Okay so my school is going on a trip to N.Y.C for D.E.C.A. we are going for three days and we have to bring our own snack stuff. we wont be spending much time in our rooms ((4 to a room) we plan to share) and i need some ideas for quick snacks. we already have pringles and chex mix. we need some healthy stuff but we dont have access to a refrigerator(only an ice machine) so let me know what you think.

Answer
My daughter goes to NYC every year with her school and they stay there for 4 days too! Here's are what her and her friends bring every year to eat on the bus and to keep in the room, Hint, AVOID chocolate, it melts everytime! You might want to also bring along baby wipes (get the travel packs to keep in your bag, to wash your hands etc and hand sanitizer)

-Granola Bars
-Trail mix
-Bottled water (they also bring those single serving mixers that you put into water to make them flavored. Everyone brings a box and they all share)
-Goldfish -Pepperidge farm cheese flavored snack
-Kraft Cheese and Crackers. (individual packages with cheese on one and and either crackers or little bread sticks to dunk in the cheese)
-Juice boxes
-Pretzels
-Hard Candies (she says their great to pop in your mouth to fend off bad breath when you cant brush your teeth on the bus!..LOL)
-Fresh fruit such as Apples, Pears and Grapes. Avoid oranges and other fruits that you have to peel..they get messy

Good luck and have fun! oh, and PS....if your bringing along cash for food in NYC, most fast food restaurants, like McDonalds and Burger King charge more than the south. (I lived in NYC for 26 years before moving south and know this to be true, so bring extra money along! have fun!!!!

What Should I Overall Expect in New York?

WuTs BeHiN

I'm going to New York on July 17th with my high school and I just wanted to know what overall to expect.

* How much will I most likely spend on lunch. We're not going anywhere fancy for lunch. [[Our Breakfast and Dinner is Included in Our Travel Plan]]
~ Where is the best place to buy souvenirs?
* Also do you have any tips for when we go to China Town. I really want to buy some purses. How much do prices range in. And is there like one vendor that has the best deals and products?
~ What Is Little Italy like?
* And is New York dirty like with rats on the street?

Thanks just answer what you can.

Answer
Hey ok I accually live in NY now (5th AVE. Is a famous place, im only a block away :) anyway on lunch expect for something good/descent go to a deli or something so say around $7.00, also try to suggest to the person your in a group with to buy water where you live now because a bottle of water in Manhattan is anywhere from $2.50 to 5.99. Also always bring snacks because the vendors are not always clean ( you can tell by just looking at them) but most of them are clean. Souvenirs I say go on 5th Ave because there are plenty of souvenirs there for you and if not there, there are little store scattered throughout the city with NYPD OR NYC tee-shirts, ect. Ok now China Town--pay attention. Usually the guys/girls with the bags are the with kinda like tarps and garbage bags(they look homeless). Always say, "i want to see the good stuff" also remember to negotiate because they will give you a high price but you can knock it down. ALSO WHEN YOU GO INTO A BAG STORE AND THEY SAY GO TO THEIR VAN OR WHEN YOUR ON THE STREET AND SOMEONE SAYS THEY HAVE BAGS IN THEIR VAN STAY FAR AWAY! IT IS DANGEROUS AND THEY ARE TRYING TO SCAM YOU. NEVER GO TO AN UPSTAIRS OF A PLACE, THAT TO IS DANGEROUS. just use your head, people will try to scam you. remember to say with many people and in Chinatown NEVER get split up. Little Italy is nice but it is mostly resteraunts and souvineer shops ect. Good shopping is done on Madison Ave, 5th Ave, South Street Sea Port, and Chinatown. New York is a bit dirty but also it is a city so it is kinda nasty but not bad and there are people who clean the garbage so if you do your part to keep it clean it stays nice. Also there are no rats on the street, but it is possible cause there can be rats anywhere even where you live. Overall New York is a BEAUTIFUL city and if you handle yourself well you will have a great time. Also never act goofy or point or you will get some nasty looks. For fun go to the South Street Seaport at night to see the sun set, its beautiful. Central Park is nice this time of year because there are sometimes concerts (Jazz) (nothing that great but its something to do). Anyway have a great trip, follow my tips and it will be amazing. Also so you don't look dumb don't act like such a tourist because us NYer's don't walk around with cameras around our necks. But remember take lots of Pics! Enjoy your trip

Does anyone know where I can find a free sewing/quilting pattern for a backpack for teenagers?

I want to quilt/sew a full size backpack for our kids school--not the little kiddie size ones that are for younger children.

Answer
Wild Ginger has a software program that is free called "Wild Things" - you tell it how big you want and it prints pattern pieces on your printer - you just tape them together. There is a backpack with a flap, as well as a zippered messenger bag, called a shoulder bag on their descriptions. I've used this program to make matchy halloween bags. I'm just a satisfied dedicated customer - no affiliation...

I did a search for "backpack" on craftster.org, and got like 20 pages of homemade backpacks that people have made there. I think what might be most helpful for you might be the messenger bag tutorials below, with double straps instead of one - the straps would attach at the top and bottom. It is not that hard to do and doesn't require a pattern.

How long does an insulated bag work for?

~ <3 ~

I'm going to be at college for 12hrs, plus another 2hrs driving time.

If I were to keep some food in an insulated bag, APPROXIMATELY (to your best knowledge) how many hours max would it stay fresh for if:

-the food was reallly hot or frozen?
-it was just sorta cold?

Thanks.

Answer
I found this for you. Hope it helps!

Lunch Bags & Boxes
The first thing you will need is a container in which to pack the lunch. It doesn't need to cost a lot of money. For adults a small cooler makes a great lunch box. Fred uses a medium sized cooler. He is usually gone for 24 to 48 hours, so he needs alot of food to keep him going. For children and teenagers, you can usually find inexpensive lunch boxes and insulated lunch bags at yard sales and thrift stores.

Small children often prefer a plastic lunch box with cartoon characters on the side. I suggest you buy these as cheaply as possible. They only last for a year or two before the children drop them or the latch breaks. At $6 to $10 a piece, buying brand new boxes has never been a good investment for me. I have purchased them new when I desperately needed the thermoses that came with them. After the plastic lunch box broke, I purchased replacements from my local Goodwill. I continue to use the same thermos year after year.

If the art work on an older lunch box is shabby, you can easily replace it. Use rubber cement to glue down a new picture (cut to size) and then cover the picture with clear contact paper. I've done this, and it lasted almost 2 years, until the lunch box cracked and became unusable. Amy D. describes the process in detail in the first book of The Tightwad Gazette.

For older children insulated lunch bags work best. They don't have the juvenile connotations of plastic boxes with matching thermoses, so older kids usually don't object to carrying them. I like them because they don't break when they get drop-kicked across the livingroom by a budding football player. Since they have soft sides, it is easier to fit more food and odd-shaped containers in them too. They usually have zipper closing and shoulder straps for carrying them. I buy the largest ones I can find because I find them easier to fill. Many modern insulated bags have several extra zipper pockets and sections on the outside to carry little extras like napkins, spoons and salt or pepper packets. My boys like these but they aren't really necessary. Purchased brand-new, insulated lunch bags cost between $5 and $15. If you wait until back-to-school-sales you may find them cheaper. Over the summer they can often be found at yard sales. Insulated lunch bags usually do not come with their own thermos, so you will have to use some you already have or buy them separately.

Scoliosis brace information/advice/help?

Mizea

I'm 16, and recently found out that I have Scoliosis. Around 30 or 35 curve, I don't remember the exact number.

I'm starting a new school soon and I'm already nervous about that. Soon after I start school I have to visit someone for it. My mom read up on it and said I might have to wear a brace. I don't know anything about braces. I've looked up pictures and they seem to range from corset looking to ugly and bulky or wraps or down right scary.

What are modern braces like? I wouldn't think they hurt but are they uncomfortable? Do they show under clothes? Will it affect my asthma? I'm nervous and don't really know what to expect.

I'm not really into sports besides Archery, volleyball and badminton. Will it effect how I play, or if I can?

Answer
Long but I hope it helps.

If the curve is <25 degrees, it can be observed and followed with routine X-rays and measurements. If the curve is 25-40 degrees, a brace may be recommended. If the curve is >40 degrees, then surgery may be recommended.

I wore a Wilmington and Boston. I was 12-13 (8th grade) with the Wilmington, a body cast at 14 (freshman), and 15 (sophomore) with the Boston. With both, I had to wear them for 23 hrs./day. You have to have a strong sense of self and not let it mess with your idea of body image. It's clunky and you don't look/feel like everyone else, but keep in mind why you are wearing it. You want to keep your body as healthy as you can and try to correct your back. Sometimes you do need surgery even with a brace. But in that case the surgical correction would be easier because of the brace.

Here are some more tips from my personal experience:

Liking it...The first few nights, it's hard to fall asleep in the brace. Once you get used to it, sleeping isn't too bad. But now, some days if I'm feeling a little achy, I miss it. You could be lazy and let the brace do the support work your muscles usually do.

You have to have a strong sense of self and not let it mess with your idea of body image. I had a spinal fusion with iliac crest bone graft in 1985 (13 yrs old). I still have a 40 degree curve, a prominent shoulder blade, one shoulder is higher, my hips a little uneven, and rib prominence on one side. But my spine is stable, no breathing or cardiac problems and I carried to pregnancies without a hitch.

The one shoulder is higher makes it easier to sling a shoulder bag on. And those uneven hips...that one that juts out a little more is a perfect resting spot for an infant.

I have no problem wearing backless things. I think I have a great back scar. The hip scar, not so pretty. But everyone, EVERYONE, has problem areas on their body. I'm an RN, I've seen thousands of naked bodies, no one is perfect. Be open with your friends about what's going on. Here are some other famous people who share scoliosis with us: http://www.scoliosis-world.com/famous_peâ¦

Try and see a positive...you have a legitimate reason to go shopping : ) You'll have to adjust your size. Some braces are larger than others, some more visible than others (like the Milwaukee). I wore baby doll tops in warm weather, and sweat shirts and bulky knit sweaters in the cool. Pants and shorts had to go up a size, wear draw string or elastic waists, or you can uses one of those expand a waist button extender things.

Check out maternity or plus size clothes. Target and JCPenny are good places since you can shop both types of clothes at one store. Many designers who design for juniors and ladies also have plus and maternity lines. Maternity is a good choice because only your torso is bigger and maternity clothing is built to have give and room in the body while the fit through the arms and legs doesn't change that much.

Dealing with hot weather...I was only allowed out of my brace for an hour a day. I stayed inside as much as possible (our AC broke one summer, ugh!). Read, go to movies (it's always freezing in our local cinemas), the library, shopping, etc.
-On mild days, I laid on the floor in front of an open sliding glass door, the breeze would blow in a little between the brace and my skinâ¦spent lots of time reading that way.
-Always wore a fitted sleeveless undershirt (A-shirt) under the brace (men's come in packages of 3 and are cheaper than women's).
-On days I was outside, when I came back in I wiped any skin that was under the brace down with rubbing alcohol to remove the sweaty, grimy feeling (get your mom to do your back); wiped down the inside of the brace with alcohol too; and changed into a fresh undershirt.
-I was only allowed out of the brace an hour a day, unless I was in the water swimming. So I swam whenever I could talk my folks into taking me. But you have to be in the water, not just hanging out at the pool.

If you are being treated at a Shriner's Hospital/Clinic, it's absolutely the best place for scoliosis patients under 21! Wherever you are at, ask the docs/nurses if they can arrange for you to visit/talk with other patients. Other places may do this too, but I think Shriner's goes above and beyond for their kids.

Answer
Have you thought about going to your school counselor and the other schools in your area? A lot of the kids at my school, (I am a school teacher) get jobs by talking to the counselor. Our counselors get lots of calls for things like babysitting and tutoring. You can also go door to door and talk personally giving the moms a little "resume" about you and maybe even some numbers of some who you have done some babysiting for. You could start off as a mother's helper so that you can play with the children when their mom is home so that she can see that you can do a good job. If you have friends that already babysit, ask if they would introduce you to some of the people that they babysit for and maybe you could babysit with your friend so that the parents could get to know you and the kids can warm up to you. When the kids are happy, the parents will call you back! You can make a babysitting bag with all types of games, make-up, books etc and show the moms what tupes of things that you would like to do with their kids other than watching TV or playing video games. It may take a while to get established as a "professional babysitter". I actually loved the younger babysitters because they still liked or at least didn't mind playing with my children and they were not so prone to be sitting on the phone with a boyfriend the entire time. I Think you are definately old enough, you just have to prove yourself as being responsible. Good luck!

How do I outsource herbal tea manufacturing?

Q. I am hoping to launch a niche tea business, but do not have manufacturing capabilities myself - just looking to outsource the blending, the bagging, and the packaging, etc.
Does anyone know of any companies (perhaps in UK, but not necessarily, that offer this type of business arrangement, on low-volume orders initially?

Answer
I'm doing an online tea school, www.startateabusiness.com that discusses all this and gives examples of good places to use and how to even have your companies label put on it. A lot of stuff I never knew was possible. It does cost money, but it's a great price and I think you are supposed to be pretty well set with the knowledge you need to do it. I don't know if you want online biz or a shop, but both are covered extensively. If you are doing herbal, it should be pretty easy to get. familiar companies also offer wholesale. teasource.com has a wholesale option. Usually wholesale is priced per pound and I'm not quite sure how much you have to buy. I'm sure a lot of other tea web companies have wholesale too.. it's just usually not something they list prices for. You are supposed to contact them. Let me know if your interested in getting more information about some different tea biz information places.

How can I make money from china wholesale?

Right

I often see many people sell the replica lv bags near the school. And they are very cheap. But in top quality. And I also buy a lv bag from them, it is very good. I am happy, then I think if I can buy them directly. Maybe it can be cheaper, and maybe I can resell them to get profit. Then I ask a friend that how can I get them. He told me he got them in the site:www.wantbuymore.com. it is a china wholesale shop. I can get anything there.

Answer
run a search for the product you want to sell and the words "distributor wanted".
The search will give you web sites to contact the importers that will sell whole sale to you.

If you try to import and sell them your self, you will need a lot of money as you MUST import a large shipment worth tens of thousands of dollars. You can't just import a few items at a time because of the cost of shipping and handling.

If you do import several thousands items, you will need to find distributors for all the items you imported. It is better to let someone else import them and you buy "wholesale" from the importer and retail them on Ebay or near your school.

what do I need to know, for planning purposes, about walt disney world?

I am planning (kinda, I am a bit overwhelmed, really. Having trouble making decisions.) a Disney world trip to Florida this February. Yay for Mardi Gras week off in NOLA area!!!!

But it seems there is just a great variety of activities and places to stay. Seems like the only way to go is to purchase a package stay at one of the resorts with a meal plan for everyone in the party. Pricey at first glance, but it says you save if you go this way. Is this true? It is worth the hassle to find and pay for your own meals?

My kids are 7, 5 and 2. (Crazy.) Should I buy the hopper option? We were going to stay away from Epcot and Hollywood theme parks, but they say that there is some thing for all ages at each one. Having never been there, I don't know what to do!

Any tips? Oh, yeah. We are a military family and do have an option of staying at a resort called Shades of Green. But I was wondering if it be better to stay in one of those other ones. Sometimes if you go for the cheaper "on base" you get basic amenities. If I'm forking over thousands, I want to at least have a great bed and feel like I am at Disney, not an army base in the middle of no where. Anyone stay there? Is it nice enough and did you save money by staying there?

I know these are LOADS of questions, but any tips/comments would be VERY helpful. Thanks in advance! God Bless!

Answer
REGARDING PACKAGES:
My family and I have never invested in packages ourselves, but we've gotten excellent military deals (we are military as well). We therefore paid for our own meals and other expenses, and it was definitely worth it to my parents (not sure what your taste is, though).

REGARDING SHADES OF GREEN:
I have been to Shades of Green myself; it is very lovely. You totally feel like you're still near Disney World (sometimes you can even catch a glimpse of their fireworks shows while in the Mickey head-shaped pool). I recommend it.

REGARDING PARKS:
Hollywood Studios: There isn't a lot of face character activity here. There are several interesting shows and attractions that show you the behind-the-scenes and special effects processes that films undergo. There are many, many rides here that everyone in your group will love.

Animal Kingdom: It's quite wonderful. Plenty of animals to see, four different and beautiful shows, and one fantastic roller coaster (Expedition Everest).

Magic Kingdom: It definitely caters to those of a younger age, or those who are young at heart! For those who love those characters, though, it's the perfect choice! Still... Magic Kingdom always has a perpetual sense of childlike magic for guests of every age.

Epcot: It's lovely for all ages. There's an aquarium, simulation rides, and the many "countries" you can visit. The countries are strung together closely, so you can get a taste of many countries at one park.

TIPS:
Pack clothes accordingly. Within the past week, the high has gone from 60 degrees F to 86 degrees F at Walt Disney World. Winter also means the temperature can be fickle, so look up the weather each day you're on your trip so you know how to dress.

You will need a backpack to carry the following (you will probably have a stroller, so you can put the bag in the stroller at times).
-Sunscreen: sunscreen is a must, especially for those with fair skin. Make sure you are well-supplied with it. Reapply as necessary.
-Snacks: definitely bring snacks and water bottles with you into the park. Crackers, fruit snacks, beef jerky, etc. are good amusement park snacks-- bringing your own, instead of buying them from vending carts, saves a *lot* of extra cash. As for water, you can bring disposable bottles or washable bottles (like Camelbak bottles). Either way, you can refill them at water fountains when you run out.
-Camera: you can also keep your camera in a camera bag (if you have one) around your neck. But backpacks keep them from being knocked around and keep them away from water. Note: when meeting characters, have your camera ready. If you take your own photos, you may be happy with those you took and may not have to purchase the professionally-taken pictures.
-Autograph book(s): if your kids intend to meet characters, it's nice to have an autograph book for the characters to sign. You can find inexpensive autograph books, made especially for this purpose, virtually anywhere in Orlando.
-Money/wallet: aside from cards, bring cash if you intend to purchase vendors' snacks/desserts or souvenirs.
-Anything else you will need. Will you need extra batteries for your camera? Medications? A map or brochure? Even band-aids? Think carefully.
Note: the rides at Walt Disney World are specially designed to house your belongings. No need to rent a locker for your backpack! Rides (especially roller coasters) will have a spot for your bag(s)(usually under your feet, your chair, or the chair in front of you). I'm not positive about strollers, however.

Other tips:

You definitely want to make the most of the trip, so I definitely suggest arriving as soon as possible-- when they open, if you can. If you get there when they open, you have time to fastpass the rides you want. If you do get there early, you may want to trek over to the other side of the park and work your way towards the front-- this allows you to ride rides against the flow of the masses (when you're at the back of the park when they open, there won't be many people crowding the rides in that area at that time.
Note: the fastpass service is undeniably awesome. IT'S FREE, too. If there is a ride that you don't want to miss (but it's also a popular ride), fastpass it if possible. Read about fastpasses here: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-â¦

Keeping smaller children in mind, you may want to visit a "less-interesting" show if they get tired and fussy during the afternoon. Most daytime shows are 20-30 minutes long, so they make for good naptime interludes for infants and toddlers.

This is the best advice I can give you for a trip to Walt Disney World. My family and I have learned from experience, and I hope it will help make your trip more enjoyable.
Wish you the best. Have a great time!

If your house has clutter are you a slob?

joyce

My tables and dressers are covered with my school work , mail, my children's schoolwork and some odds and ends. My husband thinks I'm a slob and I have 3 kids and go to online school full time. I don't have time to unclutter all the time. My floors, dishes , laundry, and trash are taken care of. Am I typical or a slob?

Answer
wow you are busy. i agree that your husband should pitch in and your children can help too. it sounds like your house needs a few better places to put stuff.. maybe cubbies for the kids' school work, an office in tray for the mail, etc. if there's a place to put stuff, your family is more likely to put it away themselves. being organized has never been my strong suit, but when my kids were in school, they all helped make lunches the night before, got their backpacks packed and ready with school things for the morning and got their clothes ready too. it made mornings less stressful, it only took 20 minutes at night, and they all became more responsible for making sure they had what they needed. they all had chores to do throughout the week, too. i was a lone parent for many years and just couldn't "do it all"

Like if they grab your backpack or say crap to you. What do you usually do. Sometimes i get so pissed at kids at school. Without caring what they will do and not thinking about it
The last part i meant to say "How are you able to not care how they react and not think about it?

Answer
You laugh at them. When someone does something to you they are looking for a reaction from you. If they don't get the one they are looking for they go look for prey that they will get it from.
Don't say anything just laugh. Bullies hate being laughed at. They will lose face with their buddies who are watching. If they hit you then you have grounds to go to the authorties and press charges against them. If they don't then you have also won.

How do women from other countries carry so much weight on their heads?

jzeb100

The schoo project im doing requires coming up with a solution to help people carry weight that they arent supposed to carry. Average man is supposed to carry 15% of their weight, but many people carry more and backpacks for school kids also cannot hold a lot. Im doing some research and found African woman can hold 70% of their weight on their heads, but how do they do it?

Answer
One reason for the African woman's ability to bear loads effortlessly seems to be her posture. As a girl, she learns to stand so straight that her pelvis and vertebrae line up like a well stacked pile of blocks.

Another reason may lie in her gait. At the beginning of most persons' strides the head bobs up and the body slows; then as the foot moves forward, the head dips and the body accelerates. This bobbing and dipping and accelerating and decelerating requires a lot of effort. But African women put all their energy into moving forward. The vertical motion is absorbed in the bones and soft tissue. Hips bob less than ankles; shoulders bob less than hips; and the head (with its burden) bobs not at all. Thus, while most people bounce along like wagons on egg- shaped wheels, African women move like wagons on round wheels.

I tried putting in some references for you of interesting articles but everytime I do I get ERROR 999!!
Try typing a sentence from above in google to find it. There was also another interesting paper in Nature magazine..

Planning the party:

Two to three weeks before the party begins:
Make Wizard Maps for invitations. Round the edges of parchment paper with scissors. Write the party details to Hogwarts School (AKA your house), using invisible ink felt pens (available at the craft stores). Roll the invitation into cylinders, insert into mailing tube, along with a decoder pen, and mail to Muggles.
Begin preparing the props, costumes, and decorations (see below).

Party Set-Up - A few hours before the party:
Welcome the guests with a sign at the front door that reads "Platform 9 3/4."
Decorate your party room like the Great Hall at Hogwarts School.
Make "snitches" by spray painting Styrofoam or rubber balls gold, then glue feathers on each side, and hang them from the ceiling.
Cover the walls and ceiling with glow-in-the-dark stars, moons, and lightning bolts.
Set out stuffed toy owls, broomsticks, magic wands, and potions (candy-filled bottles).
Cover the table with a paper cloth featuring stars, moons, and lightning bolts, and add matching paper products.

More game ideas:
Play a version of Quidditch, Harry's favorite game, by providing the kids with a ball, some broomsticks, and a large area to play in. Divide the group into two teams, set up two goals on either side of the yard, and have the kids try to brush the ball over their own goal line.

Have a Harry Potter Trivia Contest and ask questions based on the book - or a 'Who Said What?' game based on Harry Potter quotes.

Have a Flavor Bean Tasting Contest. Buy a variety of jellybeans and place them in small paper cups covered with foil so they aren't visible. Pass one cup around at a time and have each player taste a jellybean without looking at it. Players must try to identify the flavors. You still I think can find actual bertie botts flavored jelly bellies at Barnes & Noble

Make Potter's Magic Potion by combining 2 cups white glue and 1 1/2 cups water together. Add a few drops of food coloring. In a separate container, dissolve 2 teaspoons borax in 2/3 cup warm water and mix well. Mix the borax and glue solutions together, and let the kids watch what happens to the mixture. Pass out handfuls and let the wizards work their magic. Wear smocks for this activity - it's messy, but fun!

Create your own own Wizard Capes and Magician Caps. For capes, cut length of inexpensive silky lining fabric and let the kids decorate it with felt-tip pens, glue-on glitter, and decals in the shape of stars, moons, and lightning bolts. For caps, give them lengths of felt, cut into rectangles. Fold the felt into a cone shape, staple it closed, trim off a straight edge, and decorate with glue-on sequins, glitter, puffy paints, and decals.

Serve Cauldrons of Snacks and Wash them down with Magic Potions:

Buy a plastic cauldron or use a black pot for serving the food. Fill it with soup, macaroni and cheese, or beef stew.

Serve "magic potions" in plastic goblets. Offer multicolored drinks - red, blue, green, orange - for added fun. Called them Rum-Runners.

Offer the guests a variety of Harry Potter snacks and treats - Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans (assorted jelly beans), Fizzing Whizbees Levitating Sherbet Balls (green and orange sherbet balls), Droobles Best Blowing Gum (blue gum), Creepy Chocolates (in the shape of frogs, bats, and rats), and Peppermint Humbugs (peppermint candies.)

Make Harry Potter cookies using a Harry Potter shaped cookie cutter.

Provide Harry Potter desserts, such as apple pie, trifle, jam donuts

Hope this list is helpful to you.

I don't know how schools are in the UK. But it seems just a bit inappropriate. You might give people, especially boys, the wrong impression. Better leave it at home.

Interesting how this wound up in the Los Angeles forum.

What can I make that sells well at a garage sale?

school bags for kids ebay image

nunemak

I am having a garage sale soon and thought about making things to sell to gain a little extra money. Has anyone had any luck selling homemade items at a garage sale? Please share!!!

Answer
Well, the first thing I'd do is post your garage sale on gsalr for free. http://www.gsalr.com

For things that you can make, I've seen cookies and brownies sell well, and then you need something to wash it down, so lemonade or pink lemonade, or bottled water. Those aren't really why people are there in the first place, but it's what will entice them to look more.

I've seen people make embroidered items specific to the local area. Hats, sweatshirts, bags, etc. Maybe with the highschool logo, or grade school mascot, etc. I haven't researched machines yet, but may in the future as my wife is interested. I've seen Husqvarna (http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/428.htm) I've also seen people dress up stock teddy bears with local school clothing which seem to sell.

Oddly enough, I've seen people make buttons like this -> http://www.politicalshop.com/sku/FRONTRUNNERGOLD.jpg
With it being political season and all, you could make pinback buttons of each candidate (even magnets and mirrors) and sell them.

My wife has a 2 1/4" machine and loves it, but haven't really sold them anywhere, but know many many people do. It was mainly for our kids, friends and family. You can buy the machine and supplies here -> http://stores.ebay.com/Button-Safari

You could make antenna balls with your local schools mascot. But I agree with a poster above, custom lawn ornaments, signs about your dog, your kids, etc. I saw about a dozen signs on my bike ride this weekend that said "2 spoiled dogs live here" with different numbers depending on the # of dogs in the house.

And don't stop with garagesales if you will be making homemade/customized items. Take your offerings to the Internet. eBay seems to be a great way with low overhead and low startup cost to test the waters.

Good luck!

What to get a 13 year old girl for her birthday?

Lauren

She is happy with pretty much anything, as she says it. She isn't very girly, so mall gift cards and make up aren't her thing. She likes vintage retro things and loves music, but she claims she doesn't need any more music gift cards either. She already has a phone. Does anyone know what she might like?

Answer
Hi,

Here are some ideas you may like. Pick some of them or use all of them to make your little one's special day unforgettable.

1. Call her friends, throw a surprise birthday party and get a cake custom-made

You can get a birthday cake customized for your little girl. Find out her favorite cartoon character or anything that makes her excited. You can simply ask the cake makers to make a cake shaped like a doll if she loves dolls. Make sure the cake is big enough for the crowd.

2. Arrange games for the kids

The Whispering game can be a good choice. Kids are fascinated by this game. This game helps them to modulate their voice. It takes a lot of concentration and thus, makes the kids aware of sounds. This game can also come in handy when you want your kid to be quiet. You can also go for the 'Don't fall in the sea' game. Encourage the kids to consider the carpet as the sea. Encourage them to reach the other side of the room without stepping in the sea. Place cushions, magazines, paper plates etc. across the floor and use them as stepping stones.

3. Party favors!

You can create various baskets having some items. You can put crayons, play doh, soft balls, stickers etc. in a basket and gift them to the little ones. You can also give away gift cards of McDonnalds because kids love to have fries and other food items available at McDonnalds.

4. Pick a nice gift for your little one and give it to her in front of everyone

The joy of people clapping for her gift will be bigger than the happiness she has for the gift itself. So, pick a good birthday gift for her. You can gift her the betseyville sequin backpack that will be great for her school. This is a fun sequin-embellished backpack with adjustable straps and top grab handle. It also has a 2 drop magnetic snap closure and 1 large zip pocket single internal zip pocket. You can create a gift basket for your daughter with the help of this bag. Pick a large bamboo basket and set retro style sunglasses, some soft toys, a doll, candies and new dresses around the sequinned bag. Decorate the basket with flowers and ribbons. You can also check out some other backpacks featuring Princess prints on http://clothing-and-accessories.become.com/betseyville-sequin-backpack--compare-prices--sc1630825375 and eBay.

Where can I purchase individual or bags of desktop keyboard keys?

school bags for kids price image

MacMan2511

I work at a school and some students have removed certain keys off some keyboards, instead of replacing the whole thing, I was wondering if anyone knows where I can purchase individual keyboard keys. I have tried on eBay but no luck.

Answer
I don't believe too many places sell them by the key...keyboards are cheap enough that they buy them as a set.

Also, depending on the model of the keyboard, the actual keys may not be compatible with that particular keyboard model and the key may be too large or too small, etc...

PS...if you charge students/parents for the price of the whole keyboard, chances are sooner or later they will stop pulling them out. Once it affects the wallet, parents start disciplining their kids with actual conviction.

How can I become a really great tennis player?

school bags for kids usa image
Q. I'm 14 and in 8th grade and it's he end ofthe school year but in 9th grade I want to be on the tennis team !!! The school I'm going to is the number 1 best in the state so it'll be hard to get on!:( any tips? I just joined a gym so I'll be running etc and it also has tennis courts so I'll play with my older brother and get lessons once and while... What else? I neeeeeeeeed to make this team!!!!!!!!

Answer
If you want to move up the ladder of tennis' many different levels of skill, then the quickest way to do that is to take lessons. Here are links to three [USA] tennis-teaching organizations. There should be a function in the web sites below for plugging in a city, state, zip code, etc to find a teaching pro near you :-)
http://www.uspta.org/
http://www.ptrtennis.org/
http://www.mtmca.com/

If you aren't already a highly-ranked tournament player, in my opinion, you should be spending most of your time hitting tennis balls rather than working out at a gym, running, stuff like that. Not that fitness is bad, it's great! But it doesn't help you get better at hitting tennis balls. Understand? Spend as much time as you can on the court, hitting.

Try to get out and hit tennis balls five or six days a week. If you only play or practice two or three days a week, it's very difficult to make progress and improve. Dedicated, work & play on a daily basis is what counts. Of course, good coaching and enthusiasm count, too. If your technique is lousy and you practice a lot, all you're doing is ingraining bad technique. Yuck :-( Not good.

Call or email other kids and play prartice sets. Have fun with it!! If things get dull, work on your behind-the-back shots, 'tweeners, catching the ball on your strings, fun stuff like that. Don't spend the whole day with it, lol.

If your strokes are not yet *thoroughly* learned in your head, I recommend waiting a couple of years before you play your first "serious," sanctioned USTA-tournament where rankings are on the line. You can still play practice sets or practice matches. A good teaching pro will be able to give you advice on whether or not you're ready for tournaments.

A very famous coach from the Spartak Academy in Russia said that it's a big mistake to play tournaments before a player's technique is thoroughly learned. Read about her in "The Talent Code" below.

Here are some sources of online tennis information. Some things are free, others cost money

FAR more important than winning is your **sportsmanship.**

Why is sportsmanship so important? Because if you use gamesmanship, cheating, intimidation, etc to win a match, it's a lot like stealing. Don't expect people to forget what you did, because they won't.

To avoid these problems, read: **"The Code."** It tells you how to deport yourself in matches that have no officials. If you always play by The Code, you will stay out of trouble and be able to make friends with other players, coaches, etc who also value good sportsmanship :-) Unfortunately, there are some people who couldn't care less about it. It's a mixed bag, and nobody's perfect in this department!

Along these lines, the screaming that some of the top players do is a problem, because it is, in fact, gamesmanship, and IMHO, the ITF, ATP, WTA, USTA etc etc etc ought to have banned it entirely many years ago.

Get yourself a copy of "Rules of Tennis" from http://www.ustashop.com/

Click on "Books" in the left-hand margin. When the Books page comes up, you can order yourself a copy with a credit card. "Rules of Tennis" costs $2.95 plus shipping.

Best of luck, hope you have some fun along the way as you struggle to become the best player you can be :-)

How can you start your own litter patrol group?

Goobzie

I want to help make a difference but there are no groups to join in my area. I bet I could get some kids in my school involved but I don't know how.

Answer
You know what it's like - you're on a lovely walk or a drive in your neighborhood when the scene is suddenly spoiled by the sight of soda cans on the ground, bits of paper flying in the breeze and plastic bags hanging from the trees. The problem will not go away by itself.

Every day the average person walks or drives by 12,000 items of litter.

Cigarette butts, the most common litter in the USA, take up to five years to decompose.

Plastic bags can float from tree branch to tree branch for up to 20 years.

Plastic six-pack covers last up to 450 years (and can kill birds and marine life).

Aluminum soda cans hang around for 500 years.

Glass bottles can stick around for up one million years.

But you can do something about it. Here's how Green Hands USA can help you organize a Litter Patrol to keep your neighborhood beautiful and clean.

At what point in life was it OK for public schools to start searching bagged lunches and confiscating Hostess?

Homey Don'

Before or after 2008?

Remember, they search the bagged lunched against Michelle's "inspired" criteria. Then they'll confiscate and force students to eat a cafeteria lunch which has been sanctioned under Michelle's guidelines.

Answer
After, they were granted that with the latest and greatest healthy food initiative for our schools. I still don't see how chicken nuggets made out of who knows what is healthy. Wait, there's more to it then searching and snatching lunches, weight is now within the parameters of the school and the health care bill. The schools will be required by 14 to weigh and assess all kids then report it to the national data base. The federal government through the health care bill has the authority to educate parents on health eating habits and life styles, if they don't change. They can now take the kids. Pass it to know what's in it.

What are some good fundraising ideas for a small group of kids?

Lora

We are a church youth group planning on going to Oaxaca, Mexico to work on building a school. Its VERY important to us. We need to raise approx. 1000 per kid. If you have and ideas on fundraising events, or and businesses that may be willing to sponsor us. Please, let me know.

Answer
My son's French club raised $1,066 per student for a trip to Quebec City by selling 6-inch hoagies (subs) for $3.50 each. The sales were phenomenal. Nearly everyone asked was happy to purchase a sandwich. At $3.50, this was something affordable to all. On the day the sandwiches were to be distributed, the students gathered in the school cafeteria to make them assembly-line style, which took only 2-3 hours. This is one of the most successful fundraisers we have ever participated in.

Another popular fundraiser is a cookbook sale. Perhaps the women of your church could help in soliciting and gathering recipes, with an equal amount from total sales being deposited in each child's account. This would also work well for church bake sales, quilt raffles, rummage sales, spaghetti dinners, etc.

The members of a local church are often seen in front of our Walmart selling bags of various flavored Tootsie Rolls for $2 each. They do this each year, to fund trips to South America.

Another successful fundraiser in our area has been the ever-popular candy bar sales through a local candy maker. Ask at your school for the names of the candy salesmen they use. We also have a pizza shop that participates in $5 cheese pizza sales, as well as a convenience store that offers coupons for a sandwich, chips and drink for $5. As with the hoagie sales, these are enormously popular. Check with the pizza shops and convenience stores in your area to see if they offer similar fundraising opportunities.

Last but not least, a local public school teacher found her calling in Uganda, where she eventually settled to set up an orphanage. Through the generous donations of the students who deposited the change from their lunch money into a jar each day, an orphanage, clinic, and school were built and furnished in just over three years. Where there's a will...

It is my hope that you are able to utilize some of these ideas. Good luck to you and your group.

What kind of backpacks/bags do most High School kids use?

Stephanie

I'm going into High School and im not totally shure what kind of bag or backpack I would use? Cause I see most girls use something like a beach bag, i'm not really shure what those would be called.
Please help.

Answer
A few idea's:
Okay so most girls at my high school use big bags like you said because we have to bring our gym clothes, after school clothes (sports), lunches, ect.
So i bring on the days i have no after school activites and no gym class my vera bradley bookbag. I carry it and then when i go to lunch my lunch is in it, along with my normal things in my purse.

Another idea would be an across the chest bag. I have a coach one. They are around 100 dollars and are very in. you can put just the few things you need need in it for the day if you do not want to bring a purse. A lot of girls not just at school but in magazines ect. are using these.

Finally there is the big bag. Victoria Secrets Pink is a brand we all use. I have a Marc Jacobs one i caught on sale. American Eagle, Hollister, or Forever 21 will have one also that is trendy.

As far as the backpacks go we all use Northface. They are 100 to 200 dollars and are very in. you can order them online or get them from a sporting goods store like Dick's ect.
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

What do primary school kids have in those bags with the school emblem on them?

jumpychees

This applies to the UK. During the past 3 or 4 years, I have seen primary school children taking an A3 sized bag which is the same colour as their school jumpers with the logo on it. They are also carrying a normal school bag and sometimes a lunch box or bag.

As I don't know of anyone with a primary school aged child, I cannot ask them.

Answer
they carry their school reading books that are given to them to read at home, and they take them back to school as they read it to their teacher. also sometimes the work they do at school they are allowed to take them home later

Stevie

Currently, we have a Chevy Equinox (which I love) and an older model Saturn. The Equinox, of course, is our family vehicle and my main mode of transportation since I have a shorter commute and transport our daughter around daily. My husband drives the Saturn and has a much longer commute. The Saturn isn't going to last much longer so we're trying to decide what to replace it with.

Unfortunately, a year ago, my husband got in 2 accidents within a month, totaling both our cars so our insurance rates are through the roof; therefore, we do not want 2 large car payments (meaning our current one for the Equinox and whatever we get to replace the Saturn). This is why we're searching for something that is no more than about $10k. I love our SUV - it's so convenient and family-friendly. My husband says we should just get another SUV, but I cringe whenever I have to fill up my gas tank and believe it or not, I care about the environment despite having an SUV! Originally, we were thinking a sedan, but even the larger ones (he totaled our Malibu) can still be a pain with infant strollers, car seats, diaper bags, beach stuff, and there's no place to put our 70lb German Shepherd mix. While we can usually plan ahead and use the SUV, there have been times where my husband has had to pick up my daughter in his car or take the dog somewhere and it's just not the greatest vehicle for it.

Because of this, I'm leaning towards getting a wagon. It just makes sense for us because we do plan on having another kid in the next few years as well. My problem is, well, most wagons are not attractive. The ones I've seen in our price range are A LOT of PT Cruisers (yuck!), and some Chevy HHRs (ugly but oddly don't mind it; husband hates it) and Dodge Calibers (neither of us mind it, but they're so cheapy inside). Occasionally, I have found a VW 4-door Rabbit with a surprisingly large trunk area or a Volvo wagon which I oddly like. I know the safety of Volvos and VWs are pretty high which is really appealing, and I've also heard their reliability is quite good, BUT they are very expensive to fix/maintain. Even the cheapest, most routine things can be super expensive with these cars.

So, I'm torn. Do we go for a Chevy or Dodge with arguably lower reliability and safety and plastic interior but it's cheaper to maintain/fix OR do we go with a Volvo or VW that's safer and better quality but if you do need to fix something, it costs a lot?

Any other suggestions we haven't considered? It's important to us that the used vehicle has no more than 70k miles on it as I know we can get nicer quality cars but only if we're willing to get one with higher mileage, which we're not.

Answer
Ford Escape. You can get a 4 cyl model with AWD for the snow (if applicable). They have pretty good reliability, fuel economy, and are surprisingly spacious considering the smallish exterior. Also, you can open the rear glass so your dog can have a good time observing the world.

How do I entertain a 15 month old all day?

Jo

I am a stay at home mom and need ideas on how to entertain my son all day now that his is so much more active and curious. He has all kinds of toys ranging from very simple blocks to complicated electronic toys. I play with him off and on during that day and give him alone play time while I'm cleaning. I want to start doing more educational activities with him but I don't know what to do. Is it to early to start doing educational activities other than reading to him? Also what are some fun activities we can do?

Answer
My daughters 18 months and the best thing I ever started doing was flipping her toys around.
I spent a couple days sorting every single toy she had, I made sure the pieces for certain toys were bagged and together with that toy.
Then I split things into "groups". For example she has a full kitchen set with cups, a play kitchen, a shopping cart etc...I packed all those things together.
She has some animals, a barn and a few trucks and cars I grouped
And she also has some dolls, play stroller, blankets, fake diapers, clothing etc..

I swap these groups of toys out once a week :), its amazing how she actually plays with those toys now that theere isnt hundreds to just pick up, throw and walk away from.
Then I spend some one on one time with her and teach her the animals, or have tea partys, we play grocery store etc..

Also dont take for granted the trips to the grocery store, tons of opportunity to learn about shapes, colors, how to say hello to little friends who walk by.

I also really recommend taking your son to some programs offered in your community. Look for open gyms for toddlers, library reading time, pre-school/toddler mommy and me meet ups, tots swimming lessons.
Social interaction is super important and social skills cant be taughter, rather they are "learnt" and the only way to learn the skill is to be exposed. Also kids tend to want to mimic other children, so finding a group with kids a little bit older then your son will model some new skills he might not have yet, or is working on right now.

Get out once a day, even if its just to check the mail, or walk down the street. Getting some fresh air (even if its raining) is so important to their health and burning off some pent up energy is a savour to you as well :).

My daugher LOVES to help me around the house, she's bring me a piece of two of laundry to put in the washer, she helps me sweep, she even puts the cutlery away out of the dishwasher, cleaning u her toys (I try to include her in these things and she loves the immediate praise).

Singing songs is SUCH a great way to learn. Take the classics (like twinkle twinkle little star) but sing your own words as your changing your son or giving him a bath (sing what your doing, the body parts etc..).

You really dont need to buy education toys- theres so much around you to get him involved. Google some home made playdoh recipes, get some paint and do art (finger paintings alot of fun and the textures are great), if you have corn starch add a bit of water to it and let him play (another great texture activity).

Be as verbal as you can in your everyday, the more you do it the more itll just come naturally...the more enthusiam you have to the tone of your voice, the more interest your son will be, its really the simpliest things like WOW we have 3 blocks here , look 1, 2, 3!!!!

Okay this tote is for school so it needs to be pretty big. I have done some research and so far I have found nothing. The tote does not need to be huge but not Abercrombie or Hollister small. I would appreciate links, pics, and suggestions of totes. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone have a cream horn recipe?

school bags for year 9

school bags for year 9 image

hello

When I was in high school (30 years ago) I used to get these great, fresh cream horns. They had a whip cream sort of filling. Heavier then whip cream though. Looking for a recipe. Need to know how to make the horn too.

Answer
Cream horns Recipe

1/2 Basic puff pastry; see
-recipe
1 Egg yolk
1 ts Water
3/4 c Whipping cream
3 tb Powdered sugar
1 ts Grated chocolate
Substitute
1/2 pk Frozen puff pastry (17-1/4
-oz)

Roll pastry into a 15- x 9-inch rectangle. Cut into 9 (15-
x 1-inch) strips. Starting at tip of mold, wrap one strip
around an ungreased 4-inch metal cream horn mold, winding
strip spiral-fashion and overlapping edges about 1/4 inch.
Place on lightly greased baking sheet, end of strip down.
Repeat with remaining strips. Combine egg yolk and water;
brush over entire pastry. Freeze 10 minutes. Bake at 425
degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until puffed and golden
brown. Remove from oven, and gently slide molds from
pastry. Turn oven off. Return pastry to oven for 10
minutes. Remove from oven, and cool completely on a wire
rack.

Combine whipping cream and powdered sugar; beat at high
speed of an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Spoon
whipped cream into a decorating bag fitted with metal tip
No. 4B. Pipe whipped cream into pastry horns. Sprinkle
grated chocolate over tops of cream horns. Chill until
ready to serve. Yield: 9 servings.
NOTE: One-half (17-1/4-ounce) package frozen puff pastry
may be substituted for 1/2 recipe Basic Puff Pastry.

What school bag should I get for next year?

Charley

I am going into grade 9 next year and I don't want to be one of those girls who carry a truck on their back. I need a bag which will be comfortable and can carry a reasonable amount of books. I like cute styles, back packs and some shoulder bags. I want this bag to last till the end of the year. Please tell me which stores or brands
Thank you, and I will happily take in your advice.
Ps: oh I'm in a state school so there are no rules on this ;)

Answer
Try just carrying your books, people I know usually make fun of the people who carry bags.
