He has to ride about a mile, the trombone is heavy and he is not a big kid. We tried strapping a milk crate to his Mtn Rack, but it slid off.

Answer
strap it to his packpack, or simple stick it between his back and his backpack

What is a good store/website to get teen school backpacks from?
