They have two girls. We thought it would be nice to bring them something from the states as gifts. The girls ages are 11 years and 8 years. Any Ideas. As well as some ideas for the adults.

Answer
For the girls, T-shirts, bags or other things printed with the newest in movies for girls that age.
Like last year it was High-school the musical.
Or a famous American singer, or boy band for the older one.
(Ask the parents for the size or buy for a taller girl than you would expect that age in the USA, Dutch girls are often tall but not fat.)
If in doubt, but bags and accessories rather than clothing.

Or books American girls those ages like, English will be a little problem for the younger one, the older one might not even have problems at all. But comics or diaries for the coming school year will often do well.

For the parents, if the are American living in the Netherlands, bring things they like but can not or not easily buy here, root beer and mountain dew are some of the hardest things to buy.
But if they are Dutch,do not bother, they do not know what they are missing.

Always a good thing to bring are crafts and specialties that are special for where you live, like New England can bring maple syrup or cranberry preserve.
Always good are books with photos of your area, and as it are cousins, maybe you can bring photos over of your relatives in the USA.
(But try to judge how much they already have and have seen, have they been in the USA.)
If you have a good souvenir shop near you, go in and have a look.
Often you will see items you like but may want to buy from a craft shop or other kind of shop.

Keep the value of the gifts moderate, you want to say: "I am happy to stay with you," you do not want to say: "See how rich I am."

What is YOUR reaction to America's response to the Holocaust?

~If you refer to the Evian Conference, it was appalling. As Golda Meir expressed it, "With friends like you, we don't need enemies".

Historically purges and massacres of Jews was common. Witness the Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans. The Vatican had its Crusades and Inquisitions. Numerous expulsions/slaughters of Jews occured in Switzerland, Scandinavia, the Low Countries, Spain, France and England. Catherine of Russia that established the Jewish Pale At different times, government officials in Great Britain and France devised (but did not implement) plans to expel the Jews and settle them in a colony to be established for the purpose on Madagascar. Hitler wanted to do the same, but the war prevented his Madagascar Plan. As late as 1940, he told Himmler that killing them was not an option, that such "was a Bolshevik solution". Himmler, Heydrich and probably Goering conceived and organized the killing centers - surely with Hitler's approval but they might not have briefed him in until after the Einsatzgruppen had begun operations. By the Wannsee Conference, the killings had been underway for almost a year. George Washington and Ben Franklin urged at the Philadelphia (Constitutional) Convention that the constitution expressly expel Jews and deny them entry into the USA, or, if allowed to enter, deny them equal rights, equal protection of law, due process, the right of citizenship and the right of property ownership. In 1543, Martin Luther published "On the Jews and Their Lies", in which he advocated for burning synagogs and Jewish Schools and business and confiscating the property and wealth of "those vermin" and "devil's spawn", concluding "We are at fault in not killing them". The pamphlet was warmly received by clergy (Catholic and Protestant) and laity alike.

NSDAP sentiment toward the Jews was the norm, not the exception, although they may have carried it to a further extreme. Given the Crusades and Inquisitions, maybe not. Genocide as national policy was/is nothing novel. The US Bureau of Indian Affairs did the First Nations people, the Khmer Rouge had the Killing Fields, the Ottomans did the Armenians. More recently we have Bosnia, Rwanda, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and the Congo (Zaire - where Mobutu Seko was installed and protected by Uncle Sam as he carried on his slaughter) and Indonesia (Where another CIA puppet, Suharto, was installed and protected even as he massacred his people). Other US pawns, installed by CIA, like Saddam, the Shah, the Somoza boys, Armas, Branco, Noriega, Papa Doc and Suharto filled their share of body bags, and the final tally might well rival the Nazi body count. Wrong Holocaust? Okay. My reaction to the US response is disgust and disdain, because the policy continues with the blessings of the power elite and the ignorance or unconcern of the hoi poloi.

Current propaganda is more disgusting. Are you aware that the Jews comprised but a minority of those exterminated by NSDAP "ethnic cleansing" and "racial purity" programs? In the thousands of Concentration Camps, as many as 18 million died. Those camps were not murder factories and the deaths were largely due to starvation, overwork, disease and the general conditions (not unlike the conditions at the CSA POW camp at Andersonville, Ga, or the Union POW camp at Elmira, NY). Hitler and Himmler both ordered on more than one occasion that conditions be improved because of the appalling death rate and those orders were obeyed to the extent possible, given the shortages of food and medicines. Although it was not of great concern whether the inmates lived or died, efficiency and need demanded that the maximum work be garnered from the slaves before they expired. Of the dead, approximately 3.6 million were Jews. In the dozen or so Extermination Camps, as many as 6 million died. About 2.4 million were Jews. Of the 6 million Jews who died, many would have suffered the same fate for other reasons, even had they not been Jewish. Had the Red Army not effectively repelled Barbarossa and gone on to defeat the Third Reich virtually on its own, with little meaningful military assistance from the Western Allies, another 30 million ethnic Poles, 30 million more Slavs and at least 30 million more Russian and Soviet Communists had been slated for extinction. The genocide against the Romany, Sinti and Serbs, as a factor of population, was far more complete than that of the Jews. The US did not enter the war because of the genocide - of the Jews or anyone else.

It is disgraceful that the vast majority of victims are ignored and forgotten. It dishonors their memory and encourages repetition. By the way, "Holocaust" refers to the entirety of the Nazi genocide programs whereas the purge of the Jews is known as "Shoah", at least in Israel.
