I was thinking of getting him a briefcase/computer bag for work because he doesn't have one. I want to get him a nice brand/looking one that has a shoulder strap but I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money. Can someone give me suggestions? I don't really know what brand of bags is a good one.

Answer
If you don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money, it would probably be better to buy him a nice pen, or a couple of ties (lawyers wear a lot of suits).

A lawyer's work bag / briefcase needs to look elegant and professional, and a good one will cost you at least $100. You can get a good one for around $100, but a really "impressive" one will cost $300+; lawyers in firms sometimes spend up to $1000 on a good work bag. (On the other hand, lawyers working for the government, or for non-profits, often use canvas messenger bags similar to what students use, because they tend to make less money and don't want to waste it or look like a showoff. But lawyers working for law firms need expensive leather bags, especially if they will be taking the bags to court.) In my case I use a soft-sided leather briefcase (with strap) from Gucci, which I bought at a really good sale.

These days most young lawyers are wearing leather messenger-style bags with shoulder straps like you described, or soft-sided leather briefcases with a strap, rather than hard briefcases. (Older lawyers tend to like "real" hard briefcases with no strap.) But leather is key. Black leather is best, as it will match all different colors of suits/clothes, but brown leather is also appropriate if you know it will fit your boyfriend's wardrobe.

Here are some examples of what to look for. I'm linking to Amazon.com because they sell lots of different brands (via their partner companies) and offer some really good discounts, but you don't have to buy one of these. If you prefer to shop elsewhere or go to a store in the mall, just look for something in this style. (But if you go to a store in the mall, it will cost more, as they don't usually have discounts on these kinds of bags.)

Leather messenger bag, Kenneth Cole, $85:

Soft-sided briefcase, Tandi, $280

This soft-sided briefcase (with shoulder strap) from Kenneth Cole is a good deal at $110, because Amazon is selling it for over 50% off retail price. And of course, Kenneth Cole is a good brand.

Leather messenger bag, Moderm, $230:

If you want a cheaper one than what I listed above, this Samsonite hard-sided briefcase that also has a strap is a good deal at just $79, because Amazon is selling it at 70% off the retail price of $280. I think that $280 price is probably inflated. But it's a good deal at $79, and Samsonite is a very good brand. While I personally don't like the style of this one as much as the others above, it is still high quality enough for a lawyer.

Now, if you really wanted a bag with "wow" factor, you could go for this one from Louis Vuitton--but that will require a ridiculous amount of money, more than you should spend right now.

Maybe as a 10 year anniversary gift or something. :) For now, the bags I listed above are much more affordable and are all very good, professional bags/briefcases suitable for a lawyer.

Do NOT go to the "replica handbags" site recommended by the poster above. If you buy your boyfriend a replica bag (i.e. fake), his colleagues will eventually notice that it's fake, and some of them will think bad things.

What does it cost to get a private pilot's license?

I know there's ground school and I heard around 70 hours of flying. Can you tell me how much all this would cost for a small airplane like a Cessna 150?

Answer
The cost depends HEAVILY on the time you actually take to finish and the hourly costs for the aircraft and instructor. A Cessna 152 can rent from $59/hr at a flying club to over $70/hr at a pricey flight school.

Get C152 rental rates near you here- http://www.private2atp.com/ft_finder.php

An example cost break down if your training was completed in the FAA MINIMUM required time (40 hours not 44) with some averaged rental rates:

* Third Class Medical $65
* 40 hours C172 rental @ $62/hr = $2,480
* 30 hours Flight Instruction @ $30/hr = $900
* Misc pilot supplies (see list) $300
* FAA Computerized Written Exam Fee $70
* Examiner fee $250

Private Pilot cost = $4,065

A student that finishes their training closer to the national average of 65 hours flight time will pay approximately

* Third Class Medical $65
* 65 hours C172 rental @ $62/hr = $4,030
* 55 hours Flight Instruction @ $30/hr = $1,650
* Misc pilot supplies $300
* FAA Computerized Written Exam Fee $70
* Examiner fee $250

Private Pilot cost = $6,365

Many schools advertise a price for the PPL, but that only cover the 40 hour student. If they go over that, then it costs more. Some areas of the country or certain airport have very pricey rental rates. Shop around before you commit. Check into any flying clubs in your area as they are often less expensive as they have no staff or overhead to pay for.

Figure costs with your rental rates here- http://www.firstflight.com/features/cost...

Example supplies needed:
Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual $72
"FAR/AIM" book (regulations & operating rules) $19
Pilot logbook $13
Navigation Plotter $11
An "E6B" Flight Computer $13
Sectional Chart $8
PPL Written Test Study Guide $18
PPL Oral Exam Guide $22
PPL Practical Test Standards Book $6
... and a Flight Bag to hold it all!
