny jeans those are not considered straight by most girls and most guys think they are VERY gay.

Flip Flops? No freaking way. get real shoes. Tennis shoes etc. One pair of nicer shoes and finally one pair of flip flops but you wear those when you go to the beach etc. Flip flops are terrible walking around shoes. Especially quicksilver. Those are very very gay. Try shoes like these:

http://cdn100.iofferphoto.com/img3/item/508/087/848/christian-louboutins-mens-louis-flat-calf-spikes-shoes-2559.jpg

http://www.powerseller-union.com/images/supra-mens.com/Supra%20Skytop/Mens%20Supra%20Skytop%20Shoes%20Cool22.jpg

http://www.hanepolos.com/images/3_Accessories/polow1201021111599999979963.jpg

Shoes shouldn't cost you more than 40 dollars for a very nice pair. I listed off some cool ones to give you an idea. It doesn't mean I would wear these.
------
Finally use colors that go with everything. White and black should be base colors. Blue, purple and grey are more specific. They do work with a lot of things also but it must be the right shade.
------------

These tips only work for people from ages 10 to 23 generally. After that you need to change up how you dress. Also these are tips and you don't have to follow them. However, I went to an art school (not for college of course, art is a dumb major to get I like engineering) and I know people that designed outfits etc. I also go to Miami and New York regularly so I know what is popular for the most part in terms of style and electronics.

Is it reasonable for bus commuters to place their shopping bags on adjacent seats?

school bags in singapore

school bags in singapore image

Dolphin-Bi

..in crowded buses and depriving others, esp elders, of a seat? There have been cases of stubborn commuters refusing to place bags on the floor, and bus captains having to stop the bus to sort out the problems. Should there be better regulations to prevent such incidents before violence happens?

BA to the one with a good idea!

Answer
Frankly I find it totally selfish. It doesn't matter whether there are elderly or young people around, the seat is for people not shopping bags.

It's difficult to regulate this behaviour. Although a monetary penalty usually works, perhaps education on being courteous commuters would teach people to respect each other rather than the fear of losing some money. Within Singapore this would require a generational change in social graces and as such I believe it should be taught to children from the time they begin schooling.

Many people do sell lots of miscellaneous items (branded bags, branded watches, cheap clothing from China/Vietnam, etc) without licenses. They may sell such items through schools, on internet or some other means like through friends and colleagues.

ideas on how to make a sewing class FUN?

T

Ideas on how to make a sewing class FUN?
I teach students 3rd through 5th grade how to sew and I want to make our hour in class fun for them while they learn. Any ideas?

Answer
Keep the projects quick and easy and colourful. Kids that age like things they can use and don't have patience for projects that take too many sessions to complete. Doing smaller items that are finished quickly builds confidence and it's easy to build up on successes with slightly more complex projects. A little drawstring bag made of quilting cotton for shoes or gym clothes is always a favourite when I teach little kids. I always allow the kids some freedom in picking the colour of fabric, as long a it's quilting cotton. Quilting cotton is easy to cut and sew and an excellent choice for kids because of the endless variety of colours and prints. A simple pencil bag is also a favourite. Simple pillows are also good. For the older kids a pair of pyjama bottoms from cotton flannelette can be a final project worth trying. For the younger ones a backpack or school bag works well. Don't fall for the allure of furry stuffed animals, the fur is difficult to sew for beginners and it can be be more frustrating than fun. Another project to avoid is an an old fashioned apron. Little boys will be lost because they don't relate to the item, and some little girls will rebel against such an old fashioned and slightly sexist project. (Trust me, I've been teaching kids for a while.) It may be traditional, but it's not the best idea. If you can convince the kids that they can make useful and good looking things themselves, they should become interested on their own. Kids love to be able to express themselves and show off what they have made, and sewing allows plenty of room for both.

I teach through a fabric store and part of the deal is that the kids buy patterns from the store. I recommend the Kwik Sew Learn to sew line. The first projects are quite simple, they even have a couple no-sew projects to teach basic cutting and laying out. Here's the page with all the beginner projects You can get a couple ideas of what type of things beginners can make: http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/cat_thumbs.cfm?Cat=Learn_to_Sew&Level=KWIK_Start&QL=KwikStart I start the kids with number 3525. The pattern 3595 is the pyjama pattern I use. If you do a search through about.com's sewing site there are a few similar free patterns you can use: http://sewing.about.com/

In conclusion, keep it simple, keep it colourful, and allow some creative freedom.

My friend is a target at school?

My parents moved and we ended up in a new city with a new High School. First day I met a really nice guy, and we became friends. But as soon as I started hanging out with him, I noticed things.
Students would bang on the windows when we were in the library, daring him to come out, several of them threating to attack him.

People throw things at him, and if he ever puts his school bag down kids grab it and hide it, or place it the rubbish bins. Iâve seen him take his bag out of the rubbish bin so many times it almost seems normal. We were talking to math once and a huge guy walked in front of us and just slammed into him a wall while his friends stood and laughed.

Iâve been targeted as well but not as much, just small things like throwing paper at the back of my head in class, locking me out of classes when the teachers leave the room and just the usual name talking, like deeming me crazy and whispering about me. But I donât get nearly as much as he does, and thatâs just for being his friend.

I didnât make any sense. He was nice, good looking and smart, a little bitter at times. I asked time what he thought the bullying was about and he put bluntly he thought most of it was just racism. I never have really thought of it that way before.
Sanjay âs parents are from India and came here when his mother was just a few months pregnant with him. Sure, both his parents were born outside of the country but my friend grew up in the same area all of the people in the school did. So I started looking around, nearly all students in this school are white, but surely in a Western modern school racism would not go that far?
So I watched more closely, listened to what people say. They refer to him as a dirty Mexican⦠which is stupid because his parents are Indian and none of his family have been to Mexico.
We can tried telling teachers but because itâs just us against what seems like the majority we are always made up as the bad guys, they make stuff up.

Iâve tried to help him but heâs just quit caring, and I think he may be really depressed. Iâm worried suicide might be on the cards, and as his best friend I donât know what to do. What can I do?
I donât get this racism, why? What can I do?

Answer
This school of yours doesnt happen to be in Australia right? Indians are KILLED almost everyday there, its always on the paper, India student found dead, classmates found guilty! and such stuffs all the time, in Australia i mean. Anywhere it be, i cant believe they still hold on the racism cr*p...A-holes should just roll over and die.... There isn't much you can do actually, if this racism things ends somehow, it can only be by the whole schools support, which am sure wont happen any time soon

This bags zippern has always been a little hard to open and closen because of the metal zipper. I really like this bag though, any ideas on how to fix this zipper? Picture below...

Answer
I'm no expert, but I would lower the handle part as low as possible, then enter the other side the same way as if I were starting my jacket zipper. Once I got it started, I would install a safety pin at the bottom to prevent the separation from happening again.

how to fix book bag zipper?

Joshua

I just bought a new book bag. When I zip it up the zipper wont close. How do I fix this.Oh and if it matters I start school 8/24/10.

Answer
If you just bought it return it for one that works properly. Fixing a zipper is tough and usually can only be done on higher quality/heavy duty zippers, which most likely isn't the case on a bookbag. We sell bookbags and often the zippers are defective or hard to close when they come from the factory, and they only get worse over time.

When I go to school my hair is brushed I've taken a shower and I smell nice. But just after 1 class I can look around and everyone else looks like they just came to school but I have tangly hair and I get quarter-sized sweat stains under my armpits, and I feel like I smell bad (but i dont know bcuz you cant smell yourself haha). How do you do it? It looks like you just got ready ALL the time! What do you bring?

Answer
I have the same problems. Everyone always looks so good at the end of the day! Not me. :( But I've been figuring out how to conquer beauty emergencies at school!

First. Bring deoderant!! And a sweatshirt, incase you need to cover up your shirt!
Bring a little bottle of yummy perfume, and spritz some on every other hour, or whenever you feel the need for a burst of deliciousness. Don't put it on too often, boys get really pissed if you do, LOL!
bring some concealer for zits and coldsores that seem to come out of no where!
Bring chapstick
Bring lipgloss- it freshens up your whole face with one swipe!
Bring lotion, for two reasons: one, it makes your hands soft and smells good, and too, if you rub a little into your hair it softens and defrizzes. It's good for your hair, too! :D

Put all of this stuff in a makeup bag, and tuck it in your backpack. Don't forget a hendheld mirror to do all this stuff! Then you are ready to conquer whatever the day brings.

Good luck!

How long does an insulated bag work for?

~ <3 ~

I'm going to be at college for 12hrs, plus another 2hrs driving time.

If I were to keep some food in an insulated bag, APPROXIMATELY (to your best knowledge) how many hours max would it stay fresh for if:

-the food was reallly hot or frozen?
-it was just sorta cold?

Thanks.

Answer
I found this for you. Hope it helps!

Lunch Bags & Boxes
The first thing you will need is a container in which to pack the lunch. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money. For adults a small cooler makes a great lunch box. Fred uses a medium sized cooler. He is usually gone for 24 to 48 hours, so he needs alot of food to keep him going. For children and teenagers, you can usually find inexpensive lunch boxes and insulated lunch bags at yard sales and thrift stores.

Small children often prefer a plastic lunch box with cartoon characters on the side. I suggest you buy these as cheaply as possible. They only last for a year or two before the children drop them or the latch breaks. At $6 to $10 a piece, buying brand new boxes has never been a good investment for me. I have purchased them new when I desperately needed the thermoses that came with them. After the plastic lunch box broke, I purchased replacements from my local Goodwill. I continue to use the same thermos year after year.

If the art work on an older lunch box is shabby, you can easily replace it. Use rubber cement to glue down a new picture (cut to size) and then cover the picture with clear contact paper. I've done this, and it lasted almost 2 years, until the lunch box cracked and became unusable. Amy D. describes the process in detail in the first book of The Tightwad Gazette.

For older children insulated lunch bags work best. They don't have the juvenile connotations of plastic boxes with matching thermoses, so older kids usually don't object to carrying them. I like them because they don't break when they get drop-kicked across the livingroom by a budding football player. Since they have soft sides, it is easier to fit more food and odd-shaped containers in them too. They usually have zipper closing and shoulder straps for carrying them. I buy the largest ones I can find because I find them easier to fill. Many modern insulated bags have several extra zipper pockets and sections on the outside to carry little extras like napkins, spoons and salt or pepper packets. My boys like these but they aren't really necessary. Purchased brand-new, insulated lunch bags cost between $5 and $15. If you wait until back-to-school-sales you may find them cheaper. Over the summer they can often be found at yard sales. Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

I am going to high school in 2 days, and I STILL don't have a backpack. I really don't know what to get. What is a good color, or design? Is purple plaid too middle school?? Or should I just stick with my bag/large purse? It's dark blue. Please give me some tips!!
Oh, and are totes more common in high school than backpacks? If I do use a backpack, what is the most common color for a girl?

Like the red one but as a tote instead of an actual bookbag

Where can I find the best netbook for school?

injuried

I want to get a netbook that is useful in a school setting. I want to mostly be able to browse the web, be light to carry in a school bag and have access to wireless most of the time. Can a net book also be used to write word document as well?

Answer
The netbook is a modern curiosity, a new class of notebook barely a year old and still going through its growing pains as manufacturers try to balance their designs properly. A netbook is characterized by low-end, power-efficient hardware, an exceptionally small and light chassis with a screen size topping out at around ten inches, and just enough horsepower for word processing and Internet usage. By paring down features and performance, manufacturers have been able to produce these small computers cheaply, pricing them well below their ultraportable forebears like Sony's T series. In fact, netbooks often cost less than full-sized "budget" notebooks. It's this blend of form, function, and value that has made netbooks so popular.

The functionality and practicality of modern netbooks like Asus' seminal and ultimately class-defining Eee PC makes them attractive options in this back-to-school season. As a college student at UC San Diego, I've seen students carrying around notebooks of all sizes, including one person struggling to fit a massive Alienware notebook onto a tiny lecture hall desk. Students need computers for school, of course, and a portable machine that can be brought to class is extremely useful. But students also don't tend to have a lot of money, and as a result, they often settle for seven- or eight-pound laptops. With the advent of the netbook, however, a student's load can easily and cheaply be lightened. Using an inexpensive netbook for class and a more powerful desktop at homeâeven a small-form-factor machine in a dorm roomâsuddenly becomes both a practical and viable option, especially when you consider that many netbooks manage at least three hours of battery life, which is exactly the length of a single, long lecture.

Of course, the runaway success of the Eee PC has led to a flood of new models from players both large and small. Here, big boys like HP, Dell, and Lenovo pit their wares against smaller players like Everex, MSI, and Gigabyte. The number of netbook flavors available is simply staggering, and although the underlying hardware of many of these units is similar, key differences distinguish each one from its peers. We've summed up those differences in a comprehensive guide to the netbook market, complete with our recommendations based on hands-on experience with the models you can buy today.

The common netbook platform
Early entries into the netbook market had to make do with underclocked Celeron M processors and the occasional Via C7-M, with the vast majority of manufacturers biding their time until Intel released its Atom processor. The Atom was designed to offer the bare minimum of performance in a small, power-efficient package that's cheap to produce. The result, at least so far, is the Atom N270, a 1.6GHz chip with a maximum TDP (thermal design power) of just 2.5 watts. This chip generates so little heat that it can operate without a fan. And the Atom is cheap, too, or at least cheap enough for Intel to sell it mounted on a Mini-ITX motherboard for less than $70.
