Ryan

Im a 14 year old male and i have to walk home usually on Tuesdays and Thursday from my school which is 1.5 miles away from my house. And i was just wondering could this effect me growing anymore because im only about 5' 4' and the other kids in my class are about 5' 9" or so. Also none of them have to walk home or that far so could that be why i'm so much smaller?

Answer
Hi,

Yes, carrying heavy bags to school on a regular basis could be the reason for your reduced growth.
It could also just be natural, Im male and when I was 14 I was 5,2, but in 1 year I grew to 5,6, and kept going :D.

There are also other permanent problems you are risking by carying the bag that may serously effect you later in your life. These include nervous, and muscular trauma.

I would recommend, that you get a bag with wheels on the bottom that you can pull, or find place to leave your books in school.

Hope this Helps

John

When did kids start taking rolling suitcases to school?

icecold

Answer
When we decided to do something about the threat of Scoliosis ( I think that's how it is spelled.) I myself take a rolling backpack to school and I assure you it is much better for your back than lugging around a ton of textbooks with a traditional backpack. In case you aren't aware, scoliosis is when the vertebrae becomes crooked because of extended periods of uneven weight distribution. Since back packs are hardly centered scoliosis can show up when the child becomes older.

And they aren't really rolling suitcases, they are just backpacks with wheels and a plastic frame.

I hope I answered your question!

unknown

Hi guys,
I'm in search for a new school bag, i want either a big/oversized side bag (duffel, tote whatever as long as it fits my books!) or a really nice backpack kind of school bag.

So anyone know where i can get one for $80 and under in Sydney? :)
Or any brands?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
City Beach stores. They sell surf brands such as Billabong, Roxy, Quiksilver, etc.

If you're in Sydney, there are stores in Burwood, Hurstville and Parramatta. Or check out their website for other locations:

I just got my very first period. I go to a very small (70-90 kids in whole middl school)Catholic middle school, we wear uniforms and we are only allowed to go to our lockers in the morning, at lunch, and at the end of the day. I wear pads, how can I hide them during the day? I am the first of my friends to get my period so far, so I can't really just keep pads in my pencil ace. And also, we can not carry bags around with us, just books. And tips or ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Answer
I'm so sorry. I would try to keep them in my pocket if they were small enough. Continue to keep them in your pencil caddy. If you have the stretchy book covers, try that lol. Im sorry if I didn't help. You really are in a hard predicament. Try sitting down with a teacher to explain your situation and maybe she'll let you go to your locker before. Ask your mom to write a letter to the principal(?) asking could someone hold some for you. IDK, hope you find a solution

How can I make my daughters' birthday special?

sasy2na

My little girl will be 2 years old in November. Last year at her 1st birthday we had a big party with several small children we knew. This year, however, all those families have moved away and we really don't have any close friends with small kids right now. We have plenty of adult friends with no children who would attend her party. We still want to make her party special, but I can't come up with any good ideas for a 2 year old's party with only grown-ups attending. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much.

Answer
well its very simple we do it for our son too he is turing 4 this feb. and it will be his first party with kids as he made friends from school. on his 2nd birthday i ordered a nice cake just something small with a fav charater on it. as most adults wont eat it and he will only eat a slice that day (maybe another later depending on time of party) we did lots of snacky foods that he liked. i got him a pull string pinata and all his aunts and uncles and mommy and daddy and friends all played in on it we all made sure we all knew which pull string would give the goodies and made sure noone but him pulled it. he LOVED that! i ordered some balloons which he loved too because he got to play with them i think i got a dozen of them a few for outside to mark the party house. i made him his own goodie bag by going to the dollar store and picking up small things and a few pieces of candy. got him a few presents and then later that night mommy and daddy took him to the pizza place to have piza for dinner he loved going out to eat for his birthday! small things that go ALONG way! took about an hour to an hour and a half and then party was over and we went for pizza then came home and he was ready for bed! good luck!

My daughter and 18 month old Grand daughter are flying to Hong Kong in a few weeks?

Any ideas how to keep a small child amused on a flight lasting almost 12 hours?

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant who used to be based in Hong Kong. I flew for 13 years and now fly a lot with my own kids since each was 4 months old.

Both at work and when I flew, I found this age to be the most difficult. Toddlers love to roam, hate being confined and don't usually understand concepts like "You'll have to stay seated but soon you can get up".

Our flights are almost as long, 11 1/2 hours. What I find that works are
-anything coloring related, even simple paper and crayons
-a backpack that they pick their favorite toys
-a new toy which I keep and show them onboard.

Don't depend on the airline to give you something. The age might not be appropriate and many airlines have cut those toys out of the budget.

I will say that I don't think a portable DVD player is that great an idea for such a young child. Will she wear the headphones? Can she watch it without sound? Will it really hold her attention for long enough to justify dragging such a heavy object onboard? Will she not spill anything on it or drop it?

For such a long flight, the DVD player would have to have a battery life of at least 5 hours, better more since it's not possible to recharge them onboard. If your daughter thinks it's a good idea, she better try it with your granddaughter at home first.

Just some general tips, I really recommend bringing her car seat and using it onboard. This works great for toddlers and I have had to strap an unhappy little person down more than once. Holding such a big baby in a lap for such a long flight wouldn't be too comfortable and the only way to fly safely with her is if she is strapped into her own seat onboard. Children under 2 are allowed on most airlines because the chance of anything happening are so slim but if something does occur, these children aren't protected.

If you're flying a U.S. airline, here is the relevant page;
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/
The CARES harness pictured above might be a good alternative if the car seat is not needed in Hong Kong;
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/

If you're flying a non-U.S. carrier, check your airlines' website to see if your car seat will be accepted.

If a seat is not booked for your grandchild, see if they can put an extra seat next to them, if the flight's not full.

Both of you keep an eye out for her at all times. Two of my toddlers loved to run into crowds at airports.

Bring a change of clothes and about 1/3 more of everthing than you think will be needed. Put them in plastic bags and rubber band them to save space in luggage.

Advise your daughter to learn to change your granddaughter standing up. Try this at home first! Toddlers are usually too big for airline changing tables and they hate lying down in strange places anyway. This trick will mean not having to hunt down the changer and she can use the handicapped lav during the flight.

About 8 years ago I wrote an article on this subject for a local expat newsletter. Over the years, I expanded it and put it on a blog to share with other parents, many of whom have contributed. I wanted a non-commercial place on the net where parents could get both practical *and* professional information.
http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com

I also recommend a backpack or other carrier. Hong Kong is very crowded and sometimes a stroller is not the best idea. If you ride the MTR, it'll be very useful as those stations are very deep with a lot of escaltors.

Make sure you all visit the restroom and your granddaughter's diaper is changed before the very long ride from Chep Lak Kok into central Hong Kong. It's way out there!

Hope you all will be there during Chinese New Year. It's really an experience!

Have a great time!

What do you think about putting toddlers on "leashes"or harnesses?

Dakotas ma

I was at the fair last night and saw a bunch of kids on leashes or harnesses. It was like a cute little kitty or bear backpack thing. It looked pretty cute plus it's a great way to keep your children safe. I used to be against those because they actually looked so inhumane but now they're cute and the straps are wider so it doesn't look like it would be uncomfortable. What are your opinions on this????
This comment is to samantha24.... Do you think that it's better for a child to watch his/her mom get punched in the face than it is to have them on a leash for a few minutes. Who are you to set down a law and punishment for something so pety?

Answer
I have one because my hubby and I go out to alot of places where there's alot of walking - like all day adventures to major outlet malls, county fairs, Disneyland, etc. My 15 month old gets fussy from being penned up in her stroller for hours. I love to let her out to walk - but I dont want to let her totally free to dart out in front of a car or other people or grab some poisionous plants in a planter, etc.

Basically I only use it to let her stretch her legs and I have to watch her so much more than when shes securely in her stroller. Also - Im a little paranoid about someone snatching her up and running off with her - and when she's on the leash - I know would-be bad guys will see than Im RIGHT THERE and not try anything bad.

I really hate the people who use the harnesses and then ignore what the child is doing. I see this all the time with people shopping in the malls - the mom is looking at one rack and then the kid is destroying the next rack over but the mom has no idea because she feels overly secure in her child's location - just because its on the harness.

What are some good ideas to do at an after graduation party for 8th graders. Games? Dance?

Courtneyy

At my school we normaly have a party after graduation for the whole class in our gym. This year we are having a difficult time planning and finding activities.

Answer
Why the Gym...why don't you use the school field for a fun event.
Needs alot of VOLUNTEERS... start planning now!!!

DECORATIONS: Mortarboards and tassels are the natural decoration themes for the graduation bash. Look for congratulatory banners and balloons, and decorate flowers and tablecloths in the school colors to add to the school spirit. Plus⦠make it A Luau Party⦠Itâs an aloha party because it means hello and goodbye. âWe are saying goodbye to a dear friends, but in a fun spirited way.â Itâs not a sad party; itâs a fun party to remember the good times. Have all the 8th graders and guests wear their summer clothes. Provide your guests with fake leis as they enter the party.

Photos, photos, photos.
To really bring everybody to their knees about how much they're going to miss the person/people leaving, you need photo camera!

Food: Pick any items.
Pizza - order or create your own.
Baked Potato Bar - Baked potato, sour cream, bacon bits, cheese, butter.
Tacos Bar - Beef, tacos, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, cheese, salsa.
Salad Bar - salads, veggies, chicken salad, crab salad, bacon bits, tomatoes, broccoli, etc.
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Nachos - Beef, melted cheese, salsa, tomato, olives, jalapeño peppers.
Hamburgers â Buns, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickle, onion.
Hot Dogs â Bun, mustard, ketchup, relish, red onion.

Snacks: Pick any items.
Popcorn
Pretzels
Chips and Dip
Veggie Tray with Dip
Fruit Tray
Cupcakes
Ice cream Sundaes

Drinks:
Sparkling Water Bottles
Sodas

Face/Body Painting:
Have a friends/volunteers do a fake body tattoo design using face paints or cool color marker pens.

music:
Do you have an ipod? Set it up with a good stereo system. If you donât have one, ask one of your friends who does. Also if youâre in the mood, have a karaoke; this will be a fun entertainment!!!

Farewell music tips:
Forever Young / Chris Isaak
Leaving on a Jet Plane / Peter, Paul & Mary
Say Goodbye / Dave Matthews Band
Thank You / Dido
Changes / Black Sabbath
Going to California / Led Zeppelin
Wild Horses / Rolling Stones
Take the Money and Run / Steve Miller Band
Follow Me Up to Carlow / Young Dubliners
In the Cold Cold Night / White Stripes
Mrs. Robinson / Simon and Garfunkel
Graduation Day / Kanye West
Congratulations / The Rolling Stones
Schoolâs Out / Alice Cooper

Cool Games Ideas:
FLAG FOOTBALL- Guys against girls or combine players
FOAM FRISBEE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have a limbo contest!
Have a Hula Hoop contest!
Teach people the hula dance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OLYMPIC GAME SUGGESTIONS
1.Make an Olympic Torch. Have teams with at least 2 runners on each team (preferably 4 runners), and have a relay race by passing the torch.
2.Set up an obstacle course at park using lawn furniture, old tires, and anything else you can find that people have to go around, climb under or over, and go through.
3.Make some Water Weights and have a weight lifting competition.
4.Play volleyball, but instead of trying to hit the ball back and forth, each team must catch the ball with a blanket and throw it back the same way!
5.Set up six 2-liter soda pop bottles (put a few inches of water in the bottom of each bottle) like bowling pins, and see who can knock the most down by kicking a soccer ball.
6.Make your own Bean Bags and have a throwing competition. Use boxes, cans, paper bags, etc to make targets.
7.Try this peanut toss game. Who can get the most peanuts in?
8.Try a Tug-O-War team! For added fun, place the center of the rope over a small, inflatable swimming pool. From pulling, whomever team who touches the water in the pool first loses.
9.Put an egg on a spoon and walk across an area; make an obstacle course if you like. If you don't want to use an egg, try a marshmallow.
10.Have a discus and/or javelin-throwing contest using paper plates and drinking straws.
11.Make tennis rackets and set up a tennis competition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BALLOON BRIGADE RELAY RACE
This fast-paced race lets winners go out with a real bang. Need: balloons.
1. Assemble each team in single file with the first player in each line holding a balloon.
2. When the whistle blows, each lead player passes the balloon between her legs to the next person in line. Each recipient, in turn, passes the balloon overhead to the teammate directly behind her.
3. The balloon is passed alternately between players' legs and over players' heads all the way down the line. When the last person receives the balloon, he or she races to the front of the line and the balloon pass resumes.
4. The relay continues in this fashion until one of the original players regains position at the front of her line and pops the team balloon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUCKER
Suck or eat a long strand of licorice as fast as you can. Very long thin pieces of licorice for each player. As many players you can get to play. Need: Buy a big box of strawberry laces or licorice (the longer the better). Everyone has to put one end in his or her mouths. The idea is to lick/suck up the lace without using your hands as quick as possible. The room will go silent with the concentration then explode in a fit of giggles when every sees everyone else looking silly! The winner is the first to eat their lace all up yes they can chew donât want them to choke.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CHEETOS HEAD
Try to throw Cheetos at your teammate and make them stick to their head covered with shaving cream. 6 or more players. Needs: plastic shower caps, Cheetos, and shaving creams. One person is seated on a chair. A plastic shower cap (or plastic wrap) is placed on the individual's head. Shaving cream is applied over the entire shower cap. The other team member or members stand behind a line opposite the seated player. During a preset period of time (60-120 seconds), team members throw Cheetos at the seated player and attempt to get them to stick on the shaving cream. The seated player can assist by moving his head to help "catch" the Cheetos.
The team with the most Cheetos stuck on the shaving cream wins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WATER BALLOON TOSS
Try to catch water balloons! Need: water balloons. With each successful catch move further and further apart. Pair off players into groups of two and have them face their partner about 3 feet apart. Begin tossing balloons to each other. Every time the balloon is caught the player that caught the balloon takes a step back. Eventually someone is going to get wet!

You win by being the furthers apart while still successfully catching the water balloon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLIND BEACH VOLLEYBALL (Set This Up Before Guests Arrive)
Volleyball played with a beach ball and with no visibility to the other side of the court. Active. A lot of movement may be required. 6 or more players. Needs: Volleyball court and net, beach ball and sheets or blankets. Standard volleyball rules apply. Except that a blanket or sheet is draped over the net preventing each team from knowing when the ball is coming. A beach ball should be used instead of a standard volleyball. One team serves and the other team has three hits to get it over the net. Serves cannot be returned on the first hit. The first hit for the receiving team must be an underhand hit (a bump). If the ball touches the ground before going over the net, it is returned to the other team for another serve. If a serving team can keep the opposing team from returning the ball, they score a point. If the serving team allows the ball to touch the ground or has greater than three hits, the ball moves to the other team and they serve. The ball must stay within the court boundaries or else a side out results. First team to 15 wins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wet Sponge Relay
Players arrange themselves in a straight line, with a full bucket of water at one end of the line and an empty bucket at the other end. Players dunk the sponges in the water and then pass the wet sponges down the line, with the last person wringing the wet sponge into the bucket and passing it back. The object is to fill the empty bucket with water using only a sponge. The first team to fill their empty bucket wins. Evenly divided into two teams. Needs: Four buckets, two sponges. Time Required: 20 minutes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wet T-shirt Relay Game
Form two teams. The first persons must run to the bucket that is filled with water and ices, she/he must pull out a soaked cold t-shirt out of the bucket, puts on the wet t-shirt, then runs down the field (24 feet away from the bucket) around a cone and back to the bucket, take off
the t-shirt and put the t-shirt back in the ice/cold water bucket, she/he then run back to her/his next team player in line. The second team player person repeats this process. They go through the whole line. The first team/group done wins. Needs: two big buckets, two x-large t-shirts, two team player groups of friends.
Good Luck and Graduation!!!
How am I suppose to let my children go places alone when things like the batman shooting happen all the time?
school bags for kids target
school bags for kids target image
Yeahh
My wife is pregnant.
I've been thinking, how do parents even let their kids go out when they reach the age of about 16?
I mean, I could let my daughter go to the movies and then she ends up being killed by a random angry person.
How am I going to get over this?
Answer
I think time will help..what you are feeling is very normal and I think nearly everyone is gonna to think about this for a few minute at least the first time they go to a movie after this happened especially that movie
I dont think stuff like this happens all the time though statistically.
You will have to role play various scenarios with her like what to do if a stranger approaches asking for help finding a puppy, etc and train this into her a number of times to give her advice on how to react doing so could save her from harm in the rare event something like this happens.
Also pray God's protection over her when she leaves.
When my son was 5 and going to kindergarten 2 blocks away after I had walked him for months. A man tried to grab him minutes after leaving the house and I did not know it till he ran back in the house..this was in the 70s before people even thought about this as abductions were not done much then or talked about at least.
He ran in house telling me what happened and that he turned the opposite way and ran around my car and up the steps as fast as he could where the guy would have to turn car around to grab him easily or maybe he was just lucky. No one had taught him that...he was just a smart kid and knew to get away so this might be something she does innately like my little one did thank God
I think kids would be safer at matinees if going to movies that are not full like this movie was. The man wanted lots of casualties to get on the news.
I believe that most movie theaters who will lose money will respond to this by checking bags or metal detectors which sucks as no more sneaked in food or drink. I know that one will do that.
It is just horrific but I dont think most shooters would target young kids like this guy did.
I feel sad for the kids nowadays..when I grew up in the 50s we were out all night after school and noone worried and it was safe for the most part and life was good. We did get yelled at by a cop once who seemed ten foot tall for going down by the river to bury a dead bird who told us "hobos" could have hurt us and called our parents. well now that I think about it, my cousin and I did have 5 men expose themselves to us when walking to school over the course of 8 years but they never did or said anything and we just told the nuns when we got to school and our parents when we got home
Now we live in a much more screwed up world and kids lose their childhoods and innocence so young.
I dont recall letting my kids do a lot alone though when they grew up in the 70s and 80s as I went with them all the time at a bunch of places. Being a full time mom did make this easier and more natural. Just go with her or supervise her and her friends from several rows back..if she doesn't like it tough. She'll get over it.
Have her go places like to friends homes, school or supervised events, park programs, places where they watch kids like Chuckie Cheese, going to safer areas if needed. You or your wife drive her.
At least most of those kids in the theater last night were with their families at that hour except for older teens maybe. But not much parents could do to protect them except try to shield them..I cant imagine how the parents of those teens injured or killed who let their kids go alone at that time of night are beating themselves up now even though they had zero reason to suspect anything like this could ever happen as the movies always seemed so safe the worst thing someone high or something but mostly calm with a feeling of solitude.
It sucks that guy had to take that away from Americans.
I think time will help you feel safer down the road when your soon to be child gets old enough for this to be a concern
But oh this is so tragic and the world so messed up
Does anyone have ideas for an alternative to a Party Favor bag?
Q. My 5 yr old daughters bday is coming up. Party favor bags are fun, and deemed necessary for proper party ettiquete. However they are expensive, and basically filled with usless crap. I am wondering if there is an alternative? Perhaps something small and with more worth then candy or cheap crappy toys, that is fairly inexpensive that I can give out as a parting gift?
Thanks
Answer
I totally agree. I call those goody bags full of cheap plastic junk "bags of crap". We can all do without another bag 'o crap. Most of it I throw away anyway within a day of my kids bringing them home. I have done books as well; trickier with 5's as most of them aren't reading yet, but I've bought boxed sets from the Scholastic book orders the schools send home and given those books out; they end up being about $2 each. I will give a book with a fancy lollipop (hard to describe but it's on a 10" stick with a heart or flower shaped candy piece at the end. That way there's still the candy element but not so much that it's overkill. With 5's you need to assume a parent will read the book; go with something with mass appeal like Strawberry Shortcake. Maybe if you go the book route you can consider those paint with water books.
I've also given out seasonally appropriate t-shirts; one of my daughter's birthday is in May and I have given out patriotic tshirts (in stores for Memorial Day, continue wearing all summer/4th of July.) These shirts are easy to find at Target for $5; a little less at Kohls if you use a coupon. Again I package with a lolipop. I have seen them on kids all summer. Other friends who feel the same way have given out hula hoops, those skip-it things (like a jumprope that attaches to your ankle and has a ball at the end), and a stuffed fairy. There are a lot of perfectly cute toys out there in the $5 range; too cheap to give as a gift but perfect as a "party favor" which is what you are giving instead of a bag of crap.
Five year olds might not "get it" right away as to why they aren't getting a plastic bag filled with yo-yos that don't work, teeny paper pads they don't use, etc. but it's fine to explain you are giving "one nice thing" instead of a bunch of "little stuff your mom just throws out".
What school supplies/things would you get for your kids even if their school provides all supplies?
best backpacks for kids elementary image
The elementary schools here have started having parents pay a supply fee where the school'll provide all of the supplies rather than have parents buying them themselves (schools say they get a discounted rate for buying in bulk, everything's the same bla bla).
What supplies would you get for your kids anyway, just as part of that "you are special, school is special, and these things are unique to you to make the whole thing more enjoyable" idea?
Answer
Things in addition to the list would be weather appropriate outerwear. If it rains a lot you may want to invest in a good pair of rain boots and a waterproof coat. If it rains in the winter make sure the winter jacket is waterproof as well as the winter boots. It doesn't hurt to have an extra pair of mittens in the backpack in the winter if it gets cold where you live. Labels are good to have, but not necessarily a must. I order the label stickers with my child's name. Every time I go out in the playground someone has left behind a backpack, hoodie, hat or a pair of mitts. It's also good to have the indoor/outdoor shoes labelled. They are usually stored in cubbies with other children's clothing. It's easy for things to get mixed up. You would be amazed at how many kids come to school with identical items.
1. Craft Supplies (Paint, Scissors - different types of scissors, Paper - different types of paper, Crayons, Markers, Pencil Crayons, Sparkles, Glue - different types, Feathers, Fluff Balls, Googly Eyes, Stickers - different types, etc.) <--- they often get projects during the year which requires some at home creativity
2. Pencils/Pens
3. Lined Paper
4. Blank Paper
5. Backpack
6. Lunch Box
7. Water Bottle
8. Thermos (for hot items like soup, pasta, etc.)
9. Plastic Containers (to store extra lunch items)
10. Tape
11. Stapler (they come in handy on occasion)
12. Ruler
13. Three Ring Binder (if old enough)
14. Calendar (Handy for organizing the schedule. My son is in kindergarten and even that has it's fair share of activities)
15. Travel Sized Tissue (good for those cold morning runny noses)
Edit* Even with school supplies purchased through the school, you still need supplies at home.
Need a good backpack diaper bag for two kids?
KookiePenn
Hi. Please, I going on a trip & I am looking for a good backpack/diaper bag which can fit essentials & a little extra (mommy's cell phone, wallet, etc). Any suggestions? I've heard Baby Sherpa is good? Any other brands? Thanks in advance.
Answer
I always like using children's backpacks, especially since then I could have one for each of my kids that they liked or picked out. Especially with my daughter-- that way she wouldn't complain that it wasn't cute. Also, if you get a backpack and don't beat it up, oyu can use it when they are kindergarten, first grade, while they still don't need something big. This article has 3 really good options: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5652566/the_top_3_backpacks_for_girls_in_elementary.html?cat=25
I also like all of the backpacks by Wildkin. You can find Wildkin bags and all other kinds at eBags.com-- I love this website. They always have discounts and they carry good brand like Northface. Also, Land's End has great bags and you can get things monogramed.
Why do students in high school not care what kind of backpack others carry?
Onyx
When I was a freshman last year, I noticed that the upper classes had odd choices in terms of backpacks. Like, someone will carry a freaking ninja turtle pack that's made for little kids, a Mario backpack or even an adventure time backpack. It was sort of funny, and I felt much more free to be myself. Basically, nobody had the same one because they were entirely based on personality. Is my high school the only one that has students that really don't care what other people carry? I'd always heard high school was full of fake people and, even though that's slightly true, its not at all bad like I had first expected.
Answer
No one cares at my school except for ONE thing.
Do NOT use a rolling backpack. It gets in the way of others and trips people and looks very "nerdy" so... yeah.
Other than that, they dont care. Some have backpacks for kids, shoulder bags, gucci bags, messenger bags, string bags, or no backpacks at all!
What volume should I be looking at for a college backpack?
DillonH
I've been using messenger bags in high school but they don't hold much... so I've switching to a backpack for college and was wondering what kind of volume I should be looking at. I'm going to Texas A&M to study Mechanical Engineering if that makes any difference.. Should it be around 1500 cubic inches? 2000 cubic inches? 2500 cubic inches? Or closer to 3000 cubic inches?
If you're going to pick one out then it has to hold a laptop.
Answer
well, you are going to be riding a bike sometimes so you have to have one big enough for everything you may want to carry.
(my Mork and Mindy back pack is way too small) lol just kidding.
I want to say use the one you have until you find out your actually needs.
The next best thing would be to buy a slightly over size one and bring the one from high school to use on lite days.
in limited 2 they hav cute clothes but they r kinda kidish and gaps ok but i cant find everything i like there
id like 2 get colorful skinny jeans and colorful shorts
also id like 2 find some cute tops and a cute school bag
and btw im only 13
Answer
well limited too is expensive.
you could tell her that if you went to other stores you would save more money and get better products.
plus limited too's clothes are smaller and childish so if you tell her that you're thirteen and they're too childish maybe she'll be okay with it.
my parents throw a fit when i come home from school because my backpack weighs a ton. i take home almost everything everyday.
i need to find a way to make my backpack lighter but still take home what i need to do my homework.
plz help!!
ps. im in seventh grade and if u have any more organization tips too that would be great!!!
thanx.
Answer
Have you asked if your school will lend you an extra set of textbooks to leave at home? Then you can have one to keep at school and another to use in doing homework. A lot of schools are allowing this option because so many children are damaging their backs.
Otherwise, see if you can purchase extra copies of the books to keep at home. Then you should be able to get rid of most of the weight.
Also, some students use rolling bags, like the kind that pilots and stewardesses and other frequent travellers use for their carry-on luggage on airplanes; they have wheels and a handle that can be pulled out to use or pushed in to save space. They may be a bit pricey, but it is much easier to push that weight around than it is to lug it on your back.
For the future, you might suggest that your school look into getting copies of textbooks on CDs for students to use at home. I know some kids who have classes where there are textbooks that are kept in the classroom for classroom use and the students are given the choice of a heavy textbook or a CD to use at home for homework. You might try suggesting that idea to the schoolboard. (They may really like it if you mention that it will lessen the likelyhood of them being sued for injuring some poor student's back from such heavy loads.)
Good luck.
Why do African Americans where those childish backpacks with Spiderman, Dora the explorer, etc?
Lucifer
There are lots of them at my school, I was wondering why they wear such baby backpacks?
Answer
I've never seen any black people where I live doing that. Maybe just a silly trend in your town. I remember back in the 90's they hung pacifiers around their necks and I thought it was ridiculous. But I think every race and person makes a bad fashion choice at one point or the next. You grow up and you change.
Maybe you should go up to one of them and ask. Let me know -lol
Here's a thought, I know when I was in school, some kids thought it was too dorky to carry their backpacks or folders around, so they'd bring those flimsy pee-chee folders and roll them up. Maybe they think that by wearing childish backpacks it's kind of the same thing. Like if you have to carry a bunch of books around, might as well make a joke out of it. Like "I don't need to wear a big backpack because I'm not a nerd, so instead I'll wear this kid's backpack because I don't take school serious"
it's not the most attractive but it's not out of fashion. a backpack has to be more about functionality rather than fashion.
What are some good brands of backpacks for high school?
Q. I'm just started high school and I thought I needed a sturdier, higher quality backpack this year. My backpack during the school day weighs about 20-30 lbs on average, and when I pack it to walk home at the end of school it weighs about 25 lbs. My son is starting Kindergarten in a couple of weeks, and i am curious to know how i can make sure he developes good study habits..that will help him in the school years ahead.
Answer
I'm a teacher and I believe that kids should have a break right when they get home, just like adults need a break when they get home from work. Pick a time that is good, maybe right after dinner, and make it time for the two of you. Sit at the table with your child and do something that you need to get done...bills, reading, etc. Make sure your child checks hisher work and that you talk about it when it is completed. Then make sure they put it in the backpack right away..............so it doesn't get forgotten or the dog doesn't eat it!!!
How to act out a funny gym teacher character?
...
I'm going to nationals in speech and debate for humorous interp, which is where you basically act out an entire play yourself, including all the characters with no props. All you can use is body language and your voice, and actions of course. I have to use exactly whats in the script, no improv or extra words thrown in. My piece is about a little kid's first day of kindergarten and its super funny.. so basically my question is,
What are some things I can do to make my gym teacher character more distinct from other characters in my piece and at the same time make it funny?
Examples: One character (the nerd) is always holding the straps of an imaginary backpack
The "cool kid" is always slicking back his hair and adjusting an imaginary tie
The "crazy kid' speaks unevenly and twitches
I'm stuck on what to do with the gym teacher..
Answer
Easy.
Try a drill sargent.
A very bumbling, non-athletic type.
A very by-the-book with rules lawyer type, regulation and contract papers to fill out for insurance purposes and an accident prevention speech.
A germ-a-phobia type that really is afraid of kids and what they may carry.
An old timer, slow and even sleepy kind of over-the-hill and beyond retirement.
Or, the overbearing and self centered, 'Olympian'. Sports medicine graduate and career person.
Have at it.
My little girl will be 2 years old in November. Last year at her 1st birthday we had a big party with several small children we knew. This year, however, all those families have moved away and we really don't have any close friends with small kids right now. We have plenty of adult friends with no children who would attend her party. We still want to make her party special, but I can't come up with any good ideas for a 2 year old's party with only grown-ups attending. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much.
Answer
well its very simple we do it for our son too he is turing 4 this feb. and it will be his first party with kids as he made friends from school. on his 2nd birthday i ordered a nice cake just something small with a fav charater on it. as most adults wont eat it and he will only eat a slice that day (maybe another later depending on time of party) we did lots of snacky foods that he liked. i got him a pull string pinata and all his aunts and uncles and mommy and daddy and friends all played in on it we all made sure we all knew which pull string would give the goodies and made sure noone but him pulled it. he LOVED that! i ordered some balloons which he loved too because he got to play with them i think i got a dozen of them a few for outside to mark the party house. i made him his own goodie bag by going to the dollar store and picking up small things and a few pieces of candy. got him a few presents and then later that night mommy and daddy took him to the pizza place to have piza for dinner he loved going out to eat for his birthday! small things that go ALONG way! took about an hour to an hour and a half and then party was over and we went for pizza then came home and he was ready for bed! good luck!
How do you make Happy Meal Treats to take to school?
gensler97
I have heard of moms sending these to school before. They are individually bagged for each kid, with a treat that resembles a hamburger, fries ( I think it is those string chips ), a drink, and a little toy.
Answer
Are you looking for a little treat that is shaped like a hamburger and fries? Or are you looking for fun lunch treats in general?
Here is a snack combo treat that resembles a burger and fries. The "burger" is a cookie and the fries are like a peanut butter fudge. They are from quickcooking.com There are pictures at the website.
Cookie Burger
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7956
INGREDIENTS
1 package (17-1/2 ounces) sugar cookie mix
2 drops yellow food coloring, optional
1-1/2 cups peanut butter chips, chopped
TOPPING:
3/4 cup flaked coconut
5 to 6 drops green food coloring
FILLING:
1/2 cup butter, softened
2-2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
Prepare cookie dough according to package directions; add yellow food coloring if desired. Stir in peanut butter chips. Shape into 1-1/4-in. balls; place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten slightly with a glass. Bake at 375° for 9-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
Place coconut in a plastic bag; sprinkle 5 to 6 drops green food coloring into bag and shake until color is evenly distributed.
In a small mixing bowl, cream butter until smooth. Add the confectioners' sugar, cocoa, milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Frost the bottoms of 22 cookies; sprinkle with coconut. Top with remaining cookies and gently squeeze together. Yield: 22 sandwich cookies.
"You may substitute your favorite sugar cookie recipe for the cookie mix; just add the yellow food coloring if desired and the peanut butter chips"
Peanutty Fries
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7957
INGREDIENTS
1 package (10 ounces) peanut butter chips
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
Paper muffin cup liners (2-1/2-inch diameter)
Red icing, optional
In a microwave, melt peanut butter chips with milk; stir until smooth. Pour into a foil-lined and greased 9-in. baking pan. Cool completely at room temperature. Lift out of the pan and invert onto a cutting board.
Remove foil; cut into 3-in. x 1/4-in. strips. Fold muffin cup liners in half, pressing out creases; fold in half again. Fold point under; use as holder for fries. Use icing for ketchup if desired. Yield: about 3-1/2 dozen.
Answer
How about Anasazi Bean Soup? It's very simple to make.
You'll need:
1 package Anasazi beans, washed
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 can (about 2 cups) tomatoes, or 1 box of our tomatoes (Pomi from Italy)
1 teaspoon olive oil
Procedure:
Wash beans and pour into pot with 3 times as much water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for about 1 hour.
Then add remaining ingredients. Cook for about 1 hour more, or until beans are tender.
Smoked or other Italian sausage can be added during the last 1/2 hour, if desired. Fabulous done in pressure cooker, using proportions and times as suggested for regular beans.
Best of luck for the assignment!
Just bought a food steamer and a slow cooker?
Q. I'm a college student, very busy going to dental school and I wanted to buy these to help me eat healthier, so people who own these appliances, what are some good, healthy things I can make in my new appliances. They're mini, so can serve one to 3 people. Any favorite recipes?
Answer
When I think of steamers, I think of veggies, which retain more of their nutritive value when they are steamed, but you would have to read up on this. When I want nutritive value in veggies, I eat them raw in salads or I do stir-frys.
I use my slow cooker a lot, primarily to make soup which is so easy to make from scratch in a crockpot. I always have a pot of chicken soup in the fridge, and in winter, I usually have a bean soup in there as well. But the truth is that just about anything you can cook regularly, you can also cook in the crockpot. They are notorious for cooking pot roasts that fall apart and for making stews where the meat is tender and the veggies are not overcooked. You can also make things like caramelized onions in the crockpot and you can make desserts, like cakes, not that I've ever made a cake.
There are tons of recipes across the internet for crockpot cooking, many of them involving cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken soup out of cans dumped on top of a piece of meat. For me, these recipes usually have too much stuff in them to interest me or I just don't want to get into cooking with canned soups. You just have to come up with the things you enjoy eating and learn to make them in the Crockpot. For instance, if you like pot roast, you could brown the pot roast in the morning with some onions and garlic, then put that in the crockpot and set it on high, pour a little wine on top, stick some potatoes in. Turn it to low when you leave the house. Then when you get home, that will be all cooked and waiting for you. Grab your steamer and steam some fresh veggies while you turn on the TV and unpack your book bag or whatever. Then dish out dinner and eat. The leftover meat can stay in the crockpot. I don't have a microwave and I don't want one. About 2 hours before dinner, I take the chilled crock out of the fridge and put it back in the appliance, turn it on high, and let the crockpot meal heat through that way. You can stew a big roasting chicken, in pieces or whole, and eat off that for a whole week and make lunch sandwiches too.
It's a great appliance, its main limitation that it cooks with moist heat, which does not brown meat or give a crispy texture like baking or roasting. And the flavors of the spices are somewhat diluted by the fact that the essences of foods are not concentrated as they are so deliciously in roasting. But for soups, stews, arroz con pollo, stewed chicken, pot roast, they're wonderful. A healthy, convenient way to prepare food, and a godsend since you can just walk in the door and sit down to eat.
What are some essentials for high school tennis practice?
Regina
I have just made my high school varsity girls tennis team. Actual practice begins Monday. I bring a tote with my tennis racket and a water bottle. Should I invest in an actual tennis bag? Anything else that would be handy to keep with me? Thanks! :)
Answer
Andre Agassi wrote about how careful he was about packing his bag before a match. He wanted it as perfect as possible.
Hope you have a *safe place to put your bag* if you must bring it to school with you. A lot of these bags are too large to put into a typical locker.
Here are a few ideas:
name tag to identify your bag as to who owns it,
over-grips,
extra racket(s),
towel(s),
extra shirt,
extra shorts/skirt,
extra socks,
foot powder,
sweater,
warmup pants & jacket,
string straightener,
elastic bands to give your arm(s) a workout,
hat or visor for sunny days
sun block lotion [summer],
water jug with ice in it [summer]
pens/pencils and a little black book for remembering other players' weaknesses and strengths,
plastic bag[s] to put clothing that's soaked with sweat or water,
athletic tape, band-aids, triple antibiotic ointment, etc
granola bars, fruit, or other types of "quick-energy" food. I saw [at a tennis shop] this little yellow, plastic, banana-shaped box used for carrying a banana inside of it. That was interesting :-)
You can learn by observing what your teammates carry. I would say, don't feel that you *have* to buy a name brand tennis bag when *large* duffle bags are available that do not say Wilson, HEAD, Prince, Babolat, Dunlop, etc on it. Might be a good idea to get a bag that doesn't look like any other teammate's bag, so you can pick it out easily.
Whatever you get, you may be stuck with for quite a while, so choose wisely. A lot of stores sell duffle bags, not just sporting goods stores. Shop around :-)
What do you think about putting toddlers on "leashes"or harnesses?
best kids backpack harness image
Dakotas ma
I was at the fair last night and saw a bunch of kids on leashes or harnesses. It was like a cute little kitty or bear backpack thing. It looked pretty cute plus it's a great way to keep your children safe. I used to be against those because they actually looked so inhumane but now they're cute and the straps are wider so it doesn't look like it would be uncomfortable. What are your opinions on this????
This comment is to samantha24.... Do you think that it's better for a child to watch his/her mom get punched in the face than it is to have them on a leash for a few minutes. Who are you to set down a law and punishment for something so pety?
Answer
I have one because my hubby and I go out to alot of places where there's alot of walking - like all day adventures to major outlet malls, county fairs, Disneyland, etc. My 15 month old gets fussy from being penned up in her stroller for hours. I love to let her out to walk - but I dont want to let her totally free to dart out in front of a car or other people or grab some poisionous plants in a planter, etc.
Basically I only use it to let her stretch her legs and I have to watch her so much more than when shes securely in her stroller. Also - Im a little paranoid about someone snatching her up and running off with her - and when she's on the leash - I know would-be bad guys will see than Im RIGHT THERE and not try anything bad.
I really hate the people who use the harnesses and then ignore what the child is doing. I see this all the time with people shopping in the malls - the mom is looking at one rack and then the kid is destroying the next rack over but the mom has no idea because she feels overly secure in her child's location - just because its on the harness.
My daughter and 18 month old Grand daughter are flying to Hong Kong in a few weeks?
Any ideas how to keep a small child amused on a flight lasting almost 12 hours?
Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant who used to be based in Hong Kong. I flew for 13 years and now fly a lot with my own kids since each was 4 months old.
Both at work and when I flew, I found this age to be the most difficult. Toddlers love to roam, hate being confined and don't usually understand concepts like "You'll have to stay seated but soon you can get up".
Our flights are almost as long, 11 1/2 hours. What I find that works are
-anything coloring related, even simple paper and crayons
-a backpack that they pick their favorite toys
-a new toy which I keep and show them onboard.
Don't depend on the airline to give you something. The age might not be appropriate and many airlines have cut those toys out of the budget.
I will say that I don't think a portable DVD player is that great an idea for such a young child. Will she wear the headphones? Can she watch it without sound? Will it really hold her attention for long enough to justify dragging such a heavy object onboard? Will she not spill anything on it or drop it?
For such a long flight, the DVD player would have to have a battery life of at least 5 hours, better more since it's not possible to recharge them onboard. If your daughter thinks it's a good idea, she better try it with your granddaughter at home first.
Just some general tips, I really recommend bringing her car seat and using it onboard. This works great for toddlers and I have had to strap an unhappy little person down more than once. Holding such a big baby in a lap for such a long flight wouldn't be too comfortable and the only way to fly safely with her is if she is strapped into her own seat onboard. Children under 2 are allowed on most airlines because the chance of anything happening are so slim but if something does occur, these children aren't protected.
If you're flying a U.S. airline, here is the relevant page;
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/
The CARES harness pictured above might be a good alternative if the car seat is not needed in Hong Kong;
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/
If you're flying a non-U.S. carrier, check your airlines' website to see if your car seat will be accepted.
If a seat is not booked for your grandchild, see if they can put an extra seat next to them, if the flight's not full.
Both of you keep an eye out for her at all times. Two of my toddlers loved to run into crowds at airports.
Bring a change of clothes and about 1/3 more of everthing than you think will be needed. Put them in plastic bags and rubber band them to save space in luggage.
Advise your daughter to learn to change your granddaughter standing up. Try this at home first! Toddlers are usually too big for airline changing tables and they hate lying down in strange places anyway. This trick will mean not having to hunt down the changer and she can use the handicapped lav during the flight.
About 8 years ago I wrote an article on this subject for a local expat newsletter. Over the years, I expanded it and put it on a blog to share with other parents, many of whom have contributed. I wanted a non-commercial place on the net where parents could get both practical *and* professional information.
I also recommend a backpack or other carrier. Hong Kong is very crowded and sometimes a stroller is not the best idea. If you ride the MTR, it'll be very useful as those stations are very deep with a lot of escaltors.
Make sure you all visit the restroom and your granddaughter's diaper is changed before the very long ride from Chep Lak Kok into central Hong Kong. It's way out there!
Hope you all will be there during Chinese New Year. It's really an experience!
Have a great time!
He just walks up and down the hallways having conversations with himself. Yesterday, he stopped in the middle of the hallway, jumped up, and said "I hear something Shaking" and started hitting his backpack. Then at lunch he was talking to a pole. Is he schizophrenic? I'm not making fun of him, but i just want o know what is his condition because of my thirst for knowledge.
Answer
Hmmm... there are actually symptoms of different things here.
Schizophrenics (depending on the severity of the problem), display several symptoms.
Schizophrenics don't necessarily talk to themselves. They suffer from delusions (either visual, auditory, or thought-based). Thought-based delusions are harder to define, but they involve feeling that people are looking at them, judging them, plotting against them, or just out to get them. Sometimes the delusions are auditory (where they hear voices telling them to do things), or they are visual (where there'll see things that aren't there.) Schizophrenics can ALSO have the tendency to not move at all or react to external stimuli (a condition called "catatonic schizophrenia.")
Fixating on weird objects or obsessing on objects (like doorknobs, and poles) and communicating with them is a symptom of autism or high functioning autism. But there's a lot more to autism than just obsessing about weird objects or talking to them.
Is he speech delayed, is he able to communicate and instigate conversations with others? Can he differentiate between friends and "acquaintances?" Is he gullible and trusting of others to get screwed over, or is he untrusting of everyone? Does he interact with toys in weird ways (like instead of rolling a car across a table or floor, he flips it upside down and spins the wheels)? When he does talk to others, does he have any eye contact? Does he require to have what is instructed of him to be repeated? Does he have an acute attention to detail (like when he looks at pictures, does he look at the picture as a whole, or does he notice minor details within the photo)? Does he get easily frustrated? How does he perform well in the classroom? And when he talks to himself, can you hear what he says? Does it sound like he is verballizing his thoughts (saying his thoughts aloud) or is he actually having conversations with himself? Those are all questions that are considered when dealing with autistic people (or people on the autism spectrum, such as people with Asperger's, High Functioning Autism, etc...) People with certain degrees of autism often have been diagnosed as schizophrenic as well.
Ultimately, to come to a definitive diagnosis of what he has is extremely difficult to do if you don't know all of the symptoms. There is A LOT that goes into determining what is wrong with someone. The symptoms that you described don't really show the whole picture.
would 7-10 year old kids like a backpack or a duffle bag as a gift?
Shitij-www
I have to give a freebie gift to children aged 7-10 years. I've noticed they either carry a cartoon backpack (Barbie, Ben10, Batman, etc) or a branded backpack (Nike, Adidas, Puma) to school.
Would these kids appreciate a well design backpack or a well design duffle (gym) bag to use for travel and hobby classes.
I want to make goodie bags for the kids coming to the party, but honestly don't know what would be cool for 10 year old boys.
Answer
Whoopie Cushions! Boys think they are hilarious! My oldest son is now 14. But a couple years ago they still did a Christmas Gift exchange at his school. Problem- you had a limit of $1.00. Tough to find something for a 10yr old for a buck. I went to the dollar store and bought a whoopie cushion. My son said that everyone in the class wanted one! And they were all jealous that they didn't get it.
Find items that kids think are funny! Then add some candy and gum. I don't think you could really do cars, trucks, or toys at this point. My 9 old doesn't play with that kind of stuff. We are in an electronic world unfortunately!
What is someones opinion on school uniforms?
Andaiye J
I'm doing a debate on school uniforms and unfortunately I have to go against them which sucks because it is hard to find evidence on how they are bad. Anyone have any suggestions?
Answer
... I am a teacher in a school that mandates uniforms... I also have 4 kids... I am sick of the smae yadda, yadda, yadda, BS answers...
here are the REAL problems
1) the do NOT protect students from intruders: uniforms can be bought at ANY store (guaranteed by anti-monopoly laws) so any Tom, Dick or Harry can buy them. Since ANYONE can buy a uniform and people ASSUME that isnât the case, it makes it easier for strangers to sneak onto school campuses.
2) they do NOT make students safer: when a student is doing something dangerous or in violation of school rules/safety measures it is harder to distinguish individuals in a crowd of uniforms than in a crowd of free dress style clothing. As uniforms imply... they are uniform... they all look the same... so if you see one person attack another, by the time duty teachers get there the attacker can be gone and hiding in the crowd.... so uniforms facilitate breaking safety rules
3) they do NOT improve appearance more than a strict dress code would, NOR do they reduce distractions in class due to appearance: most districts in our state that have gone to uniforms do so for appearance. However, uniform pants can sag, shorts can be too short, & shirts too tight. If student dress codes were enforced for regular clothing, uniforms would not be needed to deal (ineffectiv4ely) with these.
4) uniforms negatively affect the Self esteem of students that are shorter, taller, skinnier, or fatter than most of their peers: uniforms are uniform. They are not designed to accommodate multiple sizes and shapes. Therefore, most are cut to fit the majority (average) of the population and the others look poorly dressed in them.
5) uniforms do NOT eliminate the discrepancies between the haves & have nots as proponents would have you think: the haves still have more expensive shoes, socks, book bags, jewelry, etc and the have nots now have TWO wardrobes to buy for: school & home.
Dont just take my opinions... read for yourself!
