Ateneo de Manila or De la Salle University?

Charming M

I got accepted to both these schools. (probably because I only applied for them)
See, DLSU was my very first choice. Totally a green archers girl ever since I decided to go back home for college. I only applied for Ateneo because everyone else was applying for it too.

I wasn't able to apply for UP because I got home late from the States and the application was already closed. And I applied for UST, but on my test date, I was out of country.

ANYWAYS, back to the topic.
So my parents won't let me go to DLSU because they really like Ateneo for some goddamned reason.

Anybody tell me which really is the better school?
Who has a better reputation?
Safety matters?
What type of students they produce?

Uhm, condo-type dorms?

thanks. I'm absolutely confused here. :(
BRAG queen, can you tell me more about la salle?
Personally, I love la salle.
Safety matters and stuff?
@mc² m. La salle. xD
I've been to Ateneo already.

I applied for marketing in dlsu and communications technology in ateneo.

I'm guessing you're from ateneo? xP

Answer
WHICH IS THE BETTER SCHOOL?

1. According to the THS-QS world survey of Universities, Ateneo (AdMU) is the best private school in the Philippines for 2009; whereas De La Salle (DLSU) was the best private school for 2008.

2. For Business, Economics, Computer, Engineering, and Science courses, go to DLSU; for Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, Humanities, Management, Pre-Law, and Communications, go to AdMU.

3. AdMU usually bags championships in debates and philosophy; DLSU gets the championships in mathematics, business, and engineering.

BETTER REPUTATION?

1. AdMU has a better reputation, because as one answerer above said, saying that you are from "the Ateneo" still commands some prestige and awe. Most people view Ateneans as "slightly brainy and rich". Politicians particularly prefer sending their kids to Ateneo; and most American foreigners in the Philippines send their children here.

2. DLSU also has a nice reputation, although this good reputation is focused on Business and Science. If you are taking a Business or Engineering course in DLSU, you'll be seen as intelligent. Most Chinese in the Philippines send their kids to Ateneo; and most Indian, Asian, and European foreigners in the Philippines would choose this school. DLSU is known as the "wealth-maker", for the reason that most of its graduates are/become rich.

3. The stereotypes are NOT true, however

SAFETY?

1. AdMU is safe because it is a gated institution, and it is a lot less crowded than in DLSU. The college buildings are evenly spaced, and there are greens all around. It is also situated high in Quezon City which is kinda far from the unwanted elements of society. Bars and restaurants sprawl right outside the Ateneo campus.

2. DLSU is a lot safer, at least inside the campus. The area around the campus is also fairly safe, except for some minor pickpockets. DLSU students usually bring cars and go to nearby places such as Makati or Mall of Asia for entertainment, rather than the surrounding area.

ORGANIZATIONS AND ATHLETICS?

1. AdMU organizations are professionally constructed and are extensively focused on community outreach and service. Student government is still largely under the control of the Administration and of the Jesuit priests. If the AdMU men's basketball team wins, there is typically a free cut for a day and bonfires.

2. DLSU's student organizations are more communal/friendly than formal, although the annual student election is seen as big business. If the DLSU men's basketball team wins, you get a free cut for a day and free buffet lunch.

TYPE OF STUDENTS PRODUCED?

1. AdMU students are seen as frank, assertive and independent in thought and practice. Most of them speak English as their first language. Many AdMU students go on to become professionals.

2. DLSU students are very communicative and very friendly; as a group they are seen as one of the country's finest when it comes to mathematics and science; . Most of them use Taglish (English with some Tagalog) as their first language. Many DLSU students go on to become rich entrepreneurs.

CONDO-TYPE DORMS?

1. AdMU students have a wide range of choices along Katipunan Avenue (the main avenue right outside AdMU), such as Burgundy Katipunan, or may opt for an in-school dormitory such as Cervini Hall, although there is less privacy.

2. DLSU students have a greater and more elegant range of choices along Taft Avenue, Manila Bay, or Makati. Most stay in EGI Taft, Burgundy Taft, and Torre Lorenzo. DLSU does not have an in-school dormitory - since mot of its students are from Manila.

3. There is free lodging for both AdMU and DLSU varsity students.

OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT?

1. AdMU is up high in Loyola heights in Quezon City, and it is also very far from the usual shopping malls and entertainment strips. But the greens usually suffice for Ateneans.

2. DLSU is near Makati and Fort Bonifacio (shopping and entertainment paradise) and also near Mall of Asia and Manila Bay.

INSIDE ENVIRONMENT?

1. AdMU has closely packed buildings within a huge tract of greens. It is clean and well-maintained. Only a handful of classrooms are air-conditioned, but they do have a new giant computer lab.

2. DLSU has buildings sprawled through one side of Taft Avenue. Facilities (e.g., computers) of DLSU are said to be World-Class and of the highest standard in the Philippines. ALL classrooms except science laboratories are air-conditioned. DLSU also has tons of active exchange student programs with other Asian universities in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

THE UGLY BITS AND CLOTHING!

1. AdMU students are generally straight-to-the-point, direct, and aggressive. They will tell you whatever pops out of their mind without batting an eyelash. They can also look at you from head to foot and tell you directly that you are wearing a tacky outfit. Because of that - a LOT of verbal fights do occur among Ateneans! AdMU students typically dress like the average college student in USA.

2. DLSU students are generally comfortable with conformity and have a sense of "hiya" (shame). It is not usual to report a fellow groupmate to your professor even though he didn't participate in the groupwork - that being said, freeloading could be a slightly more important problem in DLSU. Because of the relaxed dress code, most Lasallians wear beach clothing (short-shorts, shirts, flip-flops).

::: That being said, and given your American upbringing, you'll feel more at-home with the environment of AdMU than DLSU... but for me, I (obviously) like DLSU students and the environment better!
