HELP. I need some cool, MEGA 'interesting' crafty ideas...?

Red

Hi, so like here's abit about me. I'm a girl. I'm 17 and I'm in high school. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lately I've been thinking really hard about starting something up that could help my community, and were I could earn some pocket money too. I was thinking of doing something crafty. Coz I'm really creative and stuff. There is this Org. that makes handbags out of recycled plastic bags. I think that they are really cool! I want to do something similar, but I'm kindoff stuck. I thought of going around collecting empty glass bottles, painting them, and selling them as vases. But its kind of impractical I think, coz a lot of people are poor and wouldn't want to spend money on something like that. So it would also have to be cost efficient. Any ideas are good though. I need as many creative thoughts as possible! Thanks in advance! =D

Answer
Start with community service no pay. Our school children must have 80hrs of non paying work to service others in the community before they can graduate with honors. While volunteering to help others like minded good folks will see your cause/ worth and help you help yourself and others.
Reaching out starts with by going within ourselves to sprout. A seed underground can not be seen while in is the the birthing state then POP the plant is there before your eyes. That is how thinking to actions are. All thoughts are just that, until the thought moves forward into action. Go do something.

dating this guy . . . . .?

MEHNAZ B

I have a good guy friend for the last ten years, and we were both still in high school. We had did all hanging out together as a group of friends, holidays together, got to be 'part of the guys' and just all had fun together. We had went to the same university and had the university experience together as well.

About 5 years he had gotten married (arranged) and just recently got divorced with a child as the outcome. He was married for 5 years. He had kept in touch throughout the marriage (we had not went out or anything else like that). So obviously knew his situation and that from what he had told me. His now x wife had known that we had a close relationship, and knew who the group of friends were.

On friday night, he had come over to meet my way older brother n cousin. HE made himself at home, and the rest they seemed to have gotten along. Yesterday, my brother had called to voice his concerns which where very similar if not the same as mines (regarding the child, where we stand, and all of that. He thinks its safer just to remain friends than a friendship like any brother would say - not up to his standards n I could do better).

Last night we had went out for a drive around town and to see what was happening and to collect something to eat. While we were together, he said that he had seen a few guys looking and trying to get a look while we were together n a guy asked him for my number. He obviously declined giving it. When he mentioned it that every time we go out, guys cant stop staring ( not because of bad dressing, was in a reasonable length mini skirt with a sleeveless top, an open toe shoe and a bag - we live in Johannesburg so its still summer).

What would you guys think? of the situation, comments?'

Answer
girls that wear mini skirts are beautiful and confident

How can a kid make money?

CJ

Answer
Are you able to collect bottles and cans for recycling? Even my 7-year-old daughter carries a bag with her when we walk our dogs in our neighborhood. Together we pick up grocery bags full of aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles, and we put them all in our wagon and cart them across the street to the recycler where we turn them in for cash. If you have a parent who can help you, collect lots and take them to your recycling facility. Here in California, plastic bottles are five to ten cents each and they buy aluminum cans at $1.25 - $1.75 a pound. we regularly get $30 every time we take in our bottles and cans.
Can you eat candy at your school? My sister would buy a bag of individually wrapped candy sour balls and sell them to her friends at school at twenty-five cents each. She would buy a bag of those candies on Monday for $2.00 for the bag and come home with $15 in quarters by Friday. If you are able to sell things at school, try selling really fun pencils. My daughter brought in to her classroom all of the pencils we got for free at fairs and special event booths, and the teacher later told me all the kids in class traded in their plain yellow pencils for the brightly colored pencils my daughter brought in. If you could get a lot of different colored pencils, could you sell them to your classmates at twenty-five cents each?
Have you been picking up those pennies, nickels, and dimes from the ground? We find pennies everywhere we go! We find pennies, nickels, and dimes even in the dirt under the soda machines at Yosemite National Park! We find pennies on the floor at Wal-Mart and local supermarkets all the time. We find pennies on the sidewalk and in the street everywhere we go, and every night when I walk my dogs I find at least 2-3 pennies! Pennies are still money! We were walking home from a walking field trip to sing Christmas carols at the school district offices, and right in front of the line of walking second-graders I found thirty-five cents on the sidewalk by the corner store! Pick up those pennies! We put them all in my daughter's piggy bank, and when it's full we roll the coins up and cash them in at the bank, and we usually cash in $25 at a time. Offer to help clean and vacuum your relative's cars and ask to keep whatever change you find in them. Some people have several dollars in coins in their cars and never bother to cash them in. Collect them, put them in a jar, and take the coins to your coinstar coin counter at the supermarket and get your money in dollar bills. We do. I am a grown-up and I still pick up all the pennies I find on my college campus! High school campuses are great places to find pennies as well. Look under the benches at the football stadium, especially if there is nothing but dirt underneath them. My sister and I regularly found quarters, nickels, and dimes under the bleachers at the football stadium at the high school down the block after their Friday night games.
Are you good at fixing things? I knew a kid who started at the age of 10 collecting bicycle parts he found being thrown away in the trash, and then he bought new tires and seats, painted the frames, put the bikes back together, and then sold them at yard sales at his house. He averaged around $500 a month in sales of his bikes. He now is grown up and owns his own bike shop. Another young man I heard of years ago had access to all kinds of free tickets to sporting events and concerts around Los Angeles. His dad had a job where he got complimentary tickets to major events and never used them, so the boy took the free tickets to his friends and sold them for face value and made a lot of money - enough to open his own business as a ticket broker. He still to this day has his own ticket office right down the street from his old high school, and has made a lot of money as a ticket broker just by starting selling his dad's unwanted free tickets.
Another boy I knew was really good at woodcarving while still in junior high. He carved all kinds of wonderful little animals and leaves and flowers and today is still selling his woodcarvings, and makes wooden signs and fun garden statues and is still happy doing what he loves.
In other words, there are lots of ways to find money or earn money if you keep your eyes open. Me, I've been recycling and getting the money for it since I was 16 and got my driver's license. I'm teaching my 7-year-old daughter to do the same. She now demands a dollar for helping me every time we cash them in.

Most embarrassing school stories?

Your Mom

I'm in the mood for a laugh.. So I'll share some of my stories, but make sure to comment yours! Lol most of these are about my crushes.. But hey, they make things awkward !!

Well when I was in preschool, I had on overalls, and I couldn't get the buckle undone, so I peed my pants. I locked myself in the bathroom until my mom came to get me because I was embarrassed. Haha

Uhm, in 5th grade we were in line to go someplace.. and I was lineleader. The teacher said she'd be right back and walked out of the room. I didn't hear her say she'd be back - so I followed her down the hall thinking the class was behind me..

In 8th grade my crush and I got assigned a science project together. We were in the kitchen baking cookies (adding different ingredients to see which ingredient makes the dough rise more and stuff..) and my crush and I were flirting and our cookies burnt and caught on fire and set the fire alarm off.. so we got introuble. Lol

This one was probably more embarrassing for my crush, but I was embarrassed too! We were standing next to each other in P.E. and some of the kids were running around crazy. And my crush was wearing gym shorts (omg, I'm laughing so hard just thinking about it), and this kid was running towards him and tripped.. And the kid reached out to pull himself up as he was falling (OMGG I'm in tears now from laughing), but the kid grabbed my crushes shorts, and pulled them down with him as he fell. Baahhah omg, I can still remember it.. He had on batman boxer shorts.. My face turned as red as my crushes!!

In like 7th grade I was in the bathroom, and if you pull on the door knob hard from the other side, the door unlocks. So I was just sitting there on the toilet and getting ready to wipe, and the door flies open.. and this girl that was like a grade below me is there. And she starts apologizing and walks away but leaves the door wide open into the hallway!

One day for P.E. we went outside. And it had just rained so the grass was wet. And I had on new white Nike Shox, that got caked with wet grass. So I went into the bathroom after P.E. to wipe them off. And when I was done cleaning my shoes, I flung the door open. There was this really hot guy standing outside the door, and the door smacked him right in the face. I felt sooo bad.

In 8th grade, I was in my locker getting books, and my pencil bag dropped on the floor. So the guy next to me and I both bent down to pick it up at the same time...and he banged our heads together.

My school is SUPER small so I'm the only girl in my class. But we eat lunch with the grade below us, so I'm friends with the girls in that class. And one day I had a new shirt on from Aeropostale. But I forgot to take the little circle sticker off that says the size. So all morning I walked around with a "medium" sticker on my boob. And at lunch my friend said "so you have medium sized boobs?" And we started laughing, but I was soo embarrassed and hoped none of the guys saw it!

In 8th grade we were doing the presidential fitness for P.E., and we were doing the shuttle run. But when I turned around to run back, I lost my balance and fell flat on my stomach infront of the whole 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes. My crush (once again.. goodness that boy!) came running over and helped my up and asked if I was okay.

I've added a few more since last time I asked this! Your turn now :D

Answer
Um in 8th grade I was wearing these new jeans and I didn't realize the sticker that has the size was on the back of my thigh. I didn't see it at all and we were in the lunchroom before school started and when we were released my friend tore it off and I was like Thank God you got that off because they were size 13 and I did not need the whole school to know what size my jeans were. I don't think many people noticed though.

And once in 8th grade I got my period really bad and I got blood all over my pants (thank God they were black) and I only noticed because there was some blood on the chair. I had to ask my guy teacher if I could go to the bathroom because it was an emergency and I had to wear my cami over my butt the rest of the day. It was the second to last period though.

And once in 6th grade me and my friend were passing notes and we had finished our work and we were just waiting for everyone else to finish. So in the notes we talked about teachers we hated and how we didn't like the class we were in and one of the teachers I said I didn't like was a co-teacher in that class and when she came around to pick up out worksheets she picked up the paper we were writing on and me and my friend saw her reading it and then the teachers called us into the hallway and talked about how she was personally offended and how she was going to notify the other teachers and how she was going to write us up. I was really embarrassed and so was my friend because we were writing in different colors and we had to say who wrote what. Nothing ever happened, we never got in trouble but we did get our seats moved away from each other.

Any other mothers suffering?

Metal Nett

My only "baby" graduated from Infant school today, I could just about cry every time I pass his little school bag hanging on the door knob where it's hung for the past three years, I can hardly believe my little boy is seven and going to juniors in September, he seems so young still, and yet he's off to play with the big kids soon.

Anyone else doing this this week or next week?

Wade in to my misery with me, lol, how on Earth did they get so big? I still remember holding his tiny self on my shoulder like it was yesterday, now he's 4ft 8 and wearing an age 9-10. All his little friends signed his shirt, it's hanging in his room, I could bust out crying every time I think about it.

:(

Answer
Have you thought about going to your school counselor and the other schools in your area? A lot of the kids at my school, (I am a school teacher) get jobs by talking to the counselor. Our counselors get lots of calls for things like babysitting and tutoring. You can also go door to door and talk personally giving the moms a little "resume" about you and maybe even some numbers of some who you have done some babysiting for. You could start off as a mother's helper so that you can play with the children when their mom is home so that she can see that you can do a good job. If you have friends that already babysit, ask if they would introduce you to some of the people that they babysit for and maybe you could babysit with your friend so that the parents could get to know you and the kids can warm up to you. When the kids are happy, the parents will call you back! You can make a babysitting bag with all types of games, make-up, books etc and show the moms what tupes of things that you would like to do with their kids other than watching TV or playing video games. It may take a while to get established as a "professional babysitter". I actually loved the younger babysitters because they still liked or at least didn't mind playing with my children and they were not so prone to be sitting on the phone with a boyfriend the entire time. I Think you are definately old enough, you just have to prove yourself as being responsible. Good luck!

That's what I have. It has lasted me the last two years with my laptop and all my school supplies with ZERO signs of wear, it looks brand new. And the straps are very padded, which I have appreciated as lugging my textbooks and my dell is hard on the back.

Do Kids Really Carry Their Backpacks?

th3lawmak3

In high school do kids really walk around and bring to class their backpacks?

Answer
It depends on the school. I have worked in schools where everyone carries their backpacks because the school is too large to go to your locker, school where only a few kids carried their backpacks, and even some schools that had rules against carry backpacks and backs. Many girls carry a larger purse style bag for their books, and many boys use the drawstring smaller bags that are similar to back packs instead of larger back packs.

What's a good high school job?

Q. I've heard that fast food is good for building people skills, but I was also considering a job at a supermarket.

I would like some opinions, suggestions and reasons.

Thank you!

Answer
How to Find a Job (during High School)

You're in high school and want some extra spending cash for weekends at the mall and that new prom date. What do you do? You get an after-school job. Usually high school jobs are only "after school" or "summer jobs." Employers know that you must go to school every day until at least 4 o'clock. They also know your exact level of education and prospective skills. Consequently, your job options are rather limited.

Typical high school jobs include:

Restaurant/fast food work (host, wait staff, bus boy/girl)
Cashier work (grocery, convenient stores)
Bag boy/girl (grocery stores)
Movie theater staff
Ushers in theaters
Retails stores â sales clerks (clothing stores)
Babysitting
Lawn mower
Camp Counselors (summer)
Some of these jobs seem easier than others. Some are easier to "get" and even others more desirable. Most of your work in high school will give you minimum wage, although some places might give you more. Minimum wage as of January 1, 2004 ranges from state to state, with $8.50 the highest, $2.65 the lowest, and $5.15 the most common. It may or may not seem like a lot to you now, but if you add up the 15-20 hours you will be spending working after school or on the weekends, it will be sufficient cash for you to spend as you like. Now you won't have to hassle your parents if you want to go out to the mall or see another movie with your friends.

Once you decide that you want to find a job in high school, you should follow the following steps:

Be at least 16 years of age
Convince your parents that you will maintain your grades while you work
Go around to several stores you like and ask if they are hiring. If so, they will give you an application. Fill out all applications and return them. Make sure you write legibly (type, if possible).
Every time you go to the store/restaurant, dress appropriately. No jeans.
Request an interview in person or over the phone. Ask politely, of course.
In an interview, be honest. They all know you are high school students and will have very little job experience. They just want to know you will be punctual and loyal.
If you want to work "on your own," then follow these steps. The jobs in this category consist of Babysitting, Lawn Mowing, etc.:

Make a printed flier with your name, address, email, phone number
Visit the appropriate local areas
Ask if you can post a flier
Post your flier in schools, parents' workplaces, list serves, and church/synagogue newsletters, local beach clubs
With these jobs, you will need to make personal contact and build a client base. While it may be difficult at first, you can make substantially more money than working as a checkout clerk at a restaurant or store.

When applying for jobs, here are some final tips and reminders:

Dress appropriately
Speak correctly and politely (little slang, no profanity)
Print your applications legibly
Ask friends/teachers if they can be your references
Be honest about your experience, availability, and age
Call to follow-up on your application
While these jobs may seem silly at times, it is where you must begin in the working world. Not everybody finds a job in high school. So, when you are ready for that college job, you will be a step ahead of many people who chose not to work in high school. Now, you have a resume to create that includes work/employment experience. And remember, no matter how frustrating and demeaning, these early jobs are the best and most formative jobs you can have. They will build your elementary job skills and will be invaluable in the future.

Looking for a school bag?

Emily

I need a bag for school and I can't find any I like in the shops by me, so I was hoping you guys could help me out :D

I'm not really fussy about the colour, but I would really like a white one, and it has to be a handbag/ shoulder bag and can't be too small because I need to fit some books in it! I hate having really small handles too. I'm not too bothered about the style as long as it looks nice :)
Also would be good if it wasn't too expensive! & I live in the UK so Uk sites would be good also! Sorry If I'm being too fussy! :P Best answer for my favourite bag =D thank you!

Answer

Everyone at our school has Primark bags!
They are quite cheap, look very nice, come in lots of different styles, and are big enough to hold lots of books!
They look like New Look bags but they are a lot cheaper.

Top Shop can be expensive, but I think they have a Sale on right now.

Not many people know about this shop, but you should check our your nearest store, because they sell lovely bags, and they're not too expensive especially if you go to an Outlet store!

This shop is called Octopus, I don't know where your nearest shop is, but if you can get to one, they sell really cool and quirky hand bags, purses, accesories, etc.
I love their bags, because no one else has one. :)

I love their White Panda handbags!!

what punishment for a 13 year old for stealing at school?

babyfour

My son is suspended for 3 days as he was caught stealing with his friend. They both stole from another friend bag which was $110..His friend said to go halves with my son.
The school didnt call me and my son messaged me and his phone went dead. School finished at 3pm then he didnt come home and i started worrying and stressing and went looking at the shopping centres looking for him, then he calls me at 7.30pm and says he was caught stealing and scared to come home. I was polite to him and told him that was wrong etc.. and he was a a friends house and told me to pick him up at the station but didnt want to tell me where his friend lives. I talked to him about a hour in the car.
My son says its cause we dont give him enough money and he wants more money and wants $50 a week. My son gets $10 a week but if he doesnt do chorus which he doesnt he only gets $5 a week.
He keeps blaming his dad that its all his fault and dad is crazy and will shout and scream and its all his fault. My son has blamed all this on my husband and i said to him to go to bed and we will talk in the morning.
how much does your 13 year old get a week and what punishment would you give your son for suspension and stealing? This is his 2nd suspension for the year. 1st time stealing that i am aware off.

Answer
I would go to the school first and talk directly with his year co-ordinator.
The problem has to be solved as well as punished.
Punishment should be the last thing considered.

Sort out the situations that your son is getting himself in first and then work on how he is going to change his behaviour.

Punishment should not be used to make you feel good but more to make sure he knows how to fix the problem and not reoffend.
The suspension might be punishment enough.

13 year old refuses to do school project.?

jerry w

Have given help and even said I will do whatever needs to be done but he just refuses to do work. addicted to video games. very smart and able to do work. As a punishment i have taken away video games but the project is still left to do what does a parent do stay up all nite and do the work? or let him get zero.

Answer
Remove more privleges until he caves. Tell him either he does the work or you will SELL the game and he will not be getting another one. Ground him. If he is still spending time with friends away from home, he is still playing his games. Talk to counselor at school about how to make this HIS problem instead of yours. When you hit on that answer, he will do the work.
We removed the games, the TV, the telephone and the fashionable clothing of my stepson. When we made him get a crew cut, he caved. For each child, it's a different thing. When my sister went through this, it was getting totally grounded, which means Mom drops you off at school, usually in a robe and curlers, and WALKS you to your first class. She brings you a bag lunch and stays to eat with you. She volunteers as a moniter at study hall and drives you home after school. You do your homework, because the only other thing to do is housework, and you know you will be doing the nastiest job Mom can find. If you do not cooperate with the program, Mom will prepare all the meals you hate, such as liver and onions with canned spinach. Lumpy oatmeal for breakfast. Sardine sandwiches with cream cheese on raisin bread for lunch. Since you don't get to go out and your allowance is gone, you have to eat it or go hungry. You do not have phone privleges. You are not allowed to have guests or to see your friends, except in class at school. All your teachers are on board and will make a phone call if you try to skip out. When the police find you, you will spend the night in jail. Then Mom will pick you up, again in robe and curlers, and take you to school. Your life will be an embarrassing hell until you cave and do your work. Weekends are worse. Best wishes. Oh, incidentally, my sister just completed her PhD. She uses the same drill on my nephew. Her comment? It worked for Mom.

Is this bag good for school?

Q. I am a girl and I will be a 9th grader for the 2011-2012 school year and I am planning on using this hollister bag instead of a backpack. how much stuff would fit in this? Would it be better to wear this bag on one shoulder across your body like a messenger bag or just on my shoulder like a purse?

Answer
Stick with the backpack. I carried a tote for my freshman and sophomore years and it was awful. You always wind up with one sore arm and ususally wind up having to carry books or binders anyway. Get a backpack, they work so much better.! have fun in high school!

First day of school outfit ideas?

Liz

I start school on Wednesday, and I'm torn between two outfits. One is a pair of shiny black leggings (kind of like fake leather) and a yellow and grey striped tank top (it sounds lame, but it's really cute) and either flip flops or flats. The other one is the same shirt and shoes, but with yoga pants. Which outfit should I wear? Which shoes should I go for? Also, I have a normal backpack and a tote bag, so which should I use? Thanks!
Skinny yoga pants, not regular yoga pants. They look exactly like leggingns. And I barely own and dresses or skirts, so that's out.

Answer
It's soo much easier with a school uniform it isn't even funny. I had school uniforms for half of my life and the other half without. The first day is only a half-day so don't waste the cutest outfit for a half-day. Since it's still hot, wearing something casual and still a little summery would be okay. In fact, wearing summer stuff (vs. traditional 'back-to-school'-ish clothes that are more fall/autumnal) would be cute and the most comfortable.

I always avoided wearing brand-new stuff in the first week of school because it seemed funny to me to see so many kids with their brand-new, back-to-school clothes and shiny, new backpacks. I always thought it was much cooler to not do that. I would wear a really faded and distressed pair of jeans with a tank and flip-flops when it was still hot. Basically, what I would wear if I was just out & about before school started that year.

I don't know if you're a dress kind of person but I always wore little cotton dresses like this with flip-flops or flats (or Keds) for the first couple weeks of school. It's what everyone wore (southern California)

The bumblebee tank and yoga pants with flip flops (unless school dress code says NO to flip-flops.. some do) sounds cute.. with the tote bag and a cute pair of sunglasses. (would also be cute with a pair of skinny cargo's). Maybe even a dab of suntan oil on your arms so you smell like summer!

Can someone please help me with my stationery?

Q. So this is my bag: http://www.lillywhites.com/nike-classic-turf-backpack-711000

I need two ringbinders, I was thinking these ones: http://www.warehousestationery.co.nz/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/WSL-B2C-Site/en_NZ/-/NZD/ViewOfferDetail-Product?ProductRef=75165@WSL-B2C

Would both of them fit? I think they would. Anyway someone mentioned to me to use folders, what do they mean by folders. I can only buy off the site I showed you so if you find the one I should use link me with that site. THANKS!

Answer
Heyyy!! We're in the same country! Yes! :D Don't find many NZers here hahah
Gosh, I miss back to school sales! This year's gonna be my first at Uni!

But...I love your bag! And I'm sure they would fit in your bag. Otherwise you could just carry one, and put the other in your bag or locker. That's what I did anyway. Ahaha.

It depends who said "folders". Like, I know someone who thinks folders are ringbinders but they're not. What you linked to are ringbinders but folders are the ones with the clear/see-through case thingy which you can put paper into. I wouldn't reccommend them since sometimes the plastic rips and it is a PAIN to organise your work. ....but they could also mean Manilla Folders which are basically little pieces of cardboard with this metal thing attached.

I'll link you to them! :)

Manilla Folders (hate them!!):
http://www.warehousestationery.co.nz/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/WSL-B2C-Site/en_NZ/-/NZD/ViewOfferDetail-Product?ProductRef=410012@WSL-B2C

Folders with the clear leaves:

Ringbinders are the best! You can always decorate the and duracel them if you don't like their design :) That's what I did!

Do you think this is a good deal?

Suzy

Toshiba C665 15.6" Notebook + Microsoft Office Home and Student (Product Key Card 2010) + Norton Internet Security 2012 + Bag + Mouse. All this for $NZ 999 (New Zealand Dollars.) Do you think that's a good deal or can I get better? i.e during the boxing day sale can I get a better deal?

Also does this notebook have a DVD/CD drive, for example can I play PC Games on it?

Answer
my wife got an acer core i5 with 6gb memory with same office for 600 CDN at best buy during the going back to school specials.

I wouldnt think the specials would be that far off. i would keep shopping. check the exchange rate if you want to know how much it would have been in NZ.

most laptops are not geared for playing games, gaming machines can run ALOT of money.
that being said, its likely the machine would run most games on lower quality settings.
you can always double check the laptop before buying it.. on the demo laptop run system requirements lab
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/intro.aspx

it will tell you what games you can/cant play what should be upgraded and what the minimum requirements are.

Penn foster high school review?

kwhite

Preferably people who've attended please.

Why does it have such bad reviews? I mean there's some good reviews but there's soo many bad ones, And people Say colleges don't recognize penn foster diploma... Why?

I'm thinking about finishing my high school diploma there... I only have senior year left.

I've also contacted local community college that I'd like to attend and they all said they accept penn foster diplomas.

Is it hard, easy, intermediate?

Should I do just high school diploma, or high school diploma with healthcare concentration? (I want to further my education after high school and be in healthcare)

Thanks!

Answer
None of the online schools get good reviews. They are more interested in profit than education.

Your community college accepts their diploma becwise they admit anyone from the community, diploma or no.

You can bag your senior year altogether and attend community college now. That's what a lot of homeschool kids do.

Can I use this bag as my school bag?

heartt.

http://www.zappos.com/product/7517190/color/40369

I really like it, but I'm not sure if it's big enough for my school supplies. I'm very petite; 4'10 and a half and 92 pounds. I usually only put 2 to 4 composition notebooks, a pencil case, and my wallet in my bag. I don't put my binder in my bag; I carry it around.

Do you think I can use it as my school bag?

Answer
That's definitely a cute bag, but if one of the reviews on Zappos said this isn't a good work bag then it probably wouldn't be all that functional for a school bag either. You don't say what grade you are in (junior high, hs, college), but more than likely you'll need to carry a few text books. The site lists the measurements as 10.5 x 13.5." That maybe enough for notebooks, wallet, cosmetic bag and such... but probably not enough room for everything else you'll need in the course of the day.

One of the great things about Zappos is the amazing 365 day return policy. If you buy the bag and decide you don't like it or it isn't that functional for you, save the packaging and mail it back for a full refund (see Zappos' website for info). If it rips or starts to pill like one of the reviews state, you can always call the company and see if they will honor a faulty product return. In any case, happy shopping!

How can I be prepared for school?

Claymore #

I have some trouble getting organized, and I need some help
-I need tips on organizing my bag
-I need tips on taking notes, since it always ends up being a block with unreadable words
-I need help with getting up early
Thank you all!! It is very appreciated ;)

Answer
For your bag:
To and from school, I carry a 1 inch binder with ALL my subjects in it. This way I KNOW I have everything I need. Each subject is divided with a Divider that HAS POCKETS (very useful for handouts when you don't have time to hole punch). To keep my binder from getting full, at home I keep a 1 inch binder for EACH subject, and at the end of a unit, or when my binder is getting too full I take papers from the to and from school binder and put it in the corresponding binder at home. Keep extra loose leaf at the front pocket of your to and from binder. If you don't think 1 inch is big enough, go for 1 and a half, but once you get to 2 inches, your bag isn't really light anymore, and you want to minimize the amount of stuff you carry home.
Some other useful stuff for your bag: pencil case! You don't want everything randomly lying in your bag so you have to dig for a pencil. Posits! Great for if you want to flag something, say you didn't understand something your teacher taught and you want to ask her a question about it later, or look it up online when you get home. A hole punch! High school is all about handouts. Personally, I also keep a lip balm, a snack, and a pocket do it yourself hangman or sudoku for extreme boredom.

For taking notes:
Try to subdivide your notes. For example, if your teacher is talking about how the Mongols Invaded China, write Mongols Invade China. Underneath that, indent a little bit and write details, like this:
Mongols Invade China
____ -detail
____-detail
____-detail
_______ -you can subdivide further

When you're finished taking notes, highlight or underline the most important stuff, this helps a lot for classes where you take a lot of notes, because as you're taking notes you can't always tell what's the most important.
Using different color pens also helps, for example you can make the headings all blue, and then the details black, or a different color for each section.
Use abbreviations that you understand.
Diagrams often help, for example the structure of social class, or a time line, or a cycle of events. This way it's visual and easier to remember for a test.
If you still feel that your notes look like a block of text, try skipping lines in between certain things

For waking up:
I know this probably sounds like your mother, but go to bed at a reasonable time! Do your homework when you get home, and if you can't do it right away, allow your self a small break, like half an hour, and then start it! Take breaks so your brain remains functional. If you know you often get side tradked on the internet, do all your hw that requires the intnet first, then shut off your computer or internet for the rest of the time If you have too much Hw and it's already late, do some in the morning, your brain is thinking better then. Set your self an alarm, and if you know you'll keep pressing snooze, set a a second alarm on your phone, for the latest time that you can wake up with out being late, but put your phone away from your bed, so unless you get up it will keep beeping. Also, in the morning, you can drink tea. It has caffeine in it, but it's better for you than coffee. And it tastes great! It really helps me to stay focused in the morning, and for my first couple of classes I bring an insulated beverage bottle with tea to school.

Cranes. There's a superstition in Korea (and shared in China as well) that if you make a thousand paper cranes, a wish will be granted - usually something along the lines of 'I wish that guy would ask me out'. You could sell bags of pre-made cranes.

Pumpkin.

Okay I'm from the UK and I'm going into Year 10 in like 3 weeks but I guess more people will understand what I mean by that if I say I'm gonna be a freshman which if I was American, I guess I would be:) (I'm 14). I have friends in the majority of my classes, but I'm worried in case I'm alone in some classes? I'm worried about immature boys and mean girls making fun out of me:/ and I'm worried about getting lost too. Any tips to help me with starting high school? Thanks!!!

What are some things to do after school with 5 and 7 year old girls?

rhainnedro

I am looking for things to do in the afternoons with my kids to keep them occupied and give us family time. Now that winter is setting in and it's too cold to play outside, I need some indoor ideas that are cheap and easy to accomplish. I also have a 15 month old son to keep busy. He's not walking yet so that will make a difference in what I can do. All ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Answer
-Arts and Crafts: coloring, cutting, glueing, painting, sponging, model clay etc. I've painted picture frames, mirrors, boxes etc with my kids
-Puppets/Puppet show: decorate paper bags or cut out paper and glue to popsicle sticks. Get a big box, cut a square hole and put on a show.
-Paper/Pillow Dolls: Print out paper dolls and glue googly eyes, string for hair and paper/fabric out for clothes. Or get small pillows and decorate it to be a doll.
-Iron on T-shirts: They can draw pictures on special paper and you can then iron it onto t-shirts. Or get designer pens to just draw onto the t-shirt.
-Collages & Scrap Books: get out pictures of them (or make copies) and let them cut them out and paste them onto paper.
-Beading: necklaces, braclets
-Lanyard
-Baking/cooking cookies, brownies, chocolate lolipops, ricecrispy treats, maybe help you with dinner
-board games
-puzzles. My boys who are around the age of your girls LOVE 3D puzzles
-Shaving Cream Writing: put some shaving cream on a cookie cutter and practice writing letters, numbers, drawing, tic-tac-toe

Best Wishes =]

Graphic designers please help me D:?

Sorry for my bad english, I just want to know which subjects do u take for being graphic designers.
Because i like almost every subject except makin models whit real materials. In Usa do u have to make models? D:?
and how is study graphic design in there? do u need to expend a lot of money in materials?
Are community college bad?

Where I live now its awful I only want to work on comics, games or movies, but in Chile there ain't many jobs about i want :(

Answer
Good courses are Marketing, Figure Drawing, Communications, Creative Writing, Illustration, 3D design, sculpture and many more drawing classes. As a Graphic Designer you need to be able to come up with things that do not exist already but can serve a practical purpose. This one thing I struggled to do when I was studying graphic design. I did not have enough creativity to compete with the others.

For Comics, you need strong drawing skills.

For games, you need to go to a school that specializes in Game Design, because in my Graphuc Design program we mostly did stationary, posters, newsletters, brochures, and a little bit of Web Design. Definetly no training to for Game Design or Movies.

For movies, go to school that specializes in animation.

If you were to Design shopping bags, brochures, envelopes, or boxes, yes youle would need to make atleast a minature model from some materials to explain to your professor how it works or how practical it is to use.

Graphic Design could be quite expensive. Buying Computers, buying new program updates every year, It's expensive to repair Macs, learn to repair yourself. Printing samples can be spensive.

All colleges are not created equal.

Graphic Designers also have to work under strict deadlines and be expected to produce a perfect product they may have to be modified multiple times before being accepted. Graphic Design is for those who are extremely creative and have tough skin. Your work will be subject to criticism no matter how great you think it is.

Middle School????????

Q. ok soooo this is gonna sound a little stupid, but this year im going to a public middle school and my old school didnt give class periods and we couldnt decorate our lockers or anything, so do u decorate ur lockers? and, is there any else i should kno? thnx!

Answer
Yes, there are usually 7-8 periods a day for around 45 minutes to an hour each.

Most schools will let you decorate your locker.

Some things I advise that you have in there are -
A small whiteboard and dry erase marker. Very invaluable in case you need to write down test days, etc.
Small mirror.
Little magnetic basket that clips to the inside, so you can have all your pens and stuff in easy reach.
Sturdy backpack, because there can sometimes be a ton of homework and it weighs down your shoulders.
A shelf to put on the bottom to separate your books - before lunch and after lunch. Trust me, if you don't do this they'll all get mixed up and it'll take you FOREVER to get everything out.

Also, you have around 3-5 minutes to get to each class. This may seem like very little, but I assume your school has about a week where it lets the new kids get used to it. Getting the hang of it is really easy.

You usually have a homeroom in the beginning of the day with a bunch of other kids and a specified teacher. In my junior high, these were also the kids I had to sit by at lunch unless it was a special day and we could sit by whoever we wanted.

And one more thing - there's going to be a lot of drama. I mean, a ton. Don't spread rumors, because they hurt, and really, would you want someone spreading a rumor about you? If there's a rumor about you, don't automatically go up to him/her and tell her off. This just brings you down to their level of immaturity. Just brush it off because you know it's not true, and if anybody asks you about it, don't bash the person that started it, just say, "That's not true." or something. I know that's a lot harder than it sounds, but if you can stay true to yourself that's the best.

One more thing - try to get involved in clubs and sports you like! You make a lot of new friends and learn new stuff that way. Plus, it's really fun! :D

HELP SCHOOL?! NEW KID?!! MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!???!!!!!?

Selly

alright can some1 give me tips on starting a new school? who to sit by on the bus im transferring from private 2 public.... wardrobe...dresscode (polo wit fingertip length bottoms) links are good :) shoes? bag? who 2 sit by @ lunch? im going in2 6th grade... and just in general everything u know :) tips thanks xoxox

Answer
Be as organized as possible. Also, sit by other 6th graders who are IN YOUR CLASSES. Public school is very different than private school. If you sit by a girl on the bus, you will be somewhat shielded from the dirty language and humor. Be in dresscode! At my school, they embaress girls all the time by measuring their skirts with a ruler in the hallway, with dozens of people walking by. For backpacks and shoes, go with stylish, but sturdy. Clothes: Name-brand, yet don't draw attention to yourself. With supplies, have plenty of pencils. It is important to know your way around. Sucking up to the teachers is okay when nescessary, but making friends with them is always okay. Each teacher is different.

P.S. Read the rulebook from front to back, and always be prepared!!

James

Hi I'm a 14 year old boy and wondering if this manbag would look good for school and also what position should i place the bag to the side or to my back left or right? 10 points good detailed answer. http://www.jdsports.co.uk/product/adidas-originals-adicolor-airline-bag/044535/

Answer
Yeah it looks great for school. Probably has the right shape etc for all your books and equipement plus it's quite "in" atm for boys your age. I am 14 and I go to a mixed school and a lot of boys my age have that kind of bag especially from Superdry, Adidas etc. So, yeah go for it. Looks great and you should probably have going over your shoulder and head and either have it on your side or the back, if you get what I mean.
Hope this helps :)

Cute backpacks or messengers bags for college girls?

ecstasy

I need help finding a good bag for school. I want something cute but not too overly cute. Something simple would be fine too. I don't like tote bags because...they really won't hold any of my books or other things. I looked everywhere for bags and backpacks but I can't find anything! I'll buy anything under 100.

Any suggestions? :)

Answer
Jansport has soooo many kinds of backpacks! whether it be for a girly 14 year old, or a hiker. they have something for everyone. Also their backpacks last pretty long! my sister had a jansport for 2 years of high school she carried it around entirely full, in rain, 102 degree sunshine. and it was still in good condition when she changed it!
Jansport also carries Laptop bags, and luggage!

another Great brand is Dickie's or Volcom. I've never owned one, but they have nice designs!

However, your best bet would be jansport :D

what should i carry in my school bag? (freeman girls)?

Smokeless

Answer
BASICS
- No. 2 pencils
- Mechanical pencils
- Colored pencils
- Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top to collect shavings)
- A large pink eraser
- Ballpoint pens (Get a few red ink ones too, because some teachers have students do peer editing.)
- Highlighters
- Spiral-bound or composition notebooks
- Loose-leaf notebook paper (Teachers can be picky about paper. Some middle schools ask that students use the college-ruled variety.)
- A ruler with English and metric measurements

ORGANIZATIONAL HELPERS
- Several three-ring binders (Some teachers require that a binder be used exclusively for their class.)
- A three-hole punch (a regular one or one that fits in a three-ring binder)
- A pencil case that fits in a binder
- Binder dividers (The kinds with pockets are good for loose papers.)
- Pocket folders
- Folders that fit in binders
- A small notebook to record assignments
- A calendar for scheduling assignments
- A sturdy, supportive backpack (Some schools do not permit rolling backpacks because of space considerations, so check with your school before considering this option.)
- Two combination locks (If the school lockers do not have built-in locks, you might need one for the hallway and one for the gym.)
- Flash Drive to save any important documents

STUDY AIDS
- Index cards, ruled and unruled (These are great for making flash cards.)
- Highlighters
- A calculator (Check with the math teacher first before investing in an expensive one. Graphing calculators, for example, are required in many high school math classes. Teachers advise parents not to buy a calculator with more functions than students will use.)

EXTRA
- tampons
- pads
- lotion
- makeup bag
- cell phone
- iPod
- sunglasses
- brush
- bottle of water
- textbooks

What are some really nice purse/bags?

Join the D

I don't use a backpack for school so I need a big enough purse for my crap. But I have no clue what are some good styles.

Answer
I'm starting middle school in September and I have 3 bags for school : 2 Coach tote bags and a Puma messenger bag. I know most people can't really afford Coach but don't get knock offs.

I would recommend Puma , Coach , Gucci , Nike , Adidas , Chanel , American Eagle , Abercrombie , Hollister , Forever21 , Vera Wang , Juicy Couture and BCBG.

Or if you don't have much , Claire's , Wal-Mart , Target , H&M are all cheap

Teenage depression? Please help..?

SP123

Hello,I am a sixteen year old Syrian teenager. Before I go into the "what's wrong with me/help me part of this,I'd like to give you a little backstory of my life.

I was born in Syria to a Syrian Mother and Iraqi Father. When I was three years old,I moved to Dubai. After living there for over a year,my father decided to take us to California. We ended up staying there for seven years, and, once I turned 10 we moved back to Syria to be closer to family. Syria was great,Damascus was great. Around March 2011 the civil war brok out, however my family had decided to stay in the country regardless for the problems weren't as bad in the capital. We carried on living there for over a year and a half into the civil war. My father began fearing the safety of his family,so,like any sane parent would do,carried off and left to the States. But this time we went to Ohio instead.

Ohio was bland and we only stayed there for one year (last year) because my parents didn't enjoy it much, more notably my father fell into a major depression over what was going on in Syria as well as being so far away from home. Summer rolled along and we packed our bags.. Where too? Syria.

It was nice being able to see my family once again in Syria, but after three months one does get bored. Schools had begun in the U.S. and my father was once again lost on the infamous topic of where we were going to go next. So,my father landed on coming to Beirut,Lebanon to check out the situation for living as well as schools my siblings and I could be enrolled in.

I've been in Lebanon for a week now with my sister and father. My mother and younger sister are in Syria, should be coming soon though. And he still is confused as to where we are moving too. I personally really wanted to go back to California for my Education. I have stellar grades and determined to go to a prestigious higher learning institute. I myself have also fallen into a state of depression as to what my life has become of constantly moving and not knowing what's going to happen with my life. Are colleges going to look at me with disapproval when examining my rather bizarre lifestyle? I want to do what's best for my family and don't want them sacrificing their lives just for me. Schools have begun and I still don't know what's going to happen. Will my family move to Beirut? They are even in talks of just going back to Syria. My family really cares about me and tell me that they are sorry of the suffering but everyone suffers sometime in his life..
I am a U.S. citizen and an Iraqi citizen. Surprisingly,I do not have Syrian citizenship due to the fact that my father is not Syria, pretty odd, right?

Answer
You are something of a TCK - Third Culture Kid. Look them up, they have a FB page among other things. There are others out there lost in the world. It's OK, some of us build on what's been gained with unique experiences everywhere.

Basically ever since I came back from the Emirates (went all over Dubai, Abu Dhabi), I've felt sick, depressed, can't eat, can't do anything all I wana do is go live there.

I can't explain how it is but it really does open up your eyes to another world and Im sat here right now reading blog after blog of expat (british) amazing experiences there.

I miss it. to put it short.

You come back to UK, you dont see bugattis and modified X6s parked outside the mall anymore. You dont see pink hummers, and ferraris and lambos parked outside many homes

You cant beep the horn outside a shop and the indian come running outside to ask you what you need

Nobody opens closes car door behind you and takes your things inside-- you go food shopping and kill your fingers just to get it inside the house- Ive resorted to actually taking them granny bags wit me to Morissons.

You dont get special treatment- over there because I wear abaya they think Im emaraty (my Bf is local and in national dress too because imm from near this region in the gulf originally but just lived in uK for studies)

Nobody asks you how many items you have when you go into shop- you try them on and leave the scruffed pile for the filipino to clear up

the foood is 7 Star here absolutely amazing hygenic and fast

10 lane motorways

Being greeted with Maam and Sir wherever you go

Government give uae nationals a villa when they get married or money to build one- so no mortgage for life etc

Safeeeetly-- we left our car (porshe cayeene) running outside the hotel forget t on- hotel staff park it and give us key in morning

Its really easy to skive work- sick note, send ur indian to sign for you- but they changed that now and they have finger print ahahah o sign in and out as many people abused the system

All cars are white n tinted (my favourite) and all 4 x 4 --no smaller than 4.5 litre (cheap petrol) no expensive insurance , stupid rules about seatbelt etc basically a policeman stopped us...then checked documents...my bf hadnt done his insurance for 2 years.....and wasnt wearing seatbelt...he laughed with the policeman saying "aww dont fine me on both-!! " then the police man said "ok choose one insurance or seatbelt"- he chose insurance because even though its more expensive (100 pound fine) it doesnt hav points of licence like with seatbelt---compared to in Uk it would be other way--? what does this say about this place??

I dont blame the British expats for going there- this countrys expat population is now 75% + and local population so little

Should I just marry him after we finish studies and live with him
Hes a real man, He loves me, Pays for everything and never lets me spend a penny (part of the culture too as he says if offendshis manhood when I try to pay before you call me a gold digger!!!)

O an being a housewife just means havin a maid, cook and really good social life. (chaffeur too if you dont wana drive) so NO. Women there are NOT oppressed.

No tax- starting salary 10 K a month for british degree + villa + pool +car and first flight tickets home twice a year included--! and if you have kids the pay half their school fees

No tax on anything- In uk you cant escae Tax even when you're dead- inheritance tax.!! and the people work for the government to pay them wages not the other way-!!the government doesnt care about its people sadly

you need to share your thoughts coz im NOT dreaming. Ive seen this world. And it IS the reason every1 is obsessed with this country right now.

btw- ive been twice this year and 3 times last

Answer
Dear,

I don't blame you for being just 21 years old and dreaming about One Thousand and One Night. It's a big difference being on vacation or working and living in the UAE. But let me start at the beginning.

1) I don't know about Dubai, but I've neither seen any pink Hummers in Abu Dhabi. 3 Bugattis belong to a rent a car company and there are only a very few Masaratis and Lambos.

2) Staying inside the car, beeping the horn an wait for an Indian come running, works in small convinient stores only and is a sign of disrespect and lazyness.

3) When living here, nobody beside your maid or husband will open or close your house door.

4) agreed

5) This is the behavior of a spoild child and in Boutiques you are mostly allowed 4 pieces max.

6) depends on where you dine

7) not in Abu Dhabi

8) agreed and it's annoing after a while

9) keep on dreaming. Not such things like marriage funds anymore.
Getting a villa? Get your name on the list and wait until first Govt. employees got one, then families with children (the more the better).

10) agreed

11) where did you get that from?

12) not true. Not all cars are white SUV's. (our cars are black, grey and blue). Tinted windows are allowed up to a certain extend only unless a woman obtained extra permission. Unvalid registration, no insurance and no seat belt - what does this tell you about this place? It tells you that many Emiratis still have to learn a lot. That's it.

13) agreed

14) you Have to get married to live with him.

15) oh Girl. In case you are married to an Emirati, have a maid, cook and driver, you will be bored to death as long as you don't have any children. Please be aware that your social life will be "ladies only". Having a maid for cleaning and help cooking - fine. But what do you need a cook for? Driver? Can't you cook and drive? You are right we are not oppressed, we can drive.

16) you are dreaming again. GBP 10K (assume you are not speaking about AED:))? Only when a western degree and YEARS OF EXPERIENCE! For sure NOT for people who just finished their studies. Same for villa, etc. Tickets back home? Not for an Emirati. Your kids will be Emiratis and public schools are for free.

Please don't take my inputs as an offense, you asked for sharing thoughts.
Many foreign girl wake up when realising that their Arab husband isn't exactly the same anymore he used to be aboard. In case your future husband is from a conservative Abu Dhabi family - you better think twice about your great social life. This doesn't have to be a problem, but it can. What do you think how many divorced foreign women live in Abu Dhabi?

Anyway, I wish you all the best. Some of your dreams may become true, but that may take time, patience, hard work and a good working marriage. Take care.
